Chris Matthews and Ann Coulter Sitting in a Tree...

matthewssized.jpgcoulter.jpg

My buddy, Media Bloodhound, has found some ties between Tweety and Coultergeist that may explain his willingness to give her uninterrupted and unchallenged airtime to spew her own particular form of bile.

I thought it was cause she's a rethuglican horn-dog's dream woman/swamp monster kind of thing. Either that or he was totally hard up for any news to report that wouldn't make his party look like complete assholes.

Same publisher. So what?

Al Franken has the same publisher as Edward Klein of the slimy book, "The Truth About Hillary," and Franken still held Klein accountable:

Tweety, like Coultergeist, will do almost anything for ratings. His obsession with the Clenis and manly-man Rethuglicans is legendary, exposing his own "issues." The conflict of interest vis-a-vis Coultergeist is unsurprising, but pathetic nonetheless. This is what progressives have to overcome in the months and years ahead in order to prevail.

He should be fired for non-disclosure.

Unless MSNBC supports this sort of thing-which would, conceivably, put them on the same level with Fox 'News'-if they weren't already really there, that is.

I have tuned out everything on MSNBC except Countdown. I see John Ridley is trying to be the morals equevilant on MSNBC that Bill Orally is on Faux. What's up with this shit. People do have "private lives" and and Ridley and Orally are not qualified to judge their actions. I want to see their Doctor Degrees in psycology. They're both full of shit.

Given this conflict of interest, Chris Matthews is, as a GE employee, deeply in violation of GE's Code of Conduct - the "Spirit and Letter". He can be fired for the first offense. I might suggest a campaign to contact the GE Corporate Ombudsman with complaints, providing links to this C&L thread and to the article on Media Bloodhound. I am told that they take this kind of ethical breach very seriously.

I'm not sure what the big deal is here. So the same company will publish his book and hers. That's not much more of a conflict of interest than any television interviewer is always in. Without guests, the interviewer has no show. Attack your guests or make them look foolish and they won't come back. Since, at best, all of these shows, including Olbermann's, are just infotainment, then the focus is (and should be) ratings. Ann Coulter generates ratings. Even those who hate her (and there are many) will watch her just to be outraged.

Now if you can prove that Mathews actually got paid money to shill for her, then that story would generate enough ratings for Matthews' competitors to run with it. Anything less is just business as usual.

I don't watch Matthews or Coulter, I don't tune into his show and if she is on a show I would surely turn it off...even if it's Real Time with Bill Maher...I will not support anyone who puts that trash on the air. and to the people who do watch her, weather your watch because you like her or because she gets your dander up the shame on you, you should know better...and really when there are so many things in America to piss us off, do we really need to watch Coulter just to be outraged?

Well if they wanted attention, they sure got it. Look how long we have been talking about this. I'm thinking their publisher is loving this. I have a friend who writes op-eds for a newspaper. She says if she writes a piece and the editor doesn't hear anything about it, that's not good. If she writes a piece that gets a whole bunch of people ticked off and they raise hell about it, her editor loves it.

Just sayin'

It's official; I'm an idiot. Why would NBC (owned by an energy company/defense contractor) worry about this comparatively minor conflict of interest in it's news coverage?

They're only relevant when you pay attention to anything they say. Coulter knows she's got a limited shelf life, gotta keep making noise when no one is listening. P.T. Barnum would be proud of her.

best thing is to turn the crap off, because Mathews IS a " media Whore", pimping books for the racist guy Coulter, ignoring his racism and lies. for what, to be a good little corporate lapdog. Just like Russert showing up on EVERY cable show including FOX, pimping his little folksy Daddy books , when they should be going to QVC, not using a " news" program to line their pockets . These cable shows are nothing more then SHAMS .

mr. crap's picture

Coulter and Malkin say what the GOP really thinks. Hosts like Billo and Matthews use these people as regular guest to for the same reason - to same what they can't without damaging their creditability and claim to objectivity. Olbermann does the same thing except his regular guest include Millbank, Fineman, and Turly. The difference is one side offers insight and a glimse of untold truths and the other side provides hate, crap, and lies. The funny part is Malkin and Coulter dumb themselve down to do their job while the other side does not in order to serve their purpose.

The simple reality is this there are no boundaries for people like Coulter, but there are for people like Al Sharpton and Cindy Shehan. Is Coulter's bit the floor or the ceiling for politcal discourse today? The issue isn't merely what she says, it's what can't she say but does with immunity from the media backing her because she "sells books."

Coulter isn't the problem - she's the symptom of corporate media corruption. Her career would be over if today's corporate media believed that Money doesn't trump morality and civility. It's about ratings and her political Howard Stern routine serves their agenda, not ours.

It's not just Ann Coulter, it's any ratings-booster he can get in there at all. Tweety's ratings must be sucking. Yesterday he had Bruce Willis of all people on his show. I like Bruce and all, but the guy sounds like he knows politics about as well as say... any fine above-average chimpanzee. I mean, it was just ridiculous. Willis couldn't even articulate much more than, "People should care about the troops..." I despise Matthews. He's an incredulous, sexist attention hog.

Matthews got a book deal from the SAME publisher as Coulter's. The form of payment isn't always in cash. This stinks to high heaven, and anyone would be naive NOT to think that Matthews received some form of "payola" for his promotions of Coulter.

We can only hope that GE will fire Matthews for a clear non-disclosure of a conflict, at the very least, and an ethical violation (choosing guests that enrich the host) at worst.

Eric Jaffa's picture

Chris Matthews has lots of guests on his show. Of course, some of them will have the same publisher he does.

If Matthews had a different publisher, then one could say, "Aha!, he had Mr. Smith on his show because they have the same publisher."

No meaningful conflict-of-interest was proven.

Random with all its imprints is the largest publisher in North America. So Matthews and Coulter share a publisher

Now - IF there are contractual agreements requiring Matthews or paying Matthews to promote Coulter's dreck, THAT would be huge. It would well result in the early retirement of Matthews and a couple of Random execs.

Chances are - if such a contract exists, it is oral. Written would be way too dangerous.

Coulter is a pathetic excuse for a human being, but her ability to be on the NYT Bst Seller list is testimony to the political sophistication of a large number of Americans to say nothing of their pathetic sense of what is right and what is wrong.

Coulter should be cleaning toilets at Random, not selling books for them.

Matthews belongs in the midnight slot of a 5000 watt AM station.

Has anyone else noticed that Coulter has pretty much dropped off the radar screen since Mrs. Edwards cut her off at the knees? In the past her shitty remarks have generally gained her television appearances a shelf life of around six weeks before she slinks back into the confines of her sub-human existance to total up the tally of her latest fact absent fiasco.
I think the right power has figured out what a liability this non-human, piece of shit is and decided to reel her in.

The bloodhound article is fascinating in its exploration of the Random House connection between Coulter and Matthews. What's even more fascinating is that the Matthew's interview keeps referencing the book. The bloodhound article gives us the kind of investigative journalism that the mainstream media does not do because it is so involved in marketing, selling, cross-marketing, and profiteering itself. By the way, my wife and I decided to turn off Matthews because of his uneven and strange behavior. When you watch him you know there are hidden agendas operating but it is never quite clear what they are. Why is he so fawning one minute for one guest and ready to pounce on someone the next. Giving Ann Coulter an hour on his show and throwing soft balls at her is really bizarre behavior for a guy who promotes himself as asking the tough questions and calls his show 'Hardball'. Calling Coulter a genius because she launches outrageous ad hominem attacks against others is just a bizarre attitude to take. This article helps explain this kind of erratic behavior. For Matthews it's just about the buck and self-promotion (as I believe it is for Coulter as well). Well if that is what he is after it can best be done out of sight in the bathroom using one hand. We don't need to watch it. Great piece.
