Some of the best fantasy ever written (along with The Lord of the Rings, duh, and The Sparrow/Children of God). I love this woman's work!!!

I always have a tons of books going at one time... Don't fall out of your seats when you see how much I'm reading at one time, lol!

*Marie Antoinette: The Journey by Antonia Fraser
*A book on embellishing purses and handbags
*Jewelry Making & Beading for Dummies
*The Encyclopedia of (Embroidery) Stitches
*A book called "You Can Do It" that has all these sections on things women can do and how to do them... I think I left off on the public speaking section or starting up a business
*Stich n' Bitch Crochet: The Happy Hooker
*A Spanish language book on Wicca
*Everything Guide to Starting a Business
*A Rachael Ray cookbook
*A Spanish language primer
*The Hungry Years (a narrative of the Great Depression)
*The Giant Book of Garden Solutions
*Careers for Fashion Plates and Other Trendsetters
*European Customs and Manners
*A book on vegetable gardening
*A book on personal finance for 20 somethings
*Job-Hunting for the So-Called Handicapped

And I also started David Neiwert's new book today! ;)

Edit: Oh and an anthology of Emily Dickinson's poetry...

"*European Customs and Manners"

I find almost nobody here in southern MN wants to use a knife/fork when eating.

It tends to be spoon OR fork.

Uhm

How does one eat with only a spoon or fork? How do you cut things?

You just pick it up with both hands and start gnawing on it.
Then wipe the juices off with your sleeve.
Then guzzle down a pitcher of beer. Or a big jug of wine.:)

Somewhere Emily Post is having a gnarly case of the pearl-clutching vapors at the very thought of that! :D

Oy!

Where are my pearls?

I do that sometimes (like with lamb chop bones, because I like the meat closest to the bone the best), but a whole steak? I mean, I like lamb bones but I knife and fork the meat off of it first.

I am picturing someone with one of those 32 oz. steaks picking it up and eating it like a chicken leg.

The 32 oz. steak is giving me stomach and intestine cramps just thinking about it. Ugh.

after living around the country for a while now, when I go back to Minnesota I'll probably throw away my knife too after eating the tough shit they put up with elsewhere. I haven't had a good steak since leaving there.

The various countries have a lot of manners about how men and women greet each other, about where to place your fork and spoon and other utensils (and the book definitely recommends using both!).

I gotta say, we are uncouth by comparison!

In East Asia, you'll learn to eat just about anything with chopsticks. Birthday cake is about the oddest one, so far.

Things are cut before they reach the table. A knife is never placed on the table. If something is impossible to eat, someone will come along with scissors to make it smaller.

Everything is eaten with a plastic spoon--no knives or forks allowed. Nothing like trying to cut fried liver (the closest thing to a steak you'll ever see behind bars) with a plastic spoon...

You got all this information second hand second hand of course.

I've spent more time in several county jails than I have on paid vacations from my employers over the last 15 or so years. And who says the "War on Drugs" doesn't offer any "benefits"...

That's really interesting! I can use chopsticks for some things, like picking up small pieces of meat, but cake seems like it would be a toughie.

You have to be fairly dexterous with the sticks. You use them to slice the cake by drawing them together. Then with very gentle pressure, pick the piece up. It's not that hard to do.

In SE Asia, they use forks and spoons. The fork is not to go into your mouth (how barbarous). You use the fork to push food onto the spoon. No knives allowed (in Asia.)

And then, in Malaysia, my sister often eats with her hands (Arabic style.) That's another skill set. (Yes, she's a Muslim.)

Of course, my mother raised us with "good waspy English manners", and all those tricky cutlery rules. They are handy to know if you end up in a posh restaurant, (but that's not often.)

The planet is always spinning round to different tunes. Isn't that grand?

Almost thirty minutes of the Baptist Pastor running rings around the dumb shits that are the clueless BP.

This is the caliber of people defending our borders from drugs and illegals, no wonder they are a complete failure.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFS7oZtE8Ks

That tasering and glass grinding into his face a few days ago by the BP was in revenge for this confrontation, and the Youtube video of it.

After 27 minutes they give up and let him go. (theres always another day, one with no camera rolling...)

I thought about the video you posted last night - grinding his face in the glass.

But even before the brutality issue - wtf is the Border Patrol doing stopping ANYONE inside the US?

Isn't their job to patrol the border?

"Border .. Patrol" .. right?

So, horrific as their brutality was, the key question here to me is wtf are these goons doing patrolling INSIDE the US?

These are borders within your own country. This is very scary stuff.

Occupying powers turn to force to protect what they have occupied, they will also foment social unrest against those they deem an internal threat! That is the nature of occupation.

out in the middle of BFE on I-10 a couple hundred miles west of San Antonio. Brand new SUVs driving around at least 100 miles from the Mexican border; my tax dollars at work...

If you're human, you will be offended!

for far too long and got his ass handed to him is all. He won't be doing that again. He was trolling for that Government pot of gold IMO

The whole State of Florida falls in their jurisdiction

I am reading David Neiwert's book and Confessions of an Economic Hit Man (oh, and Jim Butcher's last two Dresden Files novels).

By Stephen Hawking. Not because I am so smart, but because I want to know the theoretical beginnings of things. The illustrations are very cool.

Forms of Life; Character and Moral Imagination in the Novel, by Martin Price

The Holocaust: Theoretical Readings, by Neil Levy and Michael Rothberg

Traumatic Realism: The Demands of Holocaust Representation, by Michael Rothberg

Self as Narrative; Subjectivity and Community in Contemporary Fiction, by Kim Worthington

That Noble Dream: The 'Objectivity Question' and the American Historical Profession, by Peter Novick

Narrative and Consciousness: Literature, Psychology and the Brain, edited by Fireman, McVay, Flanagan, and Owen

Germany’s War and the Holocaust: Disputed Histories, by Omer Bartov

A Question of Blood, by Ian Rankin

No prizes for guessing which one ISN'T in my doctoral studies...

What are the disputed histories of the Holocaust?

so obamas blowing smoke up our ass once again , with the falasy of high speed rail roads to hootersville, its a nice thought but its been tried before and just doesnt work ,its a boondoggle to waste more of the stimuless wpa from china bucks, how does a train benifit the passengers looking for a fast way to get across country when in order to make it pay for itself it has to stop in every podunck junction along its rout to pick up enough passengers to get any profits? trains run on scedules thiers time lost at each and every station , obama says that its easyer going by high speed trains because thiers no messing around with checking your bags by homeland security officers , no being searched no takeing off your shoes , ect ect, as i said before hes really dumb enough to believe thats going to last for long? what goes on between this guys big ears in whats supposed to be gray matter , the train attacks in spain prove him wrong on his rosey prediction about trains being safe from an attack by some home grown nuts, i cant wait to see what else he has planned to piss americas money away on!

better to clog the roads with one person in each big ass vehicle.
So much more efficient, cleaner air, not to mention the need to pay attention to maintaining all of these roads for all of these single individuals to continue to drive in their vehicles (which were richly ignored by those geniuses from the previous administration - now there are some wicked smart guys, eh?).

Obama, yeah he's really dumb. He's so dumb, he managed to get himself elected president, first black man ever, of the supposedly, used-to-be most powerful nation on the planet.

Angry much?

...

Mass transportation sucks bad. I'd rather they ban the heavier vehicles from certain roads and allow a more sensible light weight vehicle to flourish. Years ago manufacturers were working on 2 stoke light weight vehicles, but cause they had to burn a bit of oil no go.

I'd rather the giant Suv's only be allowed on certain highways and off road, Cool ass lightweight vehicle for business routes and in town, zippy. People want freedom, not cattle herding.

It sounds to me like you and I are talking two different things. I am talking high-speed rail which takes you far away. Right now, I fly everywhere. I would much prefer to go by train, but not take two, three or more days to get there.

The TGV in France used to be the fastest in the world until the Japanese bested them. It went 285 MPH or something like that. Paris to Lusanne in three hours.

It sounds to me like you are talking more local stuff.

..

Yea local small lower speed vehicles, but you would need to rid those same roads of giant tractor trailers and suv's for the lighter vehicles to be safe and effective.

I am not into getting in crowds of people, you know people are mean they steal from you, smell funny, and do all kinds of weird things. That high speed rail is cool, but I would rather smaller 2-4 person cars. We need some extremely innovative thoughts here.

Ever see those trucks that have train axels on them so they can drive on the road and on the tracks?

I do support high speed trains I just won't be using them. I don't use plains, trains, or buses.

Yes, I certainly agree. As I look at what crap is doled out daily, I recognize the BUSHCRIMEFAMILY's personal signature on the snooze-news. Distractions, distractions, distractions, to dumb-down the population and keep them from looking at, thinking about, taking their own actions against the tyrany of WALLSTREETBANKERS, and the continuing FINANCIAL MELTDOWN, the AIG bailout being the most egregious, right up there next to Citibank, Lehman Bros., GOLDMAN-SACHS, just throwing good money after bad. We all know it will not work, has not worked will never work, more distractions, and pass the Koolaid.

i don't know or pretend to know much about this project but i did hear they're proposing 10 corridors.
it's NOT really across the nation type of project. for instance out here they are talking about the bay area to san diego. it may or may NOT be a waste i don't know but i do know the airline industry is concerned specifically southwest airlines. cities are getting larger, fuel is an issue, carbon monoxide, traffic and an aging population are some of the issues they are trying to address. i need to learn about this project. at this point, i personally have a difference of opinion regarding whether or NOT stimulus money has been wasted......I DON't know it's too early for me. this recession is NOT of garden variety because of the financial crisis the banks are putting us through.

5 billion dollars have allready been spent on high speed railroads and they for what they are lose money every day,

I worked for Southern Pacific. The rails that are in existance will not handle the high speed trains. The project will be big and employ a lot of people.

i road the sourthen pacific rail roads and they didnt have enough passengers to get a poker game going!

IT'S A FREGHT HAULER DUMBIE.

it wasnt fifty years ago dickwad!

this isn't fifty years ago.

yeah and you dont know anything about high speed trains !

As he shakes his fists at the clouds.

I don't know what those clouds did to him, either.

Rained on his parade. Yellow rain.

They are used extensively in Europe over similar distances and are extremely successful. The point of high speed rail is it doesn't stop in every podunk town. The California route makes only a few stops between the Bay Area and Los Angeles, allowing a trip from San Francisco to LA to made in about 3 hours.

http://www.cahighspeedrail.ca.gov/map.htm

Those stops in the Central Valley are intended to be transit hubs for regional transport like buses.

at one of the .gov sites.

It connects major arteries with high-speed rail (which is pretty nice, if they do it like the TGV (France) or the Eurostar (Paris to London). Then, across the other corridors, it connects them by regular rail.

This would be better than Amtrak, to be sure. And I wouldn't mind high speed rail over airplanes, any day. I enjoyed the TGV immensely.

even in an Open thread, the anti-Obama nuts just can't let go. They would not stand a chance at TP!

What is becoming of C&L?

Ignore is a wonderful thing. There are some people who do nothing but bitch...ever.

I am sure he is shaking his fist and screaming at clouds daily, too.

no lady your not even missed !

.

tyree is on your ignore list.

i think we can all agree we need all the different characters/personalities to make this play,
okay blog interesting. i battled people regarding assault weapon ban and TAX increase on cigarettes. about the cigarette TAX, nonsmokers and smokers alike have been paying for the
lost productivity and chronic illness caused by smoking. we have been paying for many years. the medicare system has gotten hit hard for years. if you don't believe me visit the
center for disease control. the cost for all 50 states is in the billions. what's difficult for some to understand some patients/people have a condition that is exacerbated by smoking essentially made worse/longer to heal. longer means more cost. i don't understand the argument it's very easy to follow/understand. second hand smoke is another huge cost NOT easy to measure.

addiction to alchohol or drugs but won't cover smoking addiction. I'm not sure of your point.

my point was that people were complaining about Pres. Obama raising TAXes on cigarettes and how he said he wouldn't raise TAXes on anyone except wealthy. well guess what when you raise prices that much they know the poor will smoke less. anyways i was supporting Obama because i believe raising that TAX could reduce healthCare cost regardless of argument people will live longer.

...

Democrats also raised the Gas tax too member? Should only be about 1.50 a gallon.....Things happened too fast for everybody to catch everything.

I am not letting the republicans and greedy ass market boys off the hook for the 3.50 a gallon, actually forced me to drop out of school.

gasoline tax is one thing but price manipulation by financial institutions and hedge funds is another. investors were looking everywhere when the dollar was lower. to me people like to look at the government NOT suggesting you but i think people should be looking at wallStreet. trust me wallStreet is two to three steps ahead of washington. wallStreet is the primary player for trouble this country is in currently.

...

lookie here...

http://www.bikeberry.com/gas-engine-kits.html...

Now imagine if this pulls 1 person around, think of 2 bicycles attached together,, a 2 seater, or even 4 powered wheels.

The health costs of maintaining them after their lungs won't are astronomical. They are doing it to themselves. If they quit, their lungs start to heal within three days.

I quit, finally, fifteen years ago. Its an awful addiction but can be overcome.

It is legal. Make it illegal.

that...is pretty radical but you are right.

Remember the executives standing before Congress swearing nicotine was not addictive. Now, the kids are smoking and were getting them into the criminal justice system on status crimes. It doesn't make sense.

i have nothing against smokers per se. it's the bottom line. cigarettes have cost us all a lot of money. healthCarewould be much different as far as cost if cigarettes weren't around.

the truth is its only going to get smokers to by lesser brand ciggerets , im now smoking weeds made in the philippines, and even with obamas tax gouge it costs less then i was paying for marlborows , oh and ron you can tell msjoann and chicano they can stop thier cackeling for the first time i put thier useless asses on ignore!

I had to log off to see what the true stalker said. Projection is a bitch. And talk about useless asses.

I am going to West VA for mine 4.40 compared to 5.60 and minus the so called fire paper. It was once patriotic to smoke cigs, i also don't want my robbery government taxing me just because it's bad. A few years ago PA added a state tax to cigs to lowwer property taxes for people like my grandmother, only thing happen was property taxes went up astronomically and they kept the extra revenue for their greed ass habits(ripping us off).

You know maybe if the country would actually give us universal health care then yes I would accept a tax on smokes but WTF now are you kidding me?

we see it differently. supposively it's being used for healthcare for children. i was just saying the public has subsidized healthCare for smokers. okay i'm done with that topic.

I just have a hard time with it all while cigarettes are legal...especially since there is no redeeming grace for smoking. You can have a drink or three (or six, what have you) and be ok (well, falling down happy), but someone else has one and cannot stop. Smoking doesn't have that. So, that begs the question, why is it legal.

Just a personal beef.

Tobacco is on its way to becoming illegal.

But really, as a progressive what would you suggest be the method of enforcement and punishment for tobacco violators? Do you really want to send a bunch of Americans to jail for a bad habit?

Is obesity next? That costs us a lot of dollars too?

Just as an FYI...I am a smoker. I was merely making a point, not advocating illegality as my desired option.

Got ya MsJoanne.

remember Clinton had the opportunity to put tobacco under the regulation of the FDA instead of the ATF? I can understand why he did not do it. the FDA would immediately have to ban tobacco because it cannot regulate a product that is proven to kill people.

Hopefully Obama will not make any moves in this direction.

I can't think of any other product where taxes are raised so much (typically in $1/pack increments and often by both the Feds and individual states at the same time). I wouldn't mind funding health care or something similar for, say, 25 cents/pack. Why does the percentage increase need to be so huge?

and they know it but they do it anyway and most children don't even qualify for S-chip.
Another Republican talking point in '10...the ijuts

it's a very good question. it's money it's big money especially NOW with the international market. the tobacco lobby is very powerful. the government knows it's a huge burden our healthCare system ie. medicare/v.a. system.

...

How bout making the corporate Cig.s with all the chemicals and additives illegal, and leave the natural smokes alone. I have smoked both, very very big difference. Smoking the native American produced all natural cigs wasn't right, they didn't have that addiction quality, wasn't that they weren't a good smoke, actually smoked and tasted better just didn't have that added super corporate nicotine additive, so I went back to the crack cocaine of cigs Marlboro lights.

Best first step, Just remove the dangerous addictive cigs from the market but still leave all natural tobacco to smoke, only common sense approach. Native American were far more healthy than the European white man, remember.

I do mind whiners...people who bitch about EVERYTHING. There is a difference between rational discourse when you disagree, and someone who is just disagreeable, unhappy and pathetic.

He thinks I was looking for him and the comments going down the line were reasonable and interesting then bam...

Anti-Obama crap. He says trains. What a pile of shit. I don't care about him, he is irrelevant. I had my ingnore on and was responding to that when I turned ignore off to make a comment. Then I saw the same ol' same ol'

Reminds me of Dennis.

Dennis was reasonably literate.

Edwin may be lurking, huggin his dictionary. They tend to attack like attack dogs.

Everyone (myself included).

Phonetically spelling 60+% of your thoughts is beyond the pale.

I miss my dictionary. I would load it on every computer I owned but its not compatible with a 64 bit operating system.

Firefox has an add on (I think IE does, too). And there is always www.dictionary.com which I refer to often.

Thanks!

I have loaded mine on every computer I use. It's a wonderful tool to have at your fingertips. I do happen to teach ESL, so find a dictionary is a necessary tool of my trade. Plus, I enjoy it. And what is your beef about someone with a dictionary anyway? You seem to bash others for not using one.

By the way, I don't lurk, nor do I attack. I did make some comments about comments that seemed childish to me, and they still seem so. If you already have someone on your ignore list, isn't that enough?

dennis lost me when he was/became overly excited over palin.

I wonder if he beat off to her like the guys at the NRO. It got really, really creepy there for a while.

Dennis came around. I almost cried cause it meant he wasn't coming back to troll.

One of the greatest skills I ever learned in my life was taught to me by a gentleman that was borderline illiterate. he taught me how to be a carpenter. he knew enough to pass his contractor's test and was an excellent problem solver and fully functional family man.

The person you are talking about is obviously not illiterate. Please keep that mind of yours open because you can learn a lot from people who are illiterate and should take more care not to put them down for their perceived lack of intelligence but for the substance of their remark.

Half of the history you were taught in school (if you were even taught history in school, as the educational requirements concerning this topic are almost non existent, sleep through one class and you meet the minimum) was bullshit anyway. Ask yourself what you remember about John Brown. Even if you remember this man you were probably taught he was a lunatic. He was not.

Reading "Patriotic Treason: John Brown and the Soul of America"

legalization as a way of putting sanity into the drug law and dealing with the border violence. Hell, I think we should be allowed to cultivate if we want.

I am a child of the sixties. I told a kid that broke the law and was hauled in that I think reasonable marijuana users probably think kids like him that smoke before going to school are given them a black eye.

My position does not allow me to openly take such a stand.

This is another issue that I do think we need to hold Obama's feet to the fire.

i dont want kids drinking alcohol or smoking cigs either...and there are laws against both...and kids do both

we need to legalize pot to start slowing down the wasteful drug war

a 40 year war....think about it....40 years and drugs are harder and just as easy to get

its a waste

i would love to see it end in my lifetime...but it wont

so sad

...

LOL!, I haven't been able to get any pot for months all my friends my age can't seem to find it? Mid 30's, so I know that all younger kids have got it, so I kept my eye out for a young stoner, sure enough I find a young teenager willing to hook me up with a bag, only took about 2 hours from a child, and adult has no access to the weed, man, only the kids!!!!!!!!

...but it's OK to give him a pass on not prosecuting for torture? Just wondering.

Because, if you go back through the last weeks/months, this has been my only criticism of Obama, to date.

I think it took a lot of courage to release those documents, and he will suffer severe backlash from many, and for this I commend him, but the acts committed were still illegal.

(I believe you said you are a member of the ACLU, so check your inbox at your e-mail provider. An excerpt attached.)

"In America, no one is above the law -- and when crimes have been committed, our legal system demands accountability.

It took five long years for the ACLU to force these memos out into the open. And, no matter how long it takes, we’re going to keep pushing until those responsible for these heinous acts are held accountable."

has ever articulated that the administration should get a pass on this. But the issue, in light of making the definitive stand by the President is much more complicated. The push started during bush's adminstration. The new administration is bound to defend. Many state Attorney Generals who have stepped into a previous and politically different partys shit had to defend that shit until they maneuvered the legal arguments to kill the action.

What you may be seeing and reacting to on the tubes or in print by the Adminstration is not the whole picture.

Tenaciousness is a virtue, sometimes. Patience is a virtue, all the time!

here's a book i've been reading although long, i do recommend it:
The Prize the epic quest for oil, money & power by Daniel Yergin

Barry on a rail system. All I can say is, "Good luck with L.A., man!" He also shakes Chavez's hand. Want bug spray with that? Stem cell research is regulated for ethical purposes. Foreclosures up
in Q1. Jindal tells Cheney to shut up. TX Dems stand up to Perry the Dick. Coleman literally avoids getting egg on his face. At least some Americans will benefit from free Canadian health care. The CIA hates accountability. American citizens aren't always recognized that way by the INS.
The EPA's anti-air pollution plan. Americans are lucky if they can pay their taxes. The anti-bankruptcy bill is as effective as the War on Drugs. One of Gitmo's worst abused inmates opens up. Over-farming in California is partly responsible for our drought. The LAUSD puts a hit on 5,4000 employees. The Drug War is expanding to Central America. Another pointless shooting from a hospital worker, of all people. Food safety has to be fixed from the bottom. Unhappy Columbine Day. The EPA looks for more toxic sites to clean up with their "evil" taxes. Iran opens up to us. As the economy gets worse, so does child abuse. Bush's legacy: European, as well as some Latin American and some African countries, are environmentally cleaner than
us. Arnie's legacy: record unemployment for California. Arne Duncan's plan to reform America's educaton system. What's the difference between the CIA and the SS, again? States run out of revenue, go for sin taxes. Palindrone thinks Americans care about her pro-life rants. The bursting of the housing bubble is ironically what's keeping the WTC from being rebuilt. The UFCW fires its first shot at Wal-Mart. The second biggest mall chain in the country files for bankruptcy. Krugman appears to be correct, as the stimulus is not enough to fix the country. The Vatican uses the FOX News approach of defending ignorance. Obama may not have superpowers, but he was able to resurrect the Grateful Dead.

The Japanese are really starting to freak me out.

...

Haha, they are going to do that here too.....(Disney USA).

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3429...

That was awesome nowwhat.

One line you'll never hear from a Japanese girl: Does this bikini make me look fat?

dang Edwin they pulled the video. What was it?

Also, thanks for your insight into Korean and Eastern culutre. Sounds like a really interesting place. I looked at a job teaching English in Korea in 97, but chickened out at the last minute.

...

No it works, not suitable for minors, fix ur filter.

thanks nw.

I read it to fast. They just wanted to know my birthday,
whether or not I was old enough to view something gay.

It's Hard Gay "terrorizing Tokyo"... Hoooooo. He has a bunch of videos, and they're pretty funny.

Japan is one of my favourite Asian conutries to visit. Their sense of style, in everything, leaves me drooling and wanting more. They are eccentric and the customs and mores are fascinating.

You should have taken that job in 97. I'm sure you would have had a blast. My first year (97)was a riot. After 12 years, not so much. Now it's more sort of a work-a-day world, but I am still keenly aware it's not Canada. The benefits have been all the travel, and learning to see the world from a new, totally different, perspective. And to live in such a different culture.

Next step, Prague or bust. Coming this August. I want to try the European experience now.

how palin can come out and say that she contemplated abortion in regards trig...and then is applauded for the decision to have the child

isnt that what we all want????? choice????

these people want to take away choice...so that even the thought of abortion is a crime

WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE????

she may be telling the truth i don't know or give a shit. she's playing her evangelical base. i don't believe she will have a chance in hell in 2012. she almost commited a sin but she overcame herself. good for her but everyone makes their own choice(s). these are the same people that want the government out of people's lives. abortion is NOT going nor should it change in my opinion.

women's rights are concerned.

They will teach and publically fight to legislate one thing, meanwhile letting the female mouthpieces do exactly what the movements don't want other women doing.

So of course Sarah Palin considered abortion for herself, which generally doesn't translate to having compassion and respect for other women's choices in life and pregnancy.

Ann Coulter argues that women's sufferage was a mistake, but here she is, a never-married political pundit.

Laura Ingraham is held up as an example to some evangelical women of how a woman should be submissive to her husband and have a quiet spirit around other men. Yet she is unmarried, has adopted a child out of wedlock, and I doubt she's showing a gentle and quiet spirit around liberal and progressive men...

A simple rule of thumb in life is, when more than two people are involved, the politics begin.

Churches are about the worst because they use the bible to back up everything they do (cuz ya can). An eye for and eye, or turn the other cheek, it covers everything; pick and choose as needed. Perfect for a hotbed of hypocrisy.

Check out this new independent movie at www.independentvoting.org/video

On January 25, 2009, five days after President Barack Obama was inaugurated, 500 independent activists from 35 states gathered in New York City to take stock of their (mostly) unheralded accomplishments.

With top analysts citing Obama as America's "first Independent President," political analyst Jacqueline Salit delivered the multi-media keynote, which examined Obama's election victory through the lens of America's independent voters. Her report was videotaped in front of a live audience to produce this untold story of the movement that elected America's "first Independent President."

In HOW THE INDEPENDENT MOVEMENT WENT LEFT BY GOING RIGHT Salit paints a vivid picture of a fluid but pivotal movement that broke into the mainstream in 1992 in the explosive center-right campaign of Ross Perot. In her dual role of political player and analyst, she documents its evolution over the next 16 years into a center-left, multi-racial movement that changed the rules of engagement in 2008. This movement powered Obama's upset victory in the Democratic primaries against the Clinton old guard and cemented the majority coalition that carried him to victory in the November general election.

Email me at gmandell@cuip.org with your feedback and if you want to help get the word out about this independent movie.

very clever.

Loved that scene and the movie. I want to read more but had to leave 99.9% of my personal library behind when I moved. >_<

I'm reading the new ("new" -- released last summer) translation of Les Miserables. It is the first translation to include the entire work as originally written. All the other translations were "edited" by the translators to "clean it up" and get rid of "irrelevant" material. As a result, the new edition is a massive 1300-page, small-print monster. Summer reading with a vengeance.

On the nonfiction side, I have The Canon, supposedly the outcome of the author's interviews with scientists, in which she asked them: "What do you wish everyone knew about your field?" It's really a high-level rundown of the basic elements of fields like chemistry, biology and physics. A bit overwritten, IMO, but a decent book.

Thanks.

mp

Who is the new translation by? Is it any good?

http://www.slate.com/id/2216238/ When you click on this, there is a map that is interactive that shows graphically job losses since 2006. It is horrifying! Nothing but large scale fraud, corruption, unregulated, profiteering, boldly shown in red and blue, could have caused this much damage in so short a time.

Thanks for that.

"The Space Opera Renaissance" (ed. David Hartwell & Kathryn Cramer). This is a great overview of one science-fiction's most disparaged subgenres. It goes all the way back to the beginning; the first story "The Star Stealers" was published in 1929. Really interesting to see how the stories grow and change over the decades.

wheres the beef? trains are a thing of the past! and are of limited value as transportation ,at most they are only profitable or passenger friendly for short distence travel, obamas not talking about high speed bullet trains such as they use in japan if he is it wont work here , for one thing people arent interested in takeing the time it takes to travel across country by train, and the inconvience of finding a way to get around once you get to your destination is another drawback , i spent to many hours in train stations waiting for connections to my final destination , while someone younger thats never been on a train may use it once in a while to feel the nostalgia of what yesterday was like they like older folks today are more likely to want to ether drive thierselves or although its a hassel go by air, and as i said last night obama touts the convience of not haveing to go thru the same bs one has to endure by searches of everything you own at airports but anyone should see that the terriorists can change any conviences of traveling by train simply by blowing up one train as they did in spain, just one attack will impose the same homeland security searches and long waits for boarding trains , some high speed rail trains have been tried and one is still in opperation and the government has to pay thru the nose to keep it running as they will with obamas plan, if you just want to make jobs and keep paying your future tax dollars for a dead pig , fine have at it! in the end it will fail , you cant go home again

Personally, I find the recent willingness of Obama and others to even begin to treat Chavez and the Castros as human beings by the little things--shaking hands, offering to open dialogs--VERY refreshing. No, I realize that not everything will change overnight, but these simple actions have given me a small glimmer of hope for my country again. I guarantee that none of this would have occurred under McPalin.

the question is! will cuba be willing to open its country to the enequitys of the past by americas crime familys who control this country? a country whos been attacking countrys for no good reasons? and who under the same criminals still continiue to carry out the bush cheny wars in iraq and afganistan? why would they the cubans be wanting to go back to the old days where american tourists and criminals turn its revolution back to where it was before castro took over! , turning its women into prostitutes , its hotels into crooked casinos , or ever let it be put under americas thumb again thier by becomeing slaves to the all mighty buck, the same with chavez hes been there before with the infiltration of the criminals involved in the cia [americas gestapo] of course obama wants to be able to exploit these countrys thiers to much profit there to overlook, were i castro id tell obama to f off , and we all know chavez will do the same thing !

I've had 3 comments deleted and Tyree had 2 deleted.

Does that mean I won the nasty award?

been there.

Sometimes Its necessary to push buttons and sometimes its not. Still learning after all these years.

I'm thinking of starting a website called Crooks and Liars deleted comments.

Should be pure gold. Might get more hits than the regular site.

Just kidding guys. I love you.

{ Remember the little talk we had last week about grammar and spelling?
It's still going on. But not for much longer.I'm getting very tired of dealing with this. So are the other Site Monitors. Some people may be saying goodbye soon if they don't knock it off. I'll use a big broom on this one. SiteMonitor}

{curt, maybe I should have said that this doesn't pertain to you.
Just so you know. SiteMonitor}

mozilla has a forum for their stuff, and you can view the deleted comments/threads in one of the thingers.

One of my threads was sent there, because the mod there went batshit on me. I found out about the removal of the thread because a guy searching my problem came across the thread a month later, when it was about 249 pages or so in, and brought it all the way back to page one with a telling off on the mod for being an asshat.
I had written at the time to them saying "maybe it's me, but this person is tearing me off a strip for what?" never heard back, thought "anymore probs with Thunderbird, I'm dumping it before I go back there," and this notification email is sent.
When it went back to the front page with this guy saying "look you had no reason to talk to this poster that way," Zip! It went to Faroffistan.

Oh, my.

as for myself i intend to use the ignore button in the future ,it gets old watching some posters baiting you when you post , if people dont want to concider anything i post i really dont care , but i wont rise to the bait anymore , its not worth all the hassel , and it doesnt mean they won anything if thats the conclusion they take on it!

Would you please repost the "talk' again about spelling and grammer?
Must have not seen it.Not sure I know what you mean..Not being snarky.Don't want to violate any rules.
If not the monitor, can someone else bring me up to speed?
Thanx,
Deb, VEGAS

I'm sure I missed it too. It would be interesting to see.
