Baseball Playoffs Begin Today!
By John Amato Wednesday Oct 07, 2009 5:00amI can't believe it's time for the baseball playoffs already. If you missed it yesterday, Detroit and Minnesota played an awesome one-game playoff that resulted in a 12-inning win for the Twins, who made one of the great comebacks in MLB history. And Joe Mauer is the MVP for sure. Soon to be the named the greatest catcher of all time.
The teams are:
The Rockies at the Phillies
The Twins at the Yankees
The Cardinals at the Dodgers
The Red Sox at the Angels.
This is a very wide open field. You know who I'm rooting for, now who's going to win the first round?

"Baseball is dead." Thus spoke Zarathustra.
Used to love baseball and football in the 80's and into the nineties. Stopped watching because of the commercials and when endorsements, greed and cash became more important than the games or loyalty.

Being a Yankee fan, I have to sit through the corporate dronings of Michael Kay, who has nothing of value to say, John Flahherty (can't figure why he is an announcer for the Yankees) and Al Leiter. While Ken Singleton is fine, the Yankee announcers make watching a game unbearable. Maybe that is why I don't watch many full games in their entirety anymore. Mets fans have one thing going for them: Keith Hernandez. A joy to listen to him broadcast a baseball game. I guess that is one of the ironies of life, or maybe it isn't. Maybe, the Yankees have their head up their asses with the proof of that being their alliance with Faux Noise.
Here here plus my Jays didn't make it. As long as the Yanks or red sox don't win.
I second that!
Dodgers.
Pujols. Cards. Nuff Said.
Dodgers all the way!!!
All the way home :) Can't forget Holiday there Carpenter!!!
The Giants couldn't last the season, horrible finish.
Yep, I remember how around the all-star break there was a conventional wisdom that the Giants would come up and bite the Dodgers in the butt by the end. But in the end the only thing Dodgers had to fear was themselves.
For me it's gotta be my Dayyers crushing da Yanks in the series in a way that will relegate the 77-78 Series (Reggie Jackson era) to the footnote of history.
We spell it Doyers, but, you have to be from Los Angeles to get it!
I'm heartbroken that the Giants couldn't get their act together at the end (and that the Front Office never got the real bats we needed). There is no team left that I really care about (and many teams I outright hate, like the Dodgers, Angels, Yanks, Sox, Rox). That just leaves St. Louis and the Twins. Considering I actually used to live in St. Paul (briefly), I think I'll be pulling for Mauer and his crew.
It WAS a geat game last night. I'm a FRed Sox fan, but I'll definitely root for the Twins against the Yankees.
They can take the Yanks out in the first round. They've had some gritty games to get them prepped for this.
The only thing in the Twins favor is that they have been playing meaningful games, and while wildcards have been doing very well in baseball playoffs. The Yankees were (and probably still are) the best team in baseball this year. But, best of luck thinking that the Twins, the Cards or the Dodgers have a chance this year.
When you pay that much for your team, they better be the best!
The Yankees: The prime reason a salary cap is needed in baseball.
There is a salary cap in baseball and a luxury tax.
I'm not a baseball person but I sure can appreciate the fun of pulling for your team and all the tears and cheers that go with that. Have a great time during the playoffs and I'll just wait for the Super Bowl.
The twins may have been on a roll, but I gotta think the Yanks are prohibitive favorites this year. That's not a guarantee, it's just my opinion from watching them play superlative ball this season. I realize however, that can all fall apart in a short series.
Professional sports? How much time and energy is wasted on that crap? It's a cut above organized religion...barely.
Let's cheer the home team while we circle the drain.
Baseball meets the Conservative Bible Project!
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was, 'Play Ball!'
Instead of creating the world in seven days, the Commissioner did it in nine innings ...
The inherent 'free market' goodness of the Bible shall be reflected in endorsements ...
Instead of seven seals in Revelation, there are three strikes ...
Instead of silence for an hour, there is the seventh-inning stretch ...
and did at once the Commissioner from on high declare from this day forward one strike and no other strike will thus be had..........and all praised the Commissioner who in his wisdom declared that there would be no second chances.
And here I thought the seven seals played bulb horns for herrings.
no, I don't, but I don't judge people who do, or people with fat bellies.
I guess you're solo25 because you're alone and 25. How sad.
but last night's game was GREAT.
Having lived most of my life in OC, got to root for the Halos, I guess. Versus Dodgers. But I doubt that will occur.
Will root for ANYONE but the Yankees (just like anyone but the Cowboys.)
We try to ignore the Phillies until they're in the finals. That way, our cardiac death rate is much lower.
I hope he didn't start drinking again after the Tigers loss...
The slide went on long enough that I was happy the Tigs had one last shot at the playoffs.
To summarize the Tigers' season: Runners left on base.
Does Detroit have a baseball team?
;•)
now here's a sports town that'll make you weep every gd time.
Zzzzzzzzzzz...
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
zzzzzzzzz SNORT zzzzzzzzzzzz
I remember on lazy Sunday afternoons during the summers in the 60's my dad would have the Cleveland Indians game on with the blinds closed and I'd lay down and the low noise of the crowd and the droning voice of the announcer calling the game KNOCKED ME OUT. Some of the best afternoon naps of my life!
well, I'm out.
Let's go Cardinals! We're going to get the MVP & Cy Young to go along with Carp's Comeback Award!
Meh.
I can't muster a flying flip about Baseball.
Maybe they should strike again? Cancel the playoffs or better yet the world series? (oh wait - that is when I quit caring anything about baseball)
Meh M-E-H MEH!
FTW.
but the Pirates are poised to take it all* in 2010!
*All of a .500 record
Well that certainly isn't cricket.
wife is a Dodger fan and I hate the Yanks. Would love to see the Twins beat the best team money can buy, but a Dodgers - Yankees WS would be pretty sweet with Torre sticking it to his former employer. The Tigers...OMG...7 up with 12 to go???
They were 7 up with about a month to go, looking at a lot of road games.
However, they were the first team to ever blow a 3 game lead with 4 to go. They lost to the Twins last Thursday, then to the White Sox on Friday and Saturday, before getting the win on Sunday and forcing the playoff.
The best thing about the play-offs is that you get to see one of the very best players in the history of the game--Albert Pujols--play the game that he's taken to a whole new level...
Dodgers/Angels 'freeway Series" would be good, too, cuz at least there wouldn't be any games cancelled for snow...

on the coin operated bed vibrating machines.
burned out?
Twins comeback? Were you out drinking with Miguel Cabrera or something? The Tigers gave that title away by playing like crap since, well, since the whole summer. Their hitting sucks, bad.
The odds of them beating the Yankees are very, very low. I'm now rooting for the Angels because of Rick Adenhart.
The Twins finished the season 17-4. I think most people would think that qualifies as a great finish. You are right though that Detroit shot themselves in the foot. Nobody has blown a 3 game lead with 4 to play UNTIL now
The 'Fightin's' have been playing well this year and have a balanced team - and big hitters. It'll be an Amtrak Series - NYY and Philly.
GO DOYERS!
I'm an eternally jealous Cub fan(since 1974 when I was five). Every year the Yankees get the top two or three available players and they don't win shit.
My parents, native Chicagoans (as am I) have been disappointed Cubs fans since the '40s...
There's always next year (famous Cubs fan comeback)
Sometimes I pity Cubs fans.
Which is always somewhere in the back of each Cubs fan's mind.
They're often saying that in April.
1923, 1927, 1928, 1932, 1936, 1937, 1938, 1939, 1941, 1943,
1947, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1956, 1958, 1961, 1962,
1977, 1978, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000
With the money the Yankees spend on players every year, the last eight seasons can only be classified as a major disappointment.
Joe Mauer soon to be a first round playoff losing catcher to the Yankees. Yankees 4-0
Since Mauer is due to be a free agent soon, how much are the Yanks going to pay for him? 100 million, 200 million?
N/T
Rockies, Twins, Cards, Sox. Now deride me for my overly optimistic projections and for enjoying a game almost as old as the Catholic Church.
The round of 16 of the FIFA U-20 concludes today
Another round of qualifiers on 10/10/09 for WC 2010 SA
Crucial games: USA vs Honduras - Germany vs Russia
Another round on 10/14:
Crucial here: USA vs Costa Rica
Will the neocons cheer for the other side here too?
In baseball - they should stop calling it the World Series', it is not.
It is the USA Series, or North American Series at best
I think these days baseball has more right to use the 'World" title. If you look at the make-up of the players, you'll see a more international look than ever. I know "football" is the sport of the future (for the last 40 years), but for now if you would indulge us our local sport, we would appreciate it.
I find it difficult to indulge in a sport that consists mainly of standing around, chewing tobacco or gum, spitting all over the place and rearranging your privates. That goes for gridiron football too.
Btw, Why do some college football teams have 'thousands' of players on their team?
No, the Neocons will not cheer for a Hispanic team.
... will they boo the team when/if they score?
And in other "who cares" news, soccer playoffs are going on.....
So it should read Honduras vs. USA. ;-) Hope to get a draw there to solidify the berth in South Africa next year. Should get at least a point in the home game against the Ticos.
Twins to upset Yanks
Red Sox over Angels
Rockies over Phillies
Dodgers over Cards .
Red sox over Twins
Dodgers over Rockies
Red sox over Dodgers in 7
Red Sox Rule
F@#$ the F@#$ing Yankees!
The Twins-Tigers game was not televised here yesterday. Booo!
I'm rooting for the Twins and Rockies.
I will root for whatever team opposes the Dodgers.
The Yankees to win the Batting Practice League so they can get whupped by the Cardinals who play real baseball?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xBxZGQ1dJk
In the land of the brave, the home of the free, and the graveyard of the National League...
Yankees all the way. We can beat anyone from the NL.
Baseball season ended last night. When Rodney came in to pitch another inning, I knew it was over.
Now I need to go find out in which establishment AndyK is drowning his sorrows.
... luckily we just bought a great super comfy couch, so I am prepared in case things get "interesting" this season and I have to spend extended periods of time banished from our bed at night.
I'm a Red Sox fan, but I'm a realist:
Yankees over Twins
Red Sox over Angels
Phillies over Rockies
Cardinals over Dodgers
Cardinals beat Yankees in the World Series in 7. Pujols MVP.
I noticed the season goes well into November this year ! That's just not right. Can they play every day in the playoffs instead of having every other day off ???
to see how the fields are mowed!
:P
good kitty
Phillieeesss Fever !!!!!
Tweety should be wearing his colors today.
We're repeating baby !!!
I predict a Phils vs Yankees series with our boys dominating in that joke of a ball park. Not that ours is much better mind you, I've always favored good pitching and small ball over the power-hitting dominated game its become, but I bet our boys are SALIVATING over that left field wall in NYC.
right field?
Left field at New Yankee Stadium is still pretty deep.
Right field at the park is the same depth at the foul pole and the power alley, but between the two it's shallower than the old park: At the old park the wall arched into the seating about 12 feet, but at the new park the wall is a straight line between the pole and the alley.
with all that left-handed power, I would think that the Phillies are salivating over the right field wall (yes, I know that Howard hits a lot opposite HRs)
Come on, Phillies. You gotta do it!
We do have a lot of lefty hitters though.
Has anyone broken Raul Ibanez's record for longest home run in the new Yankee stadium ? Maybe Ryan Howard will do it this fall.
The wind is blowing out to left field in Citizens Bank Park today.
The worst will be the Fox coverage though. The worst baseball coverage EVER ! Non-stop chattering-about-nothing announcers and MTV-style camera work. Be ready for lots of close ups of intense expressions. F*** all that just show me the game and man! Do I miss Harry Kalas.
You are right on w/ the critique of Faux Sports -- they do a truly horrible job covering the game. Between the annoying sound effects, pathetic commentary and camera close ups mixed with celebrity worship drives me nuts!
The good news is that all of these divison series games will be on tbs.
Rockies are the team of Destiny for this year! They beat the Phillies in 4, sweep the Cardinals and then get revenge for '07 by beating the Red Sox in 6.
Go Rox! :-)
MVP vs MVP, Twins Cards!
But I can't say the same about the Twins, even though they did beat the Tigers. Yes, the Twins can hit the cover off of the ball, but their starting pitching isn't all that great. And as well as they played down the stretch, the Twins won't be facing the Indians, White Sox and Royals in the playoffs as they did in the last month of the season.
Okay, so I didn't pick who I actually think WILL make it, just the match up I want to see. If I were betting, I'd say freeway series, Dodgers Halos. They say football is a game of inches, but baseball is about fractions of an inch, and those are places where tiny things come into play.
The Yankees except Jeter play bad fundamentals and the BoSox are just beat up, the Phils bullpen is poison, and the Rockies are the Rockies. So coming out of the opening round, Twins-Halos, and Dodgers-Rockies, with Dodgers Halos in the series.
I WANT something else, but that's my real guess.
Yankees and Red Sox in the ALCS, with the Yanks winning.
Cardinals and Phillies in the NLCS, Cards on top.
Cards over Yankees in 7.
I'm reading reports that the Phillies' relief pitching isn't up to par. The Cards have some heavy hitters. It'll be Yanks vs Cards in the Series.
Yeah it isn't at all like the old days. check out the 1st game ever.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEK_FtMD2QQ&fe...
I did not see the end of the game, so I have to believe Mauer won it for them, thus making him the MVP?
IIRC, Cassillas got the game-winning RBI.
I don't think people are talking about last night's MVP, but this year's AL MVP. That should be Mauer, hands down.
6-4, 1-0, 13-5, and, finally, 11-1, a nail biter for sure...
Go Sox..
There is an empty feeling on the South Side, but the Twins should be thanking Ozzie Guillen for going nut-job crazy on TV a couple of weeks ago. If the Sox weren't terrified of Ozzie, I don't know if they would have won their first series against the Tigers in (I don't know how long) this weekend.
I love baseball. But, as Bud Selig has decided the first round and NLCS should only be available on cable, I figure I'm being invited not to care about the playoffs.
Dodgers V Angels would be great for tourism. I don’t care who wins!
This is for John!

Sports recap from the Great Lakes State:
Michigan, the most storied college football team in history, had their worse season ever. Senile Ford's Lion's finally fulfill their destiny, becoming the first 0-16 team in NFL history - validating his reasoning for keeping Matt Millen in charge for eight years with a whopping 26% winning percentage.
Then the Red Wings of all teams, pulled the biggest choke-ass performance in the Stanley Cup Finals in 40 years; only to be outdone by the Tigers who yesterday, completed the biggest choke in baseball since 1901! That's 1901!
If it wasn't for the auto industry and our economy, this would have been a pretty crappy year for us Michigander's. Oh wait, it was a crappy year..........
(bent over, softly, then louder)
yanks were a juggernaut (truth be told) SOX started strong but are half/young and...old -- Anaheim Lady you drive me crazy No one ever called mike scioscia lazy (and got away with it)
