Apropos of nothing in particular. I just thought this was a cool story. More here and here.
Just don't let Sarah "White Huntress" Palin hear about this, OK?

I am amazed!
Fox commentators remarking how cool it is that the Blue Whale seems to be returning from the edge of extinction due to the ban on killing them - implicitly praising the Endangered Species Act.
Are they allowed to do that?
Or have we maybe found common ground?
That is unheard of at Fox!
Blue whales are such beautiful creatures. I like stories like this.
I admit, it's nice, and unexpected from Fox News.. at first glance. Except it's clearly a story which soothes viewers' concerned about the environment, telling them that things are getting better, nature will work recover, etc. Just last night I saw this story http://www.ktvu.com/news/19499224/detail.html (ironically on a local Fox station), painting a more sober picture of the state of whales, describing how their navigation abilities are disrupted, affecting their migration routes. It doesn't take too much searching to find similar stories.
The story on the site is just another Fox News distraction, convincing well-meaning people that things are fine and will work themselves out.
Fox is trying to clean up it's image somewhat.
"it's clearly a story which soothes viewers' concerned about the environment, telling them that things are getting better, nature will work recover, etc"
exactly
...but what do you want to bet that this is probably just the opening salvo in a propaganda campaign to push for calls to de-protect not only blue whales, but all whales, and to resume massive commerical whaling once again? Of course the intrpid crew at FOX will be leading the effort to
manipulateshape public opinion on the issue.to the gym with my son tonight. Schill O'Liely was on, I couldn't hear what was being said, but close captioning was on so I could read it. My son and I were counting the ads for medicine and fear mongering (read home alarm systems, etc.). That hypocritical asshole had the nerve to question why Elizabeth Edwards wrote a book and then said, "well, it's not like she needs the money." I guess that applies to him as well, why does he write books, it's not like he needs the money. My son is going to purchase a Sweet Jesus I Hate Bill O'Reilly shirt and wear it, should be interesting.
I wonder what kind of reaction he's going to get! Hopefully no elderly people yell at him...
yeah, he gets a lot of looks and comments (derogatory) anyway. He's a big kid 6'1" - 2" and about 220 lbs, blond dreads, some of which are colored or have rasta wraps, and also likes to wear his Dead Kennedys shirt, which gets lots of comments. He's a good little liberal, but is still pretty open and has friends that are good little convservatives. We'll see how it goes.
It's on FOX, as soon as Sarah sees it, she'll be riding shotgun with the Coast Guard, harpoon in hand
What do you bet that Hannity and/or O'Reilly call for rescinding the ban on whale hunting and removal of Blue Whales from the Endangered Species List?
After all, they're back in their old stamping grounds off Alaska. Time to kill some whales!
... the astronauts drank their own reprocessed urine. Coors Bottling is interested in the process with the intent to create a new product. Tentative product name: YOORS.
Rimshot.
It's too late, she's already ordered her helicopter, she going to get them just like the wolves! What a woMAN

Since David seems to be fascinated with the nut jobs on the far right, I'm curious to see what he has to say about these assholes. Attacks on the nut jobs in the muslim community start in 3, 2, 1...., well, maybe not.

C-4 plastic explosives are now "weapons of mass destruction"?
Couldn't be the stinger missiles - they're the anti-aircraft missiles.
And what a coincidence. Right on the eve of Obama's National Security Address which (just coincidentally) will be followed immediately by THE DICK Cheney addressing the American Enterprise Institute on (you guessed it!) National Security!!
What a coincidence!! I wonder if DICK will mention these arrests in his speech ....
The coincidence factor was the first thing that came to my mind when I heard about this, this morning. This and the report that one out of seven who have been released from Gitmo have returned to battle. Not sure how they verify that.
c-4 can be considered a weapon of mass destruction, what would 10K do at the bottom of a large high rise lets say the empire state building, and the stinger, what would happen if lets say they took down a large aircraft shortly after takeoff in the city? Hell look what Timothy McVeigh did in OK city with fertilizer.
where they had to torture anybody to catch these guys. Did I miss something?
... I knew we'd end up with a catch, and the fact that the suspects purchases INERT weapons and that they were taken in by an FBI agent POSING as a terrorist only confirms how ridiculous this stuff is.
We are not finding 'homegrown terrorists' - we're finding idiots who don't know how to build bombs, don't know how to procure weapons, and don't have operational security. For cryin' out loud, they couldn't even establish the bona fides of the FBI agent!
And this is what we're sacrificing our constitutional protections for? This is why we're waterboarding suspects? Because we're afraid of some wannabe Jihadists?
This sounds so much like the Miami story a few years back. Only this time the FBI went beyond where they went in Miami, this time they sold them the weapons before they arrested them. Now they just happen to bust the story the night before cheney is going to try to scare the country one more time.
that the "suspects" are idiots. And also about sacrificing out rights.
I know that subject is a stretch but here is my reasoning behind it. The right always talks about how "liberals" hate America. Almost always its BS but like the stopped clock even they can be right. Would you guys prefer that the FBI had just let these guys shop around until they found someone that could sell them REAL bombs?! In fact this case should be celebrated as a victory for the Obama administration. But no some of you have to start jumping up and down and whining about waterboarding even though NO ONE IN THIS CASE WAS TORTURED and no one had their civil rights abridged. This is why so many middle of the road americans can't relate to the far left even though the left really is arguing for their interests.
One of the cable channels, National Geographic, the learning channel or SOMEONE had a program on the Blue Whale. Amazing.
And Dave - your book came today. So far it's easy reading. Not too far into it yet. I'll tell you what I really think when get into the content better.
Or maybe it was the BBC
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YtC-VagE4Y
Gave a lot of important context to what's going on right now. Everybody should read it.
And I was shocked, shocked I tell you, to see a Fresno eliminationist made it into the book... *sigh*
I saw a dozen Beluga whales in Turnagain Arm just a couple days ago.
Now I can go watch Democracy Now! and Grit TV or read....
It was on National Geographic. Totally awe-inspiring.
I enjoy making bizarre pieces of jewelry and such that make people step back and think, "WTF?!?!?!?!"
So, my brain is going in an especially disgusting (but nonetheless eyecatching direction tonight). I am thinking that I can create a great pair of earrings cum conversation piece with a couple pics of Blowhard O'Liar's ugly mug, and some clippings from a vintage Middle Eastern food cookbook that is falling apart... (falafel, hint hint)
I need to top myself after the beaded bookmark that used a vintage Midol ad, lol...
You are certainly creative!
*
Zeds here. Sleep tight!
*
Got to put the pooches to bed, it's past their bedtime, lol...
I'll be sure to post a link to a pic of the finished earrings sometime Friday I think...it takes time for the epoxy that seals the mini collage into the frame to dry and cure...
Nitey nite! :)
I haven't started yet, really, but the project is getting weirder... I like to include something with a little more dimension in the mini collages, so later today I'm off to buy a loofah to take teeny tiny clippings from that'll be in the collage...
early on, when dave asked lutz how we were going to fix the mess, lutz replied that one of the things we had to do was lowere our standards so we could compete with the cheap manufactures...
he had some reasonable things to say, but mostly a bunch of things that only a wealthy privileged snob would think of...
kind of a jerk...
One of the Gitmo detainees will be tried in New York. Trump likes to exaggerate his wealth. Rush doesn't like MSNBC talking about him. The Army rewarded KBR for electrocuting our troops. The Pentagon was unprepared for a flu attack. Hey, Catholic Church, leave them kids alone! Eminem gives Detroit a free concert. A woman would rather kidnap her sick child than give him necessary chemo. Police abuse at L.A. rail stations. New deadly strain of pneumonia. SCOTUS is fine with de-clawing anti-Enron legislation. Abuse @ a TX disability school. Putin hates gay rights. GM hates cars made in America. NK hates American journalists.
Another school shooting. The GOP snuck a guns in parks rider to the the credit card reform bill. College graduates can't find work. Chicago bans baby bottles w/ BPA. The decline of the GOP. Wyeth allegedly ripped off Medicaid. What does the CIA know, period? The GOP's attack on Pelosi might backfire.
worse, lots worse.
From the article: "In one case, a New York school confined a 9-year-old with learning disabilities to a "small, dirty room" 75 times in six months for whistling, slouching and hand-waving. In another, a Florida teacher's aide gagged and duct-taped five misbehaving children to their desks; and police say a 14-year-old boy died when a special-education teacher in Texas lay on top of the student when he would not stay seated. Police ruled it a homicide, but a grand jury rejected criminal charges."
to know what the classroom setup was in these situations. Were they resource rooms, were the kids included in the general population, it would be interesting to note. My husband teaches high school special ed and just last week one of his students, a child with Fragile X, called him an asshole because he wouldn't let him continue to touch another student's fat rolls (I'm not kidding). Now, someone who took themselves too seriously might have gotten really ugly with this kid. My husband asked him to go out in the hall with him to talk. The kid refused, so my husband had his aid take everyone else out into the hall and my husband patiently explained to him that talking to someone like that can get you hurt and it's not acceptable anywhere, especially in a classroom. Someone who wasn't calm and rational and had self control could hurt a kid like this.
husband is so collected in those situations.
I think people who have a problem handling such scenarios though should probably not be teaching children with those sorts of disabilities...
special ed children can be difficult, my wife does it some in her job. But what would the aid or your husband do if the child refused to go into the hall and became violent when they attempted to get him there? And how did the aid take him there if he wasn't willing to go? I am not condoning child abuse, but there are children and adults who can not reason or be reasoned with and at times must be physically restrained, for their safety and the safety of others.
And as for the child who was isolated in a "small dirty" room, I have as friends a couple who has a autistic son, when he gets upset placing him in a quiet room can help settle him down, excessive external stimuli can and will upset or aggravate his condition.
And I'll see if I can find a link but there was a teacher who was suspended and I believed fired for taping a student to their chair, according to the student and his classmates it was done in good nature, the child would of been able to get free if needed and was not harmed, yes the teacher probably went a bit overboard but he did not harm the student or endanger them, the student even co-operated with it. What would of harmed the student more, being "taped" to a chair or being suspended or expelled for insubordination? Without knowing the entire story I have to withhold judgment.
Tim sez: "What would of harmed the student more, being "taped" to a chair or being suspended or expelled for insubordination?"
From the article again: "In another, a Florida teacher's aide gagged and duct-taped five misbehaving children to their desks"
You don't think that's child abuse, Tim? I'll reiterate again, if there are people who are ill prepared to understand and work with disabled children without resorting to abusive tactics such as this, they should not be working with them.
They are all our children, and they don't deserve that kind of treatment just because they are not "able-minded."
does it say the five children that were taped were special ed? Yes it was in a article about special ed children but haven't you know the media to sneak something in that supports their point of view, whether or not it actually applies? The one I referred to was a "normal" teen not special ed, and depending on their disability yes it could be child abuse or it could not, I know a child or three who have been diagnosed with add or adhd that were honestly kids that had never had any discipline in their lives. But they were diagnosed with it and given drugs. One of which was taken away from his parents and put in a moderately strict household, off his meds for six months with non abusiveness discipline he was a normal child. Yes special children have special needs, but too many children are now diagnosed as special.

if C&L would put the bouncing Rush on the timer for videos instead of the C&L logo.
Peace.
It as been a while l&g but I am back, what the hell that means I dont have a clue. Here are 3 things that I am grateful about:
1 that the repubs are going after Pelosi. Lets have that talk about waterboarding and who gave the order.
2 That Dick is the talking head of the repubs. The most hated man in the world is your talking head, thank you.
3 Sarah Palin is the choice of the far right to face Obama in the next election. Yeah, crazy and stupid.

The Credit Care Bill S. 627 Is A Sham Without Usury Protection
The headline today read "Reform may mean good card users pay more",
even as the Senate passed their totally phony credit card bill, S.
627. The one thing that actually mattered, an amendment to limit
interest rates to a very generous 15 percent was killed. With the
government bailing out some of these same companies, and giving them
money for zero interest, how greedy can they possibly get? Oh, but
they had no problem tagging on a totally unrelated Wild Bill Hickok
in our national parks provision.
How stupid do they think we are? What we are left with is a cosmetic
makeover which will continue to bless outrageous interest rates with
no real protection for the American people at all, another charade of
reform which actually changes nothing of substance. In fact, the bill
expressly gives credit card companies an additional 9 months to rip
us off without any new restrictions whatsoever. Congress needs to
know they are not fooling us one little bit on this one.

We're going to need some Presidential signing statements: Climate Change Odds Much Worse Than Thought - http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/05/...
The most comprehensive modeling yet carried out on the likelihood of how much hotter the Earth's climate will get in this century shows that without rapid and massive action, the problem will be about twice as severe as previously estimated six years ago - and could be even worse than that.
The study uses the MIT Integrated Global Systems Model, a detailed computer simulation of global economic activity and climate processes that has been developed and refined by the Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change since the early 1990s.
To answer deniers/extinctionists/'skeptics'....the reason for urgency is because we've wasted 30 years and now we're behind the 8 ball... Now you know why James Hansen is pissed at the concessions in Waxman-Markey... We've reached our credit limit (greed) on our planet's card....
No $hit Hall of Fame inductee: Republicans Misrepresent Cost of Climate Bill - http://www.treehugger.com/files/2009/05/cap-t...
As the American Clean Energy and Security Act (ACES) moves through Congress, its opponents are spamming the country's airwaves and inboxes in the hope of putting enough misinformation out into the world that the public will turn against the bill. The latest example is an email from the Republican Study Committee saying that centerpiece of the bill, an industry-wide cap on carbon emissions, will annually cost each America family $3,100. The only problem is that the claim isn't true.
Some in Congress have been peddling this lie for months, including House Republican Leader John Boehner, ever since a MIT study came out with an analysis of cap and trade. The report's author has since asked that his study not be misapplied.
In two recent letters to House Republican Leader John Boehner, MIT's Reilly asked that the NRCC stop using the "misleading" figure, noting that MIT's estimates are less than one thirtieth of what the NRCC is claiming. "A correct estimate of that cost ... for the average household just in 2015 is about $80 per family, or $65 if more appropriately stated in present value terms discounted at an annual 4% rate," he said.
The EPA has weighed in as well. They analyzed ACES, also known as the Waxman-Markey bill, and said the bill would cost households less than $150 a year.
According to Lisa Jackson’s number-crunching crew at EPA, households would pay between $98 and $140 a year through 2050 for overhauling the country’s energy landscape. Economy-wide, the impacts also seem pretty modest. It will take until 2030 for the national GDP to reach $22.6 trillion; if cap-and-trade is passed, that will just take three months longer.
DISASTER WATCH: Obama May Slide High Court to Right - http://www.consortiumnews.com/2009/052009a.html
One of the most depressing aspects of the Obama era is how he has gotten away with so many centrist/corporatist appointees with such muted criticism from the left. That better change when it comes to crucial LIFE-LONG judicial appointees. -- Whom Obama chooses for these posts is arguably more important than his choices of Biden or Gates or Hillary Clinton.
On this topic (like others), Obama speaks eloquently. . . out of both sides of his mouth. In revealing comments to the Detroit Free Press last October about his models for Supreme Court picks, Obama praised liberal lions Thurgood Marshall and William Brennan of the Warren Court as “real heroes of mine.” Then he added: “But that doesn’t necessarily mean that I think their judicial philosophy is appropriate for today.”

A military attorney who represented a now-freed Guantanamo detainee told CNN on Wednesday that waterboarding is only 'the tip of the iceberg.' ... (Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Yvonne) Bradley told CNN that when she was first assigned to represent (Binyam) Mohamed, she did not question he was a hardened terrorist, because 'my government was saying these were the worst of the worst.'
However, she now says, 'There’s no reliable evidence that Mr. Mohamed was going to do anything to the United States.'" (VIDEO AT BOTTOM)
Remote Warfare Radically Changes the Front Lines - http://www.commondreams.org/view/2009/05/20-7
The use of Unmannned Aerial Vehicles, or UAVs, by the US is on the rise, with machines reportedly piloted from air force bases in Virginia and Nevada as they go to war in the Middle East. But experts like military adviser David Kilcullen are questioning the strategic value of drones to the countries that deploy them in light of the anger they are causing on the ground.
He says that since 2006 US drone attacks have killed 14 senior Al Quaeda operatives and 700 civilians in the same region of Pakistan fuelling extremism. Furthermore, he says Pashtun culture sees honor in person-to-person combat, and "using robots from the air ... looks both cowardly and weak."

How much smaller can the climate denial tent get? We’re about to find out. With companies as diverse as Nike, Johnson & Johnson and Ford Motor Company having joined the call for comprehensive clean energy & climate legislation, the Republican Party has come up with its counter-strategy: “To fight bill, GOP turns on business,”
Since denial has failed with businesses, Republican leadership is moving to anger, lashing out at businesses who’ve been allies for generations. And without the claim that they’re protecting business by blocking clean energy legislation, what’s left for the Grand Old Party’s leaders to claim? That they’re protecting polluters?
Or that, science and jobs be damned, we’re the captains of this here denial ship and we’re going down with it? The GOP Tent is starting to look more like a bunker.

(quick memory refresh: Susie Madrak has been blogging about the endangered Darby Library in Pennsylvania and its money needs. I was moved enough that I wrote the library director and got her permission to start a fundraising shop on Etsy.com selling my handmade bookmarks and such w/ all proceeds to go to the library, etc.)
Just a few days ago I Paypal'd the library some more proceeds from the fundraiser, and just now I've gotten this acknowledgement email from the library:
"It's great to learn that so many people want to help preserve our history and support the mission of the Darby Library Company to provide public library service. By your help and others we have raised close to $10,000."
Nearly $150 of that 10K comes from the Etsy fundraiser, I'm very proud to say. I am totally doing the snoopy dance right now that the library is getting some of the help it needs.
