The Head Of The Party Of Lincoln Just Slapped Lincoln Around
Yeah, he went there. Trump thinks he could have negotiated a better deal to end the Civil War.
It was only a matter of time before the presumptive GOP frontrunner took a crap all over Abraham Lincoln over how he handled the Civil War. After all, Nikki Haley dabbed in revising history, so why shouldn't raging narcissist Donald Trump give it a shot, too?
Before we go on, there were attempts to secure a deal before the Civil War was launched, but slavery was not up for compromise. There were three well-documented significant attempts to avert secession and the Civil War, including the Crittenden Compromise. However, it protected slavery in certain areas. So, Lincoln told a Republican colleague to “entertain no proposition for a compromise in regard to the extension of slavery.”
Maybe that's the compromise that Lumpy is discussing -- compromising slavery. Trump never mentions slavery. He probably doesn't fully understand slavery's part in the war.
And he would have done the same with Ukraine by tossing chunks of it to Russia. There is no compromise with slavery. The brutality that slaves endured should not have been compromised. The word no comes to mind instead.
"The Civil War was so fascinating, so horrible," Trump said. "So many mistakes were made. See, there was something I think could have been negotiated, to be honest with you. I think you could have negotiated that. All the people died, so many people died. You know, that was the disaster."
Trump then described the Civil War as "vicious" and suggested that if "Abraham Lincoln had negotiated it, you probably wouldn't even know who Abraham Lincoln was.
And, of course, the suggestion here is that Trump is a more extraordinary man than Abraham Lincoln was, and he would have negotiated a deal to save the 620,000 lives lost during the Civil War.
Liz Cheney weighed in with a question for members of her party:
Would Trump have negotiated for the Union or the Confederacy? You know the answer.
