Something we recently tried to do here in Humboldt County, California, is to put an end to corporate personhood, where the corporate entity is given the same rights as an individual. Although this is abused on many levels, the key point was to limit the ability of corporations to contribute to and influence candidates. Unfortunately, it was struck down by a federal court.

Its interesting how much conservatives preach personal responsibility, when the corporate structure they promote and support is set up around avoiding accountability.

On the issue of corporations, it really is the source of a lot of our problems. With globalization, there is so much money at stake that decisions that compromise safety, ethics, environment are no brainers when there are billions to be added to the bottom line.

there is no way a proprietor would open themselves to the liability that billions in sales brings. but the way that it is currently set up, there is no risk to a corporation. There are no more constraints to size. Going back to proprietorships would limit the size of companies, increase the number of companies and bring true competition back to the market place.

The problem with tazers is that they have become a tool that replaces negotiation techniques and people skills. Instead of diffusing situations and resolving problems non-violently, police officers now have a "less than lethal" weapon they think can be a substitute for all the above. It simply isn't. Reason is replaced with force and similarities can even be seen in our foreign policy. More often than not, war and bombings replace diplomacy or economic sanctions.

Something is fundamentally wrong with the people in power in this country.

Fellow patriots, take heart.

I just returned from the September 15th impeachment/anti-war march in DC and we were 100,000 strong. The DC police arrested 190 loyal patriots, abusing many of them, including dislocating the shoulder of a 60+ year old female patriot. And yet amazingly, she was with us on September 18th, her arm in a sling, when we went through both the Senate and House of Representatives visiting those who should be representing us and letting them know that the American people had awoken and we were not going away.

Of course it is clear that neither the Republican or Democratic parties are going to restore our Constitution or the rule of law it embraces, so for one of the very few times in American history an independent political convention is being organized. That's right, we are no longer going to simply have Republican and Democratic conventions, we are also going to have an American one.

And the American's are going to win.

One of the bravest patriots I have ever had the privilege to meet and work with, the founder of Grassroots America Tina Richards, is organizing the new convention and if you're tired of simply complaining then support the new non-affiliated convention and the organizations implementing it, and relegate the Republican and Democratic parties to the dust-bin of history, where they belong.

You can visit Grassroots America at grassrootsamerica4us.org.

In yet another example of Democracy Now! propaganda, today while covering the Kerry incident in S. Florida there was specifically no mention of the Senator's protest of those events.

•• Why would Dem Now! not want to report his statement? Why would they want to leave the impression that he had no response?

• You might as well ask why Dem Now! failed to report Candidate Kerry's first debate statement: "The United States has no legitimate longterm policy of staying in Iraq."

Senator John Kerry:

“In 37 years of public appearances, through wars, protests and highly emotional events, I have never had a dialogue end this way. I believe I could have handled the situation without interruption, but I do not know what warnings or other exchanges transpired between the young man and the police prior to his barging to the front of the line and their intervention.

I asked the police to allow me to answer the question and was in the process of responding when he was taken into custody. I was not aware that a taser was used until after I left the building. I hope that neither the student nor any of the police were injured. I regret enormously that a good healthy discussion was interrupted."

El.Kabong's picture

I'm surprised no one has picked up on this. They have for years been calling others what they know they are. I really think it's planned. Kinda like "they would never call us that because it's what we call them.

Islamofascists - this tag is unbelievably inane. To be a facsist, you need 3 things: a population, a state and big business that is supported by the state at the expense of the population. One could argue that the terrorists have a population, but they don't have a state nor business. They can't be fascists, period. But they can....

Terrorists - 9/11 took 3,000 lives. Since then a smaller number have died as a result of terrorism, but to be safe, lets say its 7000 more. OK, total lives: 10,000. They have killed hundreds of thousand of innocents, wounded millions and displaced millions more. They've driven women and children into prostitution. They employ mercenaries who kill for fun. Whose the real terrorist here?

Immoral - Just use the Congressional republican dart board. Can't miss an adulterer or gay bashing, "i'm not" gay. Most times you get a two-fer.

Traitor, coward, fiscally irresponible, etc.. the list goes on and on.

It seems like they believe that if they use the word, they own it and it can't be brought against them.

Gosh, I'd love to here the MM point this out, but won't be holding my breath...

From my point of view, Kerry didn't do enough during the debate to warrant mentioning the statement he issued the following day. Why didn't he take any action except for (almost) whispering into the mic that he's willing to answer the question?

In context, the statement he released seems more like an insincere CYA to save face than anything else.

McDuff @ 57:

From my point of view, Kerry didn't do enough during the debate to warrant mentioning the statement he issued the following day. Why didn't he take any action except for (almost) whispering into the mic that he's willing to answer the question?

Why don't you ask him? Unlike you, I take Senator Kerry as a man who has proven himself over and over. For you, it's tabula rasa -- what has he done for you lately.

That student was overwrought and drew heat down on himself. I'm absolutely against TASERing of any kind except in felony situations and then only when otherwise deadly force is the alternative. But if the question that got the guy zapped that he had to ask so badly was if Senator Kerry was in a secret society (and if that is pertinent), he could instead have studied the good Senator's life and seen that:

• Unilke any Skull & Bonesmen in current view, John Kerry volunteered twice to serve in the military, the second time enlisting as an officer on a Swiftboat, for which he received a Silver Star.

• Unlike any SB, Kerry outed BCCI, Bush's brother's major scandal, and then he outed Iran/Contra -- an odd act for a Bonesman in a conspiracy with Republicans. And he outed the permanent airbases in the first debate of 2004.

For what purpose did Candidate Kerry out the airbases?

For what purpose did Democracy Now! FAIL TO REPORT Kerry's comments, before sixty million people, of the facts on the ground in Iraq? That was a heroic action along the lines we are pursuing, and yet chatterbox Amy can't fit in the announcement that the war is illegal and illegally about installing airbases, by a senior Senator.

And for this, all this, he's a co-conspirator? That guy got shocked for NOTHING. I've been a protester for decades, and it has not yet occured to me to berate Kerry over S&B, refuse to leave Conyers' office, or try to displace the first progressive woman Speaker in the history of the United States.

You lot have REALLY WEIRD priorities, strategies, and an absolute tin ear for honest persons in a dishonest and highly dangerous ongoing crisis.

I want to bathe when I realize I agree, even a tiny bit, with BILLO...but, while I think the tasering was completely inappropriate as a response to the behavior of this RUDE student...I do think he was aching for a seriously agressive response to his interrupting and ranting! All evidence of his prior activities suggests that he was not seriously concerned about exercising his right to FREE SPEECH...he wanted to create an incident...sadly, for him, he may have gotten more than he bargained for. Given the public appetite for Brittany, OJ, and other such trash stories - the appeal of YOUTUBE and other such sites - we should not be surprised that it will spawn more of such activities! No wonder this country is falling apart...way to go "merikins".....

Dancer @ 79:

he wanted to create an incident

Quite clearly he was hoping to sandbag the Senator and disrupt the event -- rather a Yippee approach.

The cops who tasered him did what cops elsewhere are doing with their new TASER toys -- and it is illegal.

Hey Gerry ,

[Deleted post-Sitemonitor]

Wow, that was quite a reaction to my very tongue-in-cheek, ironic take on Billo: when he was trying (pathetically) to smear Yearly Kos and use it to smear Democrats, he spewed ad nauseum about a picture (Lieberman getting ready to blow Bush) which he claimed had been "on DailyKos for a year", his only example and definitive proof that DailyKos is a "hateful" site. He said the word "vile" repeatedly to descibe the picture. Weren't you paying attention? Don't you have a sense of humor?

And to Chris @ 52: threats of violence and namecalling are the kind of bullying behavior that Bill O'Reilly thrives on. It would be great if we could at least rise above the lowest of the low on C&L...

A SHORT PLAY STARRING A REPUBLICAN AND HIS FRIEND

Friend: "Hey, here's an ad attacking Jack Murtha as a traitor."

Republican: "Ha, ha! Take that, wimps! Those Pussocrats can't handle the zingers!"

Friend: "Oh, wait, I read it wrong -- it's actually an ad questioning General Petraeus's honesty."

Republican: "Oh, that's horrible! How can those Democrats dare to attack the reputation of a veteran who's trying to protect us from Al Qaeda! FOR SHAME!

Friend: "Sorry, my mistake -- it's actually an ad praising Petraeus and accusing Democrats of wanting to fellate terrorists."

Republican: "YES! How much you want to bet they're all crying like babies? If those sissies can't take the heat, they should get out of the kitchen!"

Friend: "Whoops, that was on the next page -- it actually IS an ad criticizing Petraeus."

Republican: "Oh my gosh and golly, this is too offensive! I can barely remain standing, the shock and outrage I feel on Petraeus's behalf is so intense! Someone get me a paper bag to breathe into!"

Friend: "That's funny, it says 'Paid For By RightWingersForFreedom..."

Republican: "Sweet! I can't wait for all those whiny leftards to start clutching their handkerchiefs and crying 'foul'!"

Friend: "Shoot, I can't tell if this ad is a satire or not... hold on, let me read to the end..."

Republican: "Well, hurry up, so I know whether to act offended and horrified by the language or arrogantly supportive of it and contemptuous of offended and horrified Defeatocrats..."

Friend: "Hey, while I'm reading, could you keep your foot in your own stall, please?"

bush got a c- in econ 101.

how does one get a low grade in a 100 level class?
1) just plain dumb 2) immature a) parties too much b) never studies c) often skips class 3) 1+2.

i got 3 bad grades in college, one a huge honking F in a 6 credit hour course (a whole story in itself), a C in a statistics 300s level, and a C in Early American Lit. (didn't drop it soon enough; it was mental torture to read o'henry and cooper)

i honestly and truly know more at this moment, 25+ years later, about the F and the amer lit stuff than i do of the stat course. the stat course is the only one that i finished attending/studied for. i just didn't get statistics at that level. george didn't get economics at the 100 level.

So the Democrats hand Bush his no-laws law, go on vacation, come back, allow three important bills to be silently filibustered by the Republicans, then allow a bullshit RNC publicity stunt to occur and (in some cases) vote along with it.

The Democrats in Congress have proven that they are incapable of standing up to the Republicans' tricks and strategems. Absolutely incapable. The right has been essentially controlling the agenda on Capitol Hill since Newt Gingrich and Frank Luntz assembled the Contract on America.

What the fuck are we going to DO?!?

Curious's picture

DHS is out of control, reckless, and a threat to Americans. They need better oversight. This Congress refuses to provide it.

DHS has watchlists for air travel. Did you know they also have databases for internal movement by foot and vehicle? Just as you are stopped at the airline counter and asked questions, so too are law enforcement directed to target people. Law enforcement exchanges information related to travel. They will fabricate reasons to justify stopping someone. Even if there has been no crime committed, vehicle drivers will be stopped in the US, their vehicles searched -- despite a refusal to agree to a search -- and their personal papers in the vehicles reviewed.

The gaol of the surveillance is to gather information. Their aim is to affect behavior. Their goal is to dissuade the public from freely travel to open, public areas. Law enforcement may accuse you of crimes to shock you. Their goal is to make you believe you have to "defend" yourself. The same intrusiveness at airports affects all Americans on the streets. The problem is when law enforcement "really knows" something, but isn't able to find evidence. Law enforcement will demean and insult you to put you on the defensive. The curious thing: They're supposed to be public servants. It's becoming clear the real enemy isn't just abroad, but also in DHS. They are reckless. They provide illegal direction. The public is being forced to endure illegal searches, pretextual stops, and abuse.

DHS is doing this to protect their "right" to engage in abuse. The same problems occurred in Iraq and Afghanistan: The US government abused power, then created a backlash. It appears the DHS cares little whether there is a public backlash against the US government. Sad day when the US government appears more concerned with a "backlash from the Taliban" than a US citizen mass revocation of powers. When pushed, the US citizenry is just as a capable of changing their loyalities and supporting something marginally more interested in the rule of law.

So long as you delude yourself about the facts, you will continue to wring your hands at the wrong stuff.

You may want to notice that the Senate and the House are different bodies. What you call 'the Democrats' are in two flavors at least. The flavor in the House voted 90% NAY on that six-month time limited FISA extention (on the last day before the August break). And the NEW FISA bill will be coming up soon, which will address a host of issues that are current.

BTW, the reason why three bills were filibustered IS BECAUSE THEY WERE ADVANCED.

You can blame Democrats for FISA rollbacks (and fail to note that the rollback was for six months non-retroactively) -- you can also fail to note that there WOULD BE no FISA law without Democrats.
