Forget ‘Text Messaging,’ McCain to Announce Veep Pick by Telegraph
Is there one single policy that the conservatives advocate that the majority of Americans agree with?
I know they scare people into certain "issues" but I highly doubt there is one policy that the majority of Americans prefer the Repugs to Dems.
I think the medical name for that Conservative Hate Virus is "class warfare." It's time that 98% of this country finally fought back.
One of the Reagan myths is that he single handedly ended the cold war. That it wasn't 40 years of containment that did it, and the inherent bankruptcy of Soviet Communism, but instead RR's belligerence. Well I've always felt that this myth was not only wrong, but dangerous.
And Bush probably is one of the few Republicans who actually believes it. Think about it, If our troops were not bogged down in Iraq, this nitwit in the White House now would have our army -- right now as we speak -- shooting at Russians in Georgia.
This is the danger in actually believing the right wing talking point that RR won the cold war. Personally, I think this is one of the myths that reality based people need to continue to fight. It could lead to WW3.

One of the fear factors that they use is the Christian values issue. Most people fear the fact that even if they don't live the Christians values life, they don't want to admit that they don't and they certainly don't want others to recognize their failings.
What a fickle hurricane Fay has turned out to be. I wonder how many of the the people who left Key West decided to stay in south Florida? Moving slowly over land, Fay is bringing much need rain for the Everglades and aquifers. The question now is whether Fay will regain strength from the Atlantic and slam back ashore or what?
The National Weather Service has flood, hurricane, and tornado watches for my neck of the woods tonight, even though it has yet to rain here in the Oldest City. Since my cat is outside right now I need to stay awake until he comes back in. For the moment he is ignoring my calling but with a Tropical Storm/Hurricane heading this way I want him inside.
So open threaders, get something going to keep me awake, for my cat's sake!
Bush's fudging of the EPA air pollution laws is declared illegal in court. Another major bank is expected to collapse soon. Eighteen Cali hospitals were fined for wretched service. So much for those lawsuits being "frivolous". The Army finds another way to destroy-this time with lazers.

28 YEARS LATER
Hmm... Can you make a horror documentary?
Why is everyone referring to Barack Obama as the Manchurian Candidate?
The reference, and I double checked to make sure my memory wasn't fuzzy, refers to a soldier of a respected family who is captured, brainwashed, and later activated to take down the government for the commies.
Gee, it sounds like McCain has a better chance of being the Manchurian Candidate.
GOPnot4me @ 1:
I am too. The Obama campaign needs to be vigorously attacking the McCain on a daily basis on THIS DISASTROUS ECONOMY PUT IN PLACE BY THE REPUBLICANS! We're talking no holds-barred, raging attacks!
Like when McCain's campaign made that stupid, arrogant remark about this being just a recession in people's heads-- Obama needs to brutally attack McCain's campaign on a daily basis because of that, without mercy! Bring up real-world examples, anecdotes, of people suffering due to the high inflation. People who have been laid off. People who have lost their homes due to foreclosure. Make this about the economy! And hit the McCain campaign about it every single day, turn their words against them, use surrogates-- just hit the McCain campaign hard!
Bush Administration Denies McCain Was Ever Tortured
"In all the discussion of John McCain's recently recovered memory of a religious epiphany in Vietnam, one thing has been missing. The torture that was deployed against McCain emerges in all the various accounts. It involved sleep deprivation, the withholding of medical treatment, stress positions, long-time standing, and beating. Sound familiar?
According to the Bush administration's definition of torture, McCain was therefore not tortured."

Great pic, drifty.
Isn't the case of modern day (neo-)conservatism moreover about 40 years later? Nixon really did have a major influence on partisan politics and games. If not, then perhaps what is really suspicious and hurting Reagan's legacy the most is the Iran-Contra, despite he seemed to get away with it. No one ever mentioned impeachment during the Reagan years for that.
Still, with two Bushes and McSame hoping to be next in line for "compassionate conservatism", it's disturbing that Obama isn't ahead by a larger lead like he should be if citizens were more well-informed about their government and not have a FOX News be a mouthpiece for them. GOPnot4me is right for making telling suspicions on the polls.

You didn't get this from me, but use it as you will. Is it just me -- as a Republican knowing how we've played this game before -- or should there be genuine puzzlement why Obama isn't unleashing Democratic veterans (Jim Webb, Jack Reed, John Kerry, BOB Kerrey perhaps, etc. Some Democratic generals, whatever) to go after McCain on this "cross in the dirt" stuff? I mean, if there was one issue tailor-made for "Swift-Boat" payback, I can't think of anything else.

Eight years ago, then Governor George W. Bush revealingly joked about his backers at the 2000 Al Smith Dinner. "This is an impressive crowd - the haves and the have-mores," Bush said, adding, "Some people call you the elites; I call you my base." With his own quip Saturday night that "$5 million" is his definition of "rich," John McCain made no mistake that he is Bush's natural heir.
Why I Will Not Vote for John McCain
Phillip Butler | March 27, 2008
As some of you might know, John McCain is a long-time acquaintance of mine that goes way back to our time together at the U.S. Naval Academy and as Prisoners of War in Vietnam. He is a man I respect and admire in some ways. But there are a number of reasons why I will not vote for him for President of the United States.
When I was a Plebe (4th classman, or freshman) at the Naval Academy in 1957-58, I was assigned to the 17th Company for my four years there. In those days we had about 3,600 midshipmen spread among 24 companies, thus about 150 midshipmen to a company. As fortune would have it, John, a First Classman (senior) and his room mate lived directly across the hall from me and my two room mates. Believe me when I say that back then I would never in a million or more years have dreamed that the crazy guy across the hall would someday be a Senator and candidate for President!

I see a stone floor in front of the cell door, where Mr. McCain had his "experience".
Further, commies are famous for cleaning and sweeping, so no way there was enough dirt around for a cross of any kind.
Than; no way there were any catholics guarding American POW in North Vietnam. First of all; these wend all south after the French war, secondly, they were/are not trusted by the commies. And there is no such thing as being a secret Christian in Vietnam. You are what you are, because your family is so. And everybody knows.
Further: It is just not a guested done by Vietnamese (it's more a Russian thing). Vietnamese are extremely practical, and don't have a romantic mindset. Certainly not in a way of being specially kind to invaders.

Its a phenomenon that I don't understand. Consider the worker bees and the queen bee. The bottom 99% of the Republican Party constitutes the worker bees that risk death, or supporting issues that are at odds with their own interest to protect the queen bee, or top 1%.
One thing about Reagan that I'll always remember is how he crushed the Air-Traffic Controllers union by firing them all when they went on strike. By doing that, he pretty much crushed the American labor movement.
I was hoping at the time, that the US labor movement would stood up and fought back, maybe even calling a national strike to protect the right to strike as they certainly would have in Italy, France, Spain, or almost anywhere else in Europe.
Instead, the labor movement responded like a whipped puppy, and ever since, the power of the labor movement, which is necessarily the core of an effective organized left, has faded to almost nothing.
That's why the right thinks of Reagan as a saint. To this day, the American left has not recovered from the damage that he caused.
constituent @ 6:
I met a man today--in his early 70s, well-spoken, seemed intelligent enough about other practical matters--who is absolutely convinced that deposits of oil can replenish themselves as fast as we take it out of the ground. His reasoning was, even though he knew so much had been taken since the 1850s, *we've had over 150 years for it to begin to replenish itself.* I effing kid you not.
He was adamant that the reason we're not getting it out of the ground is that Nancy Pelosi (he called her "that mama down in Frisco"--priceless) won't permit the nation to drill, and *she has stalled Congress on producing more wind turbines, solar plants and hydroelectric dam construction.* It's her fault.
I was at his home, thinking of buying a musical instrument from him. (I passed.) He didn't have the TV on, but I bet I know which channel it was dialed to. How can someone function in everyday society and be so stupid? I was, honestly, flabbergasted. Here's a guy McCain will have no trouble reaching with chants of "drill here, drill now."

I am a Democrat nicely asking Democrats to quit trashing Reagan. If anything, I can see more similarities between Reagan's and Obama's campaigns than differences. Both were running against a status quo party during tough economic times, and with terrorism in the Middle East as well as tough rhetoric on how to deal with the Soviet Union/Russia. Reagan was an amazing speaker and had an electric following from people; as does Obama. Reagan had a large following from Democrats; as Obama has a large following among Republicans. Democrats can not argue with the fact that Reagan had at least as much of a favorable rating as president when he left office as Bill Clinton did. Sure, Reagan had Iran-Contra; Clinton had Lewinsky. So what? That just means they were not perfect beings, just humans occupying a very powerful position. Every president we have had who served a full 8 years in that role has had some sort of questionable decision. Get over it! Obama brings hope, as did Reagan in 1980. So, Democrats, leave Reagan alone; and Republicans, quit acting like Reagan was some sort of messiah.

Globalization death watch, part III: Either we'll be green or we'll be poor - http://gristmill.grist.org/story/2008/8/18/181049/080
The United States trade deficit is threatening to upend globalization as we've known it. The rise in the price of oil has been leading to a similar result: an international trading system in which there is much less trading. Now, that may actually be a good thing, in the long-run, but in the case of the United States it might happen in a very chaotic way.
This problem that has been accelerating since George W. Bush took office: The United States has been buying many more goods than it has been selling. As I hope to explain, eventually this will lead to a sharp fall in the value of the dollar, which will lead to a sharp fall in our standard of living.
The irony is this: in order to save globalization, the U.S. will have to lessen it. If the U.S. rebuilds its manufacturing sector so that it doesn't have to import as many goods and can export more goods, then the dollar will not collapse, and a healthy amount of trade -- that is, trade that will be possible with expensive oil -- can continue. But if the U.S. continues to hollow out its manufacturing base, eventually it will turn into the equivalent of a poor country, only able to sell raw materials to the richer countries that can manufacture.
Rebuilding the manufacturing economy by building up green industries like wind and solar equipment, rail, and electric cars is not only good for green collar job creation, but it will also allow us to balance our trade because we would not have to import oil and we could trade our manufactured goods for foreign manufactured goods.
An Oil-based economy is doomed (Russia will have a 20 year resurgence...then...kaboom)...we're at a historic moment in history...lets not be greedy, lets be smart.
Bush/Cheney Crime Family: The Secret Deal For Iraq's Oil - Jason Leopold - http://pubrecord.org/nationworld/262.html
Previously undisclosed Halliburton documents obtained by The Public Record confirm that controlling the world's second largest oil reserves was a top priority for the Bush administration. Additionally, the deal between the Department of Defense and Halliburton unit Kellogg, Brown & Root to operate Iraq's oil industry saved Halliburton from imminent bankruptcy.

MUST READ! Military.com: Why I Will Not Vote for John McCain, By Phillip Butler - http://www.michaelmoore.com/mustread/index.php?id=1038
Doctor Phillip Butler is a 1961 graduate of the United States Naval Academy and a former light-attack carrier pilot. In 1965 he was shot down over North Vietnam where he spent eight years as a prisoner of war. He is a highly decorated combat veteran who was awarded two Silver Stars, two Legion of Merits, two Bronze Stars and two Purple Heart medals.
Sorry folks the link to military.com is down...gee wonder why....this is a keeper and should be sent to all McBush voters/supporters...

Ah,... the Bush Boom. It's a bygone era, ... cut short--by ... the Bush recession. Actually, the second Bush recession, to be precise.
When Phil Gramm recently remarked that we were becoming "a nation of whiners, " he gave voice to what had become the standard Republican view. What's the matter with you people? Can't you see that Phil Gramm (still McBush's chief economic adviser)and everybody he knows are making out like bandits?

McBush's War: Playing With Nuclear Fire - Steve Weissman - http://www.truthout.org/article/mccains-war-playing-with-nuclear-fire
John McCain calls the conflict in Georgia "the first probably serious crisis internationally since the end of the Cold War," and he is doing everything he can to make it his own, even at the cost of upstaging the shrinking President Bush. But the tragedy in Georgia also reveals the most embarrassing foreign policy blunder since - well, since the Bush administration decided to wage a preemptive war in Iraq.
If deep thinkers in Washington insist on setting up a string of client states to encircle Russia, they should never let the puppets pull their own strings, as [Georgian President] Mikheil Saakashvili appears to have done when he sent his army into rebellious South Ossetia. Certainly, the Russian bullies were just waiting to pounce on any provocation, but that is precisely the point. Never provoke unless you are prepared to respond, and don't leave the decision to "the help."
Every day the crisis continues, Washington looks more foolish, huffing and puffing and mouthing demands that no one - least of all the Russians - take as anything but Cold War rhetoric. This could lead to dangerous miscalculations on all sides, yet no one in our dumbed-down imperium seems likely ever to be held to account.

Bob Herbert: A World of Difference 'Around the same time that the McCain campaign was pocketing its oil industry windfall, the historian Douglas Brinkley was poring over letters in which Roosevelt, running for his first full term as president in 1904, was indignantly ordering his campaign to return a $100,000 contribution from the Standard Oil Company.'

Bush is afraid of Joe Biden. Check out these pictures taken July 30 at the White House. In the first one, Bush looks sheepish or guilty. In the second one, he's shaking hands with Biden but looking at Richard Lugar. Bad sign when you can't look somebody in the eye.

In the longer view of history, Reagan will be seen as the foolish figure who destroyed America. Our present "little toad who would be king" is just his spawn.

How did we manage to bungle election this up so badly?
Obama screwed up doing a European tour and then a Hawaiian vacation (relatives or not). He has been steadily declining. The GOP is now hollering for his UofC papers and his relationship with Ayer. The ads will be devastating, and being a new kinda pol and all, how will O meaningfully strike back without Candy Crowley and the crew harping on his flip-flopping again? THAT will be the media story while the ads work their magic.
It's gonna take a miracle.

"Rice signs missile defense deal with Poland"
"WARSAW, Poland - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and her Polish counterpart signed a deal Wednesday to build a U.S. missile defense base in Poland, an agreement that prompted an infuriated Russia to warn of a possible attack against the former Soviet satellite."
Ray gun was the woist.
He ran calling for the 200 year and then some deficit to be cut, and instead doubles it in just eight. He made up a phony war in Grenada to improve his ratings (the original Wag-the-Dog). He takes credit for the fall of the Soviet Union simply because he spoke Pat Buchanan's idiotic line, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down that wall." Roger Waters should sue them. Actually it was the corruption and the market reforms of Gorbachev that did that with perestroika and glasnost.
He even tore up the unions, thus dooming us to stagnant wages, while supporting Glasnost, and despite being a former union head himself.
And he played up to the idiot fringe Moral Majority too much.
What did Reagan exactly do? I lack fact based historical knowledge about this. I know about Reagan Democrats and how he swayed a lot of votes, but did he inject religion and bigotry? I'd like to understand the image in full glory.
And since he is deified by all the repugs and by the other large ignorant part of the population who just blindly follows what pundits and repug says, I fear I won't get much more clear, concise and critical info from wiki. Isn't he the greatest American, no?
@5
One of the Reagan myths is that he single handedly ended the cold war. That it wasn’t 40 years of containment that did it, and the inherent bankruptcy of Soviet Communism, but instead RR’s belligerence. Well I’ve always felt that this myth was not only wrong, but dangerous.
Lol, when the pope died, on eulogies on television all Pundits were yelling "The pope that defeated Communism". Those myths and exaggeration of the action of one technocrat are really a pain in the as to listen to. The only thing the pope really did succed in singlehandedly is to have help spraid aids and teenager pregnancy in the third world by denouncing condoms.
The effect of one ill-advised person is only strong and direct in utter failure, as success often depends on thousand of factors on which one hasn't got allways control.
So they better not try to single out the things on which they had a pronounced effect.
McCain IS The Manchurian Candidate:

Reagan was a puppet-moron President who ushered in the current right-wing Totalitarian movement in the United States.

Charles @ 95:
The greatest danger to American foreign policy would be the enemy within.
If ever there were a place to just stay away from, it is surely the Caucasus,Seldom was a policy so stupid,
South Ossetia and Abkhazia are likely to be only a taste of things to come.
US efforts to bring Georgia into Nato, and the routing of a key Caspian oil pipeline through its territory
Aimed only at weakening Russia's control of energy supplies, It was only a matter of time before a conflict.
That in times before the liberal interventionism of George W Bush (pre 2001) would have been handled by the,
United Nations through quarantine and negotiation With calls to respect national sovereignty that was then.
But both the current president, Mikheil Saakashvili, and his predecessor came to power in western-backed coups,
the most recent the "Rose revolution".
Neoconservatives often try to gloss over this intervention in a foreign nation as simply spreading democracy.
When a government is installed "Democratic" simply seems to mean "pro-western" in these cases this is not democracy.
With all the fury over Russian aggression it turns out it was actually Georgia that began the war Aug 7th 2008,
with an all-out attack on South Ossetia to "restore constitutional order"
Georgian president, Mikheil Saakashvili,
Said he claimed the right to assert military control over its two dissident provinces, South Ossetia and Abkhazia,
And Georgia's president thought he could call on the support of neoconservative allies in Washington proving like,
George Bush, and John McCain, that even a western University education cant change a doorknob into a genius.
America is otherwise engaged in wars that bear a striking resemblance with concern to sovereignty of other nations
The west has lost all leverage and can do nothing.
Georgian president, Mikheil Saakashvili, and George Bush were treated by Russia to a brutal lesson in power politics.
America's imperial expansion project undoubtedly provoked a backlash of Russian aggression.
The people promoting military action are mostly the same people that promoted the action in Iraq,(PNAC)
and other think tanks and study groups.
In his Farewell Address, George Washington expressed the view that the greatest danger to American foreign relations
would be the "passionate attachment" of influential Americans to a foreign power,
which would orient U.S. foreign policy for the benefit of that power to the detriment of the United States.
dose such a situation exists today?.
Notice that you are staying clear of the Georgia neonazicon war. Would hate to think that it is because bloody Israel/AIPAC is the unmentioned provakature, and a chief player, right up close and personal with good 'ol USA. Another neonaziecon fall on your face 'operation'. Love it!!!!!
Charles @ 95:
B..b..b..b...but we can't go to war again! The "24" movie hasn't come out yet, and I really want to see it!
StirFry @ 100:
I don't know that he's really pandered his way into many of our hearts, StirFry. I honestly don't know where this is coming from, at least from my perspective, as no one I know is really excited about McCain. Everyone I talk to just shakes their heads when I bring his name up, like 'What are ya gonna do'. The end of the party? I don't know about that eithere- it's hard to predict that with the current ineptitude of the Democrats, and if Obama loses, it could be devastating for them. So neither side wins, really.
This poll may not be accurate, it is Zogby afterall, but the trend is not favorable to Obama, and the inexperience attribute is starting to become obvious. But no way should this be happening. He needs a game-changer, the right VP pick or a serious error by McCain, something. Right now, Obama needs to step it up or it won't even be close.
Arch @ 75:
back in the seventies, when I was a young man living in CA, I really didn't give a shit one way or the other about politics. That is, until our illustrious gov Ray-gun gave a speech about how the average man should feel the bite of paying taxes because then he knows he's paying for "good" government. Back then we actually had reporters that did what they were supposed to do and one of them asked his highness how much he paid in taxes. Good Ronnie pooh-poohed the question so a reporter dug into and discovered that the hypocrite bastard payed virtually nothing because he had all his money in tax-sheltered investments.
From that point on I couldn't stomach this POS, but I'll give him credit for one thing; he made me aware of the fact that that we all need to become informed and active participants in this thing we call democracy if we expect it to be around for future generations.

I have been poking around Craigs List, looking for a car. I noticed that it also has threads for rants and raves, and politics. So I read a bit, mostly Fox news rightwing talking points, Harrisburg, PA. I added some posts to try and even things up a bit. Rants and raves has a nazi Operator that flags post down pretty quick, so sad, even Craigs List has a censor.

Defending idiocy, what does that make the defender?
ray gun spent his entire time in the Whitehouse doing his interminable, irritating imitation of Jimmy Stewart in Mr. Smth Goes to Washington.
Dennis @ 109:
Should I draw my scenario again.
1) USA installs puppet regime in Georgia, then eggs that regime into antagonizing Russia.
2) At the same time, the neocon Administration continues to negotiate and install "defense shield" system into former Soviet republics and satellites, ringing Russia. This is in DIRECT VIOLATION of the promise made by President Reagan, the patron saint of the GOP, to Mikail Gorbachev to "share the defense system" with them and also to NEVER install it within the Russian sphere of influence and threaten Russian national interests.
3) Russians "invade" Georgia, in defense of their citizens and in defense of South Ossetia, which has formal relations with the Russians.
4) Now...let's play the speculation game...U.S. covertly provides military assistance and "supplies" to Georgia.
5) Now...reality...meeting held in Brussels by heads of NATO stating support of Georgia. President Bush advises Russia not to attempt to "redraw the Cold War" map.
6) Russian response is to threaten Western Europe with reduced or eliminating oil shipments to the West unless their sovereignty and national and defense interests are respected.
7) More speculation...U.S. moves additional carrier group into Persian Gulf to protect oil shipments through the Straits of Hormuz
8) and more...U.S. advises Syria and Iran of their interests in maintaining stability in the Middle East. U.S. repositions ground troops on Iraq-Iran border. Warns Iran that any provocative action will result in an attack on "weapons facilities".
9) Russia provides additional fighter aircraft and "instructors" to Iran. Unsubstantiated rumors are that Russia has also based a small bomber group inside Iranian territory.
10) Russia moves carrier group into Persian Gulf for "military exercises". U.N. voices concern over so many battleships in close proximity in the Gulf.
Anyone want to take it from there. Here's some scenarios...Israel bombs Iranian targets over nuke concerns. Russian and U.S. battleships collide with one another in the Gulf. Russian soldier kills U.S. military advisor on Poland-Georgian border or vice versa, claiming border incursion.
Yeah. It can get bad very quickly. Particularly when you have no real diplomats in our current Administration.

At this point in 1992, George H.W. Bush was leading Clinton too.
The historical record shows that in the real world, hegemony never has been a winning grand strategy.
The reason is simple: The primary aim of states in international politics is to survive and maintain their sovereignty.
And when one state becomes too powerful — becomes a hegemony — the imbalance of power in its favor is a menace to the security of all other states.
So throughout modern international political history, the rise of a would-be hegemony always has triggered the formation of counter-hegemonic alliances by other states

I never did Frank Luntz polling, I don't know what you're talking about there. Polls are polls, believe what you want to from them. But all polls show Obama's lead tightening. Dramatically.
And about the only thing I remember from Frank Luntz in the Obama-Clinton race, was when he asked a focus group of Obama supporters if they could name an accomplishment of Obama's that stood out in their minds, not one person could name one.
From what all the polls lately are telling us, that still pretty much applies.
Rusty The One Shackleford @ 130:
Might be relevant, Big Russ, if Ross Perot were running this year, but he's not.
He's 78 years old. Age and experience seem to be popular right now; maybe you guys can recruit him to be the spoiler again.
As a huge activist naysayer against Obama's centrist panderings - and with the 9-15 drop in his support proving it isn't just ME who believes that- the REALLY REALLY GOOD NEWS in all of this is that McCain, with the full weight of everything thrown at Obama by the Right and others, including the old sink that is Joe Lieberman they've got being thrown at Obama - McCain is still not beating him and McCain numbers remain so down around 44-45 HE JUST CAN'T GET UP.
Fly like a butterly- and you can go a log way it seems.

So if it hadn't been for Perot, Clinton would have been leading in August and then gone on to lose the election? Interesting take on history, lil' d.
But if age and experience are so popular right now, why can't McCain seal the deal? Is it because so much of his experience is questionable or downright shady? The lackluster military career, the adultery, Keating 5, the constant flip-flopping, etc?

Ah yes dennis...McBain is old, and experienced alright...older than dirt, and experienced at what, exactly dennis? Being a so called "maverick"? Waffling on every issue? NOT showing up for votes? ANd Voting the Chimpy line when he DOES get his old ass to the senate...
