Despite having appeared on the greatly lamented Sam Seder Show more times than I can remember, John has never met Sam face to face.  Luckily, The Big Tent in Denver was big enough to bring on these two giants in the progressive community to talk shop.

GOP 'war room' revs up as Giuliani goes on air

DENVER - While former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner gave the Democratic convention keynote address, Republican Rudy Giuliani was arguing that Barack Obama isn't ready for prime time.

"If Democrats are telling us he's not ready to be president of the United States, we better listen," former presidential candidate Giuliani, a John McCain surrogate here, said in an interview on the Fox News Channel.

Giuliani, along with another vanquished McCain foe, Mitt Romney, made a flurry of media rounds in the continuing GOP effort to counter the Democratic convention narrative.

At the same time, three GOP members of Congress — a Cuban-American, a woman and a Jew — were among party people who joined Mitt Romney on the party's shoot-from-the-sidelines attack on Barack Obama on Tuesday. They argued that the Illinois senator is a celebrity rock star not ready for prime time in the Oval Office.

"John McCain votes with Bush 95% of the time. That's not a maverick - that's a sidekick!" Bob Casey Jr.

Best line and delivery of a line so far. Talk about perfect.

Wow, I'm here in NYC watching teh CSPAN and DiAnne is there, live-blogging her life away, at the Big Tent, mebbe we should try to do the same thing Marc & Sammie are doing.

What was the deal with the Gitmo Orange Jumpsuit Hillary wore tonight?

Bold choice.

Great to see the live action from Denver. John and Sam, thank you !

Stay safe and keep up the great work that you do for all of us. We need you.

Well, with the 22 million new jobs and the budget surplus Bill Clinton left behind, George W. Bush came into office on third base, and then he stole second.

And John McCain cheered him every step of the way."

might be a good thing, obese kids need proper healthy food not platefuls of cheeseburgers for lunch.
poor kids get free or subsidized meals, the fat ones who pay can survive on 1 CB rather than 2 or 3

Never mind about the monopoly comment, as Wikipedia says the company which got sued has labor violations in China.

US Attorney Troy Eid said investigators had found "insufficient evidence of any kind of plot or threat" among the men.

Mr Eid said the threat instead appeared to have been the product of the "racist rantings" of methamphetamine addicts.

so all the evidence found and documented in the BATF affidavits is of no worth, 'move along nothing to see here'

theres the little matter of the two mystery men they met 2am sunday morning, plus the ammo for the missing third rifle.
and of course racist rednecks routinely travel with bipoded rifles and multiple laptops, two months before hunting season opens.

Reminded me of my student days at Berkeley - 1968-70.

Jesus, I watching the video on MSNBC. The interview with Kathrine Sebelius is enough to make progressives pull out their hair. Talk about media continuing to ask the same stupid questions over and over again.

This convention is the worst ever. Two days down and so far nothing. The keynote was the worst ever. I don't even think I am going to watch anymore.

Hillary did a great job putting to rest the garbage the media has tried to portray about the party being divided. Now hopefully now they and PUMA will STFU. I hope they can eat their crow without throwing up anymore vomit on the rest of us.

Just be glad she's not Obama's running mate.

John McCain got his "Maverick" title from wrecking the plane he flew. Funny how a title that was used to soften the blow of being the bottom of his class, is now used to describe him in the light for the GOP.

What is also interesting is that both John McCain and George Bush were the most malleable candidate that the corporate would sponsor. Both were bottom of their class academically and both were silver spoon fed most of their lives. Of all the possible candidate for the GOP, the one that showed the least amount of balls were the one to arise. With public finance for the campaign coming in at less than .9%, it is no wonder that the corporation that pulls the string are the one that pick McCain to be the presidential nominee for the GOP.

Meanwhile, outside of the DNCC , here's a reminder of the current mess and clean up that's in store:
US Officers Executed Iraqis

I'm expecting them to bring out the big guns Wed.

I can't help it, I'm totally bugged.

I don't care what anybody says, future scientists will calibrate their self-aggrandizing & grudge-measuring instruments by Hillary's speech. Try disguising hate mail as an endorsement and this is what you get. Seriously, talk about a precisely crafted insult:

• "John McCain is my colleague and friend." Yeah, weird that you don't describe Barak that way.

• "Joe Biden is a strong leader and a good man. [...] He's tough, and wise." Yeah, weird that you don't describe Barak that way.

• Instead of "Obama understands" we get "we need to vote for Obama because we need a President who understands ..." Nice. The President you speak of must some separately distinct person other than Obama. And NEED to vote for Obama? Not - we get to, we have the opportunity to, have the privilege of, are excited to, are thrilled to, can't wait to, but NEED to (twice, there, for those counting), like we should be fearful of not voting for him. Let me guess: because McCain is scary.

• "No way, no how, no McCain." That's Obama's ringing endorsement, right there: Fear McCain. Fear him. Anybody, anybody but McCain. And that's Obama's ringing endorsement.

• And now how about making a lot of crazy promises on Obama's behalf? You know: He'll end the war, he'll create millions of new jobs, he'll revitalize our economy, he'll reverse global warming, he'll lower the levels of the oceans, and (taunting) I can't wait to witness Him sign the Holy Grail Health Care Bill For Every Living American into law. I'm sure he won't fail at any of these miracles, right? 'Cause he's The One, right? That's right! He is! Good luck, Barak! I wonder if I'll be shaking my head in my disappointment in you in 2012!

• Michelle Obama is "terrific." Yeah, weird that you don't describe Barak that way. Possibly because you're couching you language in terms of "what sort of President we need"? And by the way, "Anyone who saw Michelle's speech"?? Not "everyone"?? ANYONE?? Nice suggestion that nobody important caught it. "Hey, did anyone here see that speech Michelle gave? Anyone? Anyone?"

• "We have to get going by electing Barak Obama" We have to? Oh good, because I thought we NEEDED to. Well, it sounds like maybe Barak can lay the groundwork for some future Clinton President to really enjoy some significant accomplishments. Wow, this IS an exciting moment in history!

• Nice conclusion in not mentioning Obama at all! "Think of your children and grandchildren on election day." Nice. Like maybe they'll be able to vote for a woman some day, a woman Clinton! Thank you so much! Thank you! Thank you! God bless America!

I know it isn't a popular opinion right now, but I really am shocked this speech was received with any warmth or praise whatsoever. It's a resentful, hair-splitting, self-centered load. Seriously. Read it. It is an unbelievably wonderful thing that Hillary is not the nominee. She's an egotistical blister of poison, and I don't mean that in a good way.
Though, honestly, I really would have loved to shove her down the Republicans' throats for a term or two. Oh well. Barak will have to do. I guess I need to vote for him now. Because, you know, anybody but McCain until the next Clinton.

The Main Stream Media seems not to have noticed this - or is conveniently ignoring it.

Last night on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Sen. McCain appeared to claim that Barry Goldwater's loss was corrected by the assassination of Jack Kennedy in Dallas.

McCain: ...Where I learn is from a town hall meeting. That's where you learn hopes, dreams, aspirations and concerns of Americans who are hurt right now. So if we stood on the stage together, it changes the atmosphere. Many years ago Barry Goldwater and Jack Kennedy had agreed to fly around the country and from one place to another and stand before the American people. I still with Senator Obama would do that.

Leno: ...Look what happened to Barry Goldwater.

McCain: ...As you know the tragedy of Dallas intervened. But I think it would have been great for the American people to see us stand together.

So John McCain does essentially the same thing as Hillary Clinton, and not a peep from the media???

McCain Owes America An Alzheimer's Test

While Ted Kennedy and Michelle Obama were rocking the Democratic convention in Denver, John McCain made his 13th appearance with Jay Leno to joke about his age.

But McCain's age is no joke. He will turn 72 on Friday and would be halfway to 73 if elected and sworn in on January 20. That would make him the oldest first-term President ever, two years older than Ronald Reagan. He has survived four skin cancers (melanomas), including one in 2000 that was classified as Stage IIa.

McCain is two years older than his father was when he died suddenly of a heart attack at 70. He is 11 years older than his grandfather was when he died suddenly of a heart attack at age 61.

The United States cannot afford the risk that McCain would die suddenly in the middle of an international crisis.

Nor can we afford the risk of dementia. 22% of Americans over 70 are affected by mild cognitive impairment, while 13% of Americans over 65 have Alzheimer's. Ronald Reagan was diagnosed with Alzheimer's at age 83, but early signs were evident during his first term. Britain's "Iron Lady" Margaret Thatcher developed dementia at age 75.

McCain has never had an Alzheimer's test, even though he has 6 of the 10 warning signs , including his inability to remember recent facts like the number of homes he owns, the $1M lawsuit he filed in 1990, or the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003.

John McCain owes America a thorough test for Alzheimer's and cognitive impairment long before Election Day.

Pretty amazing back story to Teddy's speech...

Determined to Give Speech, Kennedy Left Hospital Bed

Excerpt:

ENVER — Senator Edward M. Kennedy had just left a hospital bed here when he delivered his speech to the Democratic National Convention on Monday night, after suffering a debilitating bout of kidney stones Sunday upon arriving in town, aides said.

Mr. Kennedy’s aides described a harrowing 48-hour period in which it appeared that Mr. Kennedy would not be able to give the convention speech. In June, he had told family members when he left the Duke University Medical Center, where he was operated on for brain cancer, that he was intent on giving the speech.

And with less than two hours to go before he was to take the stage, Mr. Kennedy — sitting unnoticed in a room at the University of Colorado Hospital — told his wife, Victoria, and doctors that he wanted to go to the Pepsi Center and deliver the speech.

He was driven there, accompanied by a doctor and paramedics, perched on a golf cart that took him inside. Mr. Kennedy, with his wife and his niece Caroline at his side, walked gingerly onto the stage, where he delivered a highly acclaimed address. He then returned to the hospital, where he spent the night.

This sequence of events described by Kennedy associates added another dramatic layer to the appearance by Mr. Kennedy that riveted Democrats and produced a sustained and tearful reception among the delegates.

His aides said after Mr. Kennedy finally decided he was well enough to come to Denver over the weekend, they became alarmed when he arrived on Sunday after a long charter airplane flight, and reported being in excruciating pain.

Their first concern was that the pain was somehow related to his cancer, or the chemotherapy and radiology he had undergone, and that it had been complicated by the long flight or the high altitude of the city. A visit to a local hospital Sunday night revealed it was kidney stones and was unrelated to his cancer.

Not surprising. I watched Reagan’s goons “attack” the cops on the Berkeley campus in the late 60’s .. which always lead to a riot and great PR for Ronnie.

Hopefully someone has told Mr Seder that there is a small improvement he could make in his delivery that just might propel him to the big time if he acts upon it. The problem is his incessant aaah-ing between words which when coming from Wolf Blitzer is merely irritating but when Seder does it...and this is far too often...it is really distracting and displays a lack of confidence. Perhaps he is afraid he'll be interrupted or fears creating dead air. Just a thought on Sam, stout fellow that he is.

No Expectations
By Chris Suellentrop

On Hillary Clinton’s big night, the story of the convention so far – whether you believe it is valid or not – has been an attempt to measure the bitterness (or lack thereof) of Hillary Clinton’s delegates. If Mrs. Clinton’s supporters are more disappointed than the average supporters of a losing presidential candidate, Ta-Nehisi Coates, The Atlantic’s newest blogger, floats an interesting suggestion for why that might be the case. After seeing Spike Lee on MSNBC, Coates writes:

Spike was asked if he ever thought he’d see this day. He responded “Never.” That is the difference between black men/women and white women. I think a large number of Hillary supporters believe that a white woman could actually be nominated, and Hillary seemed perfectly set up for it. She’s also been known among feminists since her college days.

But, as much as Barack came out of nowhere for the country, he completely snuck up on black folks. We never saw this coming. I think that explains a lot of the bitterness. It’s not like we’ve been waiting 30 years for this. A “black president” was the sort of thing you used as a punchline, or as like a cultural symbol of something. But we didn’t really think about it as a literal reality. I would not have been surprised–or particularly upset–if I had died without their ever being a black president. But that’s the trouble with expectations. I may be now.

Whoops! Top Republican Admits That GOP Is Running "Ministry Of Truth" Against Obama - http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/08/whoops_top_repub...
Wow -- a leading Republican appears to have just inadvertently admitted that the GOP's spin machine set up to counter Barack Obama during the convention is a propaganda machine spewing nothing but lies. The GOPer in question is Colorado GOP chairman Dick Wadhams, who accidentally made the admission when describing the GOP's war room in Denver set up to hammer Obama during convention week. Wadhams described the GOP's outfit thusly to the Denver Post: "Just consider this the Ministry of Truth."

Mortgage Fraud Still Soaring - http://money.cnn.com/2008/08/25/real_estate/soaring_mortgage_fraud/index...
A crackdown on underwriting has failed to halt an explosion of fraudulent home loans. With the housing market in turmoil and lending standards tougher than ever, you'd think that the kind of unscrupulous activity that helped plunge the industry into crisis would be a thing of the past. You'd be wrong. Mortgage fraud is still soaring, according to a new report from the Mortgage Asset Research Institute (MARI), a division of ChoicePoint.
"We were stunned," said spokeswoman Jennifer Butts. "It shows that some folks [in the industry] are desperate." This is why you can not run the world like its a corporation...this is why privatization is BS...

Why was Cheney's guy in Georgia before the war? - http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/presidentbush/2008/08/georgia-war.html
What was a top national security aide to Vice President Dick Cheney doing in Georgia shortly before Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili's troops engaged in what became a disastrous fight with South Ossetian rebels -- and then Russian troops? Not, according to the vice president's office, what you might think -- if your thinking takes you into the realm of Cheney giving his blessing to the Georgian's military operation. ............ They lie.

A new Public Policy Polling survey has some good news for Democrats on two levels. This is only the latest poll of this race to show that Hagan has turned this race from a laugher to a toss-up.

It occurred to me this morning that if the repugnants are going to continue to missuse the democratic adjective by saying, "democrat party," we can drop the e in corporate and call them the elite corporats. Pass it along if you can.

Sam Seder is the former host of Air America's The Majority Report and The Sam Seder Show. His show is now available online only at AirAmerica.com, and he and Marc Maron of Morning Sedition are working to put together a new show (hopefully somewhere other than AAR, who treat Sammy terribly).

He also does work for HuffPo's 23/6.

i never go over to free republic because i generally have better things to do with my time but today i ended up there and that being so i decided to take a look around. one thing i found interesting and hilarious is that they don't have a "mccain" tag (or any tag at all for the republican presidential campaign).

another interesting and amusing thing i came across at free republic was a link to a site called "gopnation.com" which has a poll up to vote on your prediction for the candidates' relative standing post-convention and where i found this mind-exploding bit of silliness:

Dr. Charles Murray: The academically gifted run the country. That’s not what should be, that’s what is. It can be demonstrated empirically that the overwhelming majority of people in positions of economic, cultural, and political influence is drawn from among those in the top ten percent of academic ability. That being the case, they need to arrive at those positions possessing an education—a classic, rigorous, liberal education—that gives them the best possible chance of being wise as well as technically well-trained. The resistance of the elites to this idea? It makes them feel…elitist. And above all else, we mustn’t think anything that makes us feel bad about ourselves.

BC: Along these lines, is our nation’s devotion to the education of the handicapped—as discernable in the billions spent on special education since 1975—at the expense of higher functioning students—an example of compassion gone mad? In your view, for what reason do we preference the disabled over the abled?

Dr. Charles Murray: I am an impassioned advocate for the proposition that none of us deserves the academic ability we possess, whether it be high or low. So I am happy to see money spent on the academically handicapped, as long as the money actually accomplishes something. Most of it doesn’t, and meanwhile we have neglected the kind of education that might really make a difference in their lives (e.g., teaching them ways of making a living despite their handicaps). But neglecting the gifted is just as morally bankrupt as neglecting the handicapped. We don’t consider deliberately withholding special training from the athletically or musically gifted—we would think it unfair (even spiteful) to the child to do so. The same logic applies to the academically gifted.

http://gopnation.com/wordpress/2008/08/27/no-nation-left-behind-an-interview-with-charles-murray/

these people are very confusing but apparently very smart people and very stupid people are equally bad.

OK...this does make me a bit concerned. Is there some kind of news blackout going on? US, UK begin war games in Persian Gulf

No news in the US press that I can find. Isn't this something we should be concerned about?

I used to love Air America with all my heart and soul and would spend literally hours a day listing to it. But I was so angry with how they treated absolutely one of progressive talk’s best up and comers- Sam Seder, by demoting him to the weekend I simply refused to listen to Air America during the weekday anymore (Yup, that included Rachael Maddow too.) Now the geniuses at Air America have completed the insult by taking away Sam’s Sunday show. I honestly can’t even remember the last time I even listen to Air America because of that; Several months at the very least. I suppose that’s a shame, I used to be one of Air America’s biggest supporters.
