on a couple of plant-related sites and the devastation from this cold snap is likely to be severe. 41F in Miami, frost in WPBeach, severe freezing in Tampa/St Pete. Even Havana (in the tropics) supposed to hit 45F tonight! While 30s and 40s may not sound bad to most of us, they can devastate many plants (coconuts, citrus, mangoes, nursery stock) that don't typically see them. Going to be lots of brown in SoFla in the coming week or so.
Best of luck to all there.

Maybe I'm misreading all of this but it seems like everyday the Obama Administration comes up with a new way to fuck the very people who put him in office. So now he's in favor of taxing "High end" health insurance plans (Can't wait to see what the Democans definition of "high end" is, and you can be damn sure the health plans enjoyed by the House and Senate will be exempted). That's right, boys and girls, if our "leaders" have their way, you'll not only be required to buy overpriced health coverage (or face penalties if you don't) but if you already have insurance, you're gonna pay taxes on it (isn't this the bullshit scheme McCrazy was pushing during the Campaign). Like I say, I may be misreading all of this but, if I'm not, I will never vote for another fucking Democrat.

another vote that will help the republicans win power again.
Well, Ron, you tell me what the difference is between the GOP and the Democrats other than the fact that the GOP doesn't even pretend to care about working people, and the Democrats just love to put on their little political kabuki while doing absolutely nothing, zip, nada, for the people who elected them.
If you have selfish, ignorant citizens, you're gonna get selfish, ignorant leaders.

if you use yahoo news as a reliable news source you could probably sign up for the Drudge report or Rush's newsletter and get that kind of news quicker. Then you can tell us all how Obama wrote the legislation.
Uh, Ron, it's from the Associated Press. Yahoo, just posts the stories.

I know it's from the associated press. That's why I said what I said.
Hey Ron, you have the right to believe and post whatever you want; your opinions are every bit as valid as mine. I'm not going to get into an argument over this. Obama was elected based on a very specific set of campaign promises - Closing Gitmo, providing Americans with affordable, widely-available health insurance, and cleaning up the economic mess that the Bush regime left behind. Here we are, a year later, Gitmo is still open for business (and no, shipping those poor bastards off to some other limbo doesn't qualify as "closing" Gitmo), We're still in Iraq, Afghanistan is turning to shit, We're using Predator drones to bomb the crap out of God knows how many innocent people in Pakistan (and Yemen seems to be next on our hit list), our economy slides further into the shitter, while the very people who caused the economic mess have not only not been punished, they've been put in charge of shoveling even more money to wall street), and now he's sold out on healthcare. Listen, Bush had his 20%'ers, and it's clear that Obama will have his. I have no intention of being one of them. A year later, people are still dying, people are still suffering, and the Wall Street scumbags are still lining their pockets. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

Cleaned up? No, I wouldn't expect that from anybody. But making things worse - that's a whole 'nother story my friend. It's my hope that, eventually, my Liberal/progressive brothers and sisters will get over this fear of either it GOP-lite, or it's the GOP, no other choice. At least, that's my hope, but I probably won't live to see it. Ok ron, now you can go ahead and make the obligatory crack about me being a Nader or Ron Paul cult member.

I'm with you on this, Gene - he's going to have to do some serious about-facing in the next two years to even get me to consider voting for him again.
It could be better all right... For now the alternative is the nothing less than criminally insane Republicans.
"Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob"

Closing it within a year was one of the first things Obama announced plans to do. Funny, but the whole Republican establishment went batshit on this, and Democrats joined in the "not in my backyard" chorus. Funding for alternative locations was delayed and or held back. Liberals complained that "shipping those poor bastards off to some other limbo doesn't qualify" but providing them with civilian trials had both political and pracitcal legal problems due to screw ups in the way Bush folk treated (tortured) the "poor bastards" and f*#ked up the cases against them.
Of course, two of the "poor bastards" who were sent to Saudi Arabia instead of Limbo sent a Nigerian kid back here with a bomb in his pants. The R's ( and much of the press) blamed Obama even though it was Bush who released the two probably after having incarcerated them for no good reason. Even so Obama reaffirmed his commitment to closing GITMO and not putting the Nigerian kid through Bush inspitred torture and (in)justice.
So, Gene, on simple issue number one, things are not so simple. I'll get to the next two when I get a spare minute.

After almost 9 years, there are no cases against these detainees. I've always maintained that they should be released and sent back home to their native countries. I'm not interested in whether or not they should be tried in civilian courts or military tribunals. They should have to stand trial at all. They're innocent people being held in some hellish limbo while Americans play their bullshit political games. It's fucking sad, and a crime. And that, Ricky, is why I call those men "poor bastards".

judge and jury but I have to ask, "How do you know they're innocent?"
By virtue of the fact that, after all these years of being detained by the U.S. government, not one shred of concrete evidence has been produced which proves that any of them have been involved in terrorist activities.
If you have selfish, ignorant citizens, you're gonna get selfish, ignorant leaders.
George Carlin
they have never been brought to trial. Please give me a clue about your level of education because you're not showing much.
His point is that Obama failed because he did not shut GITMO completely and simply send everyone there back to from whence they came ASAP.
If he believes that is what should have been done then he is among about 10% of the American electorate.
If he believes that he ignores that most of the governments of the countries from whence these people came will not let most of them back or will incarcerate and torture them some more if they do.
If he believes Obama ran on a pledge to do this he is simply delusional.
Let's get ready to move to issue two. It fits well here. On GITMO prisoners he says there seems to be no shred of evidence against any.
On the economy, however, Obama is to blame because he knows nobody responsible has been punished. He is certain of the detainees innocence and Wall Street leaders guilt. That is a good point from which to move on to the next issue.
"I mean Romney is the most conservative on illegal immigration and I don't think Ronald Reagan could get elected in California today."
Ann "Clipped" Coulter
Oh,yeah, that hurts (yawn). Let me try to explain how our legal system generally works. Suspects are detained, evidence is gathered and submitted to Grand Juries which are charged with the task of determining whether a crime has been committed. If the Grand Jury determines that there is sufficient evidence, then the GJ hands down an indictment and the case proceeds to trial (Granted this is an abbreviated version of the process, but I think it covers the key parts. Now, that's how civilians are tried. Military tribunals are way different and I must confess I'm not familiar with the process. Not only has no evidence been produced against any of these men, the US government, 9 years later, STILL can't seem to decide if they're civilians (which means they're entitled to a civilian trial by jury) or "enemy combatants" ( a bullshit meaningless classification intended to do nothing but keep innocent people detained without trial) As far as I'm concerned, having been apprehended on the battlefield, they are POW's which means the Geneva Conventions apply. So, to sum up, Ron (and I'll type this slowly) - you can't determine their guilt because they can't be tried, and they can't be tried because there's no fucking evidence. Get it?
If you have selfish, ignorant citizens, you're gonna get selfish, ignorant leaders.

Those were Gene's words as it pertains to issue two.
Gene seems to have skipped the suspects are detained, gathering evidence, going to the grand jury,
grand jury determining if there is a crime, grand jury indicting, and a trial taking place. They should have already been punished. In less than a year. Let's see, when was Tom Delay indicted? And his trial is set for when?
And just who is "they" who have not been punished? Why the very "they"
who are now in charge of shovelling more money to Wall Street. Forget that the bail out was initiated under Bush and passed with bipartisan support. Forget that as administered by Obama it seems to have acheived some measure of stability and some recoupment of taxpayer funds. Forget that virtually everyone said the negative employment effect of the financial crisis would peak well after the new administration came into office, but that the administration addressed this as its first Congressional request and got a bill passed over near unanimous Republiocan opposition.
I guess we should have seized the banks and put every dollar from the stimulus into a public works jobs program. That of course would have included the prison guard jobs needed to guard they who should have been punished by now.

are exclusively union plans.
Some stuff you can't make up!
But even if they were, a health care plan that costs $25,000 per year per person sounds like a plan that does as much damage to the idea of holding down health care costs as it does to benefiting the average union member who might have such a plan in his or her contract. Keep in mind that per capita health care spending in socialist Britain was just under $3,000 for 2007. Paid for out of taxes on income.
What is being talked about is taxing plans that cost above a figure almost 10 times the amount of total per person spending in a country most people here would argue has very good health care.

Some piece of shit stiffs a Salvation Army with a fake check for 25 grand. Cold spells do not disprove global warming. Lame Duckenegger will try to bring back 100,000 jobs, while the "liberal" media praises his Obama-esque speech in which he overlooks the tent cities and takes credit for saving us from financial ruin. Oh, and he wants to privatize prisons. I guess it was by looking the other way on exploitation of undocumented workers. The Pentagon uses the Cheney argument for keeping Gitmo closed. Picking someone's brain takes on a whole new meaning. Our airport "security" at work. Good luck, Gary.
I hate the phrase "states rights." States do not have rights. Persons have rights. States have powers. And they only have the powers rightly delegated to them by the consent of the governed. And that's what the friggen' case should be about. Whether a state is acting within the proper scope of its powers.
Will the Court uphold state power when it comes to gun control? To me the analysis should be quite simple: Is the law in question designed to protect each person's rights equally? If so, does it? And that should be that. If the law fails the tests, it should be struck down.
I favor a variety of regulations when it comes to gun control, but I do agree that the Constitution protects the right to bear arms via the Second and Ninth Amendments.
I wish we could stop talking about it in terms of states rights, as though a state is being oppressed by having its right to oppress its citizens infringed. We just need to ask whether any level of government is acting within the proper scope of its powers.
Everyone is equally entitled to the pursuit of happiness. Wasn't that once self evident?

As someone who has been through the CJ system, I've come to expect that most of my "personal" information isn't that at all. Hell, when I've been arrested lately, my boss and family are more likely to find out details online--charges, bail, court appearance dates, where I'll be living short-term, DL status, hair style, etc--well before any lawyer sees me. And what do you mean by "If all the students are suffering for the few who can afford to attend it" Is the school funding it? Which means it would be available to all who qualify. Or are the families of the students funding it? Which if that is the case how is it because of budget cuts?
Currently the many of the students enrolled in the AP classes can take them first year. Without the before and after school time, most of them would have to take a general class the first year then the AP class the next. So they spend a little more for one year, rather than have to pay for it for two. Which sounds most cost effective?
And for your other post about "serve a few at the expense of the majority". A few? About 600 students at that school take AP classes a year.
And I don't see anything 'elitist' just hard workers and over achievers. Hell you have kids who want to put in extra time at school and learn as much as they can, and that's a problem? Seriously?
I would rather have tax dollars spent on that, than what happens at my local HS(and I'm sure it's not the only one) where they hire people to come in and one on one with some of the underachievers to try to get their grades up. I knew one person that did it until they ended up quitting, the student they were assigned to could do the work, they just didn't care to. She was just bidding her time in school because she had to go. The Aides day was spent like this "put down the brush/makeup/etc. and do your work." repeated all day long. And from what I've heard that was the norm not the exception.
What sounds like the better use of limited funds? The hardworking student or the lazy bum? I have no problem with helping out those that need it and can benefit from it. I do have a problem with trying to help those that don't give a shit.

So why is it conservatives always argue the three R's: Readin', Ritin', Rithmetic?
(Hmmm...must be where the tea-baggers bad spelling comes from).
Last I checked Science doesn't start with an R.

Here's Richard Wolff explaining what's wrong with the current top down model and how to fix it by democratizing companies with a bottom up model. He also explains other economic topics such as derivatives, emerging market investments, etc.
