BREAKING: Another KBR Rape Case

The Nation:

It was an early January morning in 2008 when 42-year-old Lisa Smith*, a paramedic for a defense contractor in southern Iraq, woke up to find her entire room shaking. The shipping container that served as her living quarters was reverberating from nearby rocket attacks, and she was jolted awake to discover an awful reality. "Right then my whole life was turned upside down," she says. [..NSFW description of Smith's rape]

Over the next few weeks Smith would be told to keep quiet about the incident by a KBR supervisor. The camp's military liaison officer also told her not to speak about what had happened, she says. And she would follow these instructions. "Because then, all of a sudden, if you've done exactly what you've been instructed not to do--tell somebody--then you're in danger," Smith says.

As a brand-new arrival at Camp Harper, she had not yet forged many connections and was working in a red zone under regular rocket fire alongside the very men who had participated in the attack. (At one point, as the sole medical provider, she was even forced to treat one of her alleged assailants for a minor injury.) She waited two and a half weeks, until she returned to a much larger facility, to report the incident. "It's very easy for bad things to happen down there and not have it be even slightly suspicious."

Over the next month and a half, she says, she faced a series of hurdles. She would be discouraged from reporting the incident by several KBR employees, she says. She would be confused by the lack of any written medical protocol for sexual assault (as the only medical person on site, she treated herself with doxycycline). She would wander through a tangled maze of interviews with KBR and Army investigators about the incident without any clear explanation of her rights. She would be asked to sign several documents agreeing not to publicly discuss the incident, she says. She describes having her computer--which she saw as her lifeline, her main access to the outside world--confiscated by Army investigators as "evidence" within hours of receiving her first e-mail from a stateside lawyer she had reached out to for help.

And eventually she would find herself temporarily assigned to sleeping quarters between two Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) officials, who, she says, assured her that it was for her own safety, since her alleged assailants were at the same camp for questioning; they roamed freely. When she wanted to move about the camp to get meals etc., she was escorted.

Smith felt very alone. But she was not.

In fact, a growing number of women employees working for US defense contractors in the Middle East are coming forward with complaints of violence directed at them. As the Iraq War drags on, and as stories of US security contractors who seem to operate with impunity continue to emerge (like Blackwater and its deadly attack against Iraqi civilians on September 16, 2007), a rash of new sexual assault and sexual harassment complaints are being lodged against overseas contractors--by their own employees. HOLY GOD...

WHAT HAVE WE DONE.

Your tax dollars at work.

Friar Tuck's picture

This is truely not acceptable behavior from anyone, let alone a american solider or PC acting in the nations so called best defence.

What scum was bred in Iraq will now come home to roost to give the good decent troops a bad name .

People are beyond ugly anymore. This makes me weep.

She's a better person than me.

I'd have picked up the gun and shot them both and butted anyone who wanted me to "keep quiet".

I wonder at what point the conservatives will argue that this is another reason to exclude women from serving in the military.

Ozymandias's picture

This should be on 60 minutes.

Snore's picture

Yep. Your taxdollars. BTW: Did anybody notice in the article? She's getting paid $6000 MORE per month working overseas than as a paramedic in Illinois. I sympathize with her situation and by no means am I saying she doesn't need it... I'm sure she's going to need every penny of this to fight it and with her home situation.

$6000!!! man that's more than I make and I have a post grad degree in the hi tech field, and that doesn't count what she's making if she were in the states.

Dog bites man...
Are there any good stories out of this conflict?

they might turn around and say she was asking for it, dressed in that so sexy body armor or she gave out vibes to some of the men there. Its bullshit anyway you spin it,, and If those scumbags are arrested id like to ask them to thier face, what if that had been your mother? your sister? your wife? hell even your neighbor? there is NO EXCUSE for this type of behavioir and someone needs to be held responsible. WTF is the army letting into thier service? rapists? Damn ppl in the pentegan pull your head from your ass already!

I've heard a rather disturbing first hand report from a couple who worked in Iraq (to make their fortunes) and they didn't have anything good to say about the calibre of people that are employed...on our behalf. Thugs, mean-spirited and low life "old boy school". Not good.

Hearing these stories only reinforces what I've been told by these two people. They are an embarrassment to our country, and they ARE getting paid top dollar to take the risks and rape Iraq...literally.

Shame on us. Where have we gone, and why are we all so damn silent.

Why is it that I've got a feeling that Ms. Smith will be told by US, Iraqi and Cayman Islands courts that this case is outside of their jurisdictions?

hilbert's picture

This is utterly disgusting. Really, I have no words. And this people are supposedly "liberating" Iraq?
But I have a question to any lawyer out there: How is it even possible to "sign away" your constitutional rights?
Isnt it like "signing" into slavery? How can something like that be legal?

Ray Anne's picture

Bush will give KBR a medal
And
A no bid contract for sensitivity traing of the rest of the forces.

BennyP's picture

Bush only moved the rape room to shipping containers, huh?

This is heartbreaking and disgusting.
Prosecute the mercs, try the admin and hold the congress who granted universal immunity accountable.

IMPEACH NOW for fuk's sake.
I'm deeply ashamed to be an American.
Any suggestions on countries to flee to?

This is a bit getting out of the immediate subject.........

But I can not help respond to Hillary's recent promise. Today 4/3/08, I read that Hillary promised to defend Gays rights IF she win the White House (if she becomes the President of the United States).

Let me remind AMERICA that our Civil Rights are tied to the strength of our U.S. Constitution, our Bill of Rights, our Articles of Amendments and DEMOCRACY.

Any weakening of this devices (as seen in the past, significantly in the past seven years) are demolision of our civil rights; let alone preserving "gay rights" as presidential contender HillARY cLINTON promised today.

The is far more important task that need IMMEDIATE attention. DEFENDING OUR U.S. CONSTITUTION and UPHOLDING the laws that has been ESTABLISHED for more than two centuries that strengthened our civil rights and that defend from tyrants that try to demolish it. IMPEACHMENT is YET to be SEEN as a remedy to remove those that deserve it. There are a LONG LIST of justification for every man, woman, citizens to put forth this ACTION to WORK against those that broke it today. I don't need to utter their names......YOU know who they ARE.

Lightly off topic, but that "campusfind.com" ad with the psychotic dancer is quite obnoxious.....what was rejected?

A co-worker of mine made a comment the other day. She says she's political but only votes for who her fat cat Republican husband says to vote for. We were talking about the 4000th soldier dead. She says "That's war". So I just started beating on her. Not really but when a person says "That's war" or "War is hell" you just want to. I forgot who said it but it's said 1/10 of 1% of Americans have a stake in this war (a friend, or family member doing the fighting). I completely agree when the topic of the draft comes up. You know sure as shit, Bush would have been impeached in his first term if there was a draft and we all paid the price. I would love to hear her response when it comes to these contracters/mini soldiers. Is that "War"? We know it was "Hell" for Lisa Smith*

hilbert's picture

My biggest reason for working for KBR in the first place was so I could get insurance for my husband and girls..." Smith's sentence trails off. She begins a new one. Stops midway. She tries again to organize her thoughts. "I've been trying to figure out how I'm going to go back to work. How am I going to make myself do this?"

Oh America, what have you done.

Bonkers Hussein's picture

I just don't even understand rape or why a man would do it. Sure, sure; I've heard all the intellectual theories and the psychological motivations behind the rapist, but down inside, where it counts, where Bonkers has to live with himself and the decisions he makes every day, I just don't understand where in a person's soul that sort of evil behavior comes from. That's a good thing, I suppose.

Somehow I want Cheney held accountable. I know he was no longer CEO when this happened, but this kind of evil is his essence. These contractors are way out of control. And still DOJ is clutching their pearls and doing nothing.
To the new Prez: first fire Blackwater and all its manifestations, then fire every lawyer hired during bushco reign of terror. All departments, all lawyers.

Tonight i feel very ahsamed to be a american.!

Word spreads of this and the rest of world will think all of americans who have had prior service nothing more rapists and murder hungry scum.
Its no wonder america has become number 21 on the list of countries to go to and start new!!!!
Hell there, they have tazor happy police, fences, FBI dills telling ppl to delete a persons digi cam pics that were taken at a ballpark. spying,, illegal wire tapping, illegal detention centers. Kinda of makes the Mafia look like a bunch of kids playing cloak and dagger?

Rape is a form of a person who commits this act when they feel as though they have to have the power to be the top dog in control. Rapist are those that are who may come from a home where there was no direction and had some pretty piss poor parents or were just born a loser. Either way check the stats on the rap vics and thier attackers. Mind blower, rape among men is now going up .

Um hello USA ARMY AND all service recruiters,, you have ppl in the Iraq war that rape a 14 yr old girl then set fire to her body, some marine tosses a puppy off a huge cliff , its filmed and ppl laugh at this? Another video clip of some soliders shooting to death a dog via 50 calb bullets and that is posted on the net and ppl cheer about? Another solider throws rocks at a already dying dog and thats posted and ppl cheer about it? Shit,, then maybe the american ppl should be evaluated by thier lack of concern or outrage!!!!! WTF happend to the states??

Where was the outrage when someones head was carved off and ppl waited forever to see the video? wtf is wrong with this world??? Soliders trading pics with chicks that send back nudes of them to see head shot videos ? blood for boobs?

Yo,,,,,,,,,its getting really wacked before it gets better it will get worse. I pray the worse isint something so evil and grand via webhits that ppl forget to love on another.

And if this is what they're doing to our own, to the mother of a soldier in this conflict, what are they doing to the people we "liberated"? They would have even less legal recourse.

Its well documented that these companies are not subject to any laws in Iraq. So why would anyone work there? She took her chances for more money and now has to pay. I don't feel sorry for people who go to Iraq anymore, its self-inflicted.

We know what they're doing: bombing them, destroying their country. The Bushies gave KBR, Blackwell and all the other private contractors a license to do whatever they want to fellow employees, soldiers and Iraqis, with no oversight and few if any chances for recourse.

Nancy Pelosi and the like are condoning rape of women by not investigating and leading to criminal charges. And to think politician women would be more inclined to defend womens rights whether they are democrat or republican. I guess whatever general, bad politician is just bad no matter what gender. And there are so many women who doesn't think or care about other women and still vote Republicans into the office who works to undermine their equal rights at every opportunity. Simply amazing. We are in such sorry state that I can't comprehend.

I am not a "tough guy", but if "Lisa Smith" wanted me to, and I were alone with the KBR asshole that did this, I would take a baseball bat to their legs. Then I would cut off their pecker and feed it to the dogs as they watched.

These government contractors are not operating under any laws. Do you hear those who fight to immunize these contractors from the law? This is what criminals do all the time. Only criminals want to eliminate laws that protect the individual.

One of the biggest problems in this country, and perhaps the biggest problem, is how the law doesn't exist anymore. It doesn't. Sure it exists for some people, but it doesn't exist for others. It is not an abstract and objective principle that should be followed by everyone. There are no more laws to govern the actions of mankind. It seems as though the law has simply become just a tool for some people to take advantage of others. The law is no longer a set of morals and beliefs. All that matters now is WHO is ALLOWED to enforce the laws, whatever they may be.

Clearly, Lisa Smith hates America and wants the terrorists to win.

I think you're missing Greg's point, Ray Anne.

He's not saying that people shouldn't care unless they have friends and family over there, he's saying that people don't seem to care as much as they should- but they would care if they had friends and/or family who could be drafted and sent over there.

I don't see the cancer in that idea.

Just because it's "war" doesn't mean we have to turn a blind eye or diminish the consequences of it. Obviously, the insensitive clod that dismissed the consequences of our misadventure in Iraq saying "that's war" has no skin in the game. I dare her to make that comment to a family that lost a loved one in this insane and unnecessary conflict. Perhaps she will really understand the real meaning of Sherman's quote "War is all hell." Because it is.

But I bet they never get it.

Before i leave here and get to bed,, Id just like to thank this blog for its reporting and other extras with it.

But let me say this,, in this day and age of where each person can be tracked and found out by the US and other nations that spy on ppl, why cant they track down and find the ppl or person responsible for the rape of the woman in the above post?

There has to be card swipes to let ppl outside to do or go about thier bizz correct? I mean big brother knows when i card swipe my atm machine and send a packet from germany to the states! Why is there no big brother over there in Iraq? Yet it is forced fed down the americans throats to have SC and card swipes and finger prints and eye scans? Wait a sec, that is just a cover for a test of the big NAZI style goverment to come!Watch and see, the feds taking over the banking reserve, the feds listening to your phone calls,, the feds reading your mail via the USA post, then resealing it and of course the spying via the phone calls and computors!

Did you get it after Lisa placed ONE phone call to a state rep back in her state? after that her computor was ´´siezed´´?
If you ppl dont wake up its going to be 1938 all over again.

For the assmoles that voted for this type of goverment,, tuff! I hope as they take away the innocent, they come and kick in your door one day and take you too. You wanted it,, the money the greed and the power and now you have the backfire of which your sick greedy evil mind thought would place you over the rest of us? wake up loser, your ass in tow the line as well now.
Be sure if we are jail cellmates, you will get a sock and soap welcome :)

with that,, iam outta here,, take care all and all have a good night

Whoa, slow down there.

This is a criminal case. Pelosi- Congress for that matter- does not investigate criminal charges to prosecute in a court of law. Congress can investigate impeachable charges against Federal officials- members of Congress, Federal Judges, the POTUS and Veep- impeach in the House, convict in the Senate and remove the guilty party from office. An impeached and convicted former Federal office-holder can then be brought up on criminal charges in a Federal court where they can be, if convicted, fined, jailed or executed.

But we aren't talking about Federal office-holders here. We're talking about private citizens who are accused of commiting a crime in an area of questionable jurisdiction. Does Ms. Smith look for justice in the US courts- where some judges have tossed out these types of cases, citing lack of jurisdiction- or Iraqi courts, who seem to send US citizen vs. US citizen back to the US courts, or the Cayman Islands- home of the KBR subsidiary involved- who would probably also claim that they have no jurisdiction?

If-and only if- you are suggesting a Constitutional amendment to cover cases such as this does your argument against Pelosi hold any water. And even then, you are off base, because it's illegal to charge someone for a crime when the crime was commited before it was considered a crime!

And, after typing all of that, I've got to say that you're way off topic- and probably purposely so.

I understand it isn't just Pelosi problem. She is the majority leader and she could weald so much power and influence to make our country better for all gender and race. But nothing seem to register strongly enough to proceed with impeachment, KBR investigation, Blackwater investigation, etc. We can talk and shout all we want, we can even write to politicians and media to investigate but nothing seem to register. It is too unreal. Do we need some sort of revolution to get any justice?

I have two sons now. I will try to teach them to respect women and all races. But if one of them ever come close to this level of violence, I will be the first one to send them before the law. Can't disown them however since I am guilty of not raising them properly. I wonder how parents or family of assilants can show their faces.

You know sure as shit, Bush would have been impeached in his first term if there was a draft and we all paid the price. I would love to hear her response when it comes to these contracters/mini soldiers. Is that "War"? We know it was "Hell" for Lisa Smith*

Amego - Your buddy is right - That is war and war we have.

I reject the cancerous meme inside your statement which implies that only military of familiy of military have a stake in this war. I think that is silly.
We know who has a stake in this war and confusing the rotten bastards who benifit from this war with the poor bastards who have to fight in it - Well it just seems wrong to me.

I agree that we all have a stake in this war. But my post meant a family member or friend. It's easy for someone to ignore what's going on in Iraq because they don't know anyone there. We've seen the polls. More and more Americans are less concerned about Iraq, thanks to the media. Institute a draft and we'll pull out in 3 months after. Force the families living comfortably to send their child to die instead of college and we'll see a movement as strong as the Vietnam era. And NO deferrments for politicians kids. If Jenna and Laura had to serve there wouldn't be an Iraq War.

Hey doofus..........how about sending your mother, wife, sister or daughter?? Think a comment like yours would be just a tad inappropriate if this woman was one of your family members??

IS THERE SUCH A THING AS A FUNNY RAPE COMMENT............really, think about it. Is there ever a time when rape and humour work well together? Jesus H. Christ on a popcicle stick, some people are just ASSHOLES.

I don't think he's making a joke about rape. He's making a pointed joke about the people who say that "we're fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them over here". It's actually a serious indictment of those in charge who couldn't lead a country to save their lives. It's not a joke about rape and thus demeaning to rape victims. There's truth in humor as they say...

Do you find it easier to understand killing men women and children for 1100 bucks a month in an illegal imoral unprovocked war?

Nope. I don't. We weren't on that particular topic. But since you bring it up, believe me when I say that this whole thing sickens me. It's being done in my name, with my tax dollars, and for all intents and purposes, because my government represents me to the world, with my tacit approval.

Thanks Andy, that's exactly my point. Ray Anne, are you willing to prolong this war for the next ten years if it was your child, your friend, your father fighting? Answer honsetly. Let's get a draft going. Let's force families making $20,000 and $500,000 a year the same opportunities in Iraq. We know the truth about the enlisted. We'll be called out for saying it but a majority are the lower class without the opportunities that the upper class have(a college education).

She was anally raped. I would think anyone, man or woman would want to do something about this. Don't just make it Pelosi's problem.

True, but not just anyone can bring Articles of Impeachment or begin Congressional inquiries...Nancy can, but she refuses. That makes her an accomplice to all of the crimes her INSOBORDINATE refusal to do her job is enabling.

This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Look at what kind of people they work for. The lowest scum of the earth. This is what you get when you privatize your government. Honest people don't line up for easy money with morally questionable origins.

Bush is a thug. Bush is a dictator who has completely embraced Mugabeism; indiginous African government. Obama is on que to inherit a backwards republic fit to be headed by a negro, because it has been headed by negro caliber morals and a negro caliber IQ since 2001. Bush is not a European. He is an unevolved chimp.
Rape, as in Africa, is the law of our land. Rape is hardly a criminal offence anymore, deserving of a paltry 2 months or less if even, with the requisite protest of "racism" that the charges come to court at all, negro thugs are allowed to harass our society at leasure as long as they entertain the crowd by throwing around a pig-skin. This is Bushism. Bushism is forced upon our nation, even in unlikely areas like Lewiston Maine, no one is safe. The Iraqi girl, covering her ears from the blast of gunfire; to your daughter, forced by our degenerate culture into a warzone of a "education system". Both are not safe from the predator. Our "beloved" troops. "Our boys". The prize studs of the Neocon PNAC. They have come to rape, rape, rape! F*&k the troops! America is lost!

You don't care that you will be called a racist, if you go on like that?
If America is lost already, what's you point?
And what do you think liberal Africans, like the brave people of Zimbabwe, think about your statements?
