Heard something on CNN on the 2012 non-story that some people are discussing committing suicide before whatever date the world is supposed to end. Any way we can move the date forward to accommodate them?

... and there were pictures.

Thankfully, the Mayan predicted end of the world could still save us from this fate. I mean, November is almost the last month of the year, right?

Has anyone seen a Venn Diagram of those who believe in, or at least admit the possibility of, the 2012 Armageddon, contrasted with fundamentalist Christians? That there would be any crossover at all is logically strange, but I'm guessing the numbers might be significant.

I mean, a couple of guys with brass the size of twin Jupiters were able to sell Bigfoot, not only in broad daylight, but surrounded by media as the hottest story in the nation. Laughing.

I get that there is twenty-something percent of the humanosphere who buys into Bigfoot; that there is twenty-something percent who still approve of George W. Bush; that there is twenty-something percent who believes in a literal whaleswallowsmanwholives-worlwidefloodhigherthaneverest-worldstopsturningforabattle-rapturemyholyassouttahere kind of universe.

But is it even remotely possible that it's not the same twenty-something percent?

Cataclysmic change - yes.

End of the world? - not likely.

From "Limits To Growth" 1972:

Our conclusions are:

1. If the present growth trends in world population, industrialization, pollution, food production, and resource depletion continue unchanged, the limits to growth on this planet will be reached sometime within the next one hundred years. The most probable result will be a rather sudden and uncontrollable decline in both population and industrial capacity.

2. It is possible to alter these growth trends and to establish a condition of ecological and economic stability that is sustainable far into the future. The state of global equilibrium could be designed so that the basic material needs of each person on earth are satisfied and each person has an equal opportunity to realize his individual human potential.

If the world's people decide to strive for this second outcome rather than the first, the sooner they begin working to attain it, the greater will be their chances of success.

Jon Meacham writes:

[Sara Palin's] political celebrity is so powerful that it has reduced a large part of the Republican Party to irrationality and civic incoherence. According to Gallup, Republicans are more likely to say they would seriously consider voting for Palin for president (65 percent) than to say she is qualified for the job (58 percent).

Speaking of ysbaddaden's clip, the full movie is on Hulu. Here's something which will probably piss off anyone at Faux News who reads it. Is Christianity to blame for our current economic crisis? Could global warming kill Hawaii? The 2012 thing might be deja vu to people who've heard other crackpot end-of-the-world scenariors. Commercial real estate's lack of recovery is holding the rest of us back. Cali's anti-pedophilia answer to McCarthy finally gets out of the prison-industrial complex biz. Hillary's already gunning for 2016, by offering to cozy up to Palindrone.

Hillary's already gunning for 2016, by offering to cozy up to Palindrone.

In her so called book, Palin-comparison-to-anyone said that she'd like to have coffee with Hillary Clinton. Asked for a response, Clinton said she'd be happy to have coffee with her.

What was Clinton supposed to say? No, I hate that bitch? And create another non-issue to drive seventeen news cycles?

And how would it help Clinton's alleged political aspirations to cozy up to Palin anyway?

Everyone is equally entitled to the pursuit of happiness. Wasn't that once self evident?

george walton's picture

Palin is what she is, but: What's Obama's excuse?

With respect to economic policy, Wall Street, the military [now terrorist] industrial complex, the Bilderberg foreign policy etc., how is the Obama administration really any different from the previous one?

Palin is basically a joke; and she's laughing all the way the way to the bank; and the media is along for the ride. Obama is far more dangerous because he perpetuates the illusion of change while perpetuating business as usual instead. He's Bilderberg down to the bone.

Why in the world would Sara Palin want to improve her oratory skills? Her provincial simpleton shtick has gotten her this far, and even she's not dumb enough to think she should switch gears. (She is, of course, too dumb to be able to.)

Sara Palin is just a bigoted twit with enough moxie to stare at huge crowds or into a camera, and mutter. She's not in the public eye because she really wants to accomplish something. She wants to cash in on her personality, and indulge in the gluttonous spending of her millions as she awaits the rapture.

I get tired of the media erroneously labeling groups as so-called populists just because the groups yell out. Tea Party people are often said to be populists which is a complete misuse of the term.

Jim Hightower offers a great historical perspective on populism.

"Though the Powers That Be don't want us connecting with this stunning "Populist Moment" in our democratic history, a majority of folks today hold within them the live spark of populism--which is an innate distrust of corporate tycoons and Wall Street titans and an instinct to rebel against them. The moment can come again. As Goodwyn tells us, "the triumph of Populism...was the belief in possibility it injected into American political consciousness."

http://www.hightowerlowdown.org/sites/hightow...

The Democratic Party is often credited with the following, but it was "The Populists" movement that pushed the Democratic Party towards these initiatives:
•The first party to call for women's suffrage.
•An eight-hour day for labor, plus wage protections.
•The direct election by the people of U.S. senators (who were chosen by state legislatures at the time).
•Pensions for veterans.
•Measures to break the corrupting power of corporate lobbyists.
