Killer Law
By Barbara OBrien Sunday Oct 07, 2007 7:20pmLast November, Nicaragua became the third country in the world, after Chile and El Salvador, to criminalize all abortions. There are no exceptions; not for rape, not for incest, not for threats to the life of the mother.
The Nicaraguan abortion law has been praised by Pope Benedict XVI and by U.S. "pro life" organizations. So far, this law has resulted in the deaths of at least 82 women. And that may be the tip of a much bigger iceberg.

Disgusting.....don't women have any rights to vote in that country? How did the law get passed......I hate the Pope...so easy to outlaw abortion when you can never get pregnant.
Hey that's fine. I think all the happy go lucky anti-abortionists from the USA should move to one of those countries. And anyone who wants to leave from there to escape such laws should be allowed to. That way everyone should be happy and I'll never have to hear from those freaks again, ever.
Nicarague, wasn't it run by a progressive gov.t under ronald reagon and the cia threw a coup and help the corporatism overthrown the govt. and than allow a dictator to run the country? anyways, the country is now run by social conservative and corporatist. the poor are getting poorer and the richer are richer while the social conservative are focus on personal morality.
if the social conservative there want to outlaw abortion yet they continue to make the poorer and not provide social service to the poor. the rich can just fly over to another country to get their aboriton while the poor sufer under the ultra right wing.
At least those nasty Sandinistas aren't in power. Those crooks had the strongest economy in Latin America. Thank El Jefe that Ronny organized those death squads with the moolah from the Mullahs!
Well, they won't do that again.
The Macho Culture south of the U.S. Border and into South America is very extreme.
Not everyone suffers from the dis-ease but a lot do.
Yeaaaaa! Pro-Life (embryonic only need apply).
The Macho culture in South America is very very extreme.
Servers screwing up.
*sarcasm alert*
but really, what are the deaths of 82 women when you're saving unborn babies?
*sarcasm alert*
Nicaragua, Chile, and El Salvador. Those are all Muslem states aren't they? Hindu? Oh, they are Catholic! Now I understand.
The name changes but it is always some F**KED up religion that is causing death.
[Deleted-Sitemonitor]
Ectopic pregnancies have no chance of ending in a live birth. Eventually the growing fetus will cause an internal rupture in the mother, leading to bleeding, shock, and death. The developing cells must be removed to save the mother’s life.
What agony this woman must have been in. How can these freaks call themselves pro life? She died in agony. How do these people live with themselves. I can only hope that what goes around comes around. An etopic pregnancy can happen to anyone. The pope can go fuck himself. Hypocrite mother f**king asshole. Pro life my ass.
aaaaaaahhhhhh... the good old days of clothes hangers! many women, including some in my own family, had their uterus damaged that way, and are still suffering today, in their 70s and 80s, as a result. but hey - all in the name of patriarchy and religion, right?!
Isn't Danial Ortega the President there now?
Although Nicaragua has no official religion it is nominally Roman Catholic. Practicing Roman Catholics are no longer the majority and are declining while evangelical Protestant groups and Mormons are growing rapidly.

Captain Kangaroo @ 16:
Yes
Never met my Mom's mother....clothes hanger, self inflicted AB attempt after five children. Death certificate said "kidney poisoning." Infection killed her. Damaged my Mom for life, who was 12 at the time.
Fascists governments want their populations poor, uneducated and unhealthy, willing to work for any wages under unimaginable conditions. One way to keep people poor is to have too many children to support.
Without family planning that includes abortion, the poor have no way out of poverty. Add to that the death sentence of pregnancies gone wrong and you have human suffering most of us can only imagine.
Of course, as in all fascist societies, good party members and the rich can travel to other countries.
Abortion is evil - until your daughter needs one.
This story is so disturbing, I can't even breathe. When are these kooks going to
understand that killing the mother AND/OR the invading killer fetus is not pro-life?
What, two for the price of one equals a pro-life, anti-abortion winner? God, help them, they
know not what they speak.
Jo @ 20:
Granada remains Nicaragua's third largest city, it is widely known for preserving some the finest colonial-era architecture in the country. A real estate boom is underway, with many European and Americans are purchasing and renovating the area's homes for retirement or holiday homes. Several foreign realtors have been established.
Tonight's top story, 82 women have died as a result of a pro-life agenda. The irony was lost on lawmakers and politicians. Back to you, Bob.
Che's Lounge @ 21:
Or your girlfriend.
The religious right and all the neocons must be frothing at the mouth now..........their all against this...until their daughter needs one...then it's hush hush.
Janet @ 14:
Ectopic pregenancy. That's what my wife had. Before the successful birth of our second child.
So these repulsive pieces of human filth would have deprived me of the joy of my daughter's life in order to satisfy some fucking miniscule point of theirs?
These are the kind of people I'd like to hold down while I shit in their faces.
L.A. Confidential @ 23:
And the poor will end up as servants and workers for these homes. If there is a revolution, highly unlikely to be sure in an age of Blackwater, these new homeowners may be forced to flee. I hop they sleep well at night.
GAP Visits Nicaragua
GAP recently visited Nicaragua to finish negotiation of production contracts with companies established in the country. AVONDALE MILLS CEO accompanied them, with the purpose of exploring the possibility of establishing a textile factory with an investment of more than US $ 40 million.
DELL Corp
ProNicaragua was part of the official delegation, which accompanied president Enrique Bolaños on his trip to Houston for a historic meeting with Mr. Michael Dell, founder and president of Dell Corp. In this meeting they talked about the possibility of installing a Dell Call Center in 2005.
Don't Buy
Jo @ 28:
I suspect when "tax hike" Hillary gets in the Republicans will flee - ex-pat the U.S. so fast there probably won't be any left.
Isn't the pope gay?
>>> Thank El Jefe that Ronny organized those death squads with the moolah from the Mullahs!
And a bag of Coors money, too. Think about that next time you tip one up.
L.A. Confidential @ 29:
Absolutely not. Thanks for the info.
Wait, when they say that those are the only three countries in the world to criminalize all abortions, were they counting Afghanistan of the Taliban as well? Please tell me they weren't. I don't want to think that any country would even consider approaching the Taliban in misogyny levels.
I've only met a few people in my life that would outlaw ALL abortion.
They are lethally ignorant.
God damn these folks, and I mean it literally. I'm a med student working with an Ob/Gyn doctor and ectopic pregnancies have a high mortality rate and zero chance for survival. Either you remove the embryo from the ovaries or both the woman and the embryo die.
We need to call these people for what they are - savage, ignorant brutes. By the way, the mortality rate for pyelonephritis is 50-75%, and that's with treatment.
Do any of these nincompoops have ever heard of the words "eclampsia"?
My wife is from El Salvador and it sucks for women over there. Religious fervor and the mob will trump sanity and reason every single time.
L.A. Confidential @ 30:
I sincerely doubt if Hillary will raise taxes on her corporate doners.
Tony Snow @ 34:
From the Guardian article: "Women who become pregnant after being raped, or whose lives are endangered by their pregnancy, are banned from having abortions in just three countries around the world: Nicaragua, Chile and El Salvador." All from the "new" world.
This Pope Benedict sounds like he fits right in with Justus Roberts et al.
Birth Control is the smartest thing we can all support.
I hate to think of mothers, children, fathers or anyone suffering because of unwanted pregnancies.
Damn these mean people who use the law to screw other people over.
Yup, that's religion for ya.
Protect the fetus, screw the mother (and the child after it's been born).
Always pushing some ignorant multi millenia old dogma as reasonable in the face of all evidence to the contrary.
Yup, that's religion for ya.
Ain't it grand?
crazylikeafox @ 31:
I don't know about that...but ...he was in the Hitler youth.
There's nothing "prolife" about this.
the worst part is that countries that ban abortion often make it impossible to obtain birth control as well-not to mention the men who won't allow "their" women to use it.
We have creeping fascism in the world with the US being the biggest supporter. Who will stand up and stop us? Even the biggest Communist states in the world are no more. While they were evil in their own way, at least they were staunchly anti-fascist.
Women must take over their own lives and stand up to this crap. All repressive governments and religions on this earth need to be challenged by the women everywhere for their criminal responsibility for the death of women. Men force pregnancy on women and women do nothing? Long past time for this to end.
enough @ 46:
It's not that women are not "willing" to stand up against this crap. I have been to Latin America many, many times and poverty, no schooling and 2-3 kids will not only knock out any idealism out of you, but will leave anyone without the tools to organize and protest. Also, we are missing two things here. First the obvious, there is plenty of right-wing money behind these "pro-life" groups and campaigns. The second issue is that many women believe what the church is telling them because they are devout, and thus are the easy pray of religious hucksters.
It's kinda like saying that woman do not believe in "machismo" because they are women and not men. This is wrong. "Machismo", or the belief that a men can do whatever the fuck he wants, is not limited to men as well. So women have to get over this state of mind as well, which is incredibly difficult because a lot of women (not just in El Salvador or Nicaragua, but in the states as well) are raised with this kind of crap. When a young girl in El Salvador continuously gets told that women should stay home, tidy up the house and raise the kids, and not go to school, she will end up believing it.
By the way, if you want to learn more about maternal/infant health issues in El Salvador, visit the online journal Global Pulse (I'm the editor):

i'm so sorry to hear... sad, how we never hear about the consequences of back-alley and self-administered abortions - the impact is huge.
We appear to be experiencing an epidemic of conservative insanity all over the world.
The obscene idea that their anti-abortion religious belief leads to women dying, women who could have survived and later had babies once their medical emergency passed, makes one really question the sanity of all "pro-life" conservatives. The baby dies. The mother dies. Pro-life??? Or are the so-called conservative "pro-lifers" really just a bunch of death worshippers???
Viva Nicaragua!
I love it !
Now where's my meth?
I hate abortion. I think it is a very bad thing. Much better to force a pregnant 7 year old who was raped by a relative to try to bear the child (as was attempted fairly recently in some South American country or another). Or just kill the raped girl, fetus and all as is commonly done in Muslim countries (unwed pregnancy is proof of adultery - a capital offense) - hard for me to imagine that abortion is a woman's choice in places where women are not even allowed to leave the home unaccompanied by a male relative.
To the best of my knowledge (no man can be 100% sure), I have never caused a woman to become pregnant except once - and that was intended. I do think it is really crucial to prevent unwanted pregnancy and I firmly believe that well over 90% of the abortions performed in could be prevented with real sex education and wide availability of contraception - which the fanatics hate even more than abortion.
One part of my first paragraph that I really stand by is that I do hate abortion. I do believe that every society has a responsibility to prevent the necessity of abortion which we as a society have never even really attempted.
Parental consent laws really infuriate me. The Grandparent-to-be takes on no responsibility for the support or upbringing of the child, but they get to call the shot on how their kid spends the next 18 years.
Since it has been repeatedly proven that the more educated the child, the later they have intercourse - and the less likely they are to get pregnant, it is the mark of a truly backward and primitive society that this is a problem.
So, yeah, I do hate abortion. I don't want to cause one. But it is nobody's damned business to stop one when it becomes necessary and it is not my job to decide when that is.
If it ain't beautiful blue eyed blonde haired whities being aborted, the American conservatives will turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to this.
Note: I'm white
Sick sick sick sick.
"Culture of life" my ass.
But of course, to todays conservatives, women don't count as people to begin with. They're just sex objects and baby machines. Something to look pretty and help add more people to the species.
No surprise. "Pro-life" politics are good fodder for politicians everywhere religion matters in politics.
Hey, what do they risk? If they loose, they get a dedicated and vocal religious minority to support them blindly while they strut around, shrouded in their cheap, phony moral righteousness. If they win and get to enact those policies, they are not the ones suffering from them. The victims are the weakest of the weak, silent as they die. If those criminal laws are finally repealed, their opponents had to expend a lot of efforts to serve the common good while gaining very little politically for themselves.
Banning abortion kills, unequivocally, without a shred of a doubt.
Like racism or antisemitism, "pro-life" ideas are ideas that kill.
But "pro-life" politics won't go away. They are too cheap and easy to use. They won't go away until those who use them get to pay a steep price for using them, until it hurts them in their wealth and their freedom.
How can a just, crushing price be exacted from those "pro-life" criminals?
All of this is important, but unless the citizens get focused on one thing only...impeaching Bush and Cheney for war crimes and crimes to humanity, they will go through with the New World Order's plan of exterminating 80% of humanity.
After we get them out and Ron Paul in we can go back to all the fires that the neocon madness has brought to the planet.
It is obvious now that some brave Air Force personnel stopped WWIII by reporting the B-25 with the nukes aboard. Possibly they were inspired by the Kennebunkport Warning http://mujca.com/kennebunkport.htm by ExCongresswoman Cinthia McKinney and others.
We've got to stop Bush and Cheney or we are dead as a nation, a culture, and as people. Our infrastructure is bad, we have lost most all our manufacturing, the gold is gone from Fort Knox, our highways (paid by our taxes) our being sold to foreigners to become toll roads.
Pro-Life? Give me a break, these people have no clue what they are talking about. When you can let the mother die for a fetus something is terribly wrong. So they want to make abortion illegal everywhere. What are they going to do to the person who performs an illegal abortion? What are they going to do to the woman that had the abortion?
If abortion is taking of a human life as the pro-life side says, then I argue that if the woman seeks an abortion you are committing pre-meditated murder and she should be charged as such. The person who performs the abortion should be charged with premeditated murder as they have all intentions of carrying out the abortion once the woman shows up.
So now we are charging these people, putting them on trial, judge them to be guilty of murder, then we send them to the death chamber. Oh my God, we the people, are as guilty as they for taking a human life.
So if the pro-life claims that they have the answer by making it illegal, I would venture a guess not one of them has looked past the illegal point and carried it all the way to its logical conclusion.
Abortion should be decided between the woman and her doctor, to heck with anyone else/
Couldn't they put an end to abortions by somehow making it so males can't engage in the reproductive act? Some sort of chastity belt for men that doesn't come off until after they have gotten married? And after they are married, the wife gets to keep the key to that chastity belt, with penalties for any man found to be out and about not wearing one.
The anti-abortion crap is about hurting and subjugating women, not protecting life.
Anybody see the movie Vera Drake?
It is a British film.
Very telling.
Isaac @ 25:
Or Ann Coulter
How sad. According to a 2006 poll, 49% of Nicaragua citizens wanted abortion to be legal for some purposes. However, you've got Catholic bishops in the country that liken life-saving abortions to "terrorist" bombings.
Fifi @ 55:
Simpler than you think.
By living better. By working together to show that humanity does not have to be at each other's throats all the time.
These are the people who like the working and middle classes to be against each other, the people who benefit the most from strife and lack of union among societies weak. The use people with limited education to further their agenda - education that these folks often helped limit - because they know it'll so disorder and prevent any sort of unity.
The best punishment for this sort of sociopathic tyranny, is to prove there's a better way.
Because at the end, what's a worse punishment than watching your neighbors, your friends, maybe even your family, all together, and you're sitting there fuming on the sidelines, ignored and forgotten.
Smack_dab @ 58:
Without doubt.
After all, how can they claim they want to protect life when, the instant that child leaves the womb, they're unwilling to provide it with food, health care, or a peaceful world?
Only reported !
And what we don't know ?
crazylikeafox @ 31:
He sure looks it. He's also a former Nazi isn't he. Or maybe not so former.

EJ @ 12:
I remember learning in school about an INQUISITION, which, if I'm not mistaken, involved much church-mandated cruelty. this is apparently in the same tradition. didn't that same church endorse boosh?
Dave @ 66:
so she obviously wasn't referring to herself when she said women should not be allowed to vote!
Even with the best medical care, pregnancy can be life-threatening to the mother. My sister almost died giving birth, and the baby died after only a few hours. The chromosomal abnormality meant the baby had no chance at life. The test that would have detected this was not performed, due to lack of medical insurance coverage. If things are this screwed up in America, I shudder to think what Nicaraguan women suffer.
Women and children first -- to the GRAVE!
crazylikeafox @ 31:
Nah; He is unhappy most of the time. :-)
Smack_dab @ 45:
I have a feeling that a China Russia Korea coup could be in the making.
They wouldn't even have to invade, they could just write up a bill for what we owe them & repossess the country,...
JohnnyThief @ 72:
Not to mention that you're talking over 2 billion people to our 300 million,... add the Middle East supporting them & you'd have over half the planet vs. us,...
What's strange is that their mantra is "the sanctity of life": but the great majority of them are FOR death penalty and PRO-WAR.
Go figure.
A draconian anti-abortion law that is praised by both the Pope and the Bush administration.. (see, that's a problem right there if if the Bushco faithful are praising it)... A law perportedly 'pro-life'... that has thus far led to over eighty womens death... I'm going to go out on a limb here and figure these women either aborted a pregnancy for personal reasons or were intending to...
So what am I missing here????? This all seems a little counter-intuitive to me... I mean, what the hell is sooo 'pro-life' about this situation??? And, what's the popes opinion on those eighty plus dead women???? THAT don't sound so frikin pro life to me....JD
Please go back to your bread and circuses. Move along. Nothing to see here. Otherwise you might think that you're actually more than just sheep to be breed as the aristocracy feels they have the right too.
Last time humans had this little self-determination there was a special word for it: SLAVERY.
Then Men should be casterated too, so they can't rape and get innocent woman, including their female relatives, pregnant that don't want a baby from any sick bastard.
BaScOmBe @ 68:
Oh no, that was the old testament stuff, today we have compassionate conservatives that kill abortion doctors to honor life.
JohnnyThief @ 73:
Unlikely. Most of the current anti-Americanism derives from our Cold War-era policies. The governments of both the USA and the USSR believed that it was necessary to tamper with the political processes of third-world countries, installing brutal partisan dictatorships and prolonging bloody civil wars that naturally caused a large amount of anti-American anti-Russian sentiment throughout most of the world. Nowadays anti-Russian sentiment is subsiding since it hasn't invaded any country since it was de-Sovietized. I suspect that once Cold War-era thought patterns in America disappear our government will start hesitating to negatively interfere with other countries' development, allowing countries in the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas to determine their own destinies without the constant threat of American gunboat diplomacy. If and when that happens, I think that we will see a gradual shift if not to actual pro-Americanism but at least a reduction in reflexive hatred.
If you don't like abortions, don't get one.
My first reaction after reading this was the sudden urge to pick up my monitor and begin slamming it against the wall. I was raised Catholic, and i still attend mass, but it's after hearing these kinds of things that have helped crumble my faith in these religions, who praise and cherish all life until it's undergone the sin of being born. The rage of helplessness from being a foreigner and hearing about these atrocities makes my body shake; it's almost more than bearable to see people, in your own 'civilized' country, support these barbaric laws against some of the most basic of human rights.
That story hurt me to my soul. Here in Britain, you still need to consent of 2 doctors to get an abortion, and finding 2 doctors can be difficult. There was an article in The Independent about fewer numbers of British doctors that perform or consent to abortions. Across the sea from me, you can't get an abortion in the Republic of Ireland, unless there is a risk to the life of the mother. A girl in foster care was pregnant with a foetus that would be born with no brain and because the baby would live for 72 hours after birth, the government was trying to disallow her to come to Britain for an abortion, even though this child would die at or soon after birth. So it isn't just the macho South Americans, the Taliban or "backwards" Muslim countries that do this. Seemingly cosmopolitan European countries have issues with abortions as well.
I am American, and an aunt of mine nearly bled to death from a backalley abortion. My old granny was the go-to woman for a girl "in trouble." She has performed many safe abortions with a concoction she used to make up. This is sad, sad, sad. More women my age (30) and under need to make sure that we never loose this right. We need to demand that contraception is covered by medical insurance and that all women have adequate pre and post natal care
Yeah, biotch! I'm finally winning! "Those little babies belong to Jesus!" Muaha ha ha ha ha.... And to think you ever doubted the genius of my plans!!!
