Peak Oil is all the rage, except when it isn't and we go back sleep, pretending that the inevitable will not happen. It is coming all too soon.

The Era of Xtreme Energy

He is rather sanguine about the arrival an age of renewable energy but otherwise it is a good piece.

Whoops: Anti-ACORN Bill Ropes In Defense Contractors, Others Charged With Fraud

Ryan Grim c/o HuffPo here

You cannot make this stuff up. The law written to de-fund Acorn may well de-fund the MIC at the same time. It de-funds:

any organization" that has been charged with breaking federal or state election laws, lobbying disclosure laws, campaign finance laws or filing fraudulent paperwork with any federal or state agency. It also applies to any of the employees, contractors or other folks affiliated with a group charged with any of those things.

In other words, the bill could plausibly defund the entire military-industrial complex.

Whoops. Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) picked up on the legislative overreach and asked the Project on Government Oversight (POGO) to sift through its database to find which contractors might be caught in the ACORN net.

We can dream can't we?

Glenn Greenwald picks the story up here

Salon Radio: Rep. Alan Grayson on de-funding corrupt defense contractors

The G20 will be meeting in Pittsburgh with more draconian security measures.

G-20: Globalization Goes Bankrupt

here

The draconian security measures put in place to silence dissent in Pittsburgh are disproportionate to any actual security concern. They are a response not to a real threat, but to the fear gripping the established centers of power.

The power elite grasps, even if we do not, the massive fraud and theft being undertaken to save a criminal class on Wall Street and international speculators of the kinds who were executed in other periods of human history. They know the awful cost this plundering of state treasuries will impose on workers, who will become a permanent underclass. And they also know that once this is clear to the rest of us, rebellion will no longer be a foreign concept.

A good piece.

...........thanks for the obvious work, the sifting thru BS it takes to uncover the filthy MIC's agenda, and G20 who subsidized the ZIONISTWHORES, the WALLSTREETBANKSTERS!!! Don't tell me the stolen loot gained by Chickencheney, and the previous misadministration of NAZISYMPATHIZERS doesn't make it's way to WALLSTREETBANKSTERS. Thanks again.

So now where's Michele Bachmann & Glenn Beck after they made fun of filling out the census & tried to say that the 2010 census will be used by Obama like in the 40s as internment camps for those that don't agree? We should be outraged by this story! Everybody's facebook/twitter status for tomorrow should demand Bachmann & Beck to step down from their positions for their hateful rhetoric!

many batshit crazy people in this country, including the monster who did this to that poor man!

As long as people support what Bush did to Murka and as long as the majority don't recognize the crimes Bush and his cronies perpetrated on Americans and as long as one single person suffers because of Bush or his co-conspirators, anywhere in the World, Bush is not gone, his legacy lives on through others of his ilk.

And we will all suffer until we learn.

How many more crazy ways will they incite violence before they stop?

What will they do with their lives after they stop? Will they remain in public life? Poor bastards.

Faux News Drinking Game

Every time you see an American Flag waving – take a sip.

Any news story headlined with a question – take one drink.

Every time the word “Liberal” is used as an accusation – slam your beer.

Anytime three or more people are talking at once – slam your neighbor’s drink.

Any interview question prefaced with “Some people say” - take a shot.

Any poll mentioned asking how much Obama is failing – switch seats and drinks with your neighbor.

Every time the phrase “Fair and Balanced” or “We Report – You Decide” is used – exchange an article of clothing with your nearest neighbor and puke all over it.

Got some great news from my insurance company today--the one that delayed my knee surgery two weeks after the surgeon approved (and wanted to schedule) it because it "takes them that long process the paper work"...their HQ being a 15-minute drive from the surgeon's office.

Anyway, I waited the extra two weeks, paid my copay, went under the knife, and now I'm recuperating. Today I get a letter telling me that anesthesia isn't an "approved expense," even though the anesthesiologist was one in their own system. $700, please.

No one ever offered me the choice of anesthesia-free surgery. Hell, I coulda bitten down hard on a wet washrag or something. Did I mention I hate insurance companies?

ron's picture

When I got there they forgot to schedule me when they made the appointment so they had to squeeze me in. I know it has nothing to do with health insurance but, if they weren't dealing with so much with the insurance companies, maybe they would have gotten the scheduling done right.

RobertD's picture

Scheduling is a pain, but I'm glad they did the right thing and saw you.

Gun-nuttery is at such an all-time high that manufacturers can't keep up with the demand for ammo. But it can't be the "r" word that's the cause, just the fact that he's a "socialist", right? Palindrone complains about consumers getting screwed by bail-outs while simultaneously contradicting herself by arguing against further regulation of financial institutions. And for some reason, punishing China with tariffs is wrong, even though she acknowledges the country's human rights abuses, bootlegging, and saber-rattling tendencies. The IRS throws Acorn under the bus. Funny it had no problem giving tax cheats the benefit of the doubt. Banks finally stop raping customers on overdraft fees. Protesters don't like a Wyoming university center named after Cheney, for some reason. Myanmar still engages in monkicides. The recession forces senior citizens back to work. The Grand Ol' Pigs don't like Obama demanding HMOs stop threatening old people, claiming it violates the companies' freedom of speech. Christina Applegate's new breast cancer charity.

This isn't more posturing and threatens of sanctions.

We've had official reports confirming that Iran is not developing nukes, and would be years away from bomb technology. The dusty blanket that wrapped itself around Sydney this morning pushed air pollution levels to 1500 times their normal levels - the highest on record, a climate scientist says. Sydneysiders woke to a red dawn this morning as a thick dust storm caused havoc with transport and raised health fears. The size of the dust cloud surprised weather experts, who say it has covered half of NSW.

Caught between an Acorn and a Hard Place - http://politicalirony.com/2009/09/23/caught-b...
Congress was falling all over themselves to pass a bill punishing ACORN. In fact, they refer to the bill (in the bill itself) as the “Defund ACORN Act”. The bill passed both the House and Senate.
There is only one problem with that — bills that punish a single person or organization without a trial are unconstitutional. Such a law is called a “bill of attainder” and is specifically barred by the constitution. So even though the law doesn’t hide the fact that it is punishing ACORN, the language of the bill itself had to be written more broadly.
So instead of defunding ACORN, it defunds “any organization” that has been indicted on charges of breaking federal or state election laws, lobbying disclosure laws, campaign finance laws, or filing fraudulent paperwork with any federal or state agency.
So, are there any other organizations that have been indicted for those things and receive federal funding? Lucky for us, the Project On Government Oversight has a handy list of federal contractors who have been guilty of fraud. The top ten on the list starts with Lockheed Martin, followed by Boeing, Northrop Grumman, General dynamics, Raytheon, BAE, L-3 Communications, United Technologies Corp., SAIC, KBR.
In fact, pretty much every major defense contractor is on the list. So if this bill is signed into law by Obama, it would explicitly defund the entire military-industrial complex.
If Congress tightens up the language of the bill so it only applies to ACORN, then the bill is unconstitutional. But if they don’t, then the bill requires federal funding to be cut off to all those corrupt organizations. That would save a lot of money!

Political Irony: http://politicalirony.com/2009/09/23/stung/

Still fallacious...The perfect market fallacy - http://www.grist.org/article/the-perfect-mark...
A "market" is nothing more than a description of our collective allocation of resources. 'Economists' refer to markets as being efficient only when they meet a specific set of conditions, at which point the benefits that accrue from Adam Smith's invisible hand are realized through the independent actions of profit-seeking actors. But most markets are inefficient--often woefully so.
There is no 'free market', never has been, never will be....in the history of the world there hasn't been one, there have always been ruling classes/governments that provide a stable currency, courts to enforce contracts, etc. That is how a market exists. A so called 'free market'....its like finding the Easter Bunny...will never happen
