1. Tonight is the last night to vote in the Democracy For America Presidential Pulse Poll. This poll is unique in that it allows you to pick your top three candidates.

2. Continue to keep an eye on the 10Questions, which allows all of us to record a question for the candidates of both or either party, and allows the candidates to answer the questions at length without the time limitations of a televised debate.

3. This lil' blog here is up for a Weblog Award for Best Video Blog. As usual The Man Upstairs doesn't want his staff to make a big deal about it. "Keep blogging and keep your eye on the prize and by the prize, I mean, the C&L servers," he says... Everyone here should vote for Kucinich. That’d put a monkey wrench in the manufactured narrative the media’s trying to force upon us. I personally voted for Kucinich first, Gravel second, and wrote in Colbert for third. I really couldn’t stomach any other “choices”.

Reminder to contact your representative if you haven't yet...

Kucinich says he will force House vote on Cheney impeachment

Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) announced he would move to force a vote next week on his resolution calling for the impeachment of Vice President Dick Cheney.

“The momentum is building for impeachment,” Kucinich said in a statement on his Web site. “Millions of citizens across the nation are demanding Congress rein in the Vice President’s abuse of power.

Kucinich said he plans to introduce a privileged resolution, which would have priority for a House floor vote, on Nov. 6. A vote on the measure would be required within two days.

Observers expect a motion to table Kucinich’s resolution, which has 21 Democratic co-sponsors. It is almost certain that such a move to kill the resolution would be successful, but activists are urging members of Congress to support Kucinich’s move.

“We need you to ask your representative to vote No on tabling, Yes on giving impeachment a chance,” wrote David Swanson on the pro-impeachment Website AfterDowningStreet.org. “Those who vote Yes to table cannot use the excuse that ‘We don’t have the votes,’ since others will at that same instant with exactly the same exertion be voting No. Please scroll down to contact Congress and the media right away!”

Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has long said that impeachment was “off the table” and Kucinich has had little success spurring legislative action on his resolutions, despite the growing number of lawmakers who have signed on as co-sponsors since it was introduced this spring.

Kucinich’s full statement is reprinted below:

Kucinich Will Introduce Privileged Resolution To Force Up Or Down Vote On Cheney Impeachment

WASHINGTON, D.C. (November 2, 2007) — Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) announced today that he will be offering a privileged resolution on the House floor next week that will bring articles of impeachment against the Vice President, Richard B. Cheney.

“The momentum is building for impeachment,” Kucinich said. “Millions of citizens across the nation are demanding Congress rein in the Vice President’s abuse of power.

“Despite this groundswell of opposition to the unconstitutional conduct of office, Vice President Cheney continues to violate the U.S. Constitution by insisting the power of the executive branch is supreme.

“Congress must hold the Vice President accountable. The American people need to let Members of Congress know how they feel about this. The Vice President continues to use his office to advocate for a continued occupation of Iraq and prod our nation into a belligerent stance against Iran. If the Vice President is successful, his actions will ensure decades of disastrous consequences.”

The privileged resolution has priority status for consideration on the House floor. Once introduced, the resolution has to be brought to the floor within two legislative days, although the House could act on it immediately. Kucinich is expected to bring it to the House floor on Tuesday, November 6.

H. Res. 333, Articles of Impeachment against the Vice President, has 21 cosponsors. They are: Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Robert Brady (D-PA), Yvette Clarke (D-NY), Rep. William Lacy Clay (D-MO), Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN), Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), Rep. Sam Farr (D-CA), Rep. Bob Filner (D-CA), Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-TX), Rep. Henry Johnson (D-GA), Rep. Carolyn Kilpatrick (D-MI), Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA), Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA), Rep. James Moran (D-VA), Rep. Donald Payne (D-NJ), Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Rep. Edolphus Towns (D-NY), Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), Rep. Diane Watson (D-CA), Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-CA) and Rep. Albert Wynn (D-MD).

Speaking of Daylight Savings Time, I should set up a page to take bets to see if the DST change implemented this year will depress voter turnout next year, being that since it is now falling on the first Sunday in November, which will generally always, (with the exception/s being when November 1st itself is either on a Monday or Tuesday), precede Election Day, which is always on the first Tuesday of November.

The last Presidential election hinged on about 150,000 votes, and if that many people miss voting next year because they weren't planning on how rapidly it got dark out a year from this coming Tuesday, the election could turn on those votes too.

HotAir is at 47%, C&L 25%. WTF! Me hopes the votes don't accurately reflect the population. Otherwise we are doomed!

I LOVE that Kuchinich and Gore have the lead.

Oops.. Kucinich.

And call your Representatives to co-sponsor or support the Kucinich H. Res. 333 on Tuesday November 6th! Tell them to vote NO on tabling the resolution.

I'm surprised that people view Al Gore as more "progressive" than the rest. How quickly we forget his time in the Senate. People, honestly, he missed the deadline to file in New Hampshire, and is far better off doing exactly what he is doing now -- much more effective. I think he should take his old dreams of the presidency and put them in a "lockbox".

I voted Edwards, Dodd, Obama. Actually, I think that is in order or "progressiveness" as well (Edwards as the most of that set).

And I'm very surprised at the lack of supporting Dodd for his willingness to step up the the plate and promise to filibuster anymore abuse of our constitution. Maybe he is running for vice, but he has really surprised me with his integrity in the last few weeks. Like Edwards he seems to understand that CORRUPTION first and foremost are the two direct threats to us right now. Corruption in politics, and in financial markets. Edwards and Dodd are the ONLY two candidates of either party that choose to show these as the priorities they are. If the economy collapses and the political system gets any more rigged, nobody is going to give a damn about fixing social security ahead of time because we'll all be out of jobs.

The "new, fresh out of the box" shine has worn off of Obama. A great orator, he REALLY should have waited... gone for a governorship or something. He is too malleable and tied to business interests. We already had a "uniter, not a divider". Didn't really work out too well, sorry. There is a long shot that he'd actually get lucky after being elected and be able to work with congress, but I kind of doubt it. Too fresh, not enough power. He'll probably be blind-sided by the first scandal in his staff, the discussion will turn to race, and there we'll be for the next 4 years, arguing.

And Kucinich... dream on you crazy kids. Why not just write in George Carlin? And say hello to president Gulianni.

Hillary? Whatever. Fights way too dirty, in the wrong party, etc. Too many negatives to list.

I just want to put my 2 cents in about the Mukasey appointment. The excuse, and that's just what it is, that Feinstein is afraid of a recess appointment is bullshit. The asshole in chief already said it would be Mukasey or nobody. So let him do a recess appointment. At least the record would show that the dems stood up for fucking something dammit. Ok I'm going to bed now.

You had it right the 1st time xoites.
Funny thing happened....on the way to Gov. Dean's Fairfax Va. rally to kick off his Summer Tour when he was running.
I had stopped by to check out the anniversary of MLK's "I have a Dream Speech" at the Lincoln Memorial. (very disappointing turnout for that). There were 3 Laroucheites trying to hand out lit. I politely refused the handout offered by the smiling young man and then as quick as you can Mr. Hyde started screaming expletives accompanied by bulging eyes, jumping up and down and I swear to God spittle flying everywhere. This was right on the Memorial steps! The good news was, later I found a street vendor who sold me a "Redeem the Dream" shirt for $ 3.00 ! And then it was off to the rally which was packed.

I still find it amusing that the righty blogs all fear having open comment sections.... very amusing.

i was driving to a client tonite (yes, i have to work 6 days a week to make ends meet) and i overheard some wingnut talk hosts talking about a recent poll that said over 50 percent of americans feel more stressed now than 5 years ago, mostly due to the housing market and health care costs.

these guys had the gaul to poll the people in their studio, and all but one said "well i feel better now than i did 5 years ago"

they took the whole poll as a joke

Exchange all your savings for Euros, Sterling or Gold and hold on to your hat, it's going to get bouncy.

The weak dollar is dragging down many Asian currencies.

The differences are wide and clear between the Republicans and Democrats. When it comes to taxes, health care, or the war in Iraq are a few examples of a larger list. But, the one single issue that I learned about first on the Internet was torture, and the use of mercenaries, called Black water subcontracting military operations.

Torture news items on the Internet are discussed well before the torture issue was discussed as it is on Major Media. I always said to myself, no this can not be, especially secret prisons used in different parts of the world. What is striking to me and totally sad to extremely embarrassing as an American is that we are debating about torture and how much of it we can use. If water boarding is not torture, sorry hope is lost for America. If any one missed the televised illustration of how water boarding is applied, you need to see it. It is horrible. It does not represent me.

I don’t know how many Americans analyze the politics of each individual candidate but I listen to each, Republican and Democrat despite what is said on Mainstream Media. American contemporary Mainstream Media Journalist are complicit with the Bush administration that are currently corrupt and covering up by classifying as secret anything and everything that leads a trail of denial, deceit, fraud, profiteering, crimes against the Constitution, violation of the Geneva Convention and a morally bankrupt policy with aliens and health care.

Simply it’s sad to charm Mexicans to America to save a buck for cheap labor then kick them in the ass and shove them out of the system. Worse, to build hatred on national news to condemn them and actually try to classify some twenty to thirty million alien Mexicans as felons blaming the ideal America didn’t have a wall to stop them from crossing into America when in fact our loving business community openly gave jobs for, home loans, car loans, and just about everything else one needs to live through has been openly given to alien Mexicans for decades. Don’t forget the ability to be citizens if they volunteer for the war.

Now Lou Dobbs who has been a blow hard talking out of his ass for the past year with bias and idiotic political analysis trying to convince New York Americans that Governor Spitzer is crazy for wanting to issue special drivers license to clamp down on aliens. Sorry, but Lou Dobbs should also consider looking at all the business license, not just driving, and look at the government agencies that have ignored for this issue for decades or, home building industry, insurance, food or agriculture, healthcare, the list is large.

At least Hillary Clinton told the truth in her so called fumbled debate. Hillary said simply “We failed them”. "But, the special drivers license made sense". What strikes me in several ways about support for the drivers license is the way the candidates over lapped into a free for all response, were Hillary line up fast enough, but not for the others hence the ”pile on” clearly a defensive foul that was taken out of context and totally went awry because the referees, Russert, and Williams let it play out, more over was exploited in Mainstream Media Analysis. Russert and Williams couldn’t cut into a commercial fast enough.

The Media got away with another foul, poor analysis, and actually horrible hosting or moderating of such an inportant topic.

As for me, so far, watched a lot of candidates all across the board. actually Ron Paul is truthfully the best Conservatitive Republican to me. And, when I listened to the whole speech Hillary Clinton gave to the college she went to, Wesley College, her vision and fundementals are light years ahead any Republican candidate. So far I believe Hillary and, with Bill can untangle the mess America is currently in.

The Clintons certainly had a vision as their administration was fundemental in the expansion of the Internet as we all know it today. Many have forgotten this and many bury the fact. But, I know I lived through it and it is forged in history as the most significant change brought to the masses. The Republicans can't stand the ideal of it, a simple Democratic liberal ideal that changes the world for the better.

Imagine how Hillary and Bill Clinton will impliment the Internet to help all Americans participate and develop a new direction. I just have the inspiration that the Clinton's can change the course for the better than an eternal war, and remove the hatred that currently permeates American culture, by Bush and Company.

Feinstein has always been a DINO, and I am ashamed she is my senator. She has always been a shady character to say the least. I don't trust anyone who owes their whole political career to somebody else's assassination.

In fact I would have been really surprised if she had voted against. That is why I find the Dem apologist pathetic to say the least. We have been had, the sad part now are the idiots who are still in denial...

Tequila @ 34:

The weak dollar is dragging down many Asian currencies.

And citi bank stock is becoming worthless by the minute, it will be fun to see it nosedive once the markets open today.

A bunch of banks are also taking dives in England. London is usually the hub of all the dirty inflated money in the world, so once that ripples through then things are going to get interesting.

The Euro countries are tired seeing their currency inflating like a balloon since it hurts their manufacturing base, which is still a fairly important component of their economy (unlike our "let's make everything in China" economy). A lot of countries are starting to get tired of having to eat shit, while the Americans get to have their cake (spend money like they got it) and eat it too (print more money and make fiat out of thin air).

There is bound to be a big shake up, and a lot of it will be due to people over seas, who are as greedy and soulless as our greedy soulless homegrown bastards, running out of patience and having to play second fiddle to a lazy, obnoxious paper tiger.

Before the year ends there should be some interesting economic "bumps" and having the moron at the helm is the worst possible person to have at the worst time.

I think every presidential candidate should be asked:

'What specific things would you DO as president that would be different than and make you a better president than (whoever is currently in first place in the polls?'

If we keep following the thread that 'It's a hour earlier than we think it is', we'll eventually get to experience the Big Bang.

Kucinich is the man.

Is it just me ooes anyone else see any similarities between Bush and Musharraf's recent actions in Pakistan?

Nah, I didn't think so, either.

Either way, you're still voting to confirm a devil.

Recess appointments should be eliminated. The obvious intent was to provide a mechanism to fill a post in an emergency if Congress was not in session, but not once has it been used in that spirit. From Reagan to Bush Jr. it has only been used to circmvent the process.

Indemnification, if adequately negotiated, would protect the telecoms; but this was not done. It appears Rockefeller, in hindsight, wants to do what he and others didn't have the foresight to do. As you read the editorial, consider the following:

- Why wouldn't indemnification work?

- What discussions did Rockefeller engage with the Administration and Congress to "determine" that indemnfication would not work?

- Why wasn't indemnification written into the Patriot act, which the Congress rubber stamped?

- Why, if indemnification was an option -- going forward from 2001, but "rejected" -- why is it now not an option for the telecoms?

- Once indemnified, why would the contractors -- going forward today from 2007 -- be reluctant to support the government in any future eavesdropping?

Government Contractor - Telecom Counsel Negotiations

The following statements are problematic:

"We decided against "substitution" (putting the government in the shoes of the companies) and "indemnification" (making the government cover all costs) because both still mistakenly place the onus on the companies rather than on the government."

No, indeminfication would not, if correctly negotiated, compel any outcome; rather, it would formalize a lawful relationship. The issue isn't whether the Government and telecoms violated the law; but whether legal counsel, when drafting the agreements, were competent.

Legal Arrangement

The following statement is absurd:

"If American business -- airlines, banks, utilities and many others -- were to decide that it would be too risky to comply with legally certified requests, or to insist on verifying every request in court, our intelligence collection could come to a screeching halt."

No, the telecoms, if part of a reasonable arrangement, would continue their cooperation. These legal counsel in the US government, Congress, and telecoms appear to have assumed the arrangement would not be disclosed. Poor legal skills should not be rewarded with retroactive change.

Overall Problems With Editorial

Rockefeller's editorial has a plethora of logic errors. He's making assertions but providing no confidence those assertions warrant belief. For example, he argues that things were thwarted; yet, the Senator cannot explain, despite these "problems" why the Senator wrote a memo expressing his reservations. These reservations were not addressed. He cannot explain why he, as Senator Dodd has mentioned, did not use the "hold" or "filibuster" option.

Rockefeller is making excuses for not holding the telecoms, President, and AG accountable. Even if there were a recess appointment, Congress has the power to impeach the new AG. There is no excuse for Congress to rubber stamp illegal activity. There are options on the table. Congress needs to use them, not make excuses for rolling over.

Posted this down below, but it's worth a repost here (I hope):

Ruthless People @ 192 “I have 2 words to say to this. “Monica Lewinsky”. How much of a majority did the Republicans have when they went after Clinton over something of no national importance.”

You ask, I’ll tell you.

R Majority in both Houses:

228-206 (+1) in the House.

55-45 in the Senate.

(105th Congress)

They had enough to pass impeachment in the House without problem (since their caucus does not have a Dem-voting version of the Blue Dogs).

[Currently it’s 233 - 47 Blue Dogs to 200 R — or to spell it out: 184 solid D to 247 potential R or nay votes. As we are 30 votes shy, according to my Congresswoman Diane Watson, who supports immediate impeachment, and we would need (1/2 of 433) + 1 = 217 votes to pass such a bill, then 217 - 30 = 187 in favor of impeachment, which is nearly all Democrats, with only a couple of Blue Dogs on board.]

The House votes in 1998 were 228-206 and 221-212, straight down party lines (4 R defections/5 Dem defections). Two counts failed.

Senate charges in 1999 were defeated, 45-55 and 50-50 (nearly partyline votes)(67 votes needed).

In other words, enough for impeachment under that sonofabitch Gingrich. Not enough for conviction under Trent Lott.

Impeachment is an utterly unreliable process, and if the R are voting en block (as they are) in support of their criminal gang, then there is no justice to be had through such a process. Even if that gutwrenching fact is hard to take.

Manila Ryce @ 1:

Everyone here should vote for Kucinich. That’d put a monkey wrench in the manufactured narrative the media’s trying to force upon us.

Not much of a wrench, though, since the results of the poll will not resound beyond those already aware of the media's bias/complicity.

Impeachment, were it to be sought, may prove fruitless in terms of removing Bush from office, but it would be enormously beneficial in (1) bringing BushCo's crimes to light, (2) highlighting previously discovered crimes, and (3) documenting the Republican Party's continued support of anti-Constitutional Executive Brancy activities.

Always swinging for the home run isn't the best strategy.

Tonight is the last night to vote in the Democracy For America Presidential Pulse Poll. This poll is unique in that it allows you to pick your top three candidates.

Does anyone know how this DFA poll is being tabulated? Specifically, is it being tabulated via an Instant Run-off mechanism, or are one's 3 votes weighted equally? I've emailed DFA but they haven't responded. (Not a good reflection, IMO.)

Does the U.S. media think American's are that ill informed , about Pakistan , they must . First of all if I hear Pakistan / Mushariff described in every intro as " a valuable ally on the war on terror " I'm going to scream . CNN is advancing this myth that what's happening right now is the "collapse of democracy " , such an absurd statement, it's amazing they have the gall to even say such a thing . Here this little clown takes over Pakistan by way of a military coup and "wins" an election by 90% victory , an obviously rigged election, especially given the reaction of Pakistanis today , of his martial law implementation and the arrests of opposition and government officials . But the real absurdity is CNN calling it the " collapse of democracy" . WHAT democracy . He's a military dictator , that tortures and does probably worst . Words you won't hear on U.S. news are dictator ; torturer ; cruel to his people ; violator of human rights ; not to mention it's Pakistani military that controls a large part of Afghani heroin production and transportation our of the country and A Q Kahn supposedly transfered nuclear technology around the world w/o the knowledge of Pakistani Intelligence , the CIA or anybody else . Now he is sitting in his palatial home under "house arrest" sipping liquor .

What you won't hear is that Mushariff signed an OIL PIPELINE deal with the U.S.'s puppet regime in Afghanistan , JUST WEEKS after taking power . YESSSSS, see the common denominator AGAIN . The OIL pipeline transporting the trillions of dollars of OIL from the CASPIAN will run through ...drum roll....Afghanistan annnnndddddd .PAKISTAN .

Do ya think, do ya think maybe it's why the U.S. military has billion dollar bases in a dirt poor country such as Afghanistan , fighting guys with AK-47s in the back of Toyota pick ups and where do you think the highway being built will be located, in areas that will benefit Afghans or along the route where their oil pipeline will be built ? eh eh ?

Vote between who, Paula Abdul or Simon Cowsill?

The non-sense argument with the AG appointment: "Oh, if we don't confirm, then Bush will have a recess appointment."

Response [rolling eyes]: "Hay, Congress -- if you're not happy with the President's threatened-recess appointment, you can impeach and remove the recess-appointed-AG from office."

Hakim Bey @ 48:

swarmofkillermonkeys @ 24:

Amazing - when simply asked a question as to who you would want as president, you answer with who you think is electable. Edwards is clearly not the 'most progressive' ; in fact, this is ridiculous. Don't you realize this makes you stupid?

No, I answered with the 3 top people for the job, as that is what the linked poll asked for. Perhaps you're having trouble reading. Or clicking. Or maybe... typing.

Of those three, Edwards holds the most progressive positions. You know, traditional progressive ideals like reducing poverty, financial regulation, electoral reform, pro-union, living wages, union support, etc. But I sure you will correct my impression with some intelligent rebuttal, right?

"Don't you realize this makes you stupid?"

Wow. I guess not. Golly, your intellect and supporting evidence is really amazing. Hakim, you should listen to yourself...

I've argued at length on this blog about Kucinich's lack of flexibility and depth on broader issues. He has a two-note campaign, impeachment and eliminate the military. He's right on one and at least half-right on the other. But that doesn't mean he'd make a great president, quite the opposite. The next president must be a VERY skilled diplomat, and capable of complex negotiation, changing strategies, and personal charisma to gain back America's reputation in the world. Dennis simply doesn't have that. He isn't the whole package. Like Carlin, he says some things that are true. Great. But that does not an effective president make (and yes, you idealists, you HAVE to be effective or whatever policies you spout will never be implemented. this really should be obvious.)

He'd be a great cabinet member, but a horrible president. Any ideas of electability or versus Republicans aside. Man, I've had more intelligent conversation with Ron Paulenistas...

But I'm sure you will just ignore logic, and reality, and just go around calling people "stupid" when you don't understand what they are saying. So have fun, kiddie. Maybe you'll mature when you are old enough vote.

If impeachment is not used, direct prosecutions is permitted. Yes, a sitting President can be prosecuted outside Congress, outside impeachment.

There's a flaw with torture: Someone shows up and accuses someone else: "They need to be tortured." Fundamental question: How does the person -- making the accusation -- "know" that the prisoner "is the right person" to torture? "Obviously," the accuser "knows" something. The next question: If the accuser is "so sure" of something, why doesn't the accuser assent to being tortured?

The core problem with torture is that it relies on accusation and assertion -- not evidence -- to impose a punishment. If that's the basis for US action, then the US has lost this "war on terror", and is a terrorist nation. As with Orwell's Animal Farm, the problem is when there is no difference between the Farm Animals and the Farmer. Screaming louder that one is better, but those assertions of superiority are not met by actions, inspires terrorism.

Yes, see this thread, and look for ( Legalize wrote on November 5, 2007 5:20 PM ). Makes same argument. All options need to be asserted.

Once impeachment is attempted, but fails, then this opens the door for a direct prosecution of a sitting President: If impeachment is not used, direct prosecutions is permitted. Congressional action to "not impeach" does not mean there will be no consequences. The President has no power to block State AG's from enforcing the Constitution, or asserting their oath.

The continuing State-level litigation against the US Government in re FISA violations is evidence the State AGs can independently move outside Congress to enforce State's rights: The right to have the Constitution defended, and protected against domestic enemies in Congress and the oval office. Please encourage your friends to contact the State AGs and prosecute this sitting President outside Congress, outside impeachment.

plooger @ 53 "it would be enormously beneficial in (1) bringing BushCo's crimes to light,"

Sure, the complicit media is going to fall all over itself to report their crimes -- even though they haven't yet in seven years.

"(2) highlighting previously discovered crimes, and (3) documenting the Republican Party's continued support of anti-Constitutional Executive Brancy activities."

Same problem. The media will not cover your revolution.

Are you a congressman, or a senator? Just curious because when talking about the Dems you always say "we"..

ConcernedCanuck @ 66 "Are you a congressman, or a senator? Just curious because when talking about the Dems you always say "we".

Yes, "we." I'm a Democrat.

Whenever people here talk about the Dems, it's usually 'them,' because scapegoating the entire party for the actions of some portion of the party is the fallacy du jour.

I do not hold office, and never have. Nor do I work for any Democratic group, agency, individual, or PAC.

Stunning @ 63 "Once impeachment is attempted, but fails, then this opens the door for a direct prosecution of a sitting President: If impeachment is not used, direct prosecutions is permitted."

Under what theory of law?

You ignore the calendar, which will run long before any such state action is completed.

HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM WHY SO SILENT ABOUT DENNIS KUCINICH KICKING THE SHIT OUT OF EVERY OTHER CANDIDATE??!?!?!?!?!

WINNING 41 OF THE STATES~~~~!!!!!

Losing 6 to .. SOMEONE NOT EVEN IN THE RACE.. AL GORE...
