Alaska AG: State employees won't honor subpoenas

JUNEAU, Alaska - Alaska's investigation into whether Gov. Sarah Palin abused her power, a potentially damaging distraction for John McCain's presidential campaign, ran into intensified resistance Tuesday when the attorney general said state employees would refuse to honor subpoenas in the case.

In a letter to state Sen. Hollis French, the Democrat overseeing the investigation, Republican Attorney General Talis Colberg asked that the subpoenas be withdrawn. He also said the employees would refuse to appear unless either the full state Senate or the entire Legislature votes to compel their testimony.

orangutan, care to answer that one, since i just got censored?

Pelosi won't give in to drilling without a fight. [Or will she?] Petraeus cuts an runs. The government bails out AIG for $85 billion, but can't find it in its heart to give us free health care. It's unanimous with former secretaries of state: we should talk with Iran. Some idiots think they have a right to discriminate

Our turn to rob the American public ... again. What's 85 billion?

More useful scientific research trashed by McCain.

Palin’s Favorability Ratings Begin to Falter

Pro-Tip: She never had favorability ratings in the first place! She was just a ratings boost for the RNC, and that's it.

If Palin and her church pals are too successful in praying the gay away, who will do her hair? Who will decorate McCain's seven houses?

McCain's actual message, one beloved by the American electorate and put into words by George Carlin "I'm completely full of shit and how'da'ya like that!"

Turns out a majority of Americans appear to like that just fine!

I'm looking all over for the Hannity/Palin interview. That was supposed to of aired tonight, right?

The Sarah Palin interview with Sean Hannity has been postponed and will now be held tomorrow. The Interview is said to be postponed because of damage suffered in Cincinnati via Hurricane Ike.

Now is the time for Obama to come out with a "New Deal" type of plan. Elevate himself from these b.s. lies and the framework owned by McCain. Obama needs to solidify his claim as the generational leader that will turn this country around. Those progressive think tanks need to come up with a catchy two or three word phrase for a 10 point plan for getting America back on track... Any suggestions?

For the moment forget the issue of "who did it" ..

The Bush administration isn't even held responsible for negligence in letting it happen.

And I'm not talking about "letting it happen accidentally on purpose."

I mean "being negligent in protecting the nation." They are surely guilty of that at the very least, but they get a pass.

Senator McCain, when you recount, yet again, your history as a prisonor of war, the nation is reminded, yet again, that it owes you a debt of gratitude for your personal sacrifice. But while we owe you our gratitude, we do not owe you the Presidency. This nation may honor your service of forty years ago, and still recognize your failure of vision today. In this campaign, by your deliberate lies, you have dishonored yourself in front of every man and woman and especially, in front of every child of this nation. We honor the man that you were forty years ago but you have changed and we cannot honor the man you have become. This is truly tragic, for, through your own words and deeds, you have brought this disgrace upon yourself.

This isn't a plea for help... I'm not concerned at all... McCain has hit his Zenith and he's only tied with Obama... it's all downhill for McCain now... Alz I'm sayin' is that Obama can throw a game changing touchdown right now while McCain is getting pounded by the media for his lies and banks are going under.... now is the time to strike, go for the jugular, invigorate your base at the same time, and strengthen your image as the only legitimate candidate...

They are absolute Patriots who aren't afraid of confronting truth or learning from history. They join a wide and growing list of Patriots who are speaking out for the country they love.

"In times of change, the patriot is a scarce man; brave, hated, and scorned. When his cause succeeds, however, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot." - Mark Twain

Carly Fiorina to "disappear" for awhile:

Another top campaign adviser was far less diplomatic.

“Carly will now disappear,” this source said. “Senator McCain was furious.” Asked to define “disappear,” this source said, adding that she would be off TV for a while – but remain at the Republican National Committee and keep her role as head of the party’s joint fundraising committee with the McCain campaign.

Fiorina was booked for several TV interviews over the next few days, including one on CNN. Those interviews have been canceled.

Olbermann has thrown it back at them, that their negligence let it happen but they have been real quick to capitalize on it. But I have yet to hear a Democratic politician go after them for it (McKinney was a Dem when she went after them, but not any more).

To me it's a no-brainer.

And again, I'm not talking about accusing them of doing it or being in any way involved other than being totally negligent.

Gramm orchestrated the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act in 1999 which “destroyed the Depression-era barrier to the merger of stockbrokers, banks and insurance companies.” He also pushed the Commodity Futures Modernization Act in 2000, which made legal “the mortgage swaps distancing the originator of the loan from the ultimate collector.” The Nation writes that “those two acts effectively ended significant regulation of the financial community.”

At one point, I believed he was honest. I didn't agree with him on everything, but back in '98 or '99, when there was talk he might run for president, I was willing to give him a look. I'm not a hawk, but I have a lot of military folks in my family, and I understand why they think the way they do.

He shot his own credibility in Bush's cabinet, though, when he refused to resign over the war and then went on to hawk for it at the UN. He knew it was wrong, and he knew it would hurt the military.

I'm willing to believe he knows what the right thing is now. To me, he's an example of a Republican who may not be "of the GOP." He can see what the GOP is doing not only to the country, but specifically to the military to which he devoted his career. He could step up and do the right thing right now. If he's on the fence--and this article indicates he is--he could still prove me right.

I believe in redemption.

In the unlikely event that what you believe is true where do you think he will draw his cabinet and administration appointees from? Space? Or is he going to do it solo. The Republicans are backing McCain not because they believe he will reform anything but to retain their hold on power. The US isn't bankrupt yet and they still have pockets to fill. One more term ought to about do it.

The efficiency of the McCain campaign is stunning. I received a call this morning urging me to register and vote McCain /Palin in Pennsylvania. That would not be strange except they called me at home in Northern California !! Vote early and often if they can supply that private jet

I'm struck by how amazingly the McCain/Palin ads resemble a movie trailer. Anyone else notice this?

I mean, sure, political ads have become more stylish and sensationalistic over the last few years, but come on. You expect to see Palin dodge bullets in slow motion and McCain spout a cyborg rocket-launcher out of his chin. It probably appeals to the WWE/NASCAR Republicans, but it's got to annoy the hell everyone else.

And, are any Republicans running this time? Against this Palin-McInsane Independent Reform Party ticket?

I'm still wondering how long it will take true Republicans--like Powell, Hagel, Lincoln Chafee--to line up behind Obama and say, "Look, in this situation, this guy's got the goods." They have to see that McCain's got plenty of nothin' on this issue. He went on Matt Lauer this morning, apparently, saying that he continues to oppose additional regulation for the financial system.

This one is Obama's to win or lose. He's got the "crack economic team." I agree with the post earlier--time to roll out a "10-point plan" that makes common sense connections with Joe-average Ohio voters.

And he needs to do it yesterday. Not wait for the damn debates.

I have to say this about the "Palin bump:" it will be long gone in a month. It may have been the smartest thing in the world for Obama and Bidden to sit back for a week or so and do nothing and wait to strike. With the memory span Americans have shooting your wad early is usually a bad idea.

I happen to agree with that assessment of Powell. He was a well of integrity for the Bush administration. They sucked him dry. I was unaware of the connection x cites in relation to My Lai. This will require a reassessment. He was, in fact, recruited by both parties but elected to go with the Republicans. Bad career move.

What you mentioned certainly seems plausible. His life was threatened, I've read, and he was also treated with hostility by people high up in the GOP (as well as hard-core right-wing activists) who thought him "too liberal" and too much of a wild card on social issues.

The other thing that I vividly recall, though, is that his wife has suffered from severe depression. Some knucklehead on pundit teevee back at the time he was considering a run pointed out that the GOP would declare open season on her medical history. It was shortly thereafter that he decided, "Fuck it." I can't say I disagree with him. I wouldn't put my family through it, either.

Where ya running to, darlin?

I am in Cali now...I think everything is a wee bit slower here. :)

Do you want to be responsible for me dropping dead? Hey, I just got a used 18 speed mountain bike. How about you run and I ride.

The "Rose Revolution" ran into a Red Brick Wall last month.

Now the "Orange Revolution" implodes.

Ukrainian orange coalition dissolved

Will this be the end of color-coded "revolutions" encircling the Great Bear?

I am in Las Vegas and everything is just a wee bit hotter here. LOL :)

As much as I love Cali...I will be glad to go home tomorrow.

I fly out of Reno...not quite Vegas, to be sure. :)

So here's a good one.

Suddenly, after telling Matt Lauer on NBC-teevee earlier today that he's against additional regulations for the financial sector, John McCain has seen the light and is in favor of additional regulation.

Talk about major flip-flop.

I am not saying its hot here but it plumeted to 97 the other day and i had to put on a sweater.

And this flip of all flops took place within ONE HOUR. Senator Clueless strikes again.

X...then I assume you won't be coming to visit me in Chicago any time soon, eh? :-D We won't see 97 again until next August.

Pretty amazing shots of damage from Ike, especially the first few:

Haven't been watching much TV lately, but the coverage on evening news (non-cable) sure has seemed light, given the extent of apparent damage.

Being from Maryland and having lived in Boston i understand completely what cold weather is. I think that has some influence on why i want to stay here.

Between two weeks from now and next May the weather here will be perfect. :)

McCain camp calls Fey's Palin portrayal ‘sexist’

“Just because Sarah Palin has different views than Hillary Clinton does not mean that she lacks substance. She has a lot of substance,” Fiorina said.

Well knock me over with a feather!

All this time i thought it was because he had missed that kitchen table so bad he wanted a kitchen cabinet!

Those are amazing pictures. The oil slick one, along with the floating caskets...pretty horrifying.

I can picture a real estate developer getting a hard-on for the first shot (Photo 11)--a sales office already in place and soon hundreds of new condos rising all around...

OMG, photo 11. I used to live in Clear Lake, TX and used to go to Galveston every weekend. Basically, Galveston has disappeared from the face of the Earth.

Photo 28 is upsetting.

Capitalism at its finest.

I went into the den of the of the lions (read subservient, brainless, minions) at Town Hall and posted. What is posted here is very mild to what you will read here. Obama is, according to one nitwit, a communist, and that is mild compared to some of the other dog feces that masquerades for comments. Intelligent cannot be used to describe the bloggers much less the posters. I don't want to go back but I guess if Dennis comes here, I have to go there.

By the way, has anyone been paying attention to David Gregory. What a sorry excuse for a male half of a heterosexual couple. His tongue must perpetually drag on the ground.

And with some luck (and lack of help from Diebold) he won't have a Cabinet in January.
