Schoolhouse Rock defines a generation: this morning my third grade son had a school program, during which the students recited the Preamble to the US Constitution. Practically the entire audience of forty-something suburban parents suppressed both giggles and the urge to sing the version above, some more successfully than others.

McCain uses the Hamas card against Obama. Did the gas tax holiday issue help defuse the Wright non-issue? Obama's staff also blame Rush for Indiana's results, while Rush now claims Obama can't win. Chrysler will give you a discount

And it may survive yet.

I'm of that Schoolhouse Rock generation. Sing along: "I'm just a bill, just a lonely old bill, sitting on Capitol Hill..."
The whole series is out on DVD now. I've gotten my 10-year-old son into it. :)
Why is that when the so called "liberal media" ruled the air waves we got lessons on American values like this (sure, it isn't entirely accurate but it least it had a catchy tune) and now we get lambasted with hate speech telling us that we need to wear a lapel pin to be a real American?
I understand other political websites are down.

Hillary is a lazy white woman.
Obama is still nice enough to consider her on the ticket. She's still broke, though, and she's trying to avoid further embarrassment.

When the vote was that close and she is pushing on, I have to wonder what the f**k. We've got one mayor yelling on CNN to just go by what the computers are saying while the county is trying to verify the votes. What have you heard?
If some how Hillary ends up with the nomination i will be singing:
It's my party and I'll cry if I want to
Cry if I want to, cry if I want to
You would cry too if it happened to you
Nobody knows where our democracy has gone
But Habeas left the same time
Why have fair elections been banned
When we are supposed to lead the world?
It's my party and I'll cry if I want to
Cry if I want to, cry if I want to
You would cry too if it happened to you
Black Box voting says the last county was polled at 75% Obama but went 75% Hillary.

Schoolhouse Rock is about the only definer of 'my generation' it sometimes seems. Between The Electric Company and Sesame Street, wow TV was once educational. I wouldn't have been able to keep from singing it. That's how it's imprinted upon my brain.
Hillary isn't for anyone but Hillary. What gives me gray hairs (and I've got more than enough thank you) is her possible nuclear option. It goes something like this: Obama gets to the convention with more than enough delegates but Hillary leads in some random statistic (more left-handed Latino voters in states that start with a vowel) and declares that the nomination was "stolen" from her by party insiders (or right-handed Latino voters) and she declares herself an independent (ala Lieberman) and gives the election to McSame. And you don't think she is self-serving enough to do this you haven't watched her for the last 16 years.
TDS did an amazing SchoolHouse Rock spoof about mid term elections:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=oowPidJSeb4
And SNL did a great Conspiracy Theory Rock about media ownership:

Fortunately its time for KO here in the Seattle area. If any of you remember a musical comedian, I forget his name (Mark something?), he played piano and sang polictical songs. He had one that went something like, "And then I turned to the sports page... we're they can't make losers seem like winners..." So here we have one of the few honest news announcers and lo and behold, he was a sportscaster. How prophetic.

'swonderful that kids get educated about the constitution by any means possible, including this song, which is well sung in a voice reminiscent of the late Karen Carpenter. But why the banjo? This instrument invented by enslaved African Americans, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banjo, is always used when portraying in movies back-road car chases, and anything else Americana. To me, using that otherwise wonderful insturment in that cliched manner seems to somehow further the meme that Americans with "values" are really at their core just down-home, anti-elitist/intellectual, Little House on the No Fairies Allowed, let's John Wayne our way across the globe, have a beer together white guys. That kind of banjo bugs me. There's some wonderful bluegrass music with banjo, though, but I also like the way Taj Mahal used it. Well, McCain certainly knows how to woo the Conservative/Republican base. Anything that is vague in description and can not possibly be "won" because the target tends to be a matter of perspective or an action is the perfect cause for a war from their view. McCain's latest war cry is to have a war on "evil". That is probably the most ridiculous cause for a war that I have ever heard of but the Conservatives will eat it up none the less. It beats Bush’s war on “terror” hands down that’s for sure.
To woo conservatives, McCain pledges war on 'evil'
http://rawstory.com/news/2008/McCain_declares_war_on_evil_0508.html
From NYT via Americanblog:
Sen. John McCain championed legislation that will let an Arizona rancher trade remote grassland and ponderosa pine forest here for acres of valuable federally owned property that is ready for development, a land swap that now stands to directly benefit one of his top presidential campaign fundraisers.
Initially reluctant to support the swap, the Arizona Republican became a key figure in pushing the deal through Congress after the rancher and his partners hired lobbyists that included McCain's 1992 Senate campaign manager, two of his former Senate staff members (one of whom has returned as his chief of staff), and an Arizona insider who was a major McCain donor and is now bundling campaign checks.

I come from that generation too and after reading some of the comments, it brought back so many memories. Thanks for bringing them back.
diamondmc @ 95:
i already tried recommending grampa ty try tapdancing on the sunny side of the street a little more often, but it's still 24/7 doom n' gloom with that guy.
would you believe he was once a fearless man in uniform, korea circa '51..?
[this is just a warning, everybody back off. It's too early and I have finished my first cup of coffee yet. sheesh. Site Monitor.]
Diamond since you put it that way! yeah pretty much! enjoy the reality!
UN suspends aid to Myanmar after military seizes aid relief shipments:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080509/ap_on_re_as/myanmar_cyclone
I'm not normally for entangling military in this sort of thing, but couldn't the UN hold an emergency session and get some military backing to go in here? Just wonderin'...
when's amato gonna bring back the gravatars? i miss seeing everyone's little pictures.
stan rosenthal says he knows how to do it. won't someone from c&l get on it?
whats 1951 got to do with today diamond? when i left korea i said this wars not over yet , some day leaveing korea with the communists still there will come back to haunt us , guess i dont get to much wrong,
YEAH!! Schoolhouse Rock!!
I loved SHR. Knew them all by heart. Still do. Which is really funny for a Canadian. :D But let's face it... they're so well done how can you not like them?
bullfrog since your a backstaber and a fair weather friend i wont respond to much to your snide remark , but you have a nice day sonny!
tyree@98: Sorry Sir, I don't walk around with that dark cloud over my head. Got to keep on trying to change the way this country is going. If we all take your viewpoint then we surrender to the enemy. I will NEVER surrender.
tyree@101: I don't know, you brought up 1951, so you tell me.
diamond ,and will you take up arms if you have to to avoid surendering ? because it may come to that!
no you brought up 1951 diamond not me?
I'm of that generation.
So much of what I know can be traced back to those short cartoons, which were produced back when the Federal government still required that a certain percentage of kids programming be "educational". ABC's "School House Rock" segments during commercial breaks were "Must See TV".
Thanks to SHR, I know the Preamble, I know how a bill becomes a law. I know what a "Conjunction" is and I know what "Interjections" are. :)
tyree@107: I'm 60yrs old, I to have also fought in one of our shitty (viet nam) wars. I have seen and done alot in my life. I've been a member of a outlaw motorcycle club for 30yrs and I have also worked in leftwing poltics most of my adult life. That should answer your question.
tyree@108: Show me were I brought up 1951.
but it doesnt diamond! i dont disparage viet nam vets , you insinuated by your statement on can you believe this guy fought in korea in 1951, what was your meaning? that i cant have an opinnion other then the one you have?
It's a bit early this mornin for a minor skirmish, ain't it guys?
apparently your statements been stricken from your post , its gone now but it was attached to your post!
[I removed nothing tyree. I'd like everyone to take a break for 5 minutes ok. I'd really like to finish my coffee. Site Monitor]
tyree, I don't know what the hell you are talking about? I never mentioned Koera or your right to have a opinion. All I said is I don't agree with your viewpoint.
morning mudshark! thiers no flameing going on , i believe its called self defence!
tyree@114: Eveything that I have posted on this thread is still up. If someone attached something to one of my posts, please direct your comments to that person.
at any event the statements gone now, so forget it,
I remember watching that during Fat Albert. Ha Ha.
sorry diamond apparently it was bull frog , i miss read the post!
I bought this video for my young grandchildren to see and learn from, only to find that my grown children, their parents, were thrilled to see it and recall the songs themselves.
tyree@120: Thanks, no big deal.
I read where it is unprecedented that Myanmar is refusing humanitarian aid. Didn't DOHS refuse the worlds help in rescuing our own during Hurricane Katrina? The swedes wanted to give us a free water purification machine, the germans wanted to give us a working phone system; all support offered to us was quickly dismissed as unneeded. All the while Dumbya was trying to learn to play guitar, on vacation, watching baseball, or eating birthday cake.
Instead, it took a week to draft up another contract for Blackwater to go in there like it was a war zone guns drawn house to house; there was no humanitarian aid whatsoever. Our national guard and their equipment tied up in Iraq.
Katrina @ 124:
You raise a very valid point. I for one see the similarities.
Katrina @ 124:
You summed it up perfectly.
I'd really like to see if Bush, Cheney, or McCain could recite the preamble. I doubt they can, and if they could they probably think its all too liberal.
I think it would be good if Obama opened up his acceptance speech with those words. That as President he will strive for a more perfect union and fight hard to:
* provide for the common defense
* establish justice
* promote the general welfare
* ensure domestic tranquility
* and secure the blessings of liberty for ourselves and our children and our children's children.
It would be great to have a President work for that.
the thing is the day the korean war ended and all my buddies were patting thier selves on the back old doom and gloom tyree said dont congratulate yourselves so early , i said look at thoes mountains boys the north koreans are going to dig in to them so deep we,ll never blow them out of them , i said they can dig tunnels under the dmz and they will rebuild thier forces better then they were! of course i believed it wouldnt be for another ten yrs before they became such a threat , wrong on the time line, but not on the outcome , and you know what the boys said sorry terrible that was my nickname even the skipper called me that , to go on they said the north koreans would never be a threat again , old doom and gloom was right, hey i take no enjoyment in being right ,the fact is if we ever have to try and take thoes hills ever again blood will flow off thoes hills and look like a river!
I sang the Preamble Song to my intro US history class (college). It's an effective way to remember the words (even if it's missing 4).
Few peopl know who the genius was behind Schoolhouse Rock, Bob Dorough was the principal music director. A well established figure in the jazz field, he wrote a large number of the Schoolhouse songs as well as performing many. To assist in the performances, he brought on board many of the friends he had made and performed with from the jazz world. You can find Mr. Dorough touring hotel bars and jazz clubs on the east coast. If you are a bop jazz fan take some time and listen to him, he and Blossom Dearie (yes that is her real name) are two of my favorites.
Schoolhouse rock is returning, sort of...
From Bobs site
http://www.bobdorough.com/
"Most of the original team is back, doing songs about the Inconvenient Truth, with Tom Yohe, Jr. taking the place and nicely so of his father, the late Tom Yohe who was director of animation for the series. Songs are being written by Lynn Ahrens, David Frishberg, Bob Dorough, George Newall, and their new writer, Andy Brick. Sessions are being booked and Bob Dorough will make a fast flying trip to Los Angeles to record the voice of Jack Sheldon, who is one of the most favored voices in Schoolhouse Rock. The new series, for Disney/ABC, will most likely be offered in a DVD format rather than being broadcast as they were in the seventies. But stay tuned."
Ha. My daughter heard me playing this from the other room and ran in.... "What are you watching?"... She's now a 19 year old university student, recognized it from grade school, and started singing along!
My husband's freshman history professor asked the class if anyone knew the Preamble and the entire room spontaneously burst into "We the People, in order to form a more perfect union...." - singing the whole thing having learned it from Schoolhouse Rock. We have the DVD - we both grew up on this stuff (we're both 42). It was and still is fantastic.
The forces of propoganda are coopting the internets inherent democratic value.
uruknet.info, No longer searched by google. Why? It's all about occupied lands of the US and Israel.
Wikipedia got caught with Zionists in their midst. We should be careful that the rewriting of history is not occuring.
Honestly, the doubt I have towards Israel and the last 60 years makes me question the severity of the Holocaust.
Heh. In 1981, My 8th Grade Civics teacher broke the bad news that we would be required to recite the Preamble as part of our grade. "Now, it's not really that hard," he began....
My class, en masse, simply sang it to him. "Can we have our A now?"
The man was astounded and went and told the teacher in a neighboring classroom... and THAT class sang it to him, too. Turns out, nearly every student in the six 8th grade classrooms already knew it from Schoolhouse Rock.
And now I have subjected all my nieces and nephews to the DVDs. The wheel goes round.

-->tyree, it might interest you to know: the conservative element (aka old folks: alive during the war), in Korea, are still pro-USA. People under the age of 45 are anti-USA (and often feel a stronger affiliation with their separated-brothers in North Korea, but don't want re-unification because of the economic downside). They are anti-USA because they don't see how you help them at all, other than only the wealthiest Korean corporations/elite, and are actually a drain-on-the-economy with all the bases and GIs over here (true or not). And they see how you are fucking up the world, in general, and are the force behind globalisation, and verging on America Empire.
Their recollection of the war is of two empires battling each other, while they got stuck in the middle. Yes, the USA and Russia, using Korea as a training ground. They are sometimes bitter. (As the Vietnamese call the "Vietnam war", the "American war".)
Next time McSame says, bases like in Germany and Korea, realize each has a unique story to tell (with a very negative side included), and it ain't in the least similar to IRAQ!!!!!!!!
The troops in Korea aren't always "greeted as liberators:" by all. And, yes, their is still a communist ideal (or extreme left) left in the minds of some: not that they want it, but they see the merits.

I think North Korea will go the way of China, given time, and perhaps once Kim Jong il is not dear leader. In the meantime there is no preceived attack threat to any neighbours: it just won't happen. The only possible threat is nuclear, but I am quite certain it is for self-defence only, a deterrrent, to say, "We are not Iraq. You may not march in here with your empire." (They have no oil anyway, but... )
#141 bitter edwin, my how soon they forget ,id assume koreas history books are very limited as to what happened on june 25th, 1950 , the north koreans attacked from the north with a humungas artillery barrage and engaged the few south korean divisions above soul , with t34 tanks and overwhelming ground forces , many of whom fought against the nationalist chinese army and were extreemly good , the south was left by the american government with no offencive armaments fearing sigman rhee would try to forcefully reunite north and south korea, he as much as said he would if possible, thier were few american combat troops in korea on the day of the attack , just a few advisors and security guards for the embassy in soul, the south koreans dragged young kids off the streets and put rifels in thier hands and forced them to fight, after the north koreans broke thru the south korean lines civillians fled south towards pusan, and with hundreads of civillians on the han river bridge it was blown up with many civillians killed
then we forced the united nations to send troops to defend the south koreans , but first general mac sent garrison troops untrained and with little ammo and combat gear to delay the north koreans , our guys bled not for this country but for the south koreans and for three yrs and three months we kept bleeding for them, now if the korean people have become such pricks they dont remember what it was like to be controlled by the communists then screw them, we left thousand of communist gurellias there and im sure they have a great inflence on the young and stupid who never sufferd thru that war!
and i will add one more thing about the fatasy about us and russia useing korea for a proveing ground for our weapons except for jet fighters and thiers we never had any weapons that werent used in ww2, we used old outdated crap the same shit that was left over from fighting on iwo jima okinawa and even d day on normandy, what crap , personally id like to see our troops out of there , watch the koreans shit in thier drawers if we ever do!
oh and that was just a short version of the korean war and its probably 51 sentences more then youll find in the korean history books and outside of two south korean army divisions the rest of the south korean army was shit and everytime they were attacked they broke and ran exposeing our flanks and got many a good american boy killed!!!!!!!!!!
i still know the 50 united states in alphabetical order, after having to sing them... not sure when... but still know them.
"50 nifty united states from 13 original colonies."... too bad i did not learn the preamble, seems a bit more, important.... anyone else know stuck with this song after thirty years?
We the people; well not women or blacks or non land owners or any indigenous tribes that will be genocidically slaughtered later ...
Somehow school rock always left off that last part called REALITY.
