It's been said that Trumpeter Art Farmer became better known to listeners after his death than he was during his lifetime. I don't know how true that is. He was certainly prolific, and his collaborations with Gigi Gryce have been legendary. But the track tonight is off an album that was curiously out of print for a very long time.

Recorded in 1957 and released in 1958 by the ABC-Paramount label (not Impulse as you'd imagine), this album features Farmer in a setting a lot of Jazz musicians wanted to do in the 1950's; play with a full orchestra (and strings) accompanying them.

In this case, it's Quincy Jones and the album Last Night When We Were Young was the result. Why it gathered dust on a shelf until 2008 when it was finally reissued on CD in the UK is beyond me. But that's a story all too common where Jazz is concerned.

Tonight's track is the Dizzy Gillespie penned Tangerine and it's vintage Farmer and vintage Quincy Jones.

Sometimes things just get overlooked.
