Beirut and the continuing evacuation of several thousand PLO militia to Jordan and Iraq after Israeli forces invaded Lebanon in July. Lebanon, in an attempt to inject some stability to the region, elected Bashir Gemayel to the Presidency of Lebanon. Gemayel, a 34 year old member of the powerful Christian Phalangist Party would not see inauguration before being assassinated by a car bomb. Eventually a peacekeeping force made up of French, American and Italian troops would land in Beirut to maintain some semblance of calm.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Philip Habib was overseeing what became a very messy situation. Unfortunately, it only got worse over time.
