August 23, 1951 - Korean Truce Talks And Iranian Oil.
News of this day for August 23, 1951 - Korean Truce talks break down (again), Iran and Britain at loggerheads over oil situation. The House of Representatives gets ready to go on vacation. The subject is still the economy and Price Controls.
This day in 1951 was about the ongoing war in Korea and bogged down truce talks. With accusations flying back and forth including the claim of an assassination attempt, the negotiations were painfully slow at best - non-existent at worst. It was another day in Korea.
And in Iran it was another day of back-and-forth with Britain over oil. The Mossadegh government was adamant over their refusal to accept Britain's demands for a bigger share of oil profits. And Britain was girding up for a game of hardball with a fleet sailing into the Persian Gulf and troops polishing up gun sites on the Iran-Iraq border.
Meanwhile, the House of Representatives were getting ready to head out the door for summer recess, but not before President Truman reminded them of that little called Price Controls and once again the Economy took center stage.
Considering what kind of day this current one is shaping up into, 1951 seems like a breeze in comparison. But that was sixty years ago.
The News is from CBS and The Edward R. Murrow Program with Don Hollenbeck substituting for August 23, 1951.
