What gives Chertoff the right to tell the country that he has a "gut" feeling that we're going to be hit with a terrorist attack this summer?
"Summertime seems to be appealing to them," he said of al-Qaeda. "We do worry that they are rebuilding their activities."
Still, Chertoff said there are not enough indications of an imminent plot to raise the current threat levels nationwide. And he indicated that his remarks were based on "a gut feeling" formed by past seasonal patterns of terrorist attacks, recent al-Qaeda statements, and intelligence he did not disclose. There is an assessment "not of a specific threat, but of increased vulnerability," he added.
The administration said they had proof Iraq was going to nuke us so we could invade them. Better get Jack Bauer on the case. He's supposed to protect us and make sure that doesn't happen. Where does he get off inciting fear throughout this country? He's not employed to tell us his feeling or his inner child. He should be instructing all of Homeland Security to be on high alert and not try to scare the beejesus out of America.
This is a calculated move to ratchet up the terror in this country to help Republican candidates---PERIOD. They are far behind in raising money and in all the polls. He should be fired, but of course since he's being instructed to say these things (sounds like a Cheney/Rove play) he won't be. What a tool...Update: I forgot about Tom Ridge's phony terror alerts ...This White House will never stop lying to us.

This news story is so silly. How can this loser Chertoff know that al Queda is 'rebuilding' and planning a summer attack? So if 9/11 and 7/7 hapened during the summer, it is foregone conclusion that we will be attacked this summer? This has shades of the summers 2002 and 2004 when the GOP was ratcheting up the alerts frequently. It shouldn't work this time.
The abandoned red piece of luggage found in Times Square was supposed to be a big story this afternoon. Yahoo News had a big red alert on their front page for about a minute. Then it was taken down. Ditto with the Oakland airport terminal scare. Nice try.
And look at the wire story in question. At the bottom, it gives examples of summertime al Qaeda plots. Note that the second one is the bullshit liquid bomb scare from last year, which came about partially because of Ned Lamont's victor over Lieberman in the CT primary. Um, 9/11 was a summer attack (albeit, post Labor Day). Why the hell isn't it listed as a historic example.
This story is worthless. I don't care of an incompetant Bushie says he is worried. That means nothing.

Data on Americans Mined for Terror Risk
Former Senator Rick Santorum was on Hugh Hewitt's show Saturday and pretty much said the same thing. Today, senior intelligence officials told Brian Ross of ABC news that a small Al Queda cell is on its way or is already here. Pretty clear to me that George Bush has a plan to resurrect his failed Presidency. It should be very very interesting to see if the media gets behind him this time or not, should there be an attack.
If there is a terrorist attack, which I sincerely hope there isn't, it will be 2 attacks under Bush's watch. Let's not forget the GOP controlled Congress and president still failed to implement all of the 9/11 recommendations to improve our security in this country. Also, the GOP was going to even sell off our ports foreign entities in Dubai which meant very few barrels would be throroughly checked for bombs, etc. How about the overextension of the military that has taken our National Guard troops overseas when their main jobs are supposed to protect the people of their individual states.
The only thing I'm afraid of is that Cheney needs a reason to bomb
and he needs to find that reason fast. He could allow a reason.

Nice to know how he and his boss feels. If state and local officials screw up by not reacting quickly enough to a potentially devastating catastrophe, they will sit back and do nothing. Wonderful people. And you know they would react exactly the same way if a similar situation were to strike an area that has money. I think that W and the gang feel that minorities and poor people are either not worth helping or are not U.S. citizens so they don't need to be responsible for them. That's probably from one of those long conversations W had with his personal diety.

Just want to point out that Chertoff not interested in dwelling in any past. A past that displays his incompetence. Shall never learn from it and therefore is fated to repeat it.
And as much as Chertoff wanted to convey that everyone knew the levees would break and it was dangerous to live in such a place. He doesn't explain why he thinks it is OK to live in California on the San Andreas fault. With devastating earthquakes or Florida that is pounded yearly with hurricanes and expensive rebuilding and lose of life, then there is always the States that are prone to tornadoes. Does Chertoff think everyone needs to move out of these areas?

People, in general, are gullible and ignorant (and my apologies for the generalisations). Many believe what they read in the papers or hear/see on the TV, even though they will say "Oh, you can't believe anything in the papers..." OR " "Don't believe everything you read" etc.... BUT THEY DO !!
It infuriates me and never fails to amaze, but it happens all the time, always has and always will.

He is in fact an Israeli citizen by descent. In other words, Israeli law grants a child born to an Israeli mother (or father) immediate citizenship, regardless of that child's country of birth. His mother WAS an Israeli citizen and worked as a flight attendant for EL AL.
And guess what else? They will need to enforce martial law to some extent. The Nat Guard is depleted and unable to respond to any real attack. I agree with Time for Gravel (comment 125) and Paul (comment 126): Chertoff's comments are most likely motivated by a desire to distract the press and the public from the rather disastrous series of scandals plaguing the Bush White House at present. It's basic Terror Management Theory: when people are primed with thoughts of death, most tend to express greater support for authoritarian and/or charismatic leaders like our alleged president, and become more accepting of authoritarian governmental practices. Thus, when faced with increasing evidence of governmental improprieties originating in the Executive Branch, they seek to bolster their support by reminding the public of the threat of terrorist attack. Google "terror management theory" or see my post on the subject here for more information (warning: it's a really long post).
Of course, I suspect that there is a Boy Who Cried Wolf factor at work in public perception of all these increased terror alerts, though I do not have scientific evidence to back up that theory, only anecdotal evidence. In other words, repeated claims that we are facing an imminent terrorist attack begin to lose their effect after a while when no actual attack happens, and people will stop reflexively backing their charismatic/authoritarian leader. Which is why I ventured into Paranoid Conspiracy Theory Land in the above-referenced post and speculated that in fact a realistic-looking terrorist attack attempt (e.g., one where DHS/FBI/CIA agents "discovered" a nuclear device plot in a major city) might be manufactured by neocons in the run-up to the 2008 presidential election. These guys are getting seriously nervous about losing control, and a cornered animal is the most dangerous...
