-Against the backdrop of outrage in Congress over sexual abuse in the military, there was a nationwide moment of silence Saturday for a North County soldier. It coincided with renewed calls for the truth about how Lavena Johnson died.

At exactly 10:00am, thousands of people around the country joined in a moment of silence in honor of Army Private First Class Lavena Johnson. It would’ve been her 28th birthday. She was killed 8 years ago in Iraq in what Army officials ruled a suicide. Her family and friends did not buy that then and most certainly do not buy that now.

John and Linda Johnson, Lavena’s parents, clutched hands and bowed their heads along with thousands who pledged to join them via Facebook and their daughter’s website. They pledge to continue the investigation into her death.

I wrote about Pfc. LaVena Johnson on Friday, "No Justice, No Peace: Remembering Pfc. LaVena Johnson," and there is more information about her death there, as well as a link to a petition calling on Obama to please get to the truth about her death, if you're so inclined to add your name.
