Palin Explains Her Readiness to be Commander-in-Chief
http://satiricalpolitical.com/?p=2806
McCain postpones the first day of the convention, and the AP praises him. The Dems have to cancel their rebuttal, too. Gustav might worsen our economy. A chemical released at a St. Louis plant sickens eight people. For Cubans, Gustav is the equivalent of Katrina.
How the Chicago Boys Wrecked the Economy

Obama is just happy to help.
I've been having trouble accessing the C&L site this evening. Anybody else?
Texas Democrat @ 6:
If the Republicans try to exploit the hurricane for political reasons, I think it will ultimately backfire by resurrecting memories of their failure during Katrina. Besides, they're perfectly content having the convenient excuse to avoid trying to match the success of the Democratic convention (and keeping Bush/Cheney away from McCain).
Sarah Palin's mother-in-law isn't sure, yet, for whom to vote:

Finally the MSM is coming to their senses about Sarah Palin after first digesting the absolutely bizzare pick.

Yeh she actually was for the bridge to no where.

Too late, they're way ahead of us.
GOP Operative: "As long as we properly handle the Gustavication of the convention, it may be a positive."
i've read comparisons of governor palin and u.s. senator obama
not sure why they're compared....no comparison. so can someone
please compare governor palin and u.s. biden...seems to me that
makes some sense.they're both presumptive v.p.'s...it's getting late
for some so if you could please start with foreign relations/affairs.
I just finished working at a RNC event in Minneapolis tonight.
the room was loaded with uber-wealthy Californians & New Yorkers.
the host of the party let everyone know that the press was stalking them and they were to be on their best behavior this week
she also shared that the RNC was re-branding itself as some sort of America First! with the storm bearing down into the gulf...
this was to remind the world that the Republicans are the party of compassion for those in need.
this is my shocked face: = 0
then Newt Gingrich spoke. here are a few of the gems I overheard:
> Senator McCain's story is about true public service to real people (Obama: not-so-much)
> Sarah Palin is a barracuda who will destroy Joe Biden in the debates
> keep in mind, the room was packed with white haired guys sporting round, tortoise-shell glasses with first names like Colby, Hartford, Kendall, Corwyn, etc. and Newt declares that Obama & Biden are two of the most out-of-touch, left-wing, liberal elitists in America today...the crowd nodded their approval
> Obama's every move, all the way back to working with the poor in Chicago was politically motivated and Biden rides the train to Delaware on taxpayer $$$
turns out that about 1/3 of the crowd had spilled outside during his BS yap and were getting on the bus back to their respective hotels (prolly not the Motel 6 next to the hwy).
methinks they are smarter than to believe NG's big cheerleading gig
A ship in harbor is safe, but that’s not why the ship is built. ( Palin's quote from her speech on Friday.

Governor Palin raised taxes on oil companies profit. i'm not to smart help me out here. why is it ok for her to raise taxes and obama gets beat up for discussing it?

UPDATE: REPUBLICANS RESENT ALIEN PICK
The Alien’s rebuttal of McCain’s lobbying has left the Republican Party fuming. After eight years of unwavering support for President Bush, his refusal to put his weight behind Senator John McCain blindsided the party.
***I'm waiting to hear what the WWN has to say about Grandpappy John and Grandma Sarah and how they plan on decorating 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
there's NOT a direct correlation...but i'm interested in knowing why i haven't heard drill here drill now....

Thanks, Orangutan @ 11. That phony baby story needs to be exposed for what it is, another big lie from the repub party of liars. Palin is so obviously not pregnant, and her daughter is, in those photographs. For them to pretend otherwise is an insult to anyone with a brain and two functioning eyeballs.
It's pathetic that a mother, who supposedly espouses family values, would do that to her own daughter and family.

20 Calgarylady,
Actually, Chuck's link at #9 shows just the opposite.
I still think the baby story was made up by Rove or some other professional repuglican troll.
Oh, well...I've said it before; I'll say it again; I'm voting for President, not VP, which means Obama's got my vote.
if there is a women on this thread can you please explain to me how governor palin does it? how will she and her husband raise 4 children one of them is a down syndrome newborn and be second in command as v.p. of the u.s.a.
i'm not sexist i believe the father should be very involved.
the (R) are the family values party so how will she do it and be a top notch parent?
While McCain is grandstanding in hurricane territory will someone please call attention to his pathetic voting record following Katrina:
McCain Voted Twice Against Establishing A Commission To Study The Response To Hurricane Katrina. [ 9/14/2005, 2/2/2006]
McCain Opposed Granting Financial Relief To Those Affected By Hurricane Katrina. [9/15/2005]
McCain Voted Against Five Months of Medicaid For Hurricane Katrina Victims. [11/3/2005]
McCain Voted Against Emergency Funding Bill, Including $28 Billion for Hurricane Relief. [5/4/2006]
HE'S A WORLD CLASS HYPOCRITE. SOUTHERNERS ESPECIALLY NEED TO REMEMBER THIS.
General Jack D. Ripper @ 22:
Yep, Andrew Sullivan is all over this rumor as well which is wierd. There's so many other things wrong with the McCain/Palin ticket, anyways.

http://miaculpa.blogspot.com/2008/08/colbert-who-fuck-is-sarah-palin.html
Hey, nobody wants to comment on the audio clip!?!?
Okay, fine, I will pick up the Record Collector Nerd slack. Known as a "break in record," this peculiar subset of novelty singles using clips from current records as "answers" in an interview format, was innovated by the immortal Dickie Goodman back in 1956. He actually scored top ten hits with this stupid concept (hey, stupid is not an insult in this case...) with cuts like "The Flying Saucer" and "Mister Jaws" in 1975, which I actually recall hearing on Musicradio 77WABC in my callow youth.
This is also combined with a Watergate era comedy LP (of which there are apparently DOZENS), which means that this combines TWO recorded comedy subgenres for the price of one! David Frye eat your heart out! I've never seen this LP, never mind heard it, but I do know that it probably features the insane hit by The Jimmy Castor Bunch, "The Bertha Butt Boogie," a record so crazy it should be considered a novelty all on its own and doesn't need the help of being slotted into a break-in single. Believe me, collecting Richard Nixon mocking comedy LPs could keep a person busy for years.
There, I hope that's enough Casey Kasem style music trivia for all youse young'uns. I've had years of collecting old vinyl and reading music magazines (like Goldmine) to find out all this useless information. YOU'RE WELCOME!

I'm a Republican and I'd like to be an Obamacan.
Problem is I hate gay marriage.
Can I in good concious vote for Obama?
I think he'd be a much better President than McCain but the price would be so high.
I don't know what to do.
marioz @ 30:
Assuming this isn't a bullshit trolling post, how exactly to gay people threaten you?
BobbyG @ 31:
what's obama's stance on gay marriage i didn't listen to the saddlebook discussion...i was in a cone of silence.
in addition to that social/cultural issues aren't very important to me either is the character issue. i see many people put that first...republicans i thought were about individualism so i say what difference does it make.maybe it's a better question for dick cheney's daughter.
This Palin Babygate story is all over the net. I don't think this could be a Rove thing because it is my understanding there were plenty or rumors in the state legislature since the birth in April. There has to be something there, but I still don't like it. This woman worries me. I am afraid we are not taking her seriously enough.
She is a first class nut, but articulate and good looking. We have such shallow voters that is a dangerous combination.
marioz @ 30:
I need some help also maybe your the person that can answer this. who do you think is most qualified to be the next vice president of the united states and who do think has the best foreign policy credentials governor palin or u.s. senator biden. thanks i'm trying to decide also...this time around v.p. is important especially since mccain will be 72.5 so i'm alittle concerned. i would appreciate your response.
This I picked up from...
http://www.andrewhalcro.com/vetting_the_veep_post_announcement#comment
"The campaign of John McCain has sent a staff of eight people into Alaska to conduct background checks and vetting on Governor Sarah Palin.
Word is they have have eight rooms reserved at a Wasilla hotel."
This was 8/31/08, this afternoon. And this is AFTER she was nominated.
McPander is just as inept as Bush. I'm stunned anybody could be so stupid. This shows no judgment what-so-ever.
Why is EXPERIENCE suddenly not an issue since mccain named palin his v.p. running mate? help me understand
with a clear response...i'm slow with the politic strategies. they(R) went on and on and on about obama's
lack of experience.....now all of a sudden it doesn't matter.
marioz @ 30:

I've heard Obama is trying to take the middle road on this matter and support civil unions.
SassySandy @ 33:
you might be able to see i am very concerned. i haven't
seen one rational debate comparing Biden and Palin.
she against the use of condoms and 'the Pill'
she and her husband are going to raise 4 children one is a newborn down syndrome child while she is v.p.
she is over the top pro life
she raised taxes on oil companies something obama brought up and he was criticized
this v.p. is ridiculous strictly political for social/cultural
attraction....no offense i don't thinks she's hot of course
i have a thing for blue chicks

AlGionfriddo @ 35:
No big surprise there. He's just like Bush where he obviously doesn't think and deals with the consequences later.
And if something turns up, then what? It's hard to tell with the irrational mccain. He'll probably ditch Palin and ask the buffoon Lierberman to join him. The press will consider this yet another maverick move by McCain.
Maverick=foobars
marioz @ 44:
i've got a question mark after my statement i'm not sure. personally that type of issue belongs on the state level but that's me. i'm more interested in trade, conflicts, spending and taxation. to me the social issues are used to divide people. when it comes down to it.......it's their life(individualism) and they pay taxes. social issues are the bread and circus of modern politics. the rich/elites love it when the masses get excited over the social issues.

marioz @ 44:
Which McCain? McCain 2000 or McCain 2008? It is also depends on which townhall meetings he's speaking at . If there's a whole lotta Log Cabin Republicans in the crowd, then he might be for it. He's a maverick when it comes to the issues. You never know !
SassySandy @ 33:
Biden needs to have his shit together going into the VP debate. For right-wingers, all Palin has to do is be a "black-and-white" ideologue--which she is--and they'll be happy. The media will be looking for her to trip him up, though. The Obama campaign needs to make sure that Biden is absolutely well-versed on both Obama's positions and his record, and that he gets right to the point--if he's long-winded, the press will eat him alive. No going off-message. If she's even perceived to know more than he does, she "wins."
her "popularity" is not what they would have you believe -- just as wasilla has magically grown from 7,000 to 10,000 (i guess every little bit counts), it is now fact that the 76-80% approval rating palin had before the news broke in alaska about her problems with the trooper is without a doubt "90% or higher!"
it sure is interesting to watch the republicans and the media create "vice president palin" out of whole cloth.
Fil Hussein Oaks @ 48:
the palins not only took their daughter's child away from her but they are now parading it around on the national stage, in her face, and making her publicly participate in the fraud.
how long do you think she will be able to hold it together?
yup, you have to love those family values.
constituent @ 46:
I don't want to see gays killed for being gay or anything but they're not right in the head and anyone telling me they're normal is either a dumbass or lying.
But I don't think McCain is a supporter of civil unions.
On another note, anybody catch Obama and Biden on 60 Minutes tonight? They seemed very at ease with each other. Obama showed his sense of humor, but he also called Steve Kroft on his bullshit when he tried to hit Obama with a, "Some people say..." question. (I think it was about Obama not liking beer.)
Obama said (paraphrase), "Wait a minute...no, no, wait a minute. Who are these people? Where did you get that information? I had a beer last night. I want to know who's telling you this stuff." I wish someone had called the press on this straw man b.s. when they were carrying Chimpy's water for him--especially Tim the Russet.
Biden came off as both blunt and honest. Obama was direct in his answers--clearly answering "Yes" or "No" before giving brief explanations.
If 'Murka doesn't choose to elect these guys, we've earned the shit storm we will receive.
I just don't know what to do.
I want the war to end but I don't want to support gay marriage.
marioz @ 53:
okay you need to take it somewhere else. i have a question for you how about dick cheney's daughter she's openly gay would you tell her father she's not right in the head.
marioz @ 53:
Well, there you go, then. Run along. We had you pegged.
By the way, McCain has both publicly supported and distanced himself from civil unions. You can look it up...if you choose to. Doubt you have that much ambition...or intellectual honesty.
Gustav raises oil prices and is probably a product of global warming.

marioz @ 62:
I know I'm going to kick myself in the morning...
A "gay wedding" is pretty much what it sounds like: you're gay, and the state you live in permits you to marry--California and Massachusetts, I believe, are the only two states that currently permit this.
A civil union is basically a contract between same-sex partners giving each person some of the legal rights and responsibilities married couples have (for example, rights of survivorship, the ability to visit a partner in hospital without being denied by the hospital staff, inclusion in insurance benefits--there are others, and it depends on the state).
John McCain has both endorsed civil unions and denounced them--in front of different audiences, of course. Hope that helps.

Kos was the first. Haven't seen it anywhere else. The people setting it up have been taking down sites to create false flags, making sites to move information and speculation, and have been egging people on. It looks like it was set up way in advance of her nomination. It looks like they have even doctured photos and changed time stamps on photos to draw people in. Pretty clever. Also interesting to watch.

Unbelievable. I was talking to friends today with friends about how the Eagleton-->Shriver debacle was still burned into my brain even though I was only thirteen at the time. (Somehow, the subject of ditching poorly vetted V.P. candidates came up). I almost said something about this audio pastiche doing the burning, but I didn't think I would be able to explain it without derailing the conversation.
constituent @ 96:
I know exactly why you posted it. I was backing up your statement. It has nothing to do with her qualifications (she has none).
I have some questions for the C&L Constitutional experts:
1. Wasn't John McCain born in Panama (albeit on a military base)?
2. Doesn't the Constitution specify that only people born in the United States are eligible to be President?
3. If John McCain wins the election, and some smart ass challenges his eligibility in the Supreme Court, and the Supreme Court rules that he is ineligible, does the Vice President automatically become President? Thus, there is a legal reason why Sarah Palin might be the President in February 2009.
4. Isn't this something that should be brought up in, say...October?
constituent @ 96:
Americablog is hitting it hard which is suprising. Sullivan on the Atlantic as well. I think it's smoke. I wouldn't put it past McCain to use a Down syndrome baby as a political tool. Why not? He's used POWs and hurricanes. Why stop now.
Pericles @ 104:
No, the United States Constitution states that in order to run for President you have to be born a Citizen of the United States. John McCain was and is therefore eligible.
RobertD @ 90:
"But prominent Alaska Democrats said Palin supported the bridge while campaigning for governor and reversed course only after vocal opposition from fiscal conservatives in Washington, including McCain."
Ahh, the flip-flopping must be what endeared her McCane....
Palin doesn't have much time to learn about issues beyond Alaska, or about the dynamics of the VP position. Ambitious as she may be at local level politics, as she burrows into facts and talking points, I wonder if she will find enough common values or ego rewards to continue with her new-found "soul mate."

xoites defends Constitution @ 107:
I disagree x. I don't think it's that simple. The Article I phrase is "natural born citizen." McCain, as a military child, was automatically a citizen by operation of law, but that doesn't necessarily make him "natural born." It's really more like "naturalized." It's not a question that has been addressed by any court, and I don't believe the answer is very clear cut.
McCain has a few years experience living in a cell with a kitchen table, ten hours of combat experience, three crash landings and a lifetime of experience being helped by his Admiral daddy, his sugar momma wife and has had the benefits of free health care all Senator's enjoy. Beyond that there is not much "there" there.

Those are pretty funny. While I'm not opposed to it, the first video does bring up an issue that has boggled my mind about gay marriage from the beginning:
Aside from estate rights and hospital visitation, why on God's Green Earth would they want to ruin their lives by getting married? If they want a life-long relationship that makes them feel a sense of fulfillment, then shoot heroin! It's easier to kick a heroin habit than go through a divorce! Oy!
I couldn't have titled this article better myself. Whales appear to be starving.
96 constituent Says: why.. all of a sudden EXPERIENCE doesn’t matter?
=======
Oh .. it does!!
And, as Mr. 9ui1an1 and a host of other Rethuglican Surrogates will tell you, Palin has LOADS more experience than that Obama guy !!
Giuliani: Palin More Qualified Than Obama
xoites defends Constitution @ 125:
I agree. But they are US soil by operation of law (statute - not the Constitution). It seem more like naturalization than natural born IMO. But, as I said before, this question has never come up and hasn't been addressed by the Court.
MountainMan23 @ 129:
ask noun..... a verb and 911 to compare palin to biden. can i get that
comparison....maybe i have this wrong can we compare both presumptive v.p. nominees:Palin vs. Biden......wow
126 xoites defends Constitution Says:
Foriegn Embassies and foriegn military bases are considered US soil. Look it up.
========
Unless, of course, you have the misfortune of being an "enemy combatant" detained on a US Military Base on foreign soil, then, for purely judicial purposes, that US Military Base is not considered US soil.

Tequila @ 128:
They have much to be embarrassed about, don't they?
Not, "Oh, my God! I walked outside before i realized i was naked!" embarrassment.
More like, "Holy shit I walked by a dying man on the street, picked my nose and flicked a booger on him as he died and I did it while on prime time national television embarrassment.
xoites defends Constitution @ 126:
I know they have lawyers; I just don't have much respect for their legal reasoning (see John Yoo). Moreover, the Republicans aren't necessarily united on this one. My guess is "Dr." James Dobson has already had some Regent grad prepare a memo - and it wouldn't be supportive of McCain.
i'm probably being too cynical. i believe the (R) at least the mccain
campaign like to going to the convention especially without bush and cheney showing up. palin should be exposed on lack of knowledge now.
haven't seen a comparison between Palin and Biden
MountainMan23 @ 132:
They twist and bend and break the law.
I will not follow in their footsteps.
constituent @ 136:
If they debate there will be no comparison.
Here's a real knee-slapper by Carly Fiorina from Sunday's Face The Nation:
Giuliani: Palin More Qualified Than Obama
Right! It's those hateful Dems who have used wedge issue after wedge issue to divide this nation, forcing women to vote against their best interests time and again!!
You tell them Carly !!
One of Obama's platform planks is equal pay. Women just hate that! LOL :)
StirFry @ 19:
remind me again why the Repugs think that almost naked gun toting bimbos are presidential material !!!!!!
how is this woman going to sit down at international events, and people across the table not laugh and crack up.
She might be fit to be the 'Queen of Youtube' firing a .50 cal rifle on some redneck video, but 'Queen of Washington', dont make me laugh.
On Yahoo news: Video: Police Raid RNC Protest Centers, Seize Weapons WCCO Minneapolis. Channel 4. This is a CBS affiliate.
How far America has sunk under the police state installed by Bush, Cheney, Republicans, and Democrats.
The two anchors and the reporter, a John Lauritsen, described the raids as "looking for individuals who may be a threat to the RNC" and police executing search warrants. They sited the RNC Welcoming Committee and said some of the members may be interested in committing serious criminal acts. The report mapped out the 5 addresses that were raided. The report then cut to one of the raids which was the duplex where members of a group called "I-Witness Video" were staying. The reporter, Lauritsen, openly states that the the group is known for documenting police misconduct and that the group was active in the 2004 RNC in New York. So the contradictions start.
Police say this is part of an ongoing investigation. The reporter says the police are looking for members of an anarchist group called the RNC Welcoming Committee and they have reason to believe that leaders of the group are hiding out in St. Paul.
Watching the report, you see the blatant bias of mainstream media propaganda. The raid was on the house where members of I-Witness video were staying. The report then cuts to a police station where the reporter claims police conviscated, get this, "makeshift maps" and "weapons." Note, they didn't conviscate "maps" but "makeshift maps." How ominious!
Included in the showing of the items was a demostration by the police on how confiscated bicycle innertubes can be used as slingshots and buckets of urine that the reporter claims police believed anarchists were going to throw at them.
The report cuts to the police officer showing the confiscated items to reporters and stating that these people (the anarchists) are determined to commit serious, criminal acts and hurting officers along the way.
The report then cuts back to a shot of the reporter, John Lauritson, giving his summary. By this point he has completed his transistion from referring to the people targeted by the raids who at the beginning of the report were "individuals" and members of I-Witness video, to "anarchists." Do his credit, he does say, "Terry, we should mention that five people arrested so far, there's not enough evidence to charge them as anarchists."
Now get this, the idiot Anchor, a Terry "something", asks the reporter Lauritson, "We're hearing about this group the RNC Welcoming committee. Why the violence? If they're so against the war, it seems contradictory to what they stand for." Lauritson doesn't answer the questions and states that police say that "these people" don't want any form of government, that their literature talks about how to be violent and doesn't talk at all about political issues.
The anchor's attitude is typical of the authoritarian, right-wing fascism that has creeped into our society. If the police say the individuals who were cuffed, humiated, and some arrested without charge intended to be violent, then they are by definition violent, advocate violence, and must be stopped.
How do they know this? Because the judge who gave the warrants believes that if the police say it, it has to be right. Because corporate media believes that if the police say it, it has to be right. Because in a police state, the police have ultimate power because they are never wrong. Citizens, who themselves empowered the police to protect them, they become the target of police. Why? Because they film police, the film may prove the police to be wrong, so the film is a threat to the police, and threatening police is bad. Authoritarians believe that police abusing their authority is ok but citizens exposing police abuses is not ok.
There you have it. The United Police State of America.
Besides cutting taxes for the richest Americans and Corporations and drilling for oil no matter what the consequences what is McCain's platform?
which cookies to go with the coffee and soft drinks for the staff and visitors.
My urinary tract makes me a terrorist...
constituent @ 32:
This has always been one of the most baffling thing about American voting habits. The fact that there are people who have such a visceral hatred of one group or one issue, no matter how rarely it occurs, that they'll forget about every other issue or consideration when they're deciding who to vote for. The Republicans picked up on this as a political device (hence, Rove doing research for his 2004 election list of "anger points"), and have used it very effectively. But it's appealing to the lowest of the lowest instincts in a society. Gay marriage and flag burning. How often do those things occur? Very rarely. How often do dumb wars, bad management, and stupid economic policy occur? ALL THE TIME with Republican administrations. But which one takes precedence?
Hey, I'm repulsed by the idea of fat guys wearing Speedo bikini bathing suits at the beach, but I wouldn't vote for the party of corporate welfare, socialism for the rich, corruption, nepotism and rank incompetence just because they promised to try and pass a law against it if elected. Nor would I vote against another party JUST because they think it's none of the government's business what men choose to wear to the beach.
And the worst thing about the whole gay marriage and flag burning debate is that IT DOESN'T MATTER what the Republicans say about banning it. They could never get enough votes to amend the Constitution, andif they passed a law against it, it would never stand up in the Supreme Court. Not even if there were THREE MORE SCALIAS on it. Ditto for flag burning. Both are examples of freedom of expression, which the constitution GUARANTEES. So, it doesn't matter what the Republicans say they're in favor of banning, and it doesn't matter what the Democrats say they're not in favor of banning. Both parties have to obey the Constitution. The only member of government who doesn't have to worry about the constitution is the Vice President, because the Vice President (apparently) is a transcendental, metaphysical life form, free to slip in and out of alternate dimensions and time frames at will.
Oh, and regarding a couple of the other comments on this thread. Don't kid yourself about Palin having too little time to memorize enough foreign policy to match Biden in the debates. In 1999 George W. Bush knew nothing about foreign OR domestic policy. He was coached 12 hours a day (excluding nap time) by "The Vulcans," and by 2000 he'd memorized enough to put up an acceptable show against Gore. It was obviously a mismatch, but at least he didn't break down, and run out of the studio in tears half way through, which is what would have happened without the coaching. The fact that Bush could memorize that much foreign policy in a short time is (LITERAL) proof that even a Squirrel Monkey can learn foreign policy with proper coaching.
Regarding her apparent lifting of the Walt Whitman like "A ship is safe in the harbor, but what is the purpose of a ship?" Whitman was gay, so I don't think she'd ever have read any poetry written by a 'pervert.' And she'd KNOW he was a 'pervert' because there was a whole episode of Northern Exposure dedicated to it! You know...that episode where Maurice Minifield got into a fist fight with Chris, the underground radio guy over Walt Whitman being a 'pervert?' I'm sure she watched the episode, and avoided reading any Whitman, accordingly.
The descendants of the RSHA are alive and well, jackbooting through the streets of Minneapolis.
Hey! What do got against Squirrel Monkeys?
:)
listening to headline news for a minute people comparing palin to obama........totally ridiculous....make the comparison to Biden...i hear liberals defending obama fine but that's what the (R) wants geeze
turn it around on them people. you have to understand the negative
linguistic framing game.
