From the DFH/psych-folk classic Oar, recorded by Skip Spence with no other musicians, directly following a release from a mental hospital and a nonstop motorcycle ride (in pajamas) from NYC to Nashville.

The tale of Spence, the original drummer of Jefferson Airplane and founding guitarist of Moby Grape, is truly heartbreaking saga of drug addiction, mental illness and total brilliance. After trying to chop down his bandmate's hotel room door with an axe in 1968, Spence spent much of his life from until his death in 1999 homeless or in mental institutions. Oar, a sprawling and gorgeous mess recorded in 1969, is the closest Spence ever came to coming up for air.
