A Redditor got a letter from a friend he went to High School with who killed a police officer.
Our jails and prisons are horrible places. I fight tooth and nail to keep my clients out of them, especially when their so called crimes are merely consensual acts like drug use or prostitution.
Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy speaks about the issue occasionally. He has recognized the problem. Sad letter to read, but hardly surprising.
Oh, and . . . nice to see you xoites!

Thank you Karen. :)
If you haven't been keeping up, I thought I would let you know that my mother passed away and I'll be moving to Spokane soon.
Oh, Ron. Yes i heard. I was here the night it happened i think and sent you my condolences, but you must have left by them. I am sorry for your loss, Ron.
I hope you are doing okay.
I couldn't remember who all offered their condolences but I think I offerred a blanket thanks to all. How are you?
run, safer, or offer acceptable minimal standards of nutrition or other health and safety issues, let me assure you, from my experiences at some of the finer institutions across our fair land, they do not. It's late on the East Coast, so I won't go into detail, but I don't doubt the descriptions by the writer. And sadly, he'll likely live in these conditions, every day, for the rest of his life. Death will, tragically, be welcoming, that day he gets the spike or whatever method is deemed acceptably "humane" at the time.
Good to see you x. And props to Karen and LeftandLeft (and others here who haven't identified themselves as working in the legal defense system) for their work to make life a little better for those of us who find themselves on the inside of a cell, often for "crimes" committed only against themselves anyway. Like teachers, you are often way under-valued by too much of this country's populace.

Our whole Criminal InJustice System is seriously f'd up.
I spent several years as a homeless advocate working with my state ACLU fighting it.
Corrupt judges, lying cops, filthy conditions, no meaningful rehabilitation.
And "we" seriously think we can "help" other nations.

Yes, the "Enemy Belligerent" bill. As in, as long as we can give you a label, we can take away your rights. We're living on the Animal Farm folks, and the year 1984 is approaching.
Here in Oregon, they have a fun way to take away defendant's rights: just label what they're accused of not as "crimes" but as "violations." If you're charged with a misdemeanor, the prosecution can elect to treat it as a "violation," whereupon you no longer have the right to a jury trial, and can be convicted by a judge if the prosecution proves its case "by a preponderance of the evidence." (i.e. You have to prove you're innocent.) The only advantage for defendants is that you can't be put in jail upon conviction. Just fined up the wazoo, forced to do community service, and have a record follow you around for the rest of your life.

The dismissal of the misdemeanor is often brought by the prosecution shortly before trial. The Defendant seldom complains because a crime turns into a ticket, but, technically, I believe the prosecution must elect to proceed as a violation the first time it's up.

You can really tell how sad our media is when you watch RT. They actually do news and talk to you as if you are somewhat intelligent. RT is so much better than the drivel we get on a day to day basis in the U.S. major media. Good stuff.

One of the biggest and most important seed banks in the world is at risk of being replaced by a private housing development.
The facility near the Russian city of St Petersburg houses thousands of varieties of plants, not found anywhere else in the world.
During the Nazi's Siege of Leningrad the scientists working at the seed bank chose to starve to death instead of eating the seeds they were protecting.
Now the seed bank is threatened by a private housing development.

Why did this never make the news? Former CIA agent names JFK's killers on his death bed. E. Howard Hunt described himself as a "bench warmer" in the plot.

There was a big Rolling Stone article about that, but I don't seem to remember hearing about it anywhere else. I think many people have a problem with Hunt's son's credibility.
If a drone kills a child in Kandahar, do the crying parents make a sound?
I hadn't seen it before. I always wondered why someone connected to the killing wouldn't finally, on their deathbed, tell what happened. Prior to reading the article I figured it had to be someone (or group) strong enough to resist the might of the U.S. government. So it couldn't have been the mafia because we would have round them up, tried them, and probably executed them. I've never read anything on this directly, but figured it had to be the military. Magic Bullet my ass. Never in the history of man has a projectile performed in such a manner.
Anyhow, a bit of a surprise to see LBJ at the top.
Dems too scared to "shake down" the rich. Another day, another exploding oil platform off the Louisana coast...Yes, TIME, Obama being too liberal is the problem. Think Creationists will go after his disability, now? When's Obamacare supposed to kick in, again? Cop ignores girl with asthma, because she's brown.
Obama being too liberal? Not according to many of the posters here including myself. Bipartimanship will not work.
show here in Tampa (damn, I miss Sirius/XM in my last rental car...) That blowhard (like the rest of 'em)-- after gloating for several minutes about how Obama has angered much of the left-leaning blogosphere with many of his policy decisions and appointments-- didn't miss a beat when he brought in some other RW tool to discuss Obama's "most radical leftist agenda in the history of the Presidency."

I have actually blown up interviews like that before. Back when jobs were available and my back wasn't broken, lol. I was fully honest, allot of the time those assholes would tell me how much they would start me out at....then I would blow up on them. Boby Rahal, wanted to pay me just a tad above 18k a year...to be an auto-mechanic at a Toyota dealership, median is 34k.....they knew how hard I worked and how good I was....I told them to "suck my dick" in so many words, and left...I have burned almost every bridge around, I know my peers make from 50k to 85k....I was top of the line---and that is not a line of republican bullshit, I could take a bolt and tap threads with it, I could fix a bent bolt with smashed threads down one side, I could fabricate pieces of undercarriage out of junk metal for FORDS(nobody would even attempt this-I could do it), I could tear down a honda motor to put a T-belt in it in less than 15mins, take another half hour to put back together.. I could do an oil change and tire rotation in 15 mins.....I was unreal super skilled. I could work 10-12 hours get drunk sleep 4 and do it again and again.I was able to work like this from age 17-age 34 right up till they broke my back and tossed me in the dumpster....they paid me like I was a field slave picking cotton, I had to sleep in my car multiple times, 1 summer I spent with no shower......Nice christian people round these parts.
Ps. I am now registered Republican!!!! Woot on the winning team, yay.
I'll Sign this shit.
