LeVar Burton Shares His Hopes For America After Midterm Results

Acknowledgement is the beginning of healing.

LeVar Burton shares his pain -- and his hope for America after the midterm elections. I thought it would resonate with us all. Via Twitter.

This morning, I feel like I am taking the first step toward recovering from the impact these past six years have had on me.

Mind, this is simply an initial step on the journey forward and one that I welcome with genuine relief. However true healing will come with time. That and my willingness to continue to believe in and fight for an America which sees and values all of us!

However, I’m not going to lie, the part of me that has faith in America’s seriousness about the precepts upon which it was founded has been significantly damaged. Irreparably…? We’ll see.

BTW-I’m not looking for advice as to how to take care of myself. I appreciate you giving a damn but trust me, I’m in a process.

Here’s the thing, I am just the most recent generation in my family to have my American dream threatened by white supremacist terrorism. It is obvious that the ideologies of hate and violence have deep roots in this culture. History notes that we’ve been here before. #DejaVu

After the Civil War, America embarked on a remarkable initiative where rights, privileges and most importantly, protections under the law were extended to emancipated Black people. This ambitious period in our history is called Reconstruction. Google it!

White supremacists lost their sh*t! They couldn’t handle the idea that Black people were deserving of the social, political and economic equality we were rapidly developing. What followed was a period of what amounted to state sanctioned terrorism against us. Lynch, burn, loot!

Rinse and repeat… for the next 100 years!

I believe it is time for a new period of Reconstruction in America. We need to hold our leaders accountable to Democracy and I am interested in working with those who are similarly committed to justice, fairness and equal protection under the law for all Americans.

Lots of pain, but also hope. Plenty to think about.
