By John Amato Thursday Jun 28, 2007 10:20pmSome DC pundits are a little slow. Broder turns on Cheney:
Cheney used his years of experience, as a former White House chief of staff, as the secretary of defense and as the House Republican whip -- and all the savvy that moved him into those positions -- to amass power and use it in the Bush administration. He was more than a match for the newcomers to the White House, and he outfoxed even the veterans of past administrations when it came to the bureaucratic wars...read on

Sounds more like Broder admires him some Cheney. The circle-jerk will continue.
Don't be too willing to fall for Broder's line. He helped all this happen and now that the piles of evidence about the naked criminality of the Bush regime has mounted too high to ignore, he's trying to salvage what little credibility he ever had.

Up to our necks with dead canaries in the coal mine, and all of a sudden Broder thinks something might be awry. Gawd help us.

someone may want to ask rush if 329 U.S. servicepeople died on the streets of those cities in the last three months.
john you should put more of your own music up on this site.
I WISH that commentators would get the emphasis right. It's not simply that Cheney is a former CEO of Halliburton, it's that his career before and after is all public service and that there was no reason to think he could lead a big corporation but there was plenty of reason to think he'd provide access and influence. And didn't he come through for them just? Plus now he's a bazillionaire. Who'd a thunk a congressman from Wyoming would make out so well. Let's talk about THAT instead of implying that his corporate experience somehow landed him a spot in the Administration.
"A huge bomb explosion followed by a hail of gunfire and grenades killed five U.S. soldiers, the military said Friday. The attack climaxed the deadliest three-month period for the Americans since the war began." Bush said this week things are going well in Iraq. When does a nation save itself from a sociopath and his Rasputin, Dick Cheney?
Seven soldiers were wounded in the attack Thursday in the Rasheed district, a mixed Sunni-Shiite area of southern Baghdad where U.S.-led forces recently stepped up pressure on extremists. The commander of U.S. forces in Baghdad suggested the ambush could be part of an escalating backlash by Sunni insurgents.
Those deaths brought to 99 the number of U.S. troops killed this month, according to an Associated Press count. The toll for the past three months — 329 — made it the deadliest quarter for U.S. troops in Iraq since the March 2003 invasion. That surpasses the 316 soldiers killed during November 2004 to January 2005.

Cheney's only ace is the "Authority Card". I'm the Vice President. The second most powerful position on Earth. Your a measly rank and file. You don't tell me what to do. You work for me. Without me you'd be nothing. Now shut up and do what your told and what you were hired to do or pack your bags and leave. In fact, it's time you spend some time with family. Your fired. Now get out here. Guards. Escort this person out of the building.
And he gets away with it.
2007 is the second warmest year.
Keith Olbermann, thank you. I watched Countdown tonight and your commentary, humor and excellent piece on Murdoch was, as always, enlightening, But your commentary on Coulter's appearance on 'Hardball' made me clap. Bravo!

By a 217-209 vote, the House fails to defund Cheney. Would have been funny to see how mad he would have been without money. Wait a minute, he's always mad anyway. 6/30 [buzzflash]
DON'T WORRY!
Seriously, Cheney and Bush will renege on this power grab, and actually pass some tough executive orders limiting the powers and secrecy of the Executive Branch fairly soon. Like, say, in 2008, five days before leaving office.
Now I know what's missing with this new format-- the count of people on line. What happened to that, anyway, it was kind of cool to watch it go up and down.
Also, going to comments takes over the whole window, instead of opening a new one just for comments.
nsr, right-click on the "comments" link and select like "open an new window/tab". It's no big deal. Not having Gravatars is more irritating IMHO.

Haha. I was just posting on this. Hey, it's sad it took the Angler series to make Broder to wise up, but better late than never, I guess!
Stanley Rosenthal @ 35:
Whadya know. Thx, SR.
I return with day-old snark from Mr. Wolcott:
To exploit the (immigration) bill's unpopularity, Romney's crack team of advisors had planned to strap an illegal alien to the top of Romney's motorcade limo and chauffeur the undocumented worker around New Hampshire from campaign stop to campaign stop...If Romney were Fred Thompson or Rudy Giuliani, he could strap an ex-wife to the top of his car, but given that that option is denied him perhaps he and his political team should just forget the whole thing.
Y thanX John @ 37! I used to always say (before I arrived here on C&L) that "You cannot stand up to the bully, if cannot recognize the bully", maybe I'll change it to "You cannot fight "the machine", if you don't know how to operate "the machine". :-)
(err., must be drunk, left out a "you") " ... if you cannot recognize the bully." I guess I'm out of practice saying that.
Try this cool poll that picks your candidate for you based on a dozen questions.

Thats the way Joe Scar works it all the time.

He admitted he was wrong. I'll cut him some slack. I knew a few people who thought the same thing and in no way were they looking to enthrone a vice president.

A particularly spot-on (short) article about cheney (and Bush) by Eleanor Clift in this week's Newsday: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19507575/site/newsweek/
I mistakenly listened to Hannity in the car yesterday. He had a guest that had written about Hillary and was trying to get Hannity to at least acknowledge that she has always had religious faith. The good bit was a discussion about the evils of "Bush derangement syndrome" with Hannity then denying that he suffered from "Hillary derangement syndrome".... His objections to her are based purely on the facts.. ;). Right.
Thank goodness all the problems have been solved in this country, such that the news channels can afford to bring us 24/7 coverage of the London carbomb situation.
FEAR is our Biggest Enemy.
Cheney is the Next.
Impeach Cheney.
Broder's just mad because Cheney is hurting Bush, his one true God.
this guy cheney absolutely feels that he's been beyond reproach. why, well look at all he has done thus far and he's been given a skating license. now if he could be nailed, trust me, he would squeal like a stuck pig. he would be dropping dimes on anyone and everyone. he is the key to toppling this corrupt house of cards. all efforts need to be focused on taking this kingpin down. heaven knows with his corrupt ties to corporate contracts with iraq that there is plenty there for impeachment, and that's not even going with his allegation that he is not part of the executive branch solely to avoid handing over documents or testifying. it's there. it only need tenacity on the part of the justice system to bring him down. and remember, he is key to all of it.
Bit NOLA @ 5:
I think you're right! On second glance, it reads like admiration of the thoroughness and excellent execution of the coup.
phlounder @ 23:
New CBS Poll: More Americans than ever before, 77 percent, say the war is going badly, up from 66 percent just two months ago. Nearly half, 47 percent, say it's going very badly. Sixty-six percent say the number of U.S. troops in Iraq should be decreased, including 40 percent who want all U.S. troops removed. That's a 7-point increase since April. [via buzzflash]
Broder's next essay applauds Mussolini getting the trains to run on time, and Hitler's maintenance of 'Law and Order'.
Articles of Impeachment against Bush and Cheney
by Eternal Hope
Fri Nov 24, 2006 at 04:10:20 PM PDT
If we are to impeach, we must impeach both Bush and Cheney. It will not do any good for us to impeach Bush and have Cheney take the Oval Office and pick someone just as radical as he is. It will also not do any good for us to impeach just Cheney and allow Bush to groom John "I'm not knowledgeable" McCain for the 2008 election. Therefore, we must simultaneously impeach both of them so that the 3rd person in succession, Nancy Pelosi, would become the next President of the United States.

Poll
Do you support or oppose the simultaneous impeachment and removal from office of George Bush and Dick Cheney for the offenses listed above?
Obama says impeachment is not acceptable, yet he also says, 'I think you reserve impeachment for grave, grave breeches, and intentional breeches of the president's authority.' Barack, re-read your own sentence and you will see your standard has already been met. [buzzflash-6/30]

I agree, it's impeachment time.
I don't know why the dems won't start the procedure.
This is why the dems make me sick.
Why is the impeachment bar lowered when it comes to impeaching dems?
Pelosi and the rest of them can be voted out or kicked out maybe then we can get someone who will do the job.
David Broder never turned on Cheney. Broder is Cheney's chief mouthpiece among the Washington Leisure Crowd.
Life with Barack
Sen Barack Obama:
"Senator Obama cosponsored the Combat Meth Act, which provides more money for fighting methamphetamine (meth), tightens controls on the sale of meth ingredients, and provides assistance to the children of meth abusers. The legislation would limit access to cold medicines containing pseudoephedrine, the primary ingredient used to make methamphetamine. This bill passed the Senate and became law in the 109th Congress." http://obama.senate.gov/issues/crime/index.html
2007 National Drug Threat Assessment of the National Drug Intelligence Center of the U.S. Department of Justice:
"Methamphetamine production and distribution trends are undergoing significant strategic shifts, resulting in new challenges to law enforcement and public health agencies. For example, marked success in decreasing domestic methamphetamine production through law enforcement pressure and strong precursor chemical sales restrictions has enabled Mexican DTOs (drug trafficking organizations) to rapidly expand their control over methamphetamine distribution—even in eastern states—as users and distributors who previously produced the drug have sought new, consistent sources. These Mexican methamphetamine distribution groups (supported by increased methamphetamine production in Mexico) are often more difficult for local law enforcement agencies to identify, investigate, and dismantle because they typically are much more organized and experienced than local independent producers and distributors. Moreover, these Mexican criminal groups typically produce and distribute high purity ice methamphetamine that usually is smoked, potentially resulting in a more rapid onset of addiction to the drug.
Recent precursor chemical controls have contributed to a sharp decrease in domestic methamphetamine production: ...In 2005 federal legislation also restricted retail precursor chemical sales. Retail sales restrictions—supported by sustained law enforcement pressure—have limited the amount of pseudoephedrine available to smallscale methamphetamine producers, resulting in a sharp decrease in the prevalence of small methamphetamine laboratories nationally." http://www.usdoj.gov/ndic/pubs21/21137/21137p.pdf
Rush limpballs says; All endangered animals are the ones we dont eat.
Norwegian Rats

Crows are a few we dont eat that are plentiful, Plus we eat salmon and dick cheney killed 70,000 of them and now are endangered in the pacific Noethwest. Another day another Limpballs LIE!
Mark my words, it is the Republicans who are behind getting rid of Cheney at this time. They want him out of office before the 2008 campaign season heats up so that Cheney's misdeeds will not tarnish the GOP. Whenever anything is brought up about Plame, warrantless spying, etc in any debates, the Republicans will scream "That was Dick Cheney and he's long gone! Stop being so obsessed with one man! Dick Cheney is not the Republican party!"
That motherfucker needs a dose of his own medicine. What the hell is taking Congress so long? And why aren't more people in Congress behind Leahy, Waxman, Kucinich???
OVP blinks, and Congress decides to not block funding, for now.
Fair warning for OVP: If you are stupid, Congress could vote again. If OVP doesn't blink next time, Congress might be nice.
Play nice, Dick. Congress isn't your friend. They are your political opposition. You blinked again. IT's becoming a habit.
This comment appears to not grasp the 25th Amendment giving both the DNC Controlled House and Senate, not just the Senate, a say in the President's nomination for Cheney's replacemnet:Eggmann @ 67:
Why would the GOP create a vacancy that the House DNC majority wold have to agree? 25th Amendment subject the President's VP-nomination to both House and Senate Confirmation.
Not likely the GOP would want to create a hole the House could refuse to fill, and leave Speaker Pelosi to fill in the order of succession.
It's not a credible assertion GOP wants Cheney out and is taking action; they may not like him, but they're stuck with him. Any GOP effort to remove Cheney means the DNC would have a vote on who Bush has as his number 2. No way. GOP would never seriously do this.
>>Why would the GOP create a vacancy that the House DNC majority wold have to agree?
Bush will nominate Rice and if Democrats grill her on her abysmal record, the GOP will scream racism. Somebody has to take over the office of VP and it really doesn't matter who it is, so if Rice fails to get approval, Bush can nominate anybody in the GOP. My guess, if Rice failed, is that Bush would nominate someone that almost nobody has ever heard of before, some Republican in Congress who does not set off fire alarms and who would remain obscure if s/he was not elevated to the office of VP. Someone with a mundane voting record who is no worse than some of the anti-choice Democrats who were elected in 2006. This person would accept the office of the VP because it would get them in the history books. They would not care about taking over after Cheney because s/he would be so benign as to be almost nonexistent. The Democrats would have to approve of someone whose voting record is not much more conservative than than 2006's crop of elected dems.
The GOP does want Cheney out. He has accomplished everything he (and the GOP) set out to accomplish. The federal government is in ruins, the country is awash in debt, the rich got richer, the middle class got poorer, corporate welfare was deepened into a bottomless pit, privatization has occurred at all levels of government. Dissenters in the Pentagon (all those generals who either resigned or were told to resign) and the Dept of State (we lost countless diplomats who resigned due to Cheney's meddling in State and his appointment of his own spies throughout the department - including his own daughter Elizabeth) have been purged and replaced with hacks and puppet neocons who will be there for years. Cheney's work is done.
His numbers are so bad that he has become a real liability. The GOP can soon blame him for warrantless spying and for the disaster in Iraq. Not outright - they will have their lackeys in the press print all sorts of articles like the one WaPo printed, as if somebody suddenly sat up and took notice after all these years (WaPo's article reminds me of a corpse suddenly sitting up in its casket - Whoops, how did that happen?). Don't worry, the "liberal" media has known all along what was going on, just like we did. It was convenient to allow Cheney to remain untouchable while he revamped the government and its services. He has been very effective for the GOP. But now it's time for him to step down in anticipation of the election campaigns and to be replaced with someone else. Bush will nominate some asshole, like Rice (the equivalent of Harriet Myers and Heckuvajob Brownie), then nominate someone more palatable. The Dems have to approve SOMEBODY as VP, they can't let the office go unfilled. Besides, they don't have the balls for a protracted standoff. They've caved over and over again and they will do it for the VP's office as well.
