The Satirical Political Report: Palin's 'contributions' to women
I love how the Smuglicans turned “community organizer” into a negative. We could use a little community organizing. God knows these arrogant devisive fcks aren’t going to build community. Their policies outsource community. I was watching the convention waiting for the TV cameras to cut to Leni Riefenstahl filming it for posterity. USA! USA! USA! - “Hockey mom” is right - they were cheering like it was the 1980 Miracle on ice. Jim Craig was yelling “Where’s my dad? Where’s my dad?” “Uh, Jim, Daddy’s not coming home. He was killed in Iraq for a lie.”
The odious soap opera in Minneapolis gets worse each night, this one like a Sandra Bullock movie produced and directed by the Devil. I tuned in for Rudolf Giuliani's keynote speech, a hyperthyroid exercise in oratorical thuggery, which led directly to the main event, Sarah Palin's acceptance of the vice-presidential nomination.
She quickly proved to be a confident podium performer, but the content and tenor of her remarks conveyed all the petty viciousness and insecurity of the Republican right-wing. As she spoke, the cameras panned around her rapt audience, affording snapshots of the dumbest white people in America, self-congratulatory in their small-town ignorance and brined in a dangerous jingo-patriotism that must make leaders in other nations cringe in amazement at the rhetorical recklessness being served up. Everything about her speech was small-minded, vindictive, smugly sarcastic, and shot through with falsehood (e.g. that the Republicans will "lead America to energy independence"). You wonder how much kool-aid these people have to drink to believe their own bullshit. In fact, watching Ms. Palin's performance, two notions came to mind and lodged there firmly: 1.) That the Republican Party has itself become a vector of terrorism, and 2.) that these are exactly the people I had in mind when I conceived the term "corn-pone Nazis" to describe the worst outcome of an over-stressed society.
In the aftermath, with the whole Palin family bathed in cheering before a giant televised waving flag, the true ethos of this phony spectacle revealed itself: this is the party of losers, and Sarah is their cheerleader. Deep down, Americans feel like losers. Our economy is cratering in an abyss of greed and foolishness. We're exhausting our resources in imperial military adventures. And we're stuck in a car-dependent living arrangement with no future. This bunch doesn't want to face the reality in any of this. They just want to "drill drill drill" so they can keep snowmobiling and rack up more credit card purchases of Chinese-manufactured salad shooters in the WalMart.

Eight Members of RNC Activist Group Lodged With Terrorism Charges
Ramsey County prosecutors have formally charged eight members of a prominent activst group with conspiracy to riot in furtherance of terrorism. The eight members of the RNC Welcoming Committee are believed to be the first persons ever charged under the 2002 Minnesota version of the federal Patriot Act. The activists face up to seven and a half years in prison. We speak with the father of one of those charged and the President of the Minnesota Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild.

After more than five-and-a-half years behind bars, Palestinian professor and activist, Sami Al-Arian, has been released from prison. Immigration authorities released him on bail on Tuesday after they failed to explain his continued detention pending a trial for refusing to testify before a grand jury about a cluster of Muslim organizations in northern Virginia. But while he is out of prison, Sami Al-Arian is not free. He must remain under house detention at his daughter Laila’s residence in Virginia, pending trial. Laila Al-Arian joins us from Virginia. That post at Orcinus makes your blood run cold. Wasn't there a higher up who could have done something more about this? Someone the FBI could go to? This is frightening shit!

KARL ROVE SLAMS MCCAIN ON PALIN VP PICK
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4qEynSx19E
McCain should not pick the Governor of Virginia because he has only been in the office for little over 3 years and only other experience was a Mayor of a small town and that Virgina does not have enough electoral votes.
Does anyone out there have screen-grabs of the RNC roll-call on CNN? CNN's banner listed McCain as the DEMOCRATIC nominee with 1,223. Yes, they said Dem. It stayed that way for a good while.
I wish I had never watched that stupid spectacle last night.
This is what the Democrats should of been doing ALL FOUR days of the convention. Instead they waste time by saying they are friends with McCain and they honor his service. I honor his service too but saying 500 x is nonsense.
Once again, soft DEMS look weak against punching republicans.
Getting tired of seeing this every 4 years.
When I clicked on Hannah's blog link, my computer advised me not to download the site. Anyone else get anything like that?
They call us elitists... and then mock community organizers?
I thought the GOP was about letting citizens solve their own problems on a local level.... last I check, that's what community organizers do.
I hope somebody in the MSM spends some time on this.
It's disgusting.
If Democrats were by nature as mean and nasty as Republicans, we would be Republicans.
I cannot believe that politics would interfere with a threat against Obama's life....
That's horrible.

With you on that.
I'm surprised no one said last night, "We are a Nation at War, this is no time for leisure, entertainments, shopping, internet surfing, listening to weak and measly Democrats."
That snide assed remark she made about community organizers will come back to haunt her in a big way.
They were yucking it up on morning joe about how funny her comment was about community organizers. One of their guests, I believe his name was John Harwood, wasn't laughing along. He then informed them that his wife was a community organizer. He told them a little bit about what she did. The yucks died down about that subject real fast.

Just a couple of observations from last night:
Whenever Palin introduces her husband Todd as "a fisherman", it's a nod to the Religious Right.
Every time a Palin supporter hailed her "Executive Experience" and how Obama "has none"... uh, hello, neither does McCain. Maybe they should flip their ticket?
And someone needs to introduce the 2008 "pro-Vietnam Hero who fought for you and therefore deserves to be President" to the 2004 "Purple-heart band-aide RNC".
Then again, maybe not. I hear that's how black holes are formed. :)

"I’ve long been of the opinion that all of the great and transformative acts for good that are practiced on this Earth are accomplished by ten percent of the people. I’ve also felt that the majority of evil is accomplished by another ten percent. The people in the middle are the hamburger meat in the fast food restaurant of the times in which we live. Among this group are thirty six personality types and you meet them all as you go and long before you actually leave. There are a handful of unique characters who exemplify their time and there is a much larger group that plays a tape loop over and over again until it wears out. You could no more talk to these people about what is really going on than you could convince them that they have anything to do with it."

Being at least marginally educated on current political thought makes it extremely difficult to watch liars like Ghouliani and LIEberman spew their crap to a group of people who consider fact checking a kind of anti-patriotism.
And there are no words to describe the extended talking point memo that was Palin's limp and pathetic speech.
She's an embarrassment from start to finish.

Someone ought to be reminded that Chicago is the 3rd most populous city in the US with over 2.8 million people, while Wasilla has 7 thousand people. To be Mayor in these small towns is not a full-time job. In fact, it may or may not be a compensated position, except for meetings and expenses. What could possibly be the most pressing problem that a Mayor of 7 thousand people has.
It reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where he is dating a dermatologist. "Life and Death? Pimple-popper M.D.!"
xoites defends Constitution @ 48:

CMINCA @ 34:

Mugsy @ 38:
Ah, screw that. "Executive experience" - it's a completely fabricated argument. Both Obama and McCain have "executive experience"; from running campaigns, from managing their senate staff, to their actual senate duties.
What we have here is an attempt to cloud the issue by intentionally and misleadingly equating experience with the executive branch with experience as an executive.
Nada @ 46:
The other story (I know I'm preaching to the choir) is that as bad a choice as Palin is, and as disgusted as the GOP is about the choice, they will still lie their asses off in public to support this bad judgment. They will support destructive delusional actions to the hilt. As we've seen for the last eight years. No talking back America!

Bolton Discusses NIE Report on Iran
Listen Now [7 min 25 sec] add to playlist
All Things Considered, December 8, 2007 · Former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. John Bolton talks about the National Intelligence Estimate on Iran, which was released this week.
The report's primary conclusion — that Iran halted a secret nuclear weapons program four years ago — appears to raise barriers to the use of military force against Iran and raise questions about whether economic sanctions are even justified.
President Bush said he is sticking with his approach of sanctions and international pressure.
Bolton, who was also a former undersecretary of state for Arms Control and International Security, takes issue with the NIE's conclusions and says it reflects political bias.
Bolton is now a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research, a not-for-profit institution dedicated to research and education on issues of government, politics, economics, and social welfare.

John Bolton is a warmonger who is not challenged. He deserves a fair trial...soon.
Sidney Blumenthals article "The Generals Revenge" is an important read about John Bolton and his "alleged" spying on Colin Powell.
http://dir.salon.com/story/opinion/blumenthal/2005/04/28/powells_revenge/
When British Foreign Minister Jack Straw complained to Powell that Bolton was obstructing negotiations with Iran on its development of nuclear weapons, Powell ordered that Bolton be cut out of the process, telling an aide: "Get a different view." The British also objected to Bolton's interference in talks with Libya, and again Powell removed Bolton. But much as he may have wanted to, Powell could not dismiss Bolton because of a powerful patron: Vice President Dick Cheney.
The Bolton confirmation hearings have revealed his constant efforts to undermine Powell on Iran and Iraq, Syria, and North Korea. They have also exposed a most curious incident that has triggered the administration's stonewall reflex. The Foreign Relations Committee discovered that Bolton made a highly unusual request and gained access to 10 intercepts by the National Security Agency, which monitors worldwide communications, of conversations involving past and present government officials. Whose conversations did Bolton secretly secure and why?
Staff members on the committee believe that Bolton was likely spying on Powell, his senior advisors, and other officials reporting to the secretary of state on diplomatic initiatives that Bolton opposed. If so, it is also possible that Bolton was sharing this top-secret information with his neoconservative allies in the Pentagon and the vice president's office, with whom he was in daily contact and well known to be working in league against Powell. If the intercepts are ever released, they may disclose whether Bolton was a key figure in a counterintelligence operation run inside the Bush administration against the secretary of state, resembling the hunted character played by Will Smith in "Enemy of the State." Both Republican and Democratic senators have demanded that the State Department, which holds the NSA intercepts, turn them over to the committee. But Rice so far has refused. What is she hiding by her coverup?

If Sarah the pit bull with lipstick on is so bi partisan in her hunt for liars and thieves She needs to pivot and attack the Bush administration for their many crimes committed the last eight years. Get busy Sarah you have lots of "good ole boys" to straighten out

When I had the sex talk with my sons, I volunteered to buy them condoms that they could store wherever they wanted, communicating that I understood how self-concious they might be to walk into a pharmacy and purchase them as teens. They never took me up on it, but one of them did talk to me about AIDS testing, as he admitted using poor judgment a couple of times. Yes, teens have sex. When they are taught it is wrong and bad and something their parents don't want them to participate in, they will naturally rebell and have sex, unprotected, ashamedly and even for spite.
Allowing teens to have children is a personal decision, but it isn't the safest decision for the teen, gynologically speaking, (not to mention emotionally).
My understanding is that Mitt Romney's dog has done a wonderful job of guarding their homes for years. He also has been indirectly involved in politics during a significant portion of Mitt's political career, but remained an "outsider".

That right there is really scary. It's as if the Rove appointee WANTS these guys out there trying to assassinate Obama. Shouldn't this be against the law? Can't that guy be held accountable?
Kathleen @ 56:
Scott Ritter says as much. He doesn't provide much argument to that extent though. Obama said he supported diplomatic action against Iran. McSame is out joking about bombing it, and obviously thinks military action is warranted. McCain says he'd refuse to talk to them. Obama says he would talk to them. That's pretty damn different, I'd say.
Acts of war? I wouldn't say that. Iran isn't even saying that. But the US is certainly provoking Iran.
And no, Iran is not about US hegemony. There is a real, genuine concern in the world about proliferation of nuclear weapons in Iran. 27 EU nations with half a billion people share that concern, and consider dialogue and diplomatic measures necessary (whether the USA is with them or not).
All the USA has contributed so far in that is dredging up their old grudge against Iran and renewing their support of Israel. In other words, nothing constructive. But US policy on Iran has never ever been constructive, has it.
That still doesn't mean that McCain and Obama have the same policy or anything close to it. I'd also point out that US-Iranian relations were significantly better under Clinton. Not great. But at least Madeleine Albright made a public statement on that the reinstatement of the Shah was a wrong. Which is probably as much of an apology as Iran will ever get from the US.
Kathleen @ 65:
I'm sure. Once, heaven forbid, McCain's president, Track I'll come home tour over, his mother will say it's because we're winning and they don't need him anymore, a toofer for her.
In the meantime he'll get a desk job in Germany and somebody else will go to the front lines in his place, like with Chimp.

Alexdem @ 68:
I agree with you that there is a difference. I think Ritter is pushing Obama to take a more solid stance on diplomacy.
Ok, two things that definitely seem strange with the Republican convention:
1) Is everyone there under some mass hypnosis that a party OTHER than the Republicans were running things for the past 8 years?? It's just truly bizarre to listen to all these speakers go on about the tough times people are having, etc. - as if some other 'mystery party' had been in power and not them. I find it very disconcerting.
2) What was with that whole story about the school kids and the desks and the veterans who had 'already paid for them'?? Did anyone else think that was a really long and sort of pointless rambling story? My tax dollars pay for my kids' school equipment. Whether or not you were a veteran or school children should respect you is another matter entirely separate from if you should have a DESK at school. And then seeing people tearing up... it was just another 'huh'? moment for me. Am I just not really patriotic after all??
Military service should be honored, yes, but I'm getting pretty sick of hearing it about it at this convention. Sorry- there just wasn't a war going on when I could have enlisted, so I never got to be a POW- but that does not mean I am not a patriot or a citizen!
Repeating the details of McCain's torture over and over does not make me want to vote for him. I am sure that the Vietnamese who were torturing him were doing it for the good of their country, because they thought that a US military pilot was a threat to them and their government. So, ummm, shouldn't it have been ok for him to get tortured according to our current policy??
The other 'military issue' on the homefront that I absolutely cannot get behind McCain on is the fact that he voted against the GI Bill for soldiers currently returning from Iraq. Don't they deserve the same benefits that McCain and others who served in the military have used to propel themselves into a better income and way of life? You never hear about this in the supposedly 'liberal' media.
I used to like McCain much much more before he started to run for President and I found out more about him. :/
I have now watched all of the Dem convention and most of the Repub one so far.
To try to be fair, I have to say that the Dems just seem to have a lot more momentum and certainly their convention had a lot more actual information. I thought it was genus to hold the final speech outside in the giant staduim for 2 reasons:
1)As an Independent, I would NEVER go and join in on either political party love-fest convention. But I would quite probably go and hear a cantidate speak. Thousands of independents got to hear Obama, who would never have gone to the convention itself for a variety of reasons.
2)I really feel that this dispelled the idea that Obama being popular in Berlin was a bad thing. Ok, so he attracted thousands of Germans who don't vote here. But now he has also shown that thousands of Americans who do vote want to come and see him. It was good political stratagizing and instead of making fun of it, the Republicans could have really learned something.
But maybe McCain's final speech will give those of us who are not card-carrying Republicans some real 'meat' on policy- not what pundits want to call red meat. After the past few days though, I am not really holding my breath.
As for Sarah Palin- I'm sure she is a good mom, etc. ( well... maybe not so good at enforcing curfew or knowing if her daughter is having sex, but... I hear she makes a mean macaroni and cheese) I didn't really know anything about her before a few days ago- who did? She hadn't done anything that anyone would care about, unless they lived in Alaska. And no offense to our northernmost state, but you have more caribou than people!! (although not polar bears for much longer if Sarah gets her way).
But now that I have read up on her beliefs and credentials, I have to say that I didn't like it that the Republicans nominated her just to get a woman on the ticket and I don't agree with most of her views personally.
There were several other Repub women whose views are not so extreme that I would have been much more in line with as a voter. But she really is much much worse than I ever even dreamed of.
It wasn't until I was in the Air Force that I learned that support for the Nation is not the same as supporting any particular administration nor policy.

The Orcinis linked article is perfect. It makes you wonder who is behind the three men. I mean there were a bunch of mental defectives involved in Watergate, and here were are 36 years later with a trio of morons. Also, I'm not sure what Attorney Eid is thinking. Is he thinking ahead to January 2008 where there is the possibility that Obama is president? Does he want to continue in his position. After January he shouldn't be able to get a higher job in government than dog catcher.
