(This segment aired Friday on MSNBC) Andrea Mitchell questions McCain's economic advisor---Douglas Holtz-Eakin, a former Director of the Congressional Budget Office and current chief McCain economic advisor on the personal attack smear ads they are running against Obama which include making William Daley a convict.
Mitchell: Do you feel comfortable with that attack on William Daley?
In fact Bill Daley says he went to a Sen. McCain event recently and got a autographed picture from Senator McCain. What is this implication?
Eakins: Why does the standard doesn't apply to Sen Obama who on a daily basis attacks John McCain's staff as riddled with lobbyists. Ah, if Sen Obama is comfortable with mischaracterizing the relationship with John McCain and the aides that served him so faithfully, why is Sen. Obama not held to the same standard?....All we're asking is that he solve a problem that he has started.
Mitchell: I'm not quite sure of what you're saying because it seems to be that you're saying Sen. Obama has done this therefore it's OK to do that. I'm not even acknowledging what the charge is to Sen Obama, but I still don't understand the sort of guilt by association tactic and whether you as an economist and as a former economic official think that this is the way that he should be going.
Mayor Richard Daley is very upset over the fact that McCain used his brother in the ad.
"You want to get tough in politics, I can get tough in politics as anyone else," Daley said. "When you start throwing mud, mud is going to be thrown at you and it’s going to be sticky.”
"People get desperate in their political life," the mayor said when asked about the ad. "My theory about politics and government: You build yourself up. You don’t have to tear people down."
Daley also warned that McCain has his own vulnerabilities, noting the Arizona senator's involvement in the "Keating Five" influence peddling scandal that involved his ties to banker Charles Keating Jr., a poster boy for the savings and loan meltdown.
"If people start throwing dirt and mud – remember, it comes back and hits you right in the face," the mayor said. "I think, to put my brother Bill there – they want to put me there, fine, they put me there all the time anyway."
<>
Asked if he is suggesting a Keating Five ad, Daley shot back: “It would be a great ad. People lost their life savings. Life savings, their own homes, for a guy named Keating out of Arizona.

the mccain campaign lacks discipline like its principal. eakins is supposed to be an economist yet he forays into the political like tucker bounds. i guess that's why mccain's economic policies is a mess. eakins is so third rate. obama has the best minds working for him.

Diabolus est Deus Inversus
If there is anyone who knows about guilt by association, it would be Mrs. Allen Greenspan.
What I find so shocking are the third rate amateurish performances of McCain's campaign managers and spokespeople, especially when compared to their Democrat campaign counterparts.
So this is what a US political party meltdown looks like. Shameful, desperate, and pathetic in equal proportion. The GOP deserve extinction.
Remember they are talking to the paste eaters of america. people with actual working brains know this clown and Tucker bounds are just spewing anything to get the window lickers to the polls on Nov 4th.
Just sit back and laugh at them, just as 78% of america does.
Gafaw! paste eaters....I'll have to remember that one. lol.
I'm sure most people in the warmer areas of the country don't understand the "window lickers" comment. When its cold out side, windows accumulate condensation, obviously. When that happens on a short school bus the kids usually end up licking the glass. I find that very funny for some reason.
It's just that it's such a visceral image, I guess.
So Greenspan is sending his wife out there to take the heat while he hides in closet from the world he screwed up.
No surprise there.
Hiding in a closet? Greenspan is GAY!?! I had no idea. Does Andrea know?.
This 'Guilt by assocation' has already been played, and most Americans are not buying it. The brain dead 30%s live off this kind of shit. Intelligent people know better. At least, I hope so.
or was he fidgeting around like a schoolboy caught telling tales on someone? I am not a big Obama fan, but given the choice, I would choose Obama over Granpa any day.
Government + the Federal Reserve = organized crime
You know, I keep watching these inteviews and I wish, JUST ONCE, that the interviewer would FORCE the interviewee to ANSWER THE DAMN QUESTION!
Hasn’t it struck any of these "experts" that the key problem is not ‘market confidence’ but ‘confidence in the market’? Any investor, prudent banker and pension fund will continue to withhold or withdraw their funds from the market because the stock exchanges of the world can no longer be trusted to provide investment free of toxic debt.
The people (economic criminals) who got rich off this unregulated ponzi scheme the past 8 years starting with ENRON, of course they know it. They don't care! It's I got mine you bastards ha ha ha! Burn baby Burn! Aunt Millie wants a refund ha ha ha ha! We're gonna take California down! Wait till Bush installs Ken Lay as Secretary of energy! We'z gonna be rich!!!
Google the Enron tapes that all you need to learn about the mentality of these shameless bastards.
McCain, you really need to learn rule number one of Chicago politics: Don't f__k with the Daleys.
Pants on fire wrong! The Chicago Tribune admonishes McCain for being not only wrong, but wrong and malicious and, as a result, endorses Obama.
THIS IS HUGE! It totally blows holes in their Ayers story as well and classifies it as "malicious".
It's all coming apart for McCain and his malicious attack machine. It's working in reverse - big time!!
Fact-Checking the Ayers Allegations: So Wrong, It’s “Pants on Fire” Wrong
What about the educational foundation? What "radicals" are associated with it?
Let’s look at a few, starting with the funder. Annenberg was a lifelong Republican and former ambassador to the United Kingdom under President Richard Nixon. His widow, Leonore, has endorsed McCain. Kurtz might just as plausibly have accused Obama and the foundation of “translating Annenberg’s conservatism into practice.”
Among the other board members who served with Obama were: Stanley Ikenberry, former president of the University of Illinois; Arnold Weber, former president of Northwestern University and assistant secretary of labor in the Nixon administration; Scott Smith, then publisher of the Chicago Tribune; venture capitalist Edward Bottum; John McCarter, president of the Field Museum; Patricia Albjerg Graham, former dean of the Harvard University Graduate School of Journalism, and a host of other mainstream folks.
“The whole idea of it being radical when it was this tie of blue-chip, white-collar, CEOs and civic leaders is just ridiculous,” said the foundation’s former development director, Marianne Philbin.
(The Chicago Tribune, by the way, is a conservative newspaper. It has never endorsed a Democrat for president in its entire history.)
The conclusion?
This attack is false, but it’s more than that – it’s malicious. It unfairly tars not just Obama, but all the other prominent, well-respected Chicagoans who also volunteered their time to the foundation. They came from all walks of life and all political backgrounds, and there’s ample evidence their mission was nothing more than improving ailing public schools in Chicago. Yet in the heat of a political campaign they have been accused of financing radicalism. That’s Pants on Fire wrong.
THE MC CAIN AYERS 'LIE' IS SMOKING THEM!
yes, especially when McCain has his own legitimate connections to radical right wing extremist organizations as well as his Kremlin connections. Then you must factor in his Veep's intimate ties (presently as recently as 08) to the huge anti-US extremist group called the AIP (Alaska Secessionist Party) which has ties to Iran.
Clearly, Palin has crashed through the glass ceiling and is tumbling in a free fall to the bottom. McCain's just right behind her in terms of his own extremist ties.
They've thrown stones while living in glass houses and now their own houses are shattering into smithereens.
It's the karmic effect.
The disparaging comments against Obama have come back to hit the McCain campaign where it hurts. They are getting desperate.
"You want to get tough in politics, I can get tough in politics as anyone else," Daley said. "When you start throwing mud, mud is going to be thrown at you and it’s going to be sticky.”
Readily verifiable fact: McCain has surrounded himself with lobbyists
Guilt By Association: Obama "pals around with a domestic terrorist"

These ads are clearly aimed at the US voter who is not the sharpest cheese on the cracker.
Everyone should know by now that negative ads work on this demographic.
Why can't your media just start out these interviews by challenging the guest to admit that the aim of this kind of campaign tactic is to brainwash the stupid?
OBAMA EXPANDS ON ECONOMIC PLAN, EMPHASIZES J-O-B-S.... There were reports this morning that Obama was scheduled to give a "major" speech on the economy, but there have been plenty of "major" speeches, and it's hard to know when and if an address will include new information.
As it turns out, today's "Rescue Plan for the Middle Class" speech, delivered in Toledo, Ohio, really was a "major" speech.
Video excerpts aren't yet available online, but I'd encourage folks to check out the transcript. It included a healthy dose of both rhetoric and policy specifics.
"Right now, we face an immediate economic emergency that requires urgent action. We can't wait to help workers and families and communities who are struggling right now -- who don't know if their job or their retirement will be there tomorrow; who don't know if next week's paycheck will cover this month's bills. We need to pass an economic rescue plan for the middle-class and we need to do it now. Today I'm proposing a number of steps that we should take immediately to stabilize our financial system, provide relief to families and communities, and help struggling homeowners. It's a plan that begins with one word that's on everyone's mind, and it's spelled J-O-B-S."
It was a rather lengthy policy proposal, but the speech emphasized a new jobs tax credit, eliminating all capital gains taxes on investments in small businesses and start-up companies, fast tracked loan guarantees for the auto industry, infrastructure projects, an extension (and expansion) of unemployment benefits, reforming unfair bankruptcy laws, and a three-month moratorium on foreclosures. Obama also endorsed McCain's proposal on waiving rules that force seniors to withdraw from their 401(k)s even when the market is bad, and took it a step further, making it easier for all Americans to withdraw up to 15% from their IRA or 401(k) through the end of next year without penalty.
The notion that Obama doesn't back up his rhetoric with specifics certainly doesn't apply today.
As for the rhetoric, Obama threaded the needle a bit, striking a tone that was optimistic and pragmatic.
"This country and the dream it represents are being tested in a way that we haven't seen in nearly a century. And future generations will judge ours by how we respond to this test. Will they say that this was a time when America lost its way and its purpose? When we allowed our own petty differences and broken politics to plunge this country into a dark and painful recession?
"Or will they say that this was another one of those moments when America overcame? When we battled back from adversity by recognizing that common stake that we have in each other's success?
"This is one of those moments. I realize you're cynical and fed up with politics. I understand that you're disappointed and even angry with your leaders. You have every right to be. But despite all of this, I ask of you what's been asked of the American people in times of trial and turmoil throughout our history. I ask you to believe -- to believe in yourselves, in each other, and in the future we can build together. Together, we cannot fail. Not now."
It sounded like a deal-closer to me.
What's so sad is that working Americans may never hear that speech because they were at work today. Hopefully he will bring out the outline of it Wed. night during the debate.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
Sounds like the deal closer the rest of americans need to clinch it for Obama. Following the debate on Wednesday, there will no longer even be a contest right up to election day.
Keep us apprised of the video when/if it becomes available. Thanks for your informative post.
Well, you see, Andrea, first you go into a bathroom stall...
Looks like they've asked for it and they will get it. Now people are raising concerns about McCain's intimate connections with Gordon Liddy.

McCain and Palin will have blood on their hands.
That is the bottom line
What's really startling is that if there is any violence following any of their rallies now, the defense of the violator will be that they were "infused with hate language" at the McCain Palin rallies. Just like the host of a party where alcohol is served and someone inebriated has an accident and kills someone or is killed himself, McCain and Palin, individually and collectively (the McCain Campaign) will find themselves party to a lawsuit from now on.
The individual nazi soldiers used that excuse but they were all condemned at Nuerumberg -- Political leaders, Officers and Foot soldiers alike.
The republicans are so found of "personal responsibility" and in this case I agree!
They should go to jail!

Since CNN doesn't make Mitchell disclose who she really is as the spouse to Alan Greenspan, her appearance on the show is often more than a bit biased. However, with Greenspan's name appearing now more frequently as being involved in and perhaps partially responsible for our economic crisis, I believe Andrea appears to be having one of those near-death epiphanies.....and she's hoping for absolution from her sins and Extreme Unction by now beginning to speak truth. Although I fear that this near death (of her career) epiphany comes a day late and a dollar short, it is fascinating to observe how she daily attempts to absolve herself for her career of right wing biast in her reporting.
Sadly, her career's heading into the toilet and once Greenspan's intentional disregard for all of the warnings he received years ago about doing something then to avert precisely what's occurring right now, is going to involve him in possible criminal charges before all is said and done. He will be a target of an intense investigation by Congress no doubt at the very least.
First Andrea works for NBC and MSNBC - not CNN! If tyou think Alan Greenspan will ever be charged for any think criminal, think again!
He did excatly what he was supposed to do - make sure that the folks who run the international financial cabal always get the most, the rest be damned. He may no longer be chairmen of the Federal Reserve, but I believe he still sits on the Board of the BIS - Bank for International
Settlements, based in Switzerland and the Mamma to the World Bank(WB) and the International Monetary FUnd (IMF).
He is still one of the evil folks who controls the world's monetary systems - and his wife should not be "posing as a journalist" on any broadcasting network.
And, what happened to your systen - I've been a registeretd user since just after you strated up this new system - now I have to do Math again?
Actually Andrea has corrected erroneous reports regarding Obama in the past which I thought was admirable - such as her correcting the record when Obama was unfairly criticized for not visiting the military hospital in Germany during his European trip. It really appears to me that she has a pretty good moral compass.
We knew they were in Karl Rove's pocket - now we can see the facts and sent politico.com into obscurity and deservedly.

This is quite interesting. Essentially McCain is saying the same thing - he's a maverick and needs to clean up the corruption of his own Party. Here's a real slimeball, used car dealer from Sarasota who, literally stole the election in 2006 due to 18,000 "undervotes" (yeah right!) who has a diabolical reputation and is reviled by floridians - as he pretends he's not Republican anymore. His commercials are comical to say the least. This mean deserves the boot if there ever was a shyster who does!

cold hard cash is the name; Access is the game! Rick Davis of Davis Manafort has been involved in bribery for some time; in fact, his name is all over the Russian coup of Montenegro for a heap big sum of dinero. Add to that his cash cow for his involvement as a lobbyist for Fannie Mae to the tune of $25,000 a month for years and his recent last check from Freddie before it tanked of $15,000.
This sicko is rolling in the dough - dirt money, that is. Rick Davis needs to be investigated and prosecuted under the laws of this country. He certainly is doing his level best to besmerch and forever tarnish what's left of McCain's reputation.
McCain should have fired Davis long ago. He will soon join Palin as the "scapegoats" when McCain loses this election. Maybe the two of them can plan their next coup - like the Secession of Alaska from the US and the takeover of Georgia in Russia?? He has plenty of experience in those antics from Montenegro.....stolen election there, thanks to him?? Let's dig and find Rick Davis's connection to the RNC and their illegal servers which Kenneth Blackwell set up in 04 where the election results for the state went through their website straight into an RNC server in Chatanooga, Tennessee. Some people will eventually go to jail once we have a legitimate DOJ in this country.

I love the fact that Andrea Greenspan and Nora Odonnell are starting to balk at the Repub tactics.
John McCain gave away government land that eventually sold for $18 million to a political crony for a mere $250,000!
Read about it here:

Spread the word about this corrupt land deal.
McCain claims that his role in Keating was merely to help out a local constituent in dealing with Washington bank regulators. McCain, his current wife, and father-in-law were, in fact, Charles Keating’s business partners in a Phoenix shopping mall, received in excess of one hundred thousand dollars in campaign contributions from Keating, and accompanied Keating on his private jet to his private resort in the Bahamas on multiple occasions, gifts which McCain did not report until they were discovered. Yet, McCain, hand-picked as Barry Goldwater’s successor, got a slap on the wrist from the Senate Ethics Committee when this came out in the Keating-Five inquiry.
A second Senate panel wasn’t so sanguine. The 1992 Kerry Commission report concluded that the Keating affair was far more serious than a mere domestic banking scandal: “the financial dealings of BCCI directors with Charles Keating and several Keating affiliates and front-companies, includ(e) the possibility that BCCI related entities may have laundered funds for Keating to move them outside the United States.” http://www.fas.org/irp/congress/1992_rpt/b… Out of the five Senators accused, only McCain and Glenn ever ran again for office, with McCain the sole survivor. ~~~~leveymg~
Thousands of Ohio jobs are at risk because of a proposed shipping-company deal that would close DHL operations at an airport in Wilmington.
The process that has resulted in DHL’s threat to close its operations at the Wilmington airport demonstrates how corporate interests and lobbyists win out over communities and workers—and Sen. John McCain’s campaign is at the heart of it.
The deal was made possible in 2003, when McCain and high-priced lobbyist Rick Davis, McCain’s current campaign manager, both pushed to allow the German company Deutsche Post to take over DHL and get around antitrust laws. Davis’ lobbying firm, Davis Manafort, was hired to help both companies deal with Congress, where objections over DHL’s foreign ownership arose. Davis and a partner earned their firm $185,000 for the DHL-Airborne Express work that year, and $405,000 more from Deutsche Post for work on other issues in 2004 and 2005, Senate records show.
Ohioan Joe Rugola says that McCain and Davis, two longtime Washington insiders, acted on behalf of corporate interests, not Ohio workers.
Those jobs are on the chopping block because Sen. McCain and his campaign were involved in a deal that resulted in control of those positions being shifted to a foreign corporation, and there’s no getting around that.
The U.S. House of Representatives will hold hearings about the proposed restructuring of DHL’s air transportation plans. U.S. Rep. Betty Sutton, an Ohio Democrat who sits on the House Judiciary Committee, says the House will work to make sure antitrust laws are upheld and jobs are protected.
This merger brings up major concerns for our local economy and working families. Not only does it have the potential to impact an estimated 8,000 jobs from the Wilmington, Ohio, area, but the loss of competition may have serious implications for Ohio consumers.
This is an outrage! I demand John McCain and his running mate make a PUBLIC APOLOGY for sowing the seeds racism and fear. The American people deserve a PUBLIC APOLOGY!!!
Um, McCain's campaign is full of lobbyists, some with very questionable ties and financial arrangements, most notably Rick Davis, Mccain's campaign manager. There's a difference between actual associations and the pretend kind. Also, that line about the McCain campaign being eager to debate issues is one of the funniest I've heard. Maybe McCain can start by responding to issues at the debates. Or they can listen to an Obama speech and actually respond to it - without misrepresentation. McCain's always been running mostly on persona, and know that more people realize he's full of crap, his numbers are sinking.
Confusion seems to be traveling through the John McCain camp like the worse flu in history. Everyone who works for McCain has it, and it is killing the McCain's chances of becoming president.
The symptoms are excessive lying followed by memory deficits the lying took place. These lies are resistant to any form of followup, clarifications or ownership the statement was even made.
The origin of this contagion seems to be negative poll numbers. Known as "Poll-Flu," it is hard to treat. Some treatment regiments consist of reading only conservative polls like Rasmussen and Zogby.
Electing Barack Obama will lead to funding to treat this nasty disease, so don't forget to vote.
Joseph
About Obama not 'coming clean' about his (non)relationship with Ayres? Obama didn't know him from Adam during that school reform meeting. And again, Obama was 8 freaking years old when Ayres was a member of that underground movement. Obama has quite clearly explained this 'non'relationship with Ayres.
McCains Tour De Camp is full of lobbyists. All one has to do is a role call and there they are. McCains' election campaign is full of lies, distortions and half assed truths. But the way they keep harping about Ayres, and not saying word one about anything else shows just how disparate they are getting.
