The Dave Clark Five always reminded me of the kind of group that didn't want to play it safe, but somehow had to. Early on, when bands from Britain came over, the stage uniform was the big thing - matching suits. Where The Beatles characterized cool with basic black and collarless, The Dave Clark Five always looked like they were booked to play a cruise ship.
And what's more - popularity among bands usually meant if you liked one group, you really couldn't like the other. If you were a fan of The Beatles, chances were you really couldn't stand The Dave Clark Five and vice versa. The Dave Clark Five were always considered the squeaky clean version of what an otherwise edgy band was supposed to be like.
Granted, The Dave Clark Five really weren't ground breaking, not really innovative, but they did have some good songs to their credit and they did have a string of hits between 1964 and 1967.
One of those songs was Thinking Of You Baby which, curiously enough wasn't issued as a single here as it was in the UK where it hit number 26 on the charts in 1964. It did wind up on a soundtrack album to the movie Get Yourself A College Girl before quietly vanishing.
If you aren't familiar with it, try to cast your mind back to 1964 and pretend you're hearing this on the radio. If you are familiar with it, you'll be pleasantly surprised to note that it's in stereo here, I think for the first time.
Either way . . . it's almost Friday.
