At the beginning of the year, Dave Grohl released a documentary on the legendary Sound City Studios. In its day, Sound City was host to acts ranging from Tom Petty to Queens of the Stone Age. However, in the past few years, Sound City fell on hard times and was forced to shut down. This inspired Grohl to make the documentary in an attempt to accurately preserve Sound City's legacy. Aside from interviewing many great musical artists and discussing the studio, the movie also chronicles the recording of an album that was made at Grohl's personal studio with equipment from Sound City. This track, "Mantra", is a collaboration between Grohl, Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), and Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age. While this is only the rhythm section track before overdubs, it is a fine display of talent by these three musicians. If you're a rock music fan and have listened to any rock album in the past 40 years, chances are some of your favorites have come out of Sound City. Be sure to check out this wonderful documentary and find out some of the history behind the studio that defined rock production in its time.
