NY Train Derails: Four Deaths, Multiple Injuries Reported
NEW YORK (WABC) -- Authorities say a Metro-North train has derailed in the Bronx, and multiple injuries are reported.
It happened at 7:20 Sunday morning at Palisades Avenue and Independence Avenue in the Spuyten Duyvel section.
Police say four cars are off the tracks and two are on their side.
The train was the 5:54 a.m. out of Poughkeepsie due to arrive at Grand Central Station at 7:43 a.m.
Firefighters, rescue workers and ambulances have responded to the scene, and some firefighters broke through windows to remove passengers from the train.
A number of passengers have been taken out on stretchers.
A passenger who was on the train, Frank Tatulli, told Eyewitness News he takes the train every Sunday morning, and that it was travelling at a higher rate of speed than it normally does. Tatulli said he got out of the train on his own, and suffered head and neck injuries.
The train came off the tracks just as it was coming around a sharp curve.

[...] At a court hearing in November following an earlier derailment on the New Haven Branch of the Metro-North railroad on May 17, a railroad official said that maintenance on the network was way behind schedule.
At the National Transportation Safety Board hearing in Washington DC chief engineer Robert Puciloski said the railway was “behind in several areas” including a five year schedule of cyclical maintenance and that there was no system in place to replace retiring workers.
