Sunday Gramophone - Nathaniel Shilkret - Trombone Concerto - Leopold Stokowski - 1945

Sunday Gramophone - A recording of a broadcast performance of Nathaniel Shilkret's Trombone Concerto with Hoyt Bohannon, Trombone and The Los Angeles Philharmonic conducted by Leopold Stokowski - live at the Hollywood Bowl - July 28, 1945

Nathaniel Shilkret - Big Band, Soundtracks, but not so much known for the "long hair stuff".

It's this piece we're featuring today. A private issue set of discs recorded at The Hollywood Bowl on July 28, 1945, featuring the Los Angeles Philharmonic led by Leopold Stokowski (who announces the piece on the recording) with Hoyt Bohannon on Trombone.

Ironically, there doesn't seem to be any record of Dorsey actually performing this piece. And after several tries (which never happened because of timing or agreements) and several revisions, it was set down and pretty much forgotten about until a recent re-discovery of this piece brought about new interest in it.

I don't think this particular recording has ever been available commercially so you probably get to hear it here first, roughly two months after it received its World Premier in New York.
