Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) wants to scare off Justice Dept lawyers from professionally addressing the Gitmo detainee issue. Spencer Ackerman reports:
In the latest bit of brazen slander from the right, Republican Senators are trying to invent a scandal about Justice Department lawyers who — horror — represented Guantanamo detainees. You know, provided the representation that the Rehnquist and Roberts Supreme Court has repeatedly ruled those detainees are entitled? And which even the military commissions provide for? Instead, there’s this McCarthyite tactic of calling Justice Department lawyers the “Gitmo Nine,” a name that oh-so-cleverly suggests that those lawyers were themselves detained at Guantanamo.
To reiterate: Republicans have no actual desire to seriously address national security issues. If the Democrats find their balls, maybe they can take a shot at closing out this shameful chapter of American history.

This is what it states but I have not seen any reduction in what I pay... In fact my property tax has gone up over 15 percent...and there is no change in my federal or state returns...

I believe it was on BillO's show they were talking about these lawyers and said they volunteered to represent the men pro bono. I don't know for sure, but I doubt they did their work for free. If they did, good for them for putting justice before anything else. If they did receive payment for their professional services I have no problem with that either.

Some states require a certain amount of pro bono work. Those that can do it, do it. Otherwise, it would be mandated. Not too much chance of publicity on these cases, at least not up front. Consider this, though: The absolute best lawyers are the honest ones who care most about winning. Not money or publicity, just winning. True advocates. Bless them.

Covering up for torturers is nearing the lowest rungs. I can understand the desire for more creative argument techniques, but I don't think you can argue on accuracy. I bet there were a lot of NAZI's (1930's German style, not the new ones) who would draw the line short of crushing a kids testicals with one of John Yoo's legal briefs.
There are plenty of examples of coutries that used torture without calling someone a Nazi. There may be some parallels, sure, but the overuse of Nazi and Hitler comparisons should be avoided, because it robs the valid comparisons of their impact.

Please go read about one of the detainees who has been held in GITMO for years. His name is Fayiz Al Kandari. It is an unbelievable story and the man who is defending him, Lt. Col. Barry Wingard, is really doing everything he can but is stuck in the quagmire that is the U.S. Government. The story is very interesting and is worth the few minutes (Actually it will take a bit longer but you will be an expert about this subject when you are done!!!) it takes to read. Maybe you will want to get involved in some small way. It will make yourself feel better and it will be giving the finger to the likes of Chuck Grassley. Please go check it out and follow the links.
