Will Nick Saban Save Alabama From Its Tommy Tuberville Problem?
After the Alabama football coach stepped down yesterday, a call came out to "save us from Tommy Tuberville one more time", a move Alabama's Democratic Party seconded.
A cute idea that unfortunately will probably never happen. When Democrat Doug Jones pulled off his stunning upset of Republican Roy Moore in 2017, he did so against a dangerous rightwing ideologue. That in itself would not have been enough for Alabama though, and it was Moore's history of pedophilia coming back to haunt him that ultimately sank his campaign. In 2020 Alabama reverted to form as Jones lost to another dangerous rightwing ideologue in Tuberville (sans pedophilia predilection) by twenty points.
Nick Saban, being a smart guy and the winningest coach in terms of national championships in college football history, would know the odds would be stacked against him, even if he were interested in such an endeavour.

As head coach of the Crimson Tide, Nick Saban is familiar with recruiting pitches.
On Wednesday, as reports circulated the University of Alabama coaching legend is retiring, Saban found himself on the other side of those pitches -- as a possible candidate for office.
The Alabama Democratic Party on Wednesday hinted it would be open to Saban running for U.S. Senate under its banner.
“Nick Saban for US Senate. Save us from Tommy Tuberville one more time,” tweeted Alabama Political Reporter columnist Josh Moon.
The Alabama Democratic Party retweeted Moon’s tweet, adding “We officially second this.”
Twitter lit up with instant memes.
As for Tuberville, he doesn't seem concerned about a Nick Saban run for U.S. Senate.
