Battle of the Political Ads
By SilentPatriot Wednesday May 21, 2008 11:50amFrom the great state of Missouri, where party-line Republican Sam Graves is taking on the former Mayor of Kansas City, Democrat Kay Barnes.

Yay for SF values! Love and tolerance baby!
Oil, Oil, Boil And Bubble
I may have to move to the other side of the state to vote for Kay.
Sam is a cheapshot artist using that tired old tactic. Excatly what "values" does he purport?
I still can't figure out what San Francisco style values are exactly. I didn't even realize that geographic locations had values.
There's a black man in that video! DANCING! and he might be...could be...what does that cowboy hat imply...oh my GOD! San Francisco values are scary!
Hey Silentpatriot. I assume you're the same one from youtube. Is there any explanation for why your channels keep getting suspended over there. I'm sure the community over here would be happy to support you if you posted some details about the situation. Thanks for all your great work.
It's pretty obvious there is a racial (racist) message in that ad in addition to the implied gayness of the guy dancing.
Sam Graves should have run this ad instead.

Here, ashton. This is just a snapshot in time and not meant to be representative of the whole area or everyone living there, but I think it may be helpful for you.
The gravitas of Kay Barnes' ad...versus the childish Sam Graves ad...wow. Hope the stations play them back-to-back, or at least in close proximity. It will be obvious who has the constituents' interests at heart.
What Sam doesn't realize is that the State of California is equal to almost 25% of the GNP.
It is also the most populated State with well over 36 Million people. It hold more House seats and more Electoral Votes than any other.
Buh-bye Sam .......
These GD republicans just can't get the gay sex/lifestyle out of their heads.
Is this guy a closet queen, too? If not, would somebody PLEASE explain the republican fascination with gay sex, gay marriage, gay lifestyles?
**People Emergency on Democracy now!**
Ickes: We want the Michigan uncommitted to stay uncommitted
In a conference call with reporters, Clinton Senior Adviser Harold Ickes clarified their position on Michigan -- they don't want the 55 "uncommitted" delegates to go to Obama (his name did not appear on the ballot in Michigan).
There have been reports that some of the uncommitted delegates in Michigan already selected are union supporters of Clinton. This solution, unsurprisingly, would make it much harder for Obama to clinch a pledged delegate majority.
Last week, the Clinton campaign was agnostic on the issue -- but they seem to ratcheting up the noise, or at least their negotiating position.
Ickes also mentions that the co-chairs of the Rules and Bylaws Committee -- which will rule on Florida and Michigan on May 31 -- have been holding "informal meetings" with leaders of both of the campaigns.
That means Obama gets nothing! How much of a fair vote is that!
Scorched Earth in progress people!
The GOP message is...we must believe in the lord, the flag, the war, $5 dollar gas so that we can honor the troops and hold the homos at bay.
Hillary continues to jigger the numbers to avoid reality. She's splintering the party as we speak.
Monkeywright @ 6:
Mmm.. nope I don't get it. Is he referring to gays? Maybe if he showed a clip of some gay porn will it make more sense. There's not enough gay porn coming from the values front these days.
dennis @ 10:
Still drinking the cool-aid eh Dennis.
Um....did they pay some gay people to dance for that ad? What self respecting queen would pimp himself out like that? Did they realize?
But maybe I don't get it, what with my San Francisco values and all.
annique @ 19:
I visited San Francisco last month, and the general atmosphere was spectacular scenery and a very upbeat, happy population of people.
I'll take those values ANY DAY.
$10 gas will keep you from getting teh gay.
do boy gays dance with girl gays?
good job, Dennis, go get yer McCain blog points!
Great contrast there. But let's be honest about gas prices. They are going to eventually double to $8 per gallon. We can blame the Rethugs for accelerating the price increase. But no politician can bring them back down to $2 or $3 ever again.
The graves ad looks like a youtube joke. The fact that he claims it at the end makes it that much more amusing.
Do these idiots get that "san francisco values" isn't going to ring with anyone who isn't a bigoted xian over 50? Oh right, I forgot, reslugs are living in their own special dark ages.
The second ad easily overwhelms the idiocy of the first. All the reslug douche has to offer is "OMG! teh GAY!! Teh brown peoples! RUN!"
Meanwhile all the Dems have to do is tell the world about the reslug record. You know, facts.
Given the reslug penchant for equating intelligence with 'elitism' I'm honestly surprised they haven't started trying to convince the populace that 'facts' and 'truth' are the tools of the DEVIL and must be ignored at all costs. Oh wait they've already got their big haired preacher buddies doing that for them.
ashton @ 5:
Here, ashton and here and here . This is NOT just a snapshot in time, but is meant to be representative of their whole party and everyone supporting their party. I think it may be helpful for you.
MargeAggedon @ 24:
It looks like a very, very, very badly produced SNL skit. Reich-wingers are going to in a permanent fetal position when they wake-up in November and realize they have sunk to permanent minority status. We'll be able to show them asinine clips like this as to why America has rejected their petty, vile, and hateful ways.
Silly Sam Graves. Why are bottoms always so damn mean?
I've lived in San Francisco, I've lived in Charlotte, NC....San Francisco is better.
I've lived in Boston, I've lived in Roanoke, VA...Boston is better.
I've lived in Chicago, I've lived in New Orleans...New Orleans was fun, but considering what surrounds the city--rural Lousianna, TX, MS, AR, OK,--Chicago is better!
These assholes and their so-called 'family values' don't seem to get the idea that their sanctimonious bullshit is sending all of us down the drain!
What kind of entertainment will they have at the GOP Convention?
Are there fun booths like "Shoot a Terrorist". "$5 - Let Cheney Shoot You In the Face", "Find the WMD Maze", "Create Your Own News booth"?
More Reich-wing Values
McBush, who frequently touts his "devotion" to his fellow veterans, skipped the vote today to increase GI Bill benefits to hold a swanky fundraiser in California. And, Lindsey Graham (R-SC) stated on the record that if Republicans Vote Against The 21st Century GI Bill, ‘We Will Get Rewarded In The Next Election’.
Bye, bye reich-wingers...
"Here, ashton. This is just a snapshot in time and not meant to be representative of the whole area or everyone living there, but I think it may be helpful for you."
None of the pictures indicated that it had anything to do with San Francisco. Standing in front of a GAP store does not transport you to San Francisco last time that I checked.
Dr. (Bitter Hussein) Matt @ 30:
I wish someone could explain that part I highlighted in bold print for me. How would voting against the Vet Bill help the GOP?

How ELITIST.
as a native of missouri, i can only agree with anyone who thinks this state is full of fucking nazi motherfuckers!!
unless you have fully experienced the "border state" HATE you won't fully understand it.
ABORTIONS ON DEMAND!!
Dammit, I DEMAND an abortion! Right now! True I'm a male and I can't get pregnant, but damn it, I want my Abortion on Demand!
Lindsay Graham is living in an alternate universe.
Love the dancers! Clearly they are not from San Francisco! We dance better than that here.
Darth_Romney @ 28:
e>
Barack Obama pretty much already said that, Darth.
But some things can't be repeated often enough.
♠Bangkok-Bob♠ @ 32:
He's a reich-winger, he doesn't have to make sense or need an explanation.
Screw the issues; how do I get invited to that party?
Woo hoo! Party over here, party over there...

All the Nays are reich-wingers…..anyone surprised?

I think her ad wins.
Liberal AND Proud @ 35:
To go along with his alternative lifestyle?
Talk about going for the fucking jugular.
The Graves ad seemed very closet (har) minded and pretty simple. The Barnes ad was... really strong.
When you use "pathetic" towards it, and it hits the mark, man... I love continually showing the 1989 neon people dancing supposedly representing gays. Likely the only time a republican will put a black man in an ad.
If this is the best Republicans can come up with, it's going to be one long night for them come November.
Thanks for providing the list who voted against the GI Bill. Earth to Lindsey Graham, if the GOP thinks it will be rewarded for voting against this bill, why the hell did pretty much ever single vulnerable Republican incumbant (including Dole and Wicker!) vote for it? (Well, except for Cornyn, but since he's Bush's Senate lapdog he'd never go against his master's wishes.)
I've got a coat hanger and a hoover! Let's go!
Abortions for some, miniature flags for others!
What a ridiculous ad! Laughable! Juvenile!
San Francisco is one of America's greatest cities. One of the world's greatest, for that matter.
Let's' see, San Fran has given us Levi's, high-tech software, Ghiradelli's chocolate, sourdough bread, cable cars, the Golden Gate Bridge, spectacular natural scenery, Hewlett-Packard ... oh, I could go on and on, but I hate wasting time trying to rebut such foolishness ...
Give me those "liberal values" any day!
the repug ad was hilarious....they hired actors to do the bump
usually they show scenes from one of the gay pride parades
the funniest thing is showing the loving couple at the end of the ad....errr, is heterosexuality now frowned upon by the repugs?
and no one drinks wine or champagne in mo??
if i was a voter in mo, i would vote for the dem....lets party like its 1999, before bush got in and fucked up the country
Yeah, I'm not from CA, but after just seeing the top ad, I sure as hell would vote for Kay Barnes now!
One day old topic.
Ya know, I think the idea of blogs in general, is that we don't have to wait for the next days news cycle to catch us all up. We have instant access to issues and current events, in real-time. So it always confuses me when C&L is a day - or often more - late with stories that have been pasted on every other blog around.
San Francisco values... shhh... that means gay (between you and me, wink).
Ugh, Republicans. Homophobes and racists the lot of 'em.
Sam Graves – proud, date-raping, fag-bashing dickweed. Bet he don't like forinners, neither.
Uh Sam buddy...is your resume up to date?
Whew. I have to say, when I first saw this article on this blog, I was fully prepared to come into the comments section ready to defend my fellow Missourians who seem to take a trouncing every time one of our idiot Republicans does something stupid. I had to do that when our lame-ass drunk senator Kit Bond said something thoroughly banal and retarded about waterboarding and suddenly my entire flyover state "supported torture" according to some of you. I'm happy to see we can now separate the good Missourians from the bad Missourians and move on. Please continue to use the reasoning section of your brains.
Go Barnes!
"What kind of entertainment will they have at the GOP Convention?
Are there fun booths like “Shoot a Terrorist”. “$5 - Let Cheney Shoot You In the Face”, “Find the WMD Maze”, “Create Your Own News booth”?"
You forgot the "W I D E stance" booth!
I wonder what the models for the commercial thought they were doing?
Watching that dude in the cowboy hat dance, I'm pretty sure he's not gay. No gay guy is that bad of a dancer. In fact he's so bad I'm not even sure he's black!
Funny ad. I want to hang with the dancing partyers. At least they are smiling and having fun.
Dr. (Bitter Hussein) Matt @ 25:
Now, Matt. I think you know that there are literally dozens of Republicans who aren't criminals or pedophiles.
Lance @ 58:
Republican "fun" entails drinking heavily and screaming swear words. E.g., Nascar, golf.
Like someone at YouTube mentioned, the "I Dig" Graves ad had racism, misogyny, homophobia and bigotry covered in about a half-minute.
Takes some doing to get that done - and they did it. But then again, the republican party has a long list of ideas and people they despise.
New republican party slogan: So Much To Hate ... So Little Time!
notanamerican @ 58:
I wouldn't put it past the GOP to employ some straight cracker in black face in the ad...
BTW, how is it OK for midwesterners to insult, piss and moan about the West Coast or New England. And yet god forbid we get to call them backwards redneck bigots.... even when they act publicly as backwards redneck bigots.
I am a native San Franciscan. I own a house in San Francisco. I have been married to the same man for 19 years. We love our child, pay our taxes and give to charity. So in my world here in San Francisco, those are my San Francisco values! What an ass to run this ad. This guy has NOTHING to run on except him being an enabler to bushes illegal and immoral war and raping of the American people. How dare he insult me and my fellow San Franciscans!
People keep trying to respond to this ad with reason and intellect. But that's not what sways voters. Voters vote on emotion, and the republicans get that. Intellectual voters are not a majority in this country. That is not a sarcastic comment, but one of observation. That's why ads with dancing gays WORK. That's why reps keep winning the presidency. That's why McCain STILL LEADS IN THE ELCTORAL COLLEGE MAP, AND IS ON TRACK TO BECOME PRESDIENT. Democrats have to get real and shape their arguements to speak to people's base, simple, 7-second attention span reactions. Sad but true. We can't afford to lose again.
Scott @ 65:
What? People also respond to the things they see and feel in their wallets. $4 gasoline means a hell of a lot more than some invocation of "San Francisco Values."
"Oh dear lord! Those people are dancing! And they're having abortions on Demand! Is that what you want in YOUR district?"
Hate, Fear, Repeat. Since that moron approved this ad, he and the actors in it deserve all the ridicule in the world.
Sam Graves was the rep from my district...the man is an idiot. Can't answer questions, voted 98% for anything republican, a Bush lover. He is as smart as a rock and not as useful.

That Graves ad didn't even run in KC. Either they didn't want to pay the ad rates... or the stations rejected it because it was a crappy ad... :)
Oooh...shot him with his own gun.
Great comeback ad. If all Dems run like that, it'll be a massacre come November.
Another Missourian (transplanted from Mississippi) voicing in.
My dad lives in KC and I live across the state. This will play well with quite a few people in KC. They do tend to be a little more conservative there, and a lot more authoritarian.
There are also some very liberal people in Missouri, who actually read books and pay attention to the alternative media. I'm proud to be representing that faction here. The fact that there are several of us here proves that we aren't all redneck rubes.
Heck, some of us don't even like NASCAR or own a gun.
dennis @ 10:
Dennis, given the chance, I'd smash your skull in with a rock.
Scott @ 65:
He's right you know.
My solution...? The next country we invade...
CANADA.
After we annex them, we'll be thrown so far to the Left that we'll have World Peace inside of 6months.
KC's is pretty metropolitan. Don't think that Neocon crap plays very well there. Out-state MO's got Cracker's by the ass load, but most of the major cities are Blue, with exception of Springfield, home of God and John Ashcroft.
