Stephen Miller Threatens To Sue Law Schools If Race Used To Admit
Stephen Miller plans to take the Supreme Court’s attack on affirmative action to the next MAGA level.
Apparently, Miller was so energized by Friday’s Supreme Court decision abolishing affirmative action in college and university admissions that just a few hours later he claimed to have fired off 200 threatening letters to law schools, hoping to use the ruling to make higher education and their professional alumni even whiter and more privileged. Plus, it’s an opportunity to raise some more dough from his MAGA maniac donors and, as a bonus, harm “elite” institutions while he’s at it.
Miller boasted about his new “mission” in a fundraising video:
MILLER: Today we sent a warning letter to the deans of 200 law schools around America, telling them that they must obey the Supreme Court's ruling striking down illegal racial discrimination and affirmative action. If they try to violate circumvent, bypass, subvert or otherwise program around that ruling, we are going to take them to court. We are going to hold them to account.
Of course, what Miller really means is that if a law school demonstrates any effort toward diversity – or it just looks that way - he’ll bludgeon both with a lawsuit he’s willing to take to the Supreme Court.
It’s very clear that Roberts and his right-wing ideologues set up colleges and universities for exactly this kind of maneuver. Vox’s Ian Millhiser explains that while SCOTUS' ruling states, “an applicant’s discussion of how race affected his or her life, be it through discrimination, inspiration, or otherwise” can still be considered in admission decisions, it also “potentially subjects universities to lawsuits they cannot realistically defend against” because how can a school prove that it admitted a minority student “because of the student’s eloquence, and not because of their race?”
That’s the opening Miller is already looking to exploit. Apparently, his hotline for white victims of racial discrimination hasn’t yielded enough White Power opportunities for him to harm diversity efforts and get his charisma-free self in front of the Supreme Court. Yet.
