Absolutely stunning is Germantown, a section with strong, successful, educated, black middle-class professional presence in numbers that are quite surprisingly large. Quite anomaly in the city and the state.

i happened to catch hannity (i was at a place where both tv's were tuned to fox). he was "interviewing" rove. What a halloween nightmare. I swear, my blood pressure goes up just listening to those voices.
within a few minutes, all i heard was "socialist", denying journalists seats on his airplane, khalidad, ayers, and mindless people listening shaking their heads in agreement.
why do so many establishment tune their tv's to fox? i try to get them to tune to more middle of the road networks like CNN. but they always go back to fox.

I know the drill. I go to the airport and it is almost always painless. Now, if they ever adopt those electronic taser bracelets they are talking about, I won't fly any longer. If I lose my houses, so be it.
Plus, I get paid well. AND I like to travel (well, I like to be in other places...I could live without the flying part since I am afraid to fly...I may share some of my hysterical Joanne Freaks Out on a Plane stories sometime), so going to sometimes exotic places rocks.

Here’s one of my most recent freak out stories:
I was flying out to Cali. I had just flown out there and back two or three weeks prior on the same plane in pretty much the same seat - rear of the plane at the window seat directly across from the Flight Attendant (FA) in her jump seat.
So I am in the back, looking out the window staring at the engine…and it’s not spinning.
I asked the FA: Isn’t that thing supposed to spin?
FA: Oh, it will once we start going.
We start going.
Me: Isn’t that thing supposed to spin????
FA: Oh, it will.
Me: IT’S NOT SPINNING!!!! ISN’T IT SUPPOSED TO SPIN???
FA: It will once we get on the runway.
We’re taxiing down the runway.
Me: DON’T YOU THINK YOU SHOULD CALL THE CAPTAIN??? IT’S NOT SPINNING? ISN’T IT SUPPOSED TO SPIN????
Now, Joanne has tears running down her face, looking rapidly from the FA to the engine and back, over and over again.
I thought for sure we were going to crash on take off.
So we lift off…and now I am quietly hysterical (I have gotten really good at being hysterical quietly because it is so damned embarrassing!) I have tears flowing down my face and I am still looking rapidly between her and that fucking engine.
About 2 minutes into takeoff, this guy behind me says, “I don’t think it spins on this type of airplane.”
I thought to myself, NOW YOU SAY SOMETHING!!
When the FA unbuckled her seat belt, before even fully standing up, she immediately reached into her drawer and handed me one of those little bottles of vodka.
I drank it down straight out of the bottle.
(I should say that my periodic fear of flying isn't always like that...it comes and goes. Most flights I am just mildly uncomfortable. I have control issues, I suppose. I always get on the plane and look at the people in the cockpit for that Just Got Laid glow. I want happy pilots. Sometimes I share that with the FA's who always crack up hysterically.)

Flying is Asia is great! Security is civilized. The airlines are good: full service on all flights (free hot food and drink, even on a 90 minute flight from Korea to Japan), and planes always leave on time-- plus service with a smile, and anything for your comfort. Again, why is America #1????? Don't believe it.

Although most people say it's mandatory to vote in Australia, it's actually not. It IS mandatory to turn up to vote, to have your name ticked on the list as turning up. If you don't want to vote, it's up to you. You can take the ballot papers and write whatever you want on them, which includes not voting.
It's splitting hairs, but it's good to get it right.
Having said the above, the system in Australia is spectacular compared to the one in the US. We don't wait in long lines, there's polling places all over the place - several in each suburb or town - and it's civil and very easy. No electronic machines and there's scrutineers that watch the counting.
It's a joy to vote in Australia. Our government is not always a joy, though. Our last Prime Miniature, John Howard, was a disgrace. We now have a far better man that we trust and respect a lot more and he speaks Chinese (which may come in handy!)
Here in Korea, everyone gets election day OFF. In Canada we can ask for half a day off, and employers MUST comply! It's the law.

When I think of the likely outcomes of the next week, I often find myself chuckling out loud. But when I think of the months and years to come, my mood turns quite sour, indeed.
Why? Because, regardless of who wins this "election," the Ghost of McPalin is going to haunt this country mercilessly for decades to come. The Specter of Xenophobia has been allowed to fully escape, now, from Pandora's Hell-Box. If the election is stolen again, as is still quite possible, that Specter will ravage the country under its newfound momentum. If the will of the people prevails, that's great, but make no mistake -- the Spectre is still very much on the loose, and as we all know too well, it is dangerously reactionary. All the more so, now.
Either way, it's going to be ugly. And brutal. And I, for one, am thinking how best to make sure that I do nothing that might make it worse, even in the smallest of ways.
And I'd like to ask each of you to take the time to consider that as well. Be the change you want to see in the world, yes. But first, ask yourself just exactly what kind of change that should be. Do you want an escalation of the mindless hatred we now see unleashed upon us. If not, how will you make sure that you will not contribute to that escalation?
These are the questions I'll be trying hard to ask myself in the weeks, months and years to come. I hope you will too.

there's quite a difference between indulging in a little troll-baiting, on the one hand, and laughing mockingly while throwing chicken blood on a gathering of frenzied xenophobes, on the other.
But I have this internal issue with liars. I have zero tolerance and less than zero mercy.
But over the years, I have come to know that the attempt to police the behavior of others is a fool's errand, and, more important, when in comes to policing liars, there is only one for whom I am responsible: the one in the mirror.
IOW, I already have a full-time job. But I do have to remind myself of that. Frequently.
I do not lie...I rarely ever have.
I was raised by parents who encouraged me to always tell the truth. I was almost never punished for it and I am certain that during my teenage years I was far more truthful than they would have ever desired.
They toughed it out.
And I learned a great deal about the value of truth growing up.
I started off with an "advatage": due to the very wiring of my brain, I was ill-suited ever to be a successful liar. But I was routinely punished for telling the truth, and that made me a liar, regardless. The fact that I have always been a piss-poor liar is, I can tell you, a mixed blessing.

I could be a very good liar. I am Sarah Bernhardt. When I first started doing training and speaking, I was not totally comfortable. Even after doing the same thing for more than two years, I would get nervous every time. I used to call it Going into Actress Mode. One time I had to speak before more than 300 people - still relatively early on. Talk about an out of body experience.
Now, I could speak in front of the UN and not think twice of it.
That never worked for me in public speaking. The only way I could deliver an effective talk was to, first, know the material inside and out, backwards and forwards -- and then not prepare, even in the slightest.
But neither does it work for me in Life™, where it is generally a life-or-death imperative. The Typical Male Co-worker role, for example, is something I could never do. But the only way you can get by without it, in the white-male-dominated workforce, is by playing the Biggest Mutherfvcker On The Block role.
No can do.
So, I live in a hole by the shore of Walden pond ... so to speak.
If I could live anywhere, it would be on the side of a mountain with no one near me. I would love a place where I could walk outside starkers and not have to worry about anyone seeing me.
I don't do the political bullshit in corporate America well. Where I am now is a glorious place. Very small company that actually gives a shit about us and where our input matters.
I'm the proverbial monk-in-a-cave ... except that my "cave" is on the ninth floor of a downtown highrise. Fortunately, it's a situation where teh neighborlies leave me well enough alone. Most people are terrified of being alone, but for me, it's the opposite. Too much social interaction, and I crumble into a heap.
I've worked for a small 5-person business, a mammoth corporate dictatorship, and about everything between, but just can't make it work for any length of time. For me, it's either self-employment, or I can be compost.

I cannot imagine living in a high rise. I lived in an apartment growing up (but it was like 1600 sq ft) and only a three flat, but I loathe the cement jungle.

But now, I'm back "home" in Springfield, Missouri. And as luck would have it, from my window here, I can see the very high-school football stadium where Obama will be speaking at 9:00pm tonight (Sat.). I doubt I'll be attending (due to my crowd-o-phobia), even though it's less than a mile away.
I'm not a monk, I'm more a hermit. My life was once a non-stop social whirlwind. I can do both. I live in a big city, crammed in like a sardine, but find ways to be alone, if not physically, I do it mentally. Metro Seoul is about 23,000,000 and I live dead centre, yet I'm very calm and take it in stride.
