Glenn Beck has been imploring his viewers this week to record the show and keep it and watch it and rewatch it so that they can absorb all the vital information it will contain, because it's rilly, rilly important.

The upshot: There are a bunch of radical left-wing Marxists who have been mainstreaming themselves through various civil-rights and community-organizing fronts who are all connected to President Obama.

The apparent nexus of this conspiracy is the Apollo Alliance, which describes itself thus:

The Apollo Alliance is a coalition of labor, business, environmental, and community leaders working to catalyze a clean energy revolution that will put millions of Americans to work in a new generation of high-quality, green-collar jobs. Inspired by the Apollo space program, we promote investments in energy efficiency, clean power, mass transit, next-generation vehicles, and emerging technology, as well as in education and training. Working together, we will reduce carbon emissions and oil imports, spur domestic job growth, and position America to thrive in the 21st century economy.

Woo. Sounds like a bunch of wild-eyed Marxist radicals to me. Their board, too, looks like a bunch of people who make their livings as capitalists -- though Beck wants to paint them all as "anti-capitalists."

One of the realities of conspiracy theories like this is that they rely not merely on guilt by association, but that they are themselves about hidden agendas. All conspiracy theories are fundamentally scapegoating narratives, and so the most fundamental aspect of them is who they are scapegoating. In this case, it's community organizers like Van Jones (named prominently in Beck's recent diatribes) and other minority civil-rights and environmental activists.

So what Beck isn't telling you is that the very people he's scapegoating -- particularly Jones' outfit, Color of Change -- have been leading the charge to strip Beck's show of advertisers in the wake of his outrageous attacks on President Obama as a "racist" and "someone who hates white people, white culture".

If Beck had an ounce of honesty in his body, he'd offer full disclosure: That the very organizations he's smearing as riddled with "Marxists" and "communists" and as fundamentally a bunch of "radicals" are the same organizations that have been hurting him and his show financially.

Incidentally, he's still losing advertisers, but can always stand to lose more.

Today, FWIW, we get Rush Limbaugh on Beck's show to lead his defense. We can only hope a hole in the time-space continuum does not open from the critical mass of so much wingnuttery on one show.

"All conspiracy theories are fundamentally scapegoating narratives"

That is an extremely broad brush you seem to be painting with there.

One might say that, "All 'Unified Field' type conspiracy theories," or "All Vague Conspiracy Theories," or "most generalized conspiracy theories are fundamentally scapegoating narratives."

But to say that it is true of ALL conspiracy theories is tantamount to saying conspiracies don't exist -- a preposterous and unsupportable claim, if ever there was one.

Certainly, the claim applies to anything I've seen from Glenn Beck and his fellow travelers, but still …

David's posts that may be aimed at undermining a very legitimate concern I have but have been unable to disclose for fear of..

“Why would anyone with a functioning brain believe this guy?”
Some guy with an eating disorder

Nothing to fear -- I don't mind being challenged. I'm not always able to explain my thinking fully in the posts, so I use a shorthand.

But let me direct you all to Chip Berlet's work on conspiracism and why serious progressives eschew it assiduously, because it pretty closely reflects my own thinking. I particularly agree with the sentiments of G. William Domhoff in his interview with Berlet:

Domhoff: Conspiracism is a disaster for progressive people because it leads them into cynicism, convoluted thinking, and a tendency to feel it is hopeless even as they denounce the alleged conspirators.

Conspiracism is so contrary to what most everyday people believe and observe that it actually drives people away because they sense the tinge of craziness to it.

What social psychologists who study social movements say is that a social movement definitely needs a clear and visible opponent that embodies the values that are opposed, and which can be vilified and railed against. But in opposition to the conspiracists, these opponents are readily identifiable and working through visible and legitimate institutions.

So, I would say that the opponents are the corporate conservatives and the Republican Party, not the Council on Foreign Relations, Bilderbergers, and Bohemians. It is the same people more or less, but it puts them in their most important roles, as capitalists and political leaders, which are visible and legitimate...If thought of this way, then the role of a CFR as a place to try to hear new ideas and reach consensus is more readily understood, as is the function of a social club as a place that creates social cohesion. Moreover, those understandings of the CFR and the clubs fit with the perceptions of the members of the elite.

David,

DHSmd "I have to Object to This.." (above) is obviously correct.

This post is good overall (as are all of your posts that I remember), but you went overboard when you said: "All conspiracy theories are fundamentally scapegoating narratives". This statement is, of course, a preposterous (obviously false) assertion. To believe this is to believe that all willful crimes involve only one person. Conspiracy is defined as the plan or intention of more than one person to commit a crime. Your use of the word “Scapegoating” implies that any description of a premeditated crime (involving more than one person) is false and is asserted only to blame the innocent. This is not only “crazy talk” but it is also destructive in that it is a “thought blocker” meme which tends to keep people from having “ears to hear”, or eyes to see when it might still be possible to prevent a given crime or others in the future.

The whistleblowers exposing the Bush administrations conspiracy to start a war of aggression (Iraq) by way of Lies, deception, and criminal fraud were dismissed with the technique of infecting people with this type of “thought blocker”.

You are right to point out Glenn Becks PSYOPS and concocted conspiracy claims, but your broad brush corrupts and subverts your otherwise valid analysis. While many have made this and similar preposterous assertions, it is dangerous and very destructive to do so.

Still a fan of yours,
Peace,
JK

Beck's "guest" is Phil Kerpen, a writer for the Fox Forum at FoxNews.com and a wonk for "Americans for Prosperity", a group that is almost entirely funded by oil interests. AFP also represents tobacco industry interests among others and is one of the organizing forces behind teabaggers and town hall protests over health care.

So much for "fair and balanced".

The damned beck. Cannot stand him.

I turned his show on 2 or 3 times this afternoon, but only for about 2 seconds a time.

I heard him tell us all to be "afraid."

Soon after that, when I turned him on again, he had some idiot from the Media Research Center (MRC). Now that scares the hell out of me. Brent Bozo Bozell is one of the scariest far right idiots I know of, and I don't want any of MRC's influence on this country.

By the way, I was up late last night watching TV when the news of Teddy's death came on. So I stayed up for another 3 hours watching coverage on CNN and MSNBC. Every now and then, I'd turn on Fox to see what they were doing. Sometimes, they had coverage; other times, they had reruns of other shows. One particular time I switched to Faux, it was very upsetting, very scary. It was a rerun of a beck show, and he was interviewing malkin. Really pissed me off that Faux, instead of covering Kennedy, had two hate mongers talking with each other.

Kinda like watching two dogs fucking right? You just can't keep your eyes off them...

General Jack D. Ripper's picture

Well, the two dogs doing their thing is quite interesting, and I'd take the time to watch the whole thing....might even film it.

But the two jackals on tv is something I can't stand...makes me sick if I watch more than 2 seconds.

Sure hope so..it would be poetic justice of the highest magnitude... the bush propaganda machine bites the dust - what a great headline in the NY Post...

Are beck and sarah gonna announce their candidacy soon??

You can all try to make light of this "fool", but the day is coming when another one of his loyal believers goes apes**t and starts killing people. I think this is exactly what he wants! He took a week off so that he could invent a new conspiracy and demonize the Obama administration even more. He's got Limbaugh on today to egg him on. They're raving about how the fairness doctrine will be slipped in the backdoor just to silence them. They really need to get back on their meds.

For the past few months, I've been sending emails to Fox and O'Reilly, telling them that the guy is dangerous. I send them to O'Reilly because O'Reilly has the guy on once a week and makes light of beck's craziness.

I just sent beck an email, telling him that I am very afraid.....not of that which he warns, but rather that he had as a guest some guy from the MRC....and that I don't want that right wing organization influencing anything in this country.

I also told beck that I was afraid of the fact that people are showing up with guns, notably an assault rifle, at public events with Obama.

Last night, I sent O'Reilly an email telling him that one of these days, one of beck's followers is going to show up with a gun at a public event, and things will get out of hands.

Seriously, beck is mentally ill. His mother and a brother committed suicide. It runs in the family.

do you ever get a response?

General Jack D. Ripper's picture

I've never gotten a response from beck or oreilly on the beck issues, but O'Reilly has read at least a half a dozen or so of my emails on air on other issues the past few years.

I've also gotten responses from the likes of Rove, Gingrich, and others.....so some of these emails do get through.

These two sound like kids anticipating a raid from a rival treehouse gang.

But Wacko in Waco is right. They WILL get people killed.

maggot actually believe the shit he says? Beck is another example of the fact that Roe v. Wade was passed too late!

...I reject stupidity.

I reject clowns.

I reject Glenn Beck, stupid CLOWN.

One thing is obvious, one doesn't have to like Barack Obama to despise Glenn Beck.

Ha!

Fox should keep Glenn Beck churning out the truthiness and dunderheaded clog-charts and watch the station implode... That would be newsworthy and worth a post or two...

Make no motto of love that worships war

hahahahahahahaha Look at that picture -- no need to even turn on the Sound. How long has it been since American schools used real BLACKBOARDS? I know when my children were in elementary school (20 years ago), they already used whiteboards. Chalk? Chalk Erasers? More than 20 YEARS ago.

Yet, Beck must use the props his audience will recognize. Too funny!

I was reading comments on the story about the Colorado RNC demanding an apology for the vandalism at the DNC and the DNC linking it to the health care debate. The comments were the ususal - a lot of Acorn was put up to doing it so the Republicans could be blamed.

Then a couple of people mentioned this Apollo Alliance and I thought it had something to do with the Apollo Theater - I couldn't figure it.

I'm so impressed with what Color of Change has accomplished. Corporate America has to ask themselves if they want to be associated with the violent rhetoric coming from Glenn Beck and others on the Right especially in light of the latest report from the Southern Poverty Law Center.

The pendulum needs to swing to the left now; it’s been on the corporatist fascist right for too long. The rich got so much richer under Shrub!

Alcohol + cocaine + mercury in water + paranoid rasict projection + masturbatory illusions of grandeur = Glenn Beck

waterboarding for jesus's picture

Glenn would be just fine on the 3 AM time slot on some local cable access channel perhaps. Giving him prime airtime on a national network is just reckless and wrong. FOX is playing with fire.
Beck is a certifiable paranoid schizophrenic and a time bomb. He has attracted a significant number of fellow lunatics and others who should really know better. He babbles incendiary gibberish and it will have an affect.
This is scary shit.
