A Good Night For Dems in 2 States
Kentucky: The biggest news of the night was in the Bluegrass State where former Lt. Gov. Steve Beshear (D) crushed Gov. Ernie Fletcher (R) 59 percent to 41 percent. Fletcher had long been seen as a dead man walking politically; ethics problems in his first four years in office had badly hamstrung his reelection chances. Beshear restores Democratic control to the Kentucky governorship, an office that the party has held for all but four years since 1967. Elsewhere on the ballot, state Auditor Crit Luallen (D) was reelected with 59 percent, a margin sure to stoke speculation of a challenge to Sen. Mitch McConnell (R) in 2008.
Virginia: Republicans appear to have lost control of the state Senate, as at least three Republican incumbents and a GOP-held open seat have gone to Democrats. The race we were watching most closely -- the 34th district battle between state Sen. Jeannemarie Devolites Davis (R) and Chap Peterson (D) -- turned into a rout, with the Democrat unseating the incumbent 56 percent to 44 percent. Democrats' gains are yet more evidence of the rapidly shifting demographics in the Commonwealth. Sen. Mark Warner (D) anyone?...read on
Kos says that the RNC is claiming victory!

oh pat boone must be very upset..
Faux will still claim that a Democratic victory is actually a victory for the reich-wing....kind of like more US troops deaths is proof that "the surge is working" (Tm) and fewer US troop deaths is proof that "the surge is working" (Tm).
Virginia is my home state, although I live in the Northwest now, and I am absolutely thrilled to hear this news.
As for Fletcher, well, good riddance to bad rubbish. Now Pat Boone can go jump in the Moody River.
With the way things are going, the fact that they didn't lose every race they were in was a victory of sorts for them.
Here's a Good Night song:

I love the smell of rethug desperation in the morning - er, afternoon.
what difference does it make, the country could vote in democrates in every single state out there and they'd still let the refugs get what they want when they want it.
dumocrats in office are turning out to be useless.
I'll gladly grant the Republicans any "victory" they care to claim.
The Reslugs in Kentucky are certainly peeing in their panties, as they prostitute in the mens bathrooms.
None of this matters. Priority number one: Go Dennis! Impeach the fuckers!
kudos to Steve Beshear for turning KY blue

Well said!!
dumocrats @ 9:
I have to agree with ya...democrats have not impressed me much lately...except of course for Kucinich. but he's the ONLY one...
I voted for an independent in my Virginia district who entered the race only last month to run against a Republican who is used to running unopposed. First time she ran for office, no money and she still took 26% of the vote away from the Republican. heh. heh. heh.
What disturbed me was how many seats were up for grabs and no Democrat running for the seat. I would bet that half of the Republican seats were unopposed. I voted cartoon charcter write-ins in those instances.
John Warner, the new one, is a very classy act. He was widely respected in the state by people of all political persuasions, yet he remained a solid Democrat. He would be an excellent choice to replace the fascist John Warner.
It was a good night for Democrats in Pennsylvania, also. Agricultural preservation won in PA so did the re-districting in 2010. PA keeps getting bluer and bluer and maybe the suburbs of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh can squeeze out the Christo-fascists that live in the middle of the State.
Yayyy! Bourbon and ponies defeated the hate-mongers!! :D

So that's where KY Jelly comes from!
VA 34th District: After gun-grabber Mike Bloomberg's endorsement, she was doomed. Be sure to send a check to the NRA to show your appreciation!
REPUBLICANS UNITE FOR AN ELECTION...THEN DIVIDE THE SPOILS
DEMOCRATS DIVIDE FOR THE ELECTION... AND GET NO SPOILS
---- WE MUST STAY UNITED THROUGH 2008 TO DUMP THESE BASTARDS OUT OF POWER
---- i know we have some infighting... not a bad thing... but don't accept ANY wedge issue.... the difference is slow... it even took STUPID GEORGE a couple years to completely F*&^ things up.... we don't yet have MAJORITIES everywhere, even when we "count" over 50%.... some centrists like Feinstein (CA) and Liarman (Whocares) slow down our drive.
DON'T LET THAT TURN YOU AWAY FROM THE DEMS.... IT IS A SLOW SLOG TO TAKE POWER... THEY WILL TRY TO DISCOURAGE YOU AT EVERY TURN...
FREEDOM IS NOT FREE... WE NEED TO WORK AT IT
Even here in Utah, the reddest of the red states, people are turning against the conservative movement. A little bit, anyway. Ralph Becker, a solidly progressive Dem, won the Salt Lake City Mayor's race by about 60%-30% against a moderate Republican. This was the office occupied by the very vocal and abrasive Rocky Anderson, who was hated by the Utah legislature. The bigger news, though, was the resounding defeat of the Utah legislature's pet project, the most comprehensive school voucher program in the country. They slipped this by on the last day of last year's legislative session by one vote, but people were outraged and gathered over 120,000 signatures for a vote to force it onto the ballot. It was defeated by a two-thirds majority. The voucher program was funded by many right-wing groups outside Utah, who saw this last conserative bastion as a good chance to push this program, and also by the owner of overstock.com, a Utah company, who sank millions of his own money into it. Now even the latest Deseret News poll (the DN is owned by the Mormon church) is saying that support for Bush has dropped below 50%. Dems on the march!
they can run and hide from reality......but it'll catch up.theres no way around that!
rdale @ 22:
WOW! Yeah, Dems on the march. It gives me this visual of all the people wearing Guy Fawkes costumes marching on Washington DC. Yeah!
Funny how exhibiting the 10 Commandments or the robo calls about how Beshears would turn KY into a haven for gays and lesbians had no influence. I guess that was what can be described as the "last throes" :)
Well, in my county, which is about 25 miles south of DC, people are still living in the Stone Ages. Perhaps you've heard of us -- Prince William County -- home of the hollow "crackdown on illegal immigration" resolution? It sent Republicans out in droves and as a result, Dems only reelected two senators, picked up one house seat and one senate seat (most of which lies in another county), both in extremely close races. All the other local races (including several house seats and the chair of the board of county supervisors) went to Republicans. So, I think illegal immigration (read: racism) is a very GOTV issue for Republicans.
I just reviewed the Senate results in Virginia and noted that 4 other races where Rs one were decided by margins of less than 2 points. (48/47, 50/49, 50/49, 50/49) Ripe for the picking. With a few hundred more votes in each race this would have been a blowout for the Ds. Good work making these races competitive!
I want to sincerely wish the Republicans many more victories - just like this!
I live in Kentucky. Eugenia "Crit" Luallen is a very strong woman (she's won the battle against her cancer) with a long record of fighting waste and corruption in Frankfort. According to Chuckie Schumer, she might announce her Senate candidacy very soon. She'll force Bitch McChinless to actually fight for his seat. Plus, there are rumors that McChinless might have a primary fight as well. Longtime Repug politician Larry Forgy (who narrowly lost the governor's race in 1995) is very unhappy with the Kentucky GOP and could jump in to challenge McChinless for the Republican nomination.
It's going to be a very loooooooong year for the Senate Minority Leader.
