We got our wish... Larry Craig has decided to stick around a little longer. More from Driftglass (who made the GOP men's room sign above...love the machine gun, Drifty honey), Winds of Change, and Idahofallz.

9/11 was an assault on reason itself.
Was that the sign on the restroom door?
Like the sign. Just add a dollar sign and a bomb and I think that would just about do it.
No BillO tonight?
Well shit! I'm outta here then.
Somewhat off topic, but here's one more reason why we Liberals really should hope that Hollywood Fred gets the nomination:

BFD! - with the way the house Dems have been voting - what difference will this make?
In the late afternoon, PST, I spotted a headline in Yahoo news that read something like this, "U.S. - Sunni alliance near collapse in Anbar."
When I clicked on the link, it went to an unrelated news story. A few hours later, I checked WaPo, NY Times, Knight-Ridder and MSN.com and could not find such a headline, as well as at Yahoo.
Was this story pulled? I wonder. It would certainly be damaging to the Bush Administration, as "Bottom up" politics and "Anbar is a success" are linchpins of their argument that the escalation (their word is surge) is showing signs of success.
Did anyone else see this or know anything about it?
Here's an open thread for you...

I am not sure i like this symbol at the top of the page. There is something about it that paints every member of the GOP as being a gun nut Christian Super Patriot with his penis in an anus. I do not quite get what the two on the left are up to but it looks wierd.
Once we create a stereotype of someone we dehumanize both them and ourselves. I strongly disagree with the Republicans but i am not into demonizing them.

Hey, can Anyone suggest any sites that are like C&L that have the same facts with less posts like this one ( GOP bashing for fun ) ?
I love C&L, but I need a site that I can show to my republican dad. He's openminded and might like to expand beyond the T.V. news, but he's not quite ready for all this!
p.s. Good post, though.
Plus, I check this site about 20 times a day, I need some more reading material!
Jon Stewart had a nice skit on the BillO' debacle about Sylvia's restaurant. Good stuff. C&L will probably have it up in the morning.
It's actually an assault rifle, technically not a machine gun.

If I were you I'd probably go to sites that regularly monitor comments like C&L. I like Huffingtonpost but got tired of all the "trolls" that regularly pick fights with people. Maybe "The Moderate Voice" would be a good one for your dad but I would check it out first. Just try the other blog sites listed on C&L out. If the people who comment are reasonably friendly with each other, not too fussy about rules (like staying on topic) too much, like to joke around, hey, could be a place you would like to play for a little while...
Good luck with your dad's changing political views---

You can't blame the Iraqi's for killing them when they get the chance. Hell if I were an Iraqi and had these idiots going around indiscriminately killing innocent civilians I would figure that the first priority would to get rid of them before they kill anyone else. IF the government can't get rid of them, maybe the citizens will and I would have to say they deserve all they get too. Now that I know what they have been doing (have known in the past but no idea how bad it was) I think the Iraqi's were justified for hanging some of these evil bastards from a bridge.

EJG @ 41: "I think the Iraqi's were justified for hanging some of these evil bastards from a bridge."
No, you are 180 degrees WRONG on that, EJG.
You apparently don't understand that honorable US soldiers are involved.
The Fallujah Four were NOT mercenaries. They had killed NO ONE. One of them, Scott Helvensten, was in fact a hero.
The primary reason they were sent to Fallujah is arguably to hang them out to drybecause youngest Navy Seal in history Kevin Halverston tried to whistleblow to Blackwater executives about the multiple crimes he had observed by BW forces, even though Halverston had only been in country for a few hours.
Why was Helvensten working for Blackwater? He took a six week gig with BW because he had a new child to pay for, and needed the money. His contracted task? Guarding Paul Bremer.
He never even saw Bremer. And that bastard Bush used his decapitation by Fallujah gangs to destroy 70% of Fallujah's housing.
BW failed to supply maps, GPS, or third man gunners for either of the Fallujah Four's ill-fated, under-armed jaunt to Fallujah to pick up kitchen equipment as ordered by BW.
Helvensten was BETRAYED, because he whistleblew.
And I hope that understanding this knocks all that CRAP about the justifiability of whacking US personnel out of your head.

Sorry, I messed up Scott Helvenston's name a few times.

(reading that article, I realize that my recollection was faulty on the crimes that Helvenston whistleblew on. The article makes it seem like he was simply complaining about a superior who had it out for him. But in material I think from Democracy Now!'s coverage, I do recall the suggestion of in-country allegations of criminal acts observed by SH, though I find no reference to such in the wikipedia article).

I think the real problem is Hollywood Fred is trying to pretend he's not one of the current crop of stuttering dumkoffs in Congress or the White House. He could ordinarily do this by repudiating virtually everything his party has done in the last 5 years. However, he thinks doing so would enrage the stuttering dumkoff base since Republicans have basically been running their program all this time. So he's playing dumb to avoid being caught supporting the Stuttering Dumkoff position, and also avoid having any reprintable ink of himself repudiating the Stuttering Dumkoff position.
In other words, he's a complete goddamn liar talking out of both sides of his mouth.

Why Did Israel Attack Syria?
By JONATHAN COOK
Israel's air strike on northern Syria earlier this month should be understood in the context of events unfolding since its assault last summer on neighboring Lebanon.
From the leaks so far, it seems that more than half a dozen Israeli warplanes violated Syrian airspace to drop munitions on a site close to the border with Turkey. We also know from the US media that the raid occurred in close coordination with the White House. But what was the purpose and significance of the attack?
It is worth recalling that, in the wake of Israel's month-long war against Lebanon a year ago, a prominent American neoconservative, Meyrav Wurmser, wife of Vice-President Dick Cheney's recently departed Middle East adviser, explained that the war had dragged on because the White House delayed in imposing a ceasefire. The neocons, she said, wanted to give Israel the time and space to expand the attack to Damascus.
The reasoning was simple: before an attack on Iran could be countenanced, Hizbullah in Lebanon had to be destroyed and Syria at the very least cowed. The plan was to isolate Tehran on these two other hostile fronts before going in for the kill.
http://www.counterpunch.com/cook09272007.html
In this TPMV Video of the debate, they cover the issue of the recent resolution against Iran. Hillary smiles when asked why she voted for it. She repeats the Bush line about Iran being a big terrorism threat and arming Hezbollah. She essentially argues that we have to go after Iran, to protect Israel.
She mentions that in Syria, Israel and the US have acted on things that they think that they know. She says a North Korean tanker unloaded stuff in Syria. So Israel had to bomb them just in case, what they think they thought that they might know, turned out to be true.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAWpFrZRjuw
Hillary is pretty safe in being anti-Iraq war but pro-Iran war. If we're deep in an Iranian offensive, when and if she becomes President, there will be no choice but to stay in Iraq. From a neocon perspective anyway. So if she can get a war started with Iran, the embarrassing Iraq questions will end.
Robert Fisk: Bomb kills deputy and threatens to topple Lebanese government
Antoine Ghanem was an easy target. Few bodyguards, no one would think that a member of parliament who represented the Armenians of Lebanon was a target. The little street in which he lived – tall tower blocks, boutiques, flower shops, was not a place where you would try to kill an enemy of Syria – if he was an enemy of Syria – but Antoine was blasted to pieces in his car as he left his home yesterday evening.
And that means there is one left in the government to make up the numbers. In other words, it only takes one more murder for the democratically elected government of Lebanon to fall.
Only a few weeks ago, Walid Jumblatt called me after Ghanem's predecessor was murdered. "Two more to go, Robert," Walid said. And so, tonight, it is one.

INTERVIEW WITH INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALIST SEYMOUR HERSH
'The President Has Accepted Ethnic Cleansing'
Investigative journalist Seymour Hersh has consistently led the way in telling the story of what's really going on in Iraq and Iran. SPIEGEL ONLINE spoke to him about America's Hitler, Bush's Vietnam, and how the US press failed the First Amendment.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was just in New York (more...) for the United Nations General Assembly. Once again, he said that he is only interested in civilian nuclear power instead of atomic weapons. How much does the West really know about the nuclear program in Iran?
Seymour Hersh: A lot. And it's been underestimated how much the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) knows. If you follow what (IAEA head Mohamed) ElBaradei (more...) and the various reports have been saying, the Iranians have claimed to be enriching uranium to higher than a 4 percent purity, which is the amount you need to run a peaceful nuclear reactor. But the IAEA's best guess is that they are at 3.67 percent or something. The Iranians are not even doing what they claim to be doing. The IAEA has been saying all along that they've been making progress but basically, Iran is nowhere. Of course the US and Israel are going to say you have to look at the worst case scenario, but there isn't enough evidence to justify a bombing raid.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Is this just another case of exaggerating the danger in preparation for an invasion like we saw in 2002 and 2003 prior to the Iraq War?
Hersh: We have this wonderful capacity in America to Hitlerize people. We had Hitler, and since Hitler we've had about 20 of them. Khrushchev and Mao and of course Stalin, and for a little while Gadhafi was our Hitler. And now we have this guy Ahmadinejad. The reality is, he's not nearly as powerful inside the country as we like to think he is. The Revolutionary Guards have direct control over the missile program and if there is a weapons program, they would be the ones running it. Not Ahmadinejad.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Where does this feeling of urgency that the US has with Iran come from?
Hersh: Pressure from the White House. That's just their game. (continues)

SPIEGEL INTERVIEW WITH MOHAMED ELBARADEI
'We Are Moving Rapidly Towards an Abyss'
United Nations chief weapons inspector Mohamed ElBaradei spoke to SPIEGEL about Iran's last chance to convince the world of the peaceful nature of its nuclear program, his problems with the US government and his fear of nuclear weapons falling into the hands of terrorists.
SPIEGEL: Mr. ElBaradei, the international community suspects that Iran aims to build nuclear weapons. Tehran denies this. Have we now reached the decisive phase in which we will finally get an answer to this central question of world politics?
Mohamed ElBaradei: Yes. The next few months will be crucial for the overall situation in the Middle East. Whether we move in the direction of escalation or in the direction of a peaceful solution.
SPIEGEL: You have been given a central role. The new report on Iran by your International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) could lead to more severe sanctions against Tehran.
ElBaradei: The international community will have to make that decision. We can only deliver the facts and our assessment of the situation. There are hopeful and positive signs. For the first time, we have agreed, with the Iranians, to a sort of roadmap, a schedule, if you will, for clarifying the outstanding issues. We should know by November, or December at the latest, whether the Iranians will keep their promises. If they don't, Tehran will have missed a great opportunity -- possibly the last one.
SPIEGEL: The US government has described Iran's new willingness to cooperate as a transparent attempt to distract from its true intentions and from its continued development of the capabilities to produce a nuclear weapon. Is the IAEA too gullible?
ElBaradei: I am familiar with these accusations. They are completely untrue. It's not possible to manipulate us. We are not naïve and we do not take sides. Our new Iran report also shows that the Iranian government is not adhering to the requirements set forth by the UN, which demanded an immediate stop to uranium enrichment.
SPIEGEL: It is a proven fact that Tehran has spent years trying to keep the international community in the dark over important aspects of its nuclear program.
ElBaradei: That's right.
SPIEGEL: Your deputy, Olli Heinonen, who negotiated with the Iranians, is now talking about a breakthrough, a "milestone." Given Iran's history, wouldn't a healthy dose of suspicion be appropriate?
ElBaradei: Obviously we are all pushing for the same strategic goal: That Iran should not get nuclear weapons. We consistently searched for evidence that Iran intends to build nuclear weapons. We found suspicious signs, but no smoking gun. We could now make some progress in setting aside these suspicions by thoroughly inspecting the Iranian facilities and learning details about their history. (continues)

THE WAR BIENNIAL
Politics Meets Business at World's Largest Arms Fair
By Ullrich Fichtner
Need some surface-to-surface missiles? In the market for grenade launchers or plastic explosives? Manufacturers and customers meet every two years in London for the world's largest arms fair. In the age of terror, business is booming in the secretive sector.
...
Bottles of Veuve Cliquot champagne sit on ice in the West Quay Bar and the VIP Café. There are plenty of reasons for weapons manufacturers to be celebrating. The industry is booming, not just because of the war on terror, but also because the world is feeling insecure because of the myriad dangers that mark the beginning of the 21st century. The arms industry is a billion-dollar market, and "the key parameters are right," writes Jane's Defence Weekly, the leading industry publication. The business is doing well, or at least it isn't doing badly, despite cost pressures, budget cuts and increased competition from Asia.
...
Men walk around in suits and ties -- exhibitors, middlemen, delegates -- smoking and making telephone calls in all of the world's languages, sending emails with their Blackberrys and discussing "solutions," "responses" and "systems." They're really talking about guns, radar equipment and stealth bombers.
This is what goes on for a full four days at this weapons fair. On Friday, the last day of the show, when the aisles empty early, the dealers at the booths fill large glasses with white wine and drink to a hard week. They've had to talk about many issues but, oddly enough, war and peace were not among them. It was all just about solutions, responses and systems.

It's not homophobic. It's highlighting the hypocritical rightwing.

That's right. ALL LIBERALS are now personally responsible for the content of that sign. I feel challenged that I should repudiate it. I'll be back in a few weeks. I have to go contact all the liberals in the United States and get them on this right away.
Thanks for pointing this out, dumbass!
The accompanying graphic is brilliant. And provides Americans with yet another idea of separate bathrooms for the GOP. Love it.
Maybe a Hooker and a $ sign would have made it just right.

HELLO -- ONE OF THE TRANSITION SITES I MOST ENJOY IS : BARTCOP // OUT OF TULSA. A REAL WIT, AND A THINKER. PEER COMMENTS ALSO POSTED, NOT NEAR THE VOLUM OF C & L . I HOPE YOU'LL LOOK HIM UP.
Craig Is Back, Alright!
Mark Foley: This is the second time the plane has been delayed!
Larry Craig: It ain’t my fault!
David Vitter: We’re never gonna make the next flight!
Larry Craig: Look, the plane broke down, they’ll get it fixed, I’ll be right back. I gotta go to the bathroom.
Ted Haggard: I’ll wait until I am on the plane’s john, then I’ll be closer to Jesus. He's my co-pilot.
Everybody,
Rock your potty,
Everybody,
Wide stance to the right
Craig is back, alright
[Continued...]
Oh, a cop, don’t be recordin’,
Got you a package for pre-boardin’,
I’m gonna be the pimp from Idaho,
Playing footsie wedged between your toes,
For a good time, call,
I’m a Republican,
Want to boost your polls?
Assume a full, upright position,
You’d better rock my potty, now
Everybody,
Rock your potty,
Everybody,
Wide stance to the right
Craig is back, alright
Alright
Caress your feet against his Nike Airs,
Tap them down like you just don’t care,
If you like my potty and you want to share,
There are no more flights out of there
For a good time, call,
I’m a Republican,
Want to boost your polls?
Assume a full, upright position,
You’d better rock my potty, now
Everybody,
Rock your potty,
Everybody,
Wide stance to the right
Craig is back, alright
Alright
So everybody in a bathroom stand,
Don’t come here to wash your hands,
All I did was look under his stall,
The cops claim that I broke the law,
But I ain’t gonna resign
Everybody,
Rock your potty,
Everybody,
Wide stance to the right
Craig is back
Everybody,
Rock your potty,
Everybody,
Wide stance to the right
Craig is back, alright
Larry Craig: I gotta get outta here!
Police: Let's go!
Larry Craig: [Screams]
Wide stance Larry...The gift that keeps on giving.
The other day to prove how "straight" he is he voted against the
hate crime legislation along with "ahem" Lindsey Graham.
One day Larry is going to be toe tapping with the wrong person in the
next stall and might literally get the shit kicked out of his sorry ass.
slippytoad @ 100:
talk about missing the point. The poster is questioning what it means to be a liberal. I see a lot of pseudo-progressive stuff on this site.
rmutt @ 92:
How is it homophobic? Is it supposed to be a bathroom sign?
What's wrong with you people? Didn't you hear Larry Craig insist that he is not gay. Surely you don't think a Republican would lie about this do you? Damn skeptical Liberals.
There needs to be dollar signs all over that representation of the sacred values of the GOP sign!
