Alfred Hitchcock again, this time directing what many critics consider to be his first indisputable masterpiece. This time, the mythology of the innocence of small-town America is the major theme, with Joseph Cotton perfectly cast against type as the charming Uncle Charlie whose slow reveal as a monster hiding in plain sight builds slowly and unbearably right up until the end.
