David Gregory: Broader implications for the party
By John Amato Thursday Aug 07, 2008 8:00pmYes, John Edwards had an affair that was handled privately and the Edwards story is big news. It will get the Anna Nicole Smith/Brett Favre treatment for a while now. Elizabeth Edwards responds here.
From the email inbox:
David Gregory just said young people were inspired by him and are let down...and questioned whether it will have "broader implications for the party." during the election. This week, Ron Suskind's book revealed the Bush team knew Iraq didn't have WMD, forged letters, paid hush money, and lied us into war. (Chirp, chirp...) Any broader implications for the Republican party there? How about instead of us buying into all the clamoring to analyze Edwards betrayal (wait, no, BETRAYAL!) we analyze the absurdity of a media culture where THIS is what passes for holding politicians accountable.
Broader implication for the party. OK, let's talk party.
McClellan said that FOX News got talking points from the White House
Bush authorized rendition.
Bush authorized torture. Yes, that means waterboarding.
Bush authorized a war based on lies resulting in millions of innocent Iraqi and Afghani civilian deaths as well as an ethnic cleansing.
Thousands of our troops have been killed or seriously injured.
The US dollar is in the tank.
The housing/mortgage crisis has almost caused a depression.
How about the trampling of our Constitution with warrantless wiretapping?
Laptops are being confiscated at airports and the border.
Under Bush, oil companies are raking in record profits while Americans suffer.
The US attorney scandal.
A health care epidemic.
Monica Goodling
A standing ovation in Congress for David Vitter's return.
Military TV Analysts/Generals scandal.
Larry Craig's bathroom adventure.
And many, many more.
Would any of this have "broader implications" to the Republican party during the election if the media did its job?
Newt Gingrich STILL gets on TV every other day and everyone KNOWS he had affairs, even dumping his wife right after cancer surgery. And yet all these MSM types are wringing their hands about what this means to the Democratic Party. Ridiculous. Throw a stone in DC and try not to hit some one with a little something on the side, and that includes those in the press corps.
And they have the nerve to talk about betrayal of Edwards to the media and his wife -- in that order. Why aren't they more outraged about the betrayal of the White House to get us into a war?
What screwed up priorities.

The hypocrisy is amazing. You hit the nail on the head with many examples of more important issues that David Gregory ought to be spending his time on. The torture issue alone should be enough for the Mass Media to ask what implications will torture have for the Republican party.
MSNBC is the Irish Catholic puritanical network that allows diversity if they have connections like Mrs. Greenspan or Mika B. These folks are out to lunch.
Let down? F*&k you, david gregory, you're a stupid bitch. NO ONE F*&KING CARES.
The only reason any sensible person would 'care' is that it would have ruined his chances had it come to light. Only idiot asshole shills like David Gregory and GOP trolls give a flying fuck about someones extra marital affair.
"And here's my audition tape for a job at Fox News."
David Gregory is a complete tool. It was nice seeing Rachel get the host seat on Race For The White House yesterday - it was almost worth watching.
Why no outrage about McCain having an affair with Cindy while still married to his first wife who he dumped when he came home a war "celebrity"?????
The Great Game
I'm awaiting McCain's explanation of the lobbyist scandal Vicki Iseman.

Most news appears as 15-word tickertapes at the bottom of peoples 36-inch widescreen TVs while that yap about Paris Hilton.
David Gregory = fawning sack of worthless shit. He may as well join the ranks of the puffy, marshmallow man vat-of-vanilla-pudding thrown against the wall with wire spectacles pieces of GOP fascist trash and call it a day.
It really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, except Elizabeth Edwards. I hope everyone one this blog will take the time to honor her by reading her response (above). As usual, she is direct, honest and spot on. She certainly doesn't deserve to relive this episode of her life and to relive it under the predatory scrutiny of the MSM is HELL!
David Gregory dances with Karl Rove; what do you expect? How about the fact that John McCain's own staff had to shield him from a blonde lobbyist because they were worried there was an affair or something was about to happen? Don't hear much about that one anymore. Yeah, John Edwards was a tool in terms of the way he behaved. Big whoop. What does that have to do with the party? Sorry it wasn't a teenaged boy -- the favorite object of male GOP affections.
Fuck the party.
The party is about 35-40% of what's wrong with this country today.
The other party is about 60-65%.
You do realize it's totally symbiotic.
At a town hall in Virginia today, Mike Stark asked McCain point blank if he's always been faithful to Cindy. McCain never answered the question.
That question needs to be asked repeatedly. The MSM will catch on eventually....or they'll just lose interest and report the actual news.
David Gregory drank the Kool-ade.
Now we'll probably be hearing about John McKeating's multiple affairs, right? (chirp chirp)
At least we'' hear about Dumbya's affair with the dead stripper, right? (chimp chimp)
Fuggit. I'm glad we don't have teevee anymore.
Yep, and Didn't McCain himself dump his wife after she was maimed in an accident and left her for the younger more svelte (and very wealthy) Cindy?
David Gregory always struck me as a little closeted.
True, the media focuses on the wrong issues most of the time, and the Edwards affair will get more mileage than it should. BUT...let's be fair and admit that WE go nuts every time a Republican gets busted with his zipper down, and WE harp on it endlessly, so it's no surprise that when a major Democrat gets caught the same way, it gets extra coverage.
Is it important compared to war, energy prices, environmental issues, etc.? No.
Is it right to taint the whole Democratic Party with Edwards' sins? No--though we tend to do that to Republicans, so be fair.
Is it likely that the MSM will suddenly start reporting on Bush's crimes, Congress's failures, and McCain's lies? No...but that doesn't change the fact that this IS a major news story.
Maybe we should remember our words about Edwards the next time a Republican gets caught screwing around--which, let's face it, is a regular happening these days. But if we want the MSM to focus on "real" news instead of Edwards, then we should expect that when a Repug is the sinner-of-the-day.
Paul B. @ 19:
The difference being that Edwards never held himself up as "More Moral Than Thou"
Rider3 @ 15:
Is that the new name for santorum, these days?
An affair is big news only if the politician is a jeebus-lovin' moralizer who makes tons of money from jeebus-lovin' constituents by condemning people who have affairs.
If John Edwards were exploiting poor laborers or foreclosing on the working poor, THAT would be scandalous news. But the screwing around, not so much.
Gregory sucks - apparently. And evidently he enjoys that he sucks.
He's not the first and he won't be the last.
Repuglics -- the party of white doughy bigots, perverts, pedophiles, murderers, war criminals, homophobes and misogynists. And Liars.
Brought to you by the Corporate owned and run Media bobbleheads such as Gregory. Each and every one of them with their pants around their ankles.

Times have changed
Scenario: Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, Mary.Mary hugs him to comfort him.
1957 - In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.
2007 - Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy
Scenario: Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from 4th of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle, blows up a red ant bed.
1957 - Ants die.
2007 - BATF, Homeland Security, FBI called. Johnny charged with domestic terrorism, FBI investigates parents, siblings removed from home, computers confiscated, Johnny's Dad goes on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.
the MSM has been sitting on this story for a REASON.
it's about time for a REVOLUTION.
they have an agenda, how else could they see things so differently????
i'm tired of giving them the benefit of doubt. it seems intentional.
nothing else explains it.....i just don't see how the repugs can exercise such control
unless they made a deal with the devil.....and the is illogical.
the Chinese people don't know anything different, they think the Dalia Lama is bad.
Appropriate discourse for the MSM: football, trivia, patriotism or the lack thereof, baseball, weather, UFOs, the price of gas, dogs with two heads and DEMOCRATIC sexual dalliances. The republicans get a pass on the latter as they are the family values party and consider all leftists/socialists/Keynesians/supporters of the public good as deluded, bohemian, unprincipled wastrels. They will hang Edwards by the balls.
L.A. Confidential @ 24:
FWIW, I've always liked 1957 (despite its faults) a whole lot better than 2007.
How many times has the corporate media talked about McCain's affairs?
IOKIYAR
I think it would be a good idea if everyone emailed CNN, MSNBC and FOX and let them know that McCain has had multiple affairs.
Excellent post John. I'm afraid we're evolutionarily ill suited (on average) to have the same visceral reactions to sexual indiscretions as we do to more "abstract" things like a war that we're not personally invested in. Now if there were a draft, it would be another matter. We just have to keep fighting the good fight knowing that the ill-educated among us will tend to be more driven by their ancient emotions than their higher reasoning abilities.
amen, AMEN, RAmen!
I'm donating more money to this site for this rant!
Keep up the good works being done here!

To bad we've evolved into a lunatic asylum in only 50 short yrs.
How come the wench he was screwing doesn't get any blame?
Polygamy is illegal in the US.
But serial monogamy (with a little extra on the side) is the norm.

It is posts like this one that increasingly cause me to be disappointed in this blog. Every fault of Republicans is cataloged and inventoried, but when a Democrat makes the same mistakes it is glossed over and dismissed. Gregory is right - John Edwards did let me down. I am deeply disappointed bu his behavior, and the fact that I happen to agree with his politics does not lessen my disappointment. Am I supposed to ignore it because McCain did the same thing? Two wrongs don't make a right.
David Gregory knows that he has hitched his wagon to the Republican star and is pushing the Republican Party all the way.
I can't wait until the Democrats take power, and he takes a job with Faux News.
Here's David Gregory from August 5th:
Great perspective John. Good to be reminded of the absurdities from time to time. Appreciated.
L.A. Confidential @ 33:
She SEDUCED to poor weak man. Tsk tsk.
So is David Gregory just slow or does he think he is being really profound and insightful?
Please. Less entertainment. Less infotainment. Less 50/50 "balanced presentation" BS.
Wrong is wrong. Being correct is correct. Fact is fact. Truth is truth.
So far the anthrax, back-dated fake Saddam/Atta letter Cheney likely originated and Pentagon propaganda plants and ploys have not raised anything near the "Oh My!!" John Edwards affair is getting from American political media.
Wha'dya say David? Try a little harder. Please.
They are not paid to be outraged by subversion of the Constitution, the destruction of the democracy, the usurpation of power by the executive.
They are paid to pimp for the stories that will sell tissue paper, or toothpaste or whatever damn thing their sponsors are selling.
They are paid pimps, and they are paid very, very well.
L.A. Confidential @ 33:
Blame? Was she married? Did she violate any laws or her own ethics?
"What screwed up priorities."
Fuck yea!
Blue Lensman @ 42:
Her ex-beau Jan Mcinerney describes her as jaded, cocaine-addled, and sexually voracious.
I would cut and paste and e-mail the above list of newsworthy priorities to all the 24/7 MSM cable news, but I have done it so many times to no avail. MSNBC had me on their VIP polling e-mail survey thing for a long time but I guess they got tired of my diatribes which were very similar to the above post.
Don't confuse them with facts.
David Gregory is a punk as little bitch. Sorry to the female canines around and no offense to you, but that is exactly what the jerk is.
Hardball was right along with the hypocrisy sweepstakes, too. Andrea "I am not judgemental, we knew all along, it's just because he admitted it that now I can be the harpy partisan scold" Mitchell blithely revealing the truth of why the McCain "Vicki Iseman" story never got traction...John and his long-suffering wife Cindy are doing the V-I inoculation tour together....
Jim Warren got cut off at the, um, knees when he tried pointing out that this isn't just a Democratic effect story. It is, and it should be, a story of hubris and power, and that crosses party lines. Unless your cronies in the BBQ media want to pretend it doesn't.
And is there a stoopider "journalist" on the planet than Mike Barnicle? No, I didn't think so.
L.A. Confidential @ 44:

Not everyone is watching The Olympics.
What's up with Gingrich? Let's talk about his affair during the Clinton impeachment. His wife was in the hospital dying when he informed her that he was seeking a divorce! Republicans are such hypocrites!
Blitzer's been on CNN rubbing his nipples all day over this.
It's been one long shit splattered orgy of half truths and breathless conjecture.
L.A. Confidential @ 50:
I blame Monica.
Seth @ 36:
No they don't, but Seth, we're trying to point out how the MSM is focusing on just ONE of those wrongs, and with the one NOT running for the office of the President.
Meanwhile, as the media runs their non-stop bemoaning that John Edwards is all too human and imperfect, guess what they're NOT mentioning?
http://rawstory.com/news/2008/Tape_Top_CIA_officer_confesses_order_0808....
And as the MSM barraged Edwards constantly from a story sourced from the National Enquirer, when was the last time any of them asked GWB if it's true that Laura is checked in to the Mayflower because he's started drinking again?
Just an Old Lady @ 6:
And as I understand it, McCain's ghost-written autobiography gets the dates wrong to make it look like he was already legally separated from his first wife, but the dates on the court papers make it clear that's not true.
Personally, I don't care that much. That sort of thing doesn't affect my vote. But if you consider how crazy the press is getting about the Edwards affair, can you imagine how they'd respond if it came out that Obama had ever cheated on his wife? With that in mind, I think McCain's playboy ways are worth mentioning, just to shut them up about Edwards.
Blue Lensman @ 49:
I wonder if Johns doing toot on the side?
lj @ 51:
It's coded into their souls.
Why isn't David dancing around with Karl Rove?
As far as the network news readers being hypocrites I think the game plan is to keep the horse race going at the cost of objectivity. The horse race puts more butts in the chairs to watch more commercials. Having Obama run away with this thing too early is not as profitable.
L.A. Confidential @ 56:
It does raise questions but not really interesting ones. I am thinking about my donation to Edwards just a tad though.
I know it would never happen in a billion years, but in a Presidential race when both candidates were scrutinized and covered, this would be bad news for McCain as he would have to address the facts of his first marriage.
dada @ 29:
I think it would be a good idea if everyone turned off the news for a while and went outdoors while the weather is still nice.
I remember when CNN debuted and thought 'wow, how cool. Watch the news whenever I'm interested."
Now-a-days, not so much.
Dances with Rove is no expert, no one I respect or admire. I am very depressed about the Edwards story, but PULEESE. Another distraction, driven by Huffington Post, and many others, to pretend that Democrats are the enemy. Gotcha doesn't feed children or stop the war or arrest lying, profiteering contractors or impeach the many people who need to be impeached. So much death, do much suffering all over the world, and every station, every TV program, is harping on this. Is there something in the water on the east coast that makes people so stupid? We are nearing WWIII and nobody in the US even knows it. Jesus F****ng Christ. We are not that stupid.
If David Gregory says something it's about as valid as if a high school debater said it. The only thing MSNBC is good for is Countdown, I'm so tired of the rest of their crap.
It seems to me that the Media are the ones sex obsessed. Craig, Clinton, etc. etc. etc. Maybe if the high paid news models (and yes I am refering to the men mostly here) had something to do other than stare at porn all day they wouldn't be so sex obsessed, and might, might, be able to focus on something else.
Ol Democrat @ 64:
I couldn’t agree more… One great thing about the Olympics is the Morning Jealousy
will be off the air and it will give CNN Morning show time to get their act together, although I did watch them this morning and it was pretty good. They just need to learn to relax and not be so conservative.
David Gregory assisted in lying this country into committing war crimes. What did you expect from him now? Honesty?
abarts @ 62:
That would be because they don't cover the news. They've got Beck on Headline "News" 10 hours a day and David Gergen telling Edwards (or any other Democrat) what they should do the rest of the time. We are now a fascist country--just like China--exactly like China in the surveillance and internet monitoring and control of message. The government will snatch any story--missing blond women, Democratic trysts (but not Republican), Paris (but not McSame), and stupid pet tricks to tell people they have watched "the News." Orwell was way before his time.
Talking heads like Gregory specialize in speaking in code and like to push the subliminal buttons of the non-thinking audience.
Typical Rovian tactic.
"David Gregory just said young people were inspired by (EDWARDS) and are let down…and questioned whether it will have 'broader implications for the (DEMOCRATIC) party' during the election."
There once was a man named McCain,
Who knew a man "Bush" as McSame.
'Cain's wife was a-hurtin' when her ride went a-flirtin' with obstacles that bent her car's frame.
While mending at home, she stayed all alone,
While McCain gave his mistress the bone.
His lust to caress, a wealthy heiress, meant beer bucks left no need for loans.
So wifey was dumped, as Blondie got humped,
While illusions of character were trumped.
So the Maverick got laid, while abandoned the wife stayed,
As McCain grabbed at all things but blame.
As he eyes the White House, some think him a louse,
While beer money fuels his private plane.
MY BRAIN HURTS. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE FINISH THIS FOR ME? :-)
abarts @ 62:
I don't watch the "news," but I do know Wolf Blitzer and the rest of these clowns are getting a hard on over this story while not having mentioned McCain's affairs once.
I detect hysterics from the Dem ideologues over extramarital sexual affairs. Far more than was ever exhibited for the unconstitutional affairs that have been happening - torture, killings, you name it. And far more than the unprincipled caving by Dem politicians over these matters.
JFK had affairs, as did probably every single good president we ever had. Yes, affairs are not a good thing, but they are a human weakness. And they are not a crime. Let's focus on the crimes, shall we, hysterical Dem puritan ideologues?
the press doesn't care that bush and cheney
are dry humping the working class of America
for everything they have including their
civil rights. but let someone the an insignificant
lie or omission of petty reality and they get
outraged. FUCK THEM !!

abarts @ 62:
So true so true, Wolf prefers to smoke a joint while he watches
Nicole Belle @ 54, give the lady a cigar! Troubles for the GOP pull out a sex scandal to take people minds off it. Impeachment is WAY past due!
Republicans are fixated on sex--probably because they can't do it right. So they expose other peoples issues so as to cover up their own perverted sexual exploits. Frankly, I don't think John Edwards owes anybody but his family an explanation for whatever he did or did not do. It is their business, certainly not for public consumption. But the media grabs on to it instead of the real problems. What a bunch of losers. The press should do some real reporting of issues that affect Americans--John Edwards sex life is irrelevant.
"While McCain gave his mistress the bone."
Wasn't Whitman who first explored this theme?
Why expect the 'media' to cover any real news like crime of the executive branch when there's a juicy sex 'scandal' to cover.
pinkobait @ 77, no he wasn't. There are many examples of the theme being explored in early English writings. And I'm sure it was being explored earlier then that.
When I see the responses over at the DailyKos, I just want to leave the Dem party sooner than I had originally planned. These are the same worshippers of the Dem party strategists, and apologists for all of the crappy decisions the campaign made (like FISA and telecom immunity), and yet they are outraged over something every goddamned politician probably does (and all of the "good" pols I can think of did).
Elizabeth Edwards has got to be one of the classiest women alive. What a roll model for women.
What do I care what he does in his private life. Is it going to affect me in any way that he has had an affair? The answer to that question is NO, so why don't we just put it to rest and get on with our lives. The Republicans have no room to be talking. How many have been in the news for their miss deeds? I want to know what the candidates will do for this country not who slept with whom. Do I really care? NO
Terrible @ 79:
Actually Chaucer could be quite the randy old bugger.
Nicole Belle @ 54:
Well said Nicole!
We have the White House being cited for committing an impeachable offense by ordering the CIA to forge a document that led us into a war that has cost the lives of millions of people and bankrupted this nation.
We have Russia going to war with Georgia in a conflict that threatens to involve the US and its NATO allies.
And all we can hear from the MSM is a story about the private indiscretion of an ex-candidate for political office?????
American Journalism has reduced itself to the level of a tabloid... what is next? Bat Boy found in St. Louis?
What are the broader implications of NBC being in the tank for McCain't?
Do the corporate masters of NBC want more wars for the profit of General Electric?
A lot of the public goes along for these stupid shenanigans anyways. Why should the minority thinkers even try to help the majority losers who fall for it. Just make the money and leave them to rot.
pinkobait @ 83, yeah he could! An interesting related link:
http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?search=fuck&searchmode=none
Ok, I know I am going to get trashed for this, but here goes:
All this week the "MSM" has been fretting about Senator Obama taking a vacation in Hawaii. Mr. Edwards is a prime-candidate for U.S. Attorney General (possibly even a vacant Supreme Court seat).
Senator Obama knew that the Sunday talk shows won't be discussing the Olympics, but will continue on about his vacation. He also knew that he needed something to take that off the table, thus, Mr. Edwards fell on his sword and "came clean" about his affair. What better way to re-route the focus of the talking heads?
This was brilliant politics that I didn't think Senator Obama had in him. Bravo.
Rand @ 86:
I'll take someone who's getting a little something on the side than an idiot savant who has no moral compunction about sending thousands of military to their death to line his oil company buddies' pockets.
But then again, I possess a moral compass, something I've found in sadly short supply with Bush supporters.
We can all thank god that Obama has the morals of a saint! :)
Phoenix Justice @ 89, how many "McCain Points" for that?
There's a reason the media jizzes themselves when a Democrat gets caught in a sexcapade but not so much when a Republican does - it's called "the element of surprise".
IdahoMoe @ 93, WOOO HOOO a "McCain Points" tire gauge!
Edwards had his affair. Fine, it's a private matter. But he shouldn't be running for president knowing that it would likely come out. He and his wife now want their privacy. Great, but shouldn't they have stayed out of the presidential race if that's what they wanted. Was it a private matter when he lied about it continually? Is that who we wanted in the White House, another Bush?
Stop all the bull about others who have done similar or worse things. We should not be judging things by the worst event but should try to have a better code so that we recognize. Clinton lied and had sex in the White House, do we then say that's all right and that is the basis upon which we judge people. Bush lied and had people tortured, do we say that's all right and use that as a new basis upon which we judge people.
Edwards took his private life and made it public and told everyone how devoted he was to his wife and family values which is given lie to by his mistake and the payments by his political PAC, which he did not know about, wink, wink, to his girl friend. about it. Do we want that type of person for president? If you do, fine. I don't.
What "broader implications"? Because of a two-year-old affair by a PRIVATE citizen who holds no public office and, as the media which is now beating him up always reminded us, was not a "major candidate" to begin with?
The only folks who will make hay over this are psuedo-Puritans like Sean Hannity (who kisses Gingrich's behind quarters every night on TV), and the thrice-married Rush Limbaugh.
Why no outrage about McCain having an affair with Cindy while still married to his first wife who he dumped when he came home a war “celebrity”?????
Yeah. And what about that?
Once again, David Gregory frames the issue asking how Obama is affected. Every subject to Gregory affects Obama.
Terrible @ 94:
Thanks for proving my point. From day one everyone here has known that I don't support Senator Obama and that I was a Senator Clinton supporter.
With that being said, I am actually giving praise to Senator Obama for playing politics the way politics is supposed to be played. Look, Mr. Edwards could have admitted this affair at any time, but he waited for the moment that it would take heat off of Senator Obama, per the Obama campaign's decision. It is the price he pays for the U.S. Attorney General nomination.
Everyone, even Senator Obama has to pay a price to be a politician. You sell your soul to get the office you truly want and don't think that Senator Obama isn't selling his.
llyonnoc @ 102:
So don't vote for anyone like him. Just glad people like you were clueless about JFK when he was running against Nixon. Clueless about FDR when he was running against Alfred Landon.

You absolutely nailed this one, John.
Young people have learned a valuable lesson; infidelity is wrong, unless you are a Republican.
I admire the timing. If this is still a story on Race for the White House on Monday, then even Rachel Maddow won't be able to rescue that show from irrelevance.

And, dear Rand @ 86, you are more than welcome to him. Please take him far away.

dada @ 106:
Well put my friend, well put.
david gregory? david gregory? the 'journalist'(ahem), the guy that let the world watch him shimmy with the most odious, slimy, bit of rubbish anywhere(rove)? this is his way of reaching those chit-chatty, lip-flapping yokels of the g.o.p. that loves a good talking point-when they need a little help, the pundits.
These are excerpts of an article I recently wrote, mostly to send out to Republicans (rather than preach to the choir). Because the article's so long I could only include parts of it. Please give it a read:
".....That being said, I have an issue I’d like to throw out as food for thought. At first glance it might appear to be relatively minor, especially compared to everything that’s been going on regarding this administration and all their shenanigans, but I think with careful reflection you’ll find it’s quite significant.
It concerns a statement President Bush has been making the entire time in office. With smug reassurance he has often stated that it’s his job to “protect the American people.” He has repeated these words while defending his administration’s policies, the Middle Eastern campaigns and his war on terrorism, that it’s his job to “protect the American people.” In fact, just several weeks ago he once again concluded his message with this line while talking to the Whitehouse press corp. about the FISA bill. For seven years I waited for someone to confront him on this claim, searching for a newspaper article, a news story, a pundit or a politician to point out its utter falsehood.
Below are the following words, the Presidential oath of office spoken by every President since Washington promising to ‘preserve, protect and defend the United States Constitution.’
I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. **
Read those words carefully. ….preserve, protect and defend the Constitution…
Nowhere does it say “people.”
It is with bitter irony that as we watched Bush and Cheney protecting the American people for seven years they were, at the same time, dismantling the US Constitution. With the complicity of Congress (a majority of Republicans and a slight majority of Democrats), this administration pushed through three blantantly unconstitutional bills:
....The Military Commisions Act, The Patriot Acts, The FISA Amendments Act of 2008......
.....The groundwork has been laid for future Presidents to infringe upon the rights of Americans and non-Americans alike. And that is the real danger, not Bush and Cheney, but the legacy they have left behind, the foundation they have created for potential future dictatorships. It is a very risky adventure indeed for Americans to assume they are protected from the charge of “terrorism” and thus not subject to the punishments listed in the laws above. Trusting the President without the protection of constitutional law is very foolish. The Founding Fathers knew this.
Equally disturbing is the complacency of the Democratic party........(article continues).
Rider3 @ 15:
He's like the rest of the syncophants... got paid off big time to keep his brain switched off and sold his soul to the devil... Dick Cheney and his boys.
Only an ignoramus would connect the party with the private affairs of a man and a woman, even if it was an adulterous affair. Now, if, as a member of congress, he'd voted for discriminatory legislation against gays and was then found to have engaged in illegal homosexual acts but denied any wrongdoing, we might have to connect the dots and denounce him as a hypocrite. But to then say that the entire party was hypocritical for their stance against equal rights for gays as the result of the hypocritical and homophobic actions of one or two or three or even a thousand or more of the closeted homosexual members of that party, that's going too far.
david gregory is always on the lookout for something that could hurt obama. his line of questioning shows it. it's always "is this a problem for obama?" or "people think obama is arrogant and presumptuous, is this a problem?"
he is one of part of the white house press who bought hook line and sinker the administration stance to go to war. he is a parrot. his like doesnt go deeper into issues and is satisfied with what is fed them.
the iraq war was NOT necessary. AL QAEDA was NOT in iraq when the u.s. invaded it.
9/11 could have been avoided but bush and cheney wanted to go to war.
phoenix justice, your analysis is like 1 + 1 = 5. your argument is flawed
it is to edwards' benefit that he do it at this time because of the olympics and the weekend. he knew that he was cornered and that it was a matter of time before this explodes. the little undeniable tidbits have been surfacing that tend to prove that he had an affair (his undeniable presence at the B Hills Hilton, the removal of traces relating to Hunter, the reticence of his staff etc).
there is nothing the matter about obama taking a vacation so there is nothing to fear. 1) mccain rarely campaigns on weekends so what is a week off for obama? he certainly deserves it. the media cannot fault him for it and they HAVE NOT faulted him for it. 2) it is very hard to compete with the olympics so why fight it? he might as well get a much needed break.
that obama is a savvy politician is undisputed. he beat the clintons by dint of organization, hardwork, discipline and great strategy. but to say that obama dictates to a democrat with stature overturns this premise. it is not savvy politics to risk to ruffle substantial feathers (not only edwards' but those of other democrats) at this point in the game, and though obama is a pragmatist, he is sensible enough not to put undue pressure to a man already having a hard time. it is better strategy to allow the man who has the intelligence and the common sense to do the right thing to do what is right/necessary. edwards does not need a heavy hand.
i do concede that the obama campaign knew that sooner or later this was going to happen and were a bit worried when this issue will come to a head. but to say they dictated on edwards is not borne by the circumstances nor by the way obama operates.
The Sheet Smelling Media Is At It Again
Ask yourself, do you inquire about your co-workers sex life or extra marital affairs? Does it concern you who your boss sleeps with? Would you wait outside a house, a hotel, or in the back of a car to find out who is having sex? If you did, you would be considered a pervert. This is in affect what the media does when they play got-ya with celebrity's sex life.
I don't give a shit who some one is f_ _ king, S _ _ king or playing patty cake with. It is their life, and I will give them respect because I want the same. If they are not messing with children, they have an adult right to be left alone.
What the media does amounts to sheet smelling. Most of them have the same kind of sexual habits as the very people they smear. If America stop playing the got-ya game with this strange obsession with the media, maybe there will a true transition of news focus to doing what they were created to do: REPORT THE DAM NEWS.
Joseph
David Gregory is a D-bag and today just iced it for me.
I agree with the post as a whole. What the hell. This is not even on the list of top 20 most important things that have happened this week. Normally stuff that comes out on a Friday afternoon, particularly at this time of year, is not talked about or dissected like this has been.
Give the Edwards their peace and fight for the things that really matter, like the destruction of the Constitution in the Bush/Cheney administration. That is the BEST way to honor Elizabeth Edward and her children. (and if you aren't rabidly angry at him, John too.If she can forgive him, who are any of us to be angry at him, really? )
This is ridiculous. Edwards' situation has nothing to do with Bush betraying America on Iraq. He screwed up on his own terms. You can't drag the media's complicity in the build up to war into this issue. They actually held off for a long time before he admitted to what he did. I have no sympathy for a guy who cheated on his WIFE WHO HAS CANCER! Screw him! The worst part about this whole thing is that he casts into doubt his motives involving the poor, which I'd like to believe are actually pure. This story is about a man who was corrupted by power and has NOTHING to do with the war in Iraq. Give it a rest.
P.S. This woman is a lot less attractive that elizabeth. No sympathy for him. None.
I always as a DEMOCRAT thaught that we as a party stoped at the BED ROOM DOOR and let the REPUBLICANS AND the CORPORATE CONTROLED MEDIA be the WHIFLE SNIFERS, that is the ones that would like to always to Smell Edwards Shorts and his Wifes Panties. There is to much that Bush and his Crime Family and Karl Rove(TURD BLOSSOM) have done to the CONSTITUTION and the BILL of RIGHTS for me or any DEMOCRAT to become a WHIFLE SNIFER. I say we as Democrats should still stop at the BED ROOM DOOR and let the CORPORATE CONTROLED MEDIA and the REPUBLICAN party have at being the WHIFLE SNIFERS. Just me.
We need to start hitting the news organizations hard! These so called newsmen are little more than shills and propagandists for the fascists in this country, and it is high time we start calling them for what they are: worthless whores!
Never before have we had the means at our disposal like we do today. The Internet and email have made it easy to scream at them instantly, and blogging has made it easy to get the word out to enable us to immediately notify each other to the illegal, improper, and immoral actions of elected officials, and the failure of our national press to adequately inform the country about the news that MATTERS.
John Edwards actions in 2006 are not important. What he does with his body is of no concern to me, and it shouldn't matter to anyone outside his family. I sympathize with his wife, and God bless her for forgiving him, and God damn anyone who sits in judgment upon him. Those of us who are Christian need to remember that we are not the judges of his morality or sinfulness. End of story.
There are however, numerous issues of vital concern to us all. They need to be properly presented to the American people so we can make an informed decision in the November election. That is the responsibility of the press. It is not their job to help the rethuglicans sling mud.
Click my name for easy access to email addresses to numerous entities in this country, and start emailing people about issues that concern us all. I do, and I will continue to do that just to let off steam if for no other reason. Perhaps it won't do any good, but it certainly can't hurt!
David Gregory is one of the most disgusting, vile, ugly and nasty ass, individuals they could ever find to give a political talk show too. He Joe Scarboro, Lou Dobbs and Wolf Blitzer are cut from the same old nasty snot rag.
They are on a crusade to humiliate Senator Obama, in that every dame time anyone does anything, they will ask the question, does this hurt Obama, as if they are always searching for some bit of hope to derail this man. Or that Obama should be responsible for all these people that screw up. They don't feel the need to ask when the massive numbers of right wing lunatics, screw up, if it should hurt McCain, that's for sure.
Today he deliberately ran that old foul disgusting video of Democrats, praising that old disgusting 73 year old McCain, yet he deliberately avoided the come back response from the Democrats. In fairness, the idiots on Fox News, did the same thing, however it is expected of them to be the swines they are, but these idiots, on MSNBC, especially this disgusting freak, David, that is so eager to be on Air American and knows we don't want that bull shit on that liberal station.
They need to tell this fool to learn how to really be fair and balanced. or keep his ugly ass off that radio station. Those that watch his silly ass, can hear enough of that distracting crap on TV.
Now Air America has graciously allowed this sick degenerate, to take up an hour of air time of the Rachel Maddow show each day. Our peace is disrupted, each day by his disgusting gibber on what was once a really pleasing few hours of truth, we will never get from national TV.
I don't understand Mark Green anymore. He has fired many of the best radio host, he had and now he is bartering this wonderful radio station for his own self serving needs
of getting his own old stupid, ass kissing self on TV. That's exactly what this crap is about. Tit, for tat.
They will never call David Gregory, exactly what the hell he is, because they are so dame eager to be on TV, at any dame cost. It's the reason I discontinued my premium service.
This is a dame sell out, if there ever was one, and I call it exactly as I see it. We have a few more months to put up with these stupid bastards all over our media, like the fleas they are, and there is going to be some serious remedy for what pains all these cheap freaks. They will not be so eager to spew the kind of crap they spew, without the Bush administration, to pat them on their pink asses.
Why can't these people be somewhere close to Randi Rhodes and Mike Malloy, who they know not to even call on, because they would never sell their soles to these monsters. There is going to be plenty of need for good anchors on our national TV, if they would just be patient, or follow Ed Schlitz, who would rather swim in a sea of snakes, then to allow these ass holes to lead him down these deep dark Rodes that MSNBC, is leading these people. You get a lick in, every now and then, kind of shit.
One liberal quest, I wont mention the name, said that when he agrees to go on these political talk shows. they hound and hound and hound him to follow the scripts and not to stray. They don't want you to stray to far left. Not at all if he can help it. Your supposed to just sit there like a dame fool and take it all in, or go along with the bullshit, or you can just keep your liberal ass off TV.
The down side to not following instructions is that you will not be invited again. This is what our national media has become. A bunch of caged animals, paid to do harm to their own people and country, (i want to apologize to the animals).
This is simply bullshit
I wrongly assumed the affair BS was just that. More reslug bs spread in an early attempt to smear edwards in case he was considered for the VP spot.
Now it appears as though the reslugs weren't outright lying for once. Which is as much a shock as the entire affair thing is.
However this post makes an excellent point on the issues. That reslugs and the current dictatorship have committed multiple crimes and gutted the constitution of the US in pursuit of personal gain. And that's not even to mention the illegal occupation of a foreign country they lied us into.
But we all know what the news is going to be about for the next 6 to 8 weeks, john edwards' affair and the olympics.
Thanks msm for making sure the current dictators can continue their crimes without scrutiny.
Articles like this one and so many found here at Crooks and Liars MUST be submitted to
newspapers across the country.
WAKE UP AMERICA!
VOTE FOR OBAMA!
So what have we learned here folks?
Democrats can't keep it in their pants with women and republicans can't keep it in their pants with other men.
Story over; move on. Nothing to see here.
Americans are always titillated by sex scandals, and of course the MSM will try to get maximum mileage, keeping in mind the double standard always applied to Democrats. I know affairs happen ALL the time, and they happen to good decent people. However, I am disappointed in John Edwards. The timing is terrible. It happened while he was running for President, and close enough to the election to be used as fodder by the Rethuglicans. Clinton couldn't manage to control his impulses while in the WH. Do these guys actually believe they'll never get caught, especially given the fact they're so high profile.
Spicegal @ 125:
That's what I was thinking. Edwards couldn't even get a haircut without everbybody knowing about it. How did he think he would get away with this?
I am amused that the McCain lovin' Pimps and Hacks that pollute the Main Stream Media are hyperventalating over the admission of John Edwards that he did the nasty with the Other Woman.
Some of the Brainiacs in the Press have been scratching their heads wondering if Obama's campaign would suffer over the disgrace of a fellow Democrat?
WTF? The guy that should be worried is John McCain. Not only does McCain share the same first name with Edwards, he shares his love of the "strange." Gee, McCain met his current wife and started an illicit affair with her while still married and living with Mrs. McCain #1.
But, the Whores in the MSM can't be addressing that can they? The bottom feeders can only obsess on the frailties of Democrats. Hell, even Newt Gindrich is blovating on the subject! You know, the same Newt that served his first wife with divorce papers when she was in the hospital cancer ward?
Rasputin @ 84:
The MSM gave just as much coverage to Larry Craig and Mark Foley, not to mention Elliot Spitzer. The operative word in news is "new." They're not covering McCain's affair because it's not new, not because of any political bias.
Meanwhile, notice the double-standard in your own language. Edwards is "all too human," but the MSM is a problem for not covering McCain's affairs?
As for the tabloid nature of the MSM, I absolutely agree. The focus should be on the larger issues. But let's not kid ourselves, liberal blogs are guilty of the same sin. For every post on this blog about one of Bush's warcrimes, there's another about a Republican sex scandal. Lately, this blog has turned from Bush-bashing to McCain-bashing with equal fervor. I'm not a McCain supporter, but I do respect the man. While I think Obama would make the better president, I don't think it's possible for McCain to be as bad as Bush if he tried. But, like the MSM, this blog (and every other) has a narrative it wants to push. Nuance be damned.
My point is that I often see different standards applied to Republicans and Democrats for the same sins. Fox news does it and so do liberal blogs. Ultimately, the Republicans' downfall was because they did not live up to their own standards: fiscal responsibility, "family values," limited government, etc. Are Democrats going to make the same mistake? When Edwards doesn't live up to his own standards, are Democrats going to dismiss it the way the Republicans did? Then they will eventually suffer the same fate.
Edwards blew it and disappointed us. It would be wise for liberals to be harsher on him than conservatives. Leadership is as leadership does.
it's time Dems etc wake up- BROADER IMPLICATIONS in the traditional media are determined by the party that has the biggest soapbox. that would be the GOP and its talk radio monopoly, which reaches 50-70MIL Americans plus families and friends of those people. and its a monopoly, which means the blowhards don't even have to get the opinions of the people they lie about from their giant soapboxes or even that big majority of people they delude themselves into thinking they represent. the uncontested repetition creates a red velvet bandwagon the lazy TV talking heads are used to riding. bandwagon riders know the the talking points and oneliners have been prechewed all over the country by the time they regurgitate them, and they also know there are some things they shouldn't talk about lest their bosses get bombarded by thousands of letters and calls from limbaugh and sons irate listeners.
This may have been mentioned, but with a White House press corps filled with the likes of David Gregory, is it any wonder the Bush Administration has gotten away with murder? Literally...
Gregory's "Race for the White House" is an absurd joke.
I saw a interview with David Gregory and Nicole Wallace from the McCain Campaign/Bush White Horse Souse. It was the worst ******* "Interview" I've seen in my 33 years. Just ******* horrible. Gregory is goofy looking, and a Zionist Hoodlum. After the inane interview I saw yesterday on a day off work, it is no wonder that some people in the U.S. Homeland are suffering terribly, terribly from the Cognitive Dissonance. The Red State Blah-gers who listen to Rush Limbaugh click on Drudge watch BillO and Sean ******* Hannity on the Fox Nothing Channel, who believe that Barack H. Obama is a secret Muslim from Al Qaeda in Iran, whose wife is "Really" proud of her country, who sometimes doesn't wear a flag lapel pin made in China, and actually adheres to the correct protocols for the "Pledge of Alligence", is going make this country Muslim. Never mind that John Sidney McCain, our eleder statesman in this election is running a very, very, very juvinille campaign. Obama comes off so cool, so Presidential. It must drive McCain batty. As for David Gregory I fail why he along with the rest of the pressitutes should not be "brought to justice" along with Bush, Cheney, Pelosi, Military Brass for war crimes against humanity like the Naazis were.
Day after day the editorials will kill Edwards. TV
will do their job on this guy with FOX leading the
parade of hypocrites. Radio, Forget it. So how in
blazes do we get out the news that McCain is
a womanizer & a skunk.It's a tough job but let's
give it a try. This high road is a killer that will
elect another Republican goof. ;-(
Seth Says: Is a Republican troll. Read his post
carefully. He loves McCain & is a liar who does a
poor job trying the old double talk dance. Up yours,
Seth.
you said it, brother.
I would love the reporters to ask "pots" John McCain and Newt Gingrich to comment on this ("kettle" John Edwards), you know they're going to ask Barack Obama about it.
I am really bummed that this happened. It doesn't change my mind, because I would still vote for John Edwards it is that simple.
Peace,
djsquared
john i love ya but i'm calling you to task.
you said:
"It will get the Anna Nicole Smith/Brett Favre treatment for a while now.."
i suppose, suggesting that adultery and producing bastard children is merely a tabloid suitable situation, trivial and just needing time to fade, and in addition, in today's culture is a matter best left to the privacy of the Edwards family.
firstly john you're a "child" in a manner of speaking of the 60's-70's-mid 80's as am i. not birth date, but in a formative sense. it's all over your music posts. let's not quibble.
let's take a trip with mr. peabody and sherman thru the wayback machine shall we?
back in '84 i still had a white hot hatred of Nixon, and Reagan i *knew* was going to annoy the heck out of me so i had a vision that things could be better if we but got involved and pitched in for the common good. my assessment at the time of Mondale was , although he was a smart likable fellow he too had the "carter curse": no charisma and the domestic political savvy of a shriner. so i joined the Gary Hart campaign as a volunteer. worked my butt off for that man. i was young and starry eyed i guess.
we all know what happened next. the media picked up on rumors about "irregularities" in his private life. now, even back then the msm was somewhat loath to delve into family matters of candidates and government officials *if they weren't applicable to the office they held*. Sen. Hart in response to the rumors played the "bonehead" card, and essentially *dared* the msm to follow him and "scope him out". well they did, and he ended up with "rice" all over his face...or rather a wonderful picture of Gary and Donna Rice on his boat the *monkey business* with Donna sitting on his lap killed his campaign.
Mondale got the nomination, his campaign sucked he lost and we got Reagan.
8 damn years of bedtime for bonzo, and the sowing of the neocon seeds.
fast forward to today.
it *still* stings to this day. i'd like nothing better than to shake Sen. Hart by the lapels and yell; "what were you thinking?!?"
Hart and Edwards, are *not * like Anna Nicole Smith or Brett Favre. when you elect to enter the arena of presidential politics or high office, for better or for ill, you are literally directly affecting the well being the entire planet and it's populace.
vast numbers of people, effort, resources, and money are affected by the candidate's words and actions.
Edwards *screwed up* by having an affair and here's the kicker...by being boneheaded enough to think it wouldn't matter. especially in today's poisonous partisan climate.
for that and that alone he's not fit to be president. it's unforgivably, naive and stupid.
he also by default put himself over all he many people who counted on him.
dammit...i wanted him as vp too.
one thing i know about the msm: make the last scandal before the election a democratic scandal: fitting for a public with the shortest attention span in the world.
John Edwards is not a front for big business. It is not a democratic administration that is operating a plutocracy out of the White House. John Edwards is not moralizing to people based on his personal life and using it as wedge issue in elections. To be fair and accurate let us be factual. The fact is the the main stream media is owned by 6 corporations and that is not fair or representative of our society.
Yea, you stupid ass bastard. You will continue to use the public airwaves to spew, cheap shots, distortions and lies at Democrats, especially Obama. That's all the hell you are good for. The sad things for you is that it will not help McCain, no matter what you all claim this weeks bogus polls show. He's going down.
Yes Edwards lied. His lies are a real problem for his wife, not American people. It was good to find out , yet unlike you folks, we don't require the 24/7 treatment of the shit, when we have people losing their homes, jobs, the high cost of gas at the pumps, a criminal in the White House, and on and on.
Yes we all know that you fools will continue the so called Anna Nicole treatment as you say that you will. It's your show and by golly, you can do what the hell you want, for now.
It is a dame shame that you are so stupid, you can't understand the damage that shows like yours and Fox News are doing to the well being of people in this country. Why would you care, when you are being paid, the big bucks to screw us, as if you and your own dame family don't live here also. You think it's cute to have people suffering as they are to make ends meet. You folks would sell your own kids, for a dame dime.
Working as close to the dame White House as you have been privileged to do, I know dame well, you of many of those foolish anchors, know that the consistent distractions and over all cover ups, of vital information is dangerous, yet, you sit your lousy ass up on that show, day after day and do it anyhow. Cause you get paid for it and you can.
You know that McCain is an old, disgusting, evil ass, sick man, that is not only not good to be President, but not really any good in the dame Senate, yet you consistently lie and cover up for this fool. Not just you but the entire national media is on the right wing pay roll of distractions. We are on to your stupid asses.
I want you to know that I don't get paid as you do, to do what I do. I do it for the pleasure of watching people like you squirm, and get pissed, because you know that more people tune into this web site and others, then would be interested in watching you. And if you think these web sites are bad for you, you need to be privilidged to the millions and millions of emails, passing all over the internet, about your ass. It would make even you sick.
Some of us are just not for sale, at any cost. We really do love our country. I left my good paying Federal Employment, just to do this full time, for people like your ass.
I said it before and I will say it again. Air America should remove your disgusting ass from their air waves. They have clearly lost a lot of credibility with liberal listeners, while you are on their air time. It simply makes us sick to here you get on that show and carry the same old bull shit, you sell to unsuspecting viewers of your TV show and I flip the shit off, soon as I hear your voice.
You lying ass bastard. Why the hell do you not address the real reason you have been attacked?. You wont go there because everything you were charged with is the dame truth. You have to spin it, as if people cannot see through your ugly ass.
I want you to know in NO uncertain terms. YES THE HELL WE CAN.
webegeeks @ 120:
You are so right to say that we ought to blast the hell out of these fools. They make a daily thing out of distracting us from all this evil truth, and protecting liars, and crooks from their evil deeds.
There are millions and millions of us, yet we allow these few fools to just do so much damage in this country. The hold world is watching us allow a few fools do what they do, that effects all of us.
I'm not a Republican, I'm registered independent but have always voted Democrat. I am also an Edwards fan. I just don't understand the logic: John Edwards cheats, therefore David Gregory is a jerk? Sounds like Bill O'Reilly logic to me.
