For some reason, the White House feels comfortable accusing Congress of not working hard enough.

White House spokesman Tony Fratto said Tuesday that Senate Democrats "put off a lot of work" when they left town last week without passing several pending bills.
"They've been in session for a long time, and some very critical pieces of legislation got put off for yet another recess," Fratto said.

This, of course, is hilarious, given the source.

"The Daily Show" turned its attention Wednesday [Aug. 17, 2007] to presidential vacations, commenting briefly on French President Nicolas Sarkozy's visit to President Bush in Kennebunkport before asking "Senior Western White House Correspondent" Samantha Bee about Bush's return to Crawford, TX.
"This place is abuzz with expectation," said Bee excitedly. "It's no longer a question of if the president will break the record, but when."

"Most vacation days taken by a sitting president," Bee explained when Jon Stewart asked what record she meant. "People said that Reagan's 436 would stand forever, but right now, as you can see, this president stands on 423, meaning his record should fall less than two weeks from today. And they said it shouldn't be done."

Does the president's spokesman really want to complain about lawmakers who "put off a lot of work"?

When has George Bush actually worked? All his life, he has been handed chushy jobs, and still he screwed them up. As for Congress not working hard enough! Well, duh.

jitter's picture

Are you really sure you want GW hard at work? Or congress for that matter?

Over 50 vacation days a year? It sounds so French.

well there's his legacy: most vacation days taken.. and torture!

republican = insanity!

The 109th Congresss took four day weekends for its entire 'working' history, usually ended the day before four o'clock. The only times it worked late, for the most part, was when the right wing majority wanted to get a vote on a bill not published until past time for the voting.

The more Georgie takes a vacation. The less He'll strike Iran(I hope). Let's hope Chaney is on vacation too.

Oh for god's sake, let bush go to crawford and stay the hell there until next year. Fine by me, but keep an eye on cheney.

As for Tony, he's just all pissie because Congress wouldn't obey when told to.

Not only is Bush a shitty president, he's the laziest one as well. Glad to know he's good at something besides getting Americans killed for no reason and destroying our international reputation for a generation.

I'm with you. Let him go there and stay there. Maybe he will fall of his bike, while eating a pretzel.

I am thinking about running for Congress, though. I could use me some of that vacationin'!

Of course the main "critical pieces of legislation" that they're worried about is the unlawful retroactive immunity for the law breaking telecoms to thus protect the low life criminal scum currently residing in the White House.

No sense in showing up when you're not really running things anyway.

That goes for BOTH congress and the prez.

Jeez, I wish I had that kind of free time. Maybe I should run for congress/president so I can get more vacation time.

This is a bogus issue from both sides. When the legislature is on recess, most of the members go home to their districts, meet with constituents, work with district offices, march in parades and raise money. They typically are not sunning on a beach.
When the president is on "vacation," he is with staff members, is briefed on developing news constantly and able to take action as necessary without being physically at the White House.

Take action the way he did in 2001 when he was in Crawford and was notified that bin laden was determined to strike the US?

Thanks for pointing that out.....duh. Basically, this whole government is bogus and we are probably better off when the Preznit is clearing brush (chain saws can be dangerous) and the Congress isn't writing/enacting legislation that diminishes our civil rights and reassigns more wealth to the ruling class.

I read last week where one GOP lawmaker ( Tom Coburn R-OK ) had over 100 holds on bills in Congress just by himself. The GOP have been able to manipulate Congress from the minority. Can blame Reid and Pelosi ( off the table ) mostly for that but the GOP are in full obstruction and blame mode. The GOP dont play nice with their Screw America - Party First agenda. Just hope the majority of Americans can wade through the pile of crap being spewed and see who the real assholes are and send them back to political Purgatory forever. It cant happen fast enough.

Yes, add my support for Bush spending the rest of his presidency in Waco.
The Dickster has a handle on details of the last 90 days anyway. You would be better off not knowing details of the purge of whats left of our nations assets anyway........you would just get in the way.

And then there are aalllll those 'motions to rise' and 'motions to adjourn' by the publicans during the sessions of Congress, which eat up to 30 minutes per, in order to count the votes. Which is then voted down - until the next obstreperous motion. It's like a parliamentary breath-holding tantrum when the publicans aren't getting their way. Unfortunately, this tactic often works on the boneless Dems. *sigh* (:>

Are they also counting all of those late-night Jeff Gannon visits to the White House as vacation time? If so, he had this record years ago.....

Bush's annual August recess will put him over the top with nearly five months left in office.

I understand when Bush Sr. was in office little Georgis would walk through the White House and tell everyone to work harder. He is a fine example of a man noone should take after.

Didn't George Jr. break Reagan's vacation record back in 2005? By now he must have set a record that nobody will EVER break. That combined with the fact that the 109th congress used to work THREE DAY work weeks, and the fact that the previous vacation record was held by Reagan makes the GOP the champions of "Slackass Values."

Then, of course, the 110th congress was forced to set a record for the MOST work days when they were forced to keep the Senate in session year round to prevent The Shrub from appointing Rush Limbaugh as ambassador to The Dominican Republic as a recess appointment.
