Baucus Watch, Part XV
What’s the senator hiding in his bill?

By Trudy Lieberman here

Trudy Lieberman has done a stellar job in her serial reporting on the Congressional Health Care looming fiasco. In this latest piece she shows that the Baucus Senate Finance Committee is set to release only conceptual language before the committee vote. They WON'T report what is actually in the bill.

In other words, the committee expects to vote for a pig in a poke, hoping that the public will go along with whatever emerges when Baucus et al fill in the blanks. A representative of a prominent health plan told me last week he had been visiting with members of Congress over the summer recess and was astonished to learn that members did not know what was in the bills they will be asked to vote on. Massachusetts senator John Kerry explained it this way: “Let’s be honest about it, most people don’t read the legislative language.”

How is this any way for Congress to conduct the peoples’ business? It isn’t, but it’s a good way for lobbyists to conduct their business. Gosh! A ‘conceptual’ bill will give them almost carte blanch to insert words that move the legislation in ways that please the organizations they represent. From their perspective, how much better can it get?

As for not reading the legislative language—suppose some news organization wants to hire an expert to parse the bill so it can explain to its audience what lies buried in all the verbiage. (Hey, that’s not a bad idea!) Or maybe members of the AARP want to know whether they will be charged four times the rate a younger person will have to pay for health coverage, or only twice as much. Or maybe all those people who will now have to dig into their budgets to pay for coverage—or face a tax penalty—will want to know what happens if they don’t pay the fine. Can they go to jail?

I am expecting a big shaft.

Don't you think we should wait until the four bills are merged? It's unlikely the Baucus bill will go thru as is. Not unlikely, impossible. That's not how Congress works. And I'm certain you know that. You're no dummy. Actually, you're one smart cookie.

You are very kind.

The article refers to process in the Finance Committee, they are the King Pins, it is the gang of six that is ruling the roost.

I am not optimistic.

If the information were in front, then you could start shooting at the details early.

Again, what comes out of the Fin Comm is one bill. And after all the crap over the lszttwo months, I highly doubt that their "work" will be IT. I'm sure we will see significant changes.

a sound mind and somewhat positive attitude returns.

Significant changes perhaps, but will they be for the better.

With this Corporate Congress I am a perma-bear.

Remember, Baucus had the single payer advocates ARRESTED.

This is a seriously defective anti-democratic process.

I'm with you. They won't let the public see their shaft until it's over. That's their MO. Just place the lance and quietly walk away, if that doesn't work, sig the progressives against each other. Rahmie does it all the time, and since he and bro have too, too, too, 'influence' going in this sneaky, low, underhanded deal that will become a fact accompli before we know what happened. PUKIE MO and they never appologize, nor take responsibility. Spoiled, sociopathic brats that's what the so-called 'Villagers' are just like King Geo, and especially ChickenCheney.

If Corporations Cannot Vote, Should They Have the Right to Spend Money in Elections?

Damien Hoffman here

According to UC Irvine Law School Dean Erwin Chemerinsky, the nation’s leading Constitutional Law expert, “Previously the Supreme Court upheld the ability of the government to restrict corporate expenditures in political campaigns. Now it appears there are five votes on the Court — Chief Justice Roberts, Justice Scalia, Justice Kennedy, Justice Thomas, and Justice Alito — who want to overrule those precedents.”

Although corporations have stuffed cash into tons of loopholes such as Political Action Committees, a change in the current law would allow corporations to siphon off money from their wealth-creating machines and directly turn politicians into outsourced independent contractors. If you are pissed about the financial crisis and what Washington allowed to happen, you ain’t seen nothing yet.

this just piss's me off to no end!

Won't be discussing this on the news tomorrow....

More than a few people think that Ron Paul has at least a crack or two in his pot.

But when Alan Grayson says audit the Fed, in my booklet, that is something to notice. The hearing the other day was very interesting.

So is this interview by Damien Hoffman

Exclusive Interview: Congressman Alan Grayson Talks Fed Transparency and Missing Money

here

Damien: Congressman, while we are waiting for a Fed audit, does anyone know what the Fed has been doing given that they have not fulfilled their government delegated duties as listed on the Federal Reserve website?

Congressman Grayson: They are performing a truly remarkable, surreptitious transfer of wealth from public to private hands. They are taking their ability to print money and shore up failed banks. They are simply stuffing money into the pockets of private interests.

In the case of the half a trillion dollars, they stuffed the money into foreign private pockets. In the case of another $230 billion, it has been tracked as a secret bailout to Citicorp in the US. The fact is the Federal Reserve continuously puts all of us on the hook for decisions they make to play favorites with private interests to the tune of trillions of dollars.

Heavy language. Only a heavyweight can speak like that and remain standing for long. I am all for Alan Grayson in his current role.

Here, how's this?

Someone's been munching on eggy-wegs and longticks of toast.

The unemployment rate for young Americans has exploded to 52.2 percent -- a post-World War II high, according to the Labor Dept. 9/28

what future, if any, has been left for this generation of young people?
Greed, of corporate execs & politicians, has ensured that their descendants have next to nothing to work with...and possibly no habitable planet to work upon.

is happy to bringup the bad news and lay it at Obama's feet.

Their decendants will be fine...money can buy almost anything. It's the rest of us that are fucked.

recently that said America is likely to end up with a permanent unemployment rate of about 9-10%, like much of Europe and much of the world. I've often wondered if the plan wasn't to bring us down to the rest of the world's playing field. Looks like it's going to happen, planned or not.

Is the dark side controlling things planned? Yes.

Where did you hear that noise?

Europe has no such thing.

Unemployment Rates in the European Union:
Netherlands 2.7%
UK 6.1%
Germany 7.2%
France 7.9%
Spain 14.4%

And they use the real numbers, that would be U6 to you.

You have always had a similar unemployment rate as Europe, the only reason you believe otherwise is because your reporting of unemployment in the US has been rigged to make the numbers look better.

Use the U6 and you'll see that the US is worse off than even Spain at the moment.

In fact, comapred to you the job scene over here is looking pretty damned rosie.

France's unemployemnt kinda' hovers around 9%, with a few dips here and there. There was a great article that said "France's unemployment DROPS to 8.2%."

Germany's is much higher than you claim.

Spain's is a lot worse.

The UK and Netherlands were lower than 9% but also higher than the numbers you use.

And if America uses the U6 to gauge its unemployment rate, what system does Europe use and how is it so different from the U6?

We don't count those who are no longer drawing benefits, but don't necessarily have a job

And we don't count those who are underemployed

Or work a couple of part time jobs

Or work at temp jobs

Or have to depend on tips because they work in eateries where managers don't even pay the minimum wage

And you don't necessarily get any benefits from the last four.

Beck reminds me much more of Malcolm McDowell's accomplice, the one named "Dim" .

It boggles the mind to believe people lap up every word from Glenn Beck.

I would not be surprised to learn Glenn Beck, Ann Coulter or Rush Limbaugh don't believe a word they say. They say what the idiocracy wants.

I never listen to them, but I'll take your word as truth.

People (most Americans) want to be entertained; they aren't interested in news. It seems, anyway.

Will Bunch: The Real Reason the Wealthy and the Republicans Want ACORN to Fail. They Empower the Poor. 9/26

This reminds me of the parable of class warfare wherein the rich guy is riding the limo, the working class is chauffering him and the poor man is in an alley and just found a loaf of bread.

There is a dilemna when the rich man tells the chauffer to stop at the alley, while the rich man goes to take the loaf of bread. The task is difficult, so the rich man calls to his chauffer to help take the bread that the poor man was going to feed his family with.

The ultimate dilemna is the choice the chauffer is stuck with: be as cruel and inhumane as his employer or as hungry as the man in the alley.

NOT CHANGE we can believe in: Senate Panel Rejects Bid to Add Drug Discount - http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/25/health/poli...
President Obama scored a big victory on Thursday as the Senate Finance Committee rejected a proposal to require pharmaceutical companies to give bigger discounts to Medicare on drugs dispensed to older Americans with low incomes. The victory came at the expense of senators in Mr. Obama’s own party who had championed the proposal.
The vote, in effect, upheld a deal reached in June by the White House and the drug industry, which saw the agreement as a possible way to avoid more onerous requirements that might be imposed by Congress...Three Democratic senators — Max Baucus of Montana, Thomas R. Carper of Delaware and Robert Menendez of New Jersey — joined all the Republicans on the panel in defeating the amendment by a vote of 13 to 10.

Well this kills my last Photoshop comment here lol. Excellent job.

Just catching up with the news. I often post here about the propoganda where the US media and politicians assume Iran is building a nuclear bomb even though there is no evidence they are building anything but nuclear power. The announcement by Obama of the secret Iranian nuclear facility is the first time I've heard evidence that actually sounds credible that Iran is trying to build nuclear weapons, not just nuclear power. I'm still not convinced, haven't heard enough details. But this doesn't sound like "aluminum tubes" to me. Anyone else have an opinion?

barring additional info (hopefully forthcoming soon). And I concur with your opinion.

Will we get "the truth"? Only if verified by "independent" sources...

I read that the Iranians willfully disclosed this facility to the IAEA last Monday and they upfront agreed to allow them to inspect it.

The Iranians probably do have the goal of developing a Nuke because Pakistan, India and Iseal have nukes.

I imagine that the government feels a nuke would be a deterrent to an invasion by a hostile country.

Who knows which country is making them feel so insecure.

I think the story that the white house tells is that they only disclosed the facility after the US announced it or that word leaked out that the US was about to announce.

To be honest I'm not sure exactly how I feel on this. On the one hand as you point out Iran has had more than ample reason to be afraid of the US and Israel in the past. If this was a peaceful facility I could see why they would keep it quiet given that both countries all but stated at various points they were considering bombing Iran's nuclear facilities and Israel has launched un-provoked attacks on both Syria and Iraq facilities in the past. I can also see how Iran would want a nuclear weapon. I think its fairly clear the current administration won't invade them but what country wants to have its security depend on how the next US election turns out?

On the other hand, the idea of Iran with nuclear weapons doesn't at all seem like a good thing to me. For one thing the republicans (and many dems) would use it as an excuse for all kinds of more insane spending on missile defense, aircraft carriers, etc. For another, a nuclear weaponized iran does raise the horror of a worst case scenario: a nuclear war in the middle east.

Not bad Drift, getting much better. On that second one, you should use the levels and curves tools to bring the skin tone closer to the photo. The Fox News bubble is really throwing the balance off on the first one.
