Conservatives need to stop writing that "racism" is dead...
By John Amato Monday Nov 17, 2008 6:45am...because Barack Obama, an African American won the presidency. He did have to overcome the fact that he is black, but how does that erase all cases of racism in America as we move forward? We've made progress for sure, but how does Obama being elected wipe away the sins of the many from the past and in the future?
White guilt? Done; over; history
There go my fellow conservatives, glumly shuffling along, depressed by the election aftermath. Not me. I'm virtually euphoric. Don't get me wrong. I'm not thrilled with America's flirtation with neosocialism. But there's a massive silver lining in the magical clouds that lofted Barack Obama to the presidency. For today, without a shred of intellectually legitimate opposition, I can loudly proclaim to America:
The Era of White Guilt is over.
This seemingly impossible event occurred because the vast majority of white Americans didn't give a fluff about skin color and enthusiastically pulled the voting lever for a black man. Not just any black man. A very liberal black man who spent his early career race-hustling banks, praying in a racist church for 20 years, and actively working with America-hating domestic terrorists. Yet white Americans made Barack Obama their leader. Therefore, as of Nov. 4, 2008, white guilt is dead.
So today, I'm feeling a little "uppity," if you will. For more than a century, the millstone of white guilt hung around our necks, retribution for slave-owning predecessors. In the 1960s, American liberals began yanking that millstone while sticking a fork in the eye of black Americans, exacerbating the racial divide to extort a socialist solution to the country's problems. But if a black man can become president, exactly what significant barrier is left? The election of Barack Obama destroys the validation of liberal white guilt. The dragon is hereby slain.
{}
That's the sound of my foot kicking the door shut on the era of white guilt. The rites have been muttered, the carcass lowered, dirt shoveled, and tombstone erected. Dead and buried.
Writers like Tom Adkins are seriously deluded. I guess he has to try and find something he can be proud of after eight years of Conservative destruction, but using Obama's achievement to try and wipe away racism in America is really troubling. May I just say this: Have you no decency, sir?

Was it lynched?
He's a moron, and proud!
What was all of that "He's a A-rab" and "He's a terrist" and the plans of white pinheads for killing eighty-eight blacks!?
According to poles less thatn 50% of whites voted for Obama. According to Secret Service reports he has an elevated number of death threats. The narrowminded bigot is who wrote this piece has his head in the sand.
As a white woman, Would I vote for a president based on the color of his skin? That is rediculous, I voted for Barrack Obama because of the content of his policies, his brilliant ideas, his high moral charactor, the way he cares about his country, the fact that he comes from a Military family like mine (My grandfather served in the Navy - based out of Hawaii, my dad was a marine).I adore the amazing way he treats his wife and children with respect and dignity. His mind is multi faceted and able to see all sides in any situation. In the debates he showed an amazing understanding and was well versed in Foreign policy and brought ideas to the table that I had never heard before, thus showing a broad understanding of situations around the globe. He inspires us all to be better people.......He will be a great leader. The fact that he is an afrian american makes his story even more amazing. I do not believe the polls - if it is true that less than 50% white voted for him, I guess I am a minority..........
ps. the Republicans (neo-cons AKA Neo-Conservatives) will use these next four years to try and intimidate and tear him down, make him look bad through the press. They do not want change..it is the enemy to them because they are loosing power and lots of $$$.
Said the other day, that since Obama's been elected, he should be able to drop the "N" bomb whenever he wants...
Not sure if he's kidding or not...but he pretty much says every offensive thing he can think of anyway...to anyone...it don't matter who, what, when or where...
Unless he's bee miraculously cured of some heretofore unknown speech impediment, what exactly has been holding him back, up until now!?! I mean, certainly plenty of other people haven't had a problem "dropping" it so far.
But more importantly, why is it so important to him?
You know what, never mind. Tell your brother that, yes, he can now drop the "N" bomb any time he wants, and to his heart's content... -as long as he obtains permission, in writing, from any President Of The United States Of America, past, present, or future, and is able to produce it on demand when doing so.
Then kick him in the nuts. You don't have to be black to do that.
You don't have to be black to wanna kick him in the nuts.
But you MIGHT have to stand in line...
At least your bro voted in a sensible manner.
One of my three bros voted for McBush.
The bro who's a baptist minister (we attend antiwar rallies together) voted for McKinney.
Yeah...my bro is what some may refer to as a Philistine Troglodyte...
He hates anything that he doesn't fit his definition of cool, and his attitude towards women and minorities is just..just...circa 1950's Southern USA.
But he votes Democrat...he is a walking contradiction.
No...my brother has been miraculously spared of having any social conscience...he's not quite a sociopath by definition...
He doesn't hold back really...
He's the most bigoted, sexist, anti-immigrant, anti-Semitic, liberal minded person I have the "pleasure" of knowing.
Sometimes I swear he's republican! He hates what republicans stand for, but he's more like them than he knows.
And if he weren't related to me...I damn sure wouldn't have a thing to do with him.
I told him, that sure, you can say that word as often as you like, just not around me and my friends, and only around African-Americans.
I bet that would work out swell!
to go ahead and drop the N bomb in Chicago, Detroit, Baltimore, Compton, or New York. I'm sure they'll appreciate the gesture.
i don't think adkins is trying to "wipe away racism in America" with this piece...
in fact, it seems he is excusing more of it...
more of the 'blacks have no excuse now' meme ...
katy:
That is exactly what he is doing. He is giving himself, and everyone around him permission to be as openly racist as he wants, since it cannot possibly have any ill effects on society around him. After all, a black man is the president, so racism was not an impediment to him.
This is truly sick thinking, animated mostly by his claim that the era of white guilt is over. Guilt? Only white racists should feel a sense of guilt about how they treat minorities. Modern activists, of whatever race or ethnicity, who continue the fight against racism do so not out of guilt, but out of decency, something people like Adkins would never understand.
This very article is its own disproof.
White people voting for a once in a lifetime candidate who happens to be black, over an unhealthy, ill tempered old man whose party has fucked this Country up for eight years. Not to mention that the old man's selection for his VP may well had been the worse, least qualified candidate in U.S. history.
A no-brainer deserving zero credit in regards to race relations.
While (IMHO) this was a DEFINITE, POSITIVE step in the right direction.
There's still PLENYT o' work to be done before racism dies.
...direction. Thank goodness young white people and progressives don't think like most of their parents. It's just that I never felt that race relations improved when I proudly voted for Clinton, Gore or Kerry over that * Jackson or * Sharpton....I shouldn't even mention that bag of sh*t Keys.
* Sitemonitor sez: keep the adjectives civil....
I've never felt more proud of my fellow Americans...it looks as if this country has taken the first serious step down the long road to healing the festering wound that is racism, that has been holding this country back for decades!
I have this strange new feeling...it's hope...and after 8 years of not knowing that feeling...it's gonna take some getting used to.
I gotta see those damned Obama coin thingys on this site too...they're already on my teevee!
Racists just don't have to feel guilty about it anymore.
That means racism is over!
Whew! Now I can go back to not having him over for dinner! *snark*
because Obama was elected. He was elected DESPITE the republican party. If anything, they should be a little more introspective. The Democratic party is a party of diversity and inclusion. The Republican party is a party with serious issues regarding race. Just look at the crowds at the Republican Convention. It's hard to find someone who isn't white. So Republicans, please just stop your phony rejoicing that racism is over because you did not elect Obama.
My dentist told me I had an inclusion once,
Boy was it painful.
need to hang their heads in shame for the past thirty years of ruining our whole bleeding and bruised country.
That is not likely to happen either.
They're doing the same thing that they did after the Vietnam debacle and the Watergate shitstorm...
..."We need to stop dwelling on the past and look to the future!"
Wellll... that's a pretty goddamm convenient thing to do when your guilty and oughtta be convicted and imprisoned until you are turned over to the Hague.
I suggest that one of the major reasons that we got into this giant mess in the first place was that we let the masterminds of Watergate and Iran Contra etc get away with their crimes.
That served to embolden the white collar criminal element to bigger and "better" crimes than ever before.
We need to put these doughy white guys on trial and sentence them as though they are blacks who burglarised a gas station or youth who smoked marijuana, you know; criminals.
Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to be the Democratic Party.
After Watergate the Republicans vowed that no-one would go through that again which is why olly north got off on a technicality with Iran Contra and no-one has faced charges with Iraq, even the quashing of the libby conviction. It would be good to see those who authorised torture face war crimes trials but look to the repugs doing their level best to block anything like that happening.
as possible that screwed our country over for the almighty dollar, end up at a war-crimes trial at the Hague.
Bush and Cheney have purchased hundreds of thousands of acres in Paraguay...which has no extradition treaty with the US...so those two will walk away scot free
They really bought Paraguay land?
Not that I'd be surprised, just disgusted.
But my dad..who is barely literate on computers, showed me a site that goes into detail about it...
Just type in Paraguay, and George Bush in your search bar...
Does that mean dick and bush are a pair o' gays?
Mr Gannon did make frequent visits there....I'm not sayin...I'm just SAYIN...
And this was the first link.

Tom Adkins’ comment, “A very liberal black man who spent his early career race-hustling banks, praying in a racist church for 20 years, and actively working with America-hating domestic terrorists”, is in it self racist. I’m sure he thinks telling someone that for a fat man you don’t sweat much is a compliment
......... to Obama being black?
I thought the new conservative meme was that was wrong to call him that because of his mother!! Obama can't be every boogeyman under the repug lexicon, maybe if they hadralised that they may have done better in the elections.
legitimate opposition...."
This fool wouldn't know an intellect if it hit him on the head with a two by four.
Racism is not determined by how well an individual does. Its determined by how well the group is treated. Translation: Black people fearing police is the litmus test. As long as your average black person, fairly or not has reason to not trust the law, racism is serious problem.
And I am considerably non-black.
There are many people with many reasons to not trust the police, but my point is still valid. As long as your average black citizen fears or doesn't trust the police that is the litmus test for determining racism. Its not about how well one black person does, its about equal treatment before the law.
with you FH. But there's more to it than just that. Hatred of "other" is becoming institutionalized and legitimized by the corporate MSM and xianists. We all have much to fear.
He validated the haters.
And as far as McCain is concerned, he couldn't validate a parking stub.
Remember the primary? Nobody "liked" McCain. But plenty of people hated everybody else. So they got the candidate that was hated the least... but really, he never had a chance.
But not for bigotry, the Presidential race wouldn't had been that close.
Uh sorry Mr. Pompous Asshat, but it sounds distinctly like you're trying to clear your own personal conscience of any lingering roadblocks of decency that stand in the way of a new wave of "Blacks ur lazy 'n stoopid 'n ur tuh blame fer ther' own po'ness" attacks.
You would just be tickled pink if institutional racism could no longer be offered as an "intellectually legitimate" retort to your self-serving hate speech, wouldn't you? Well, survey says - bzzzzt!
You lowlifes tried fanning every racist ember that exists in this nation's consciousness to try to keep Barack Obama from being elected, and the reason it failed is not because the nation is no longer racist.
The reasons are many. I can think of one that alone refutes your argument. Do you think that if Barack Obama still had Barack Obama's qualifications but looked more like Willie Horton that he still would have been elected? Yeah, enjoy your millstone a while longer...
In all the states that voted for McCain Affirmative Action measures should be doubled.
That would be the war criminals who have worked for many years to bring about the disasters we now have, I guess. It would definitely be a good idea to bring them before a court and have them put away where they can't return, another time, to bring this country down again.
The only thing the present can do is aid the future. The present cannot change the past. The past can only be a lesson for the future if it is used wisely.
Ridiculous things I just learned from Tom Adkins:
1. Racism is dead (except for this article)
2. White guilt is finished (although Tom's white guilt was more like white fear)
3. 1960's liberals are responsible for the racial divide that existed before this recent election. (acknowleding an issue = creating and prolonging an issue)
4. A black church = a racist church
5. Obama is a very liberal man (the 35th most liberal person in the Senate)
6. Tom can now feel better about his own racism since a black man can overcome people like Tom.
I'm sorry. I'm enraged. The stupidity of right wingers still shocks me profoundly. They don't make judgments according to facts, they think what they want and then look for facts that support them and ignore all others.
But let's look at only one quote.
"This seemingly impossible event occurred because the vast majority of white Americans didn't give a fluff about skin color and enthusiastically pulled the voting lever for a black man."
What?? In fact, according to exit polls, 43% of white voters voted for Obama. Can anyone please define vast majority for me? For him? For US???
"I'm the white half of a sham biracial lesbian marriage."
That was until it was taken away.
For anyone curious about race in this election... I'm a white man and I voted for Obama because he's black. I'm sick of the white folks screwing this country up the last 8+ years.
I voted for Obama because I actually believe he is gonna be the greatest president we've ever had.
Oh and...for what it's worth...I'm white too.
If racism was dead, we wouldn't be jumping up and down and feeling all warm and fuzzy about Barak Obama being ELECTED, and we'd let the guy get in office, do something RIGHT, or do something WRONG, and react accordingly, JUST THE SAME AS WE WOULD ANY OTHER POLITICIAN!!
I mean, sure, rah rah! Hooray for our side! We took back the office of the Presidency, and for the first time in 8 years the office will be held by the actual CHOICE OF THE PEOPLE. Great.
But being happy that we have a minority president is no better than being happy that we don't.
The end of racism is not indicated by some arbitrary degree of racial diversity. It's indicated by the fact that the question of race no longer even comes up.
I would expect to see that now that racism is over.
And all the skinhead websites? Are they gone too?
That would be the biggest disbanding since the Bay City Rollers.
Aaaah yes...the 70's cheese punk band....memoriiiiiies!
...and the Bay City Rollers were definitely NOT punk. Please learn your musical taxonomy. ;-)
They did suck though.

We have reason to believe that the racists are in their last throes.
I love hearing from all those conservative commentators who like to proclaim that they are not racists so it's ok for them to say racist things.
One thing that this election has taught us is that racism is still very much alive in this country and just saying it isn't doesn't make it so.
The construct of white American society is such that most don't even KNOW what racism is! When someone with obvious race "issues" says that they are not a racist, they honestly don't think they are.
The majority of white Americans are completely oblivious to the privileges that the color of their skin affords them, so how can they possibly see the disparity in the experience and treatment of minorities!?!
I think a lot of the problem lies with perception. There a way too many "self-made" people who don't realize the help they get,
And whether someone is looking at you funny because both they could be or one could be too sensitive.
And as for the police, since they have a fair number of black cops, can a black cop be guilty of racial profiling?
I would say yes if they see themself as a cop before all else. But that's the fly in the ointment.
Consider this:
"It is always the tendency of the individual to adjust to the level of his environment."
I don't know who you're quoting but in Political Sociology they refer to the fishbowl syndrome. Cops develop and us against them mentality, us the good guys, them the bad guys. The feel like they're under constant watching, hence the fish bowl analogy. They use the same analogy for the White House. It's like everything you do is under public display. This causes presdential administrations to have the tendency to withdraw, and appear secretive and imperial.
There is a big difference between some sociological bullshit written in a book and the reality of racial confrontations of culturally ill-trained policemen out of their element.
You simply don't know what you're talking about.
I come from a family of police officers and firemen, but that would be anecdotal evidence.
Of course there's always an argument for empiricism, but since the comment I was referring to was in quotes, it appeared to come from a book, so I was referring back to the texts I had to study.
Here in Chicago "Us against them" has a far different meaning. My father, who was a cop in the 60's and 70's, taught us the do's and don't's when approached by police because he saw first hand what his co-workers did to minorities. Policemen have an indisputable racist history using their guns and badges exacting revenge on us uppity, bourgeois n****rs.
I would agree since I'm from Texas.
But wouldn't you say that officers of various races tend to support each other if they think they got each other's back? So that racial attitudes get submerged into a professional attitude, often to the detriment of the public, until something like lack of promotions disrupt it?
I was in the Air Force, and it didn't seem to matter what race or gender an officer was, we had to respond the same. Our interior self-talk may've been rude, but our behavior was regulated.
Create any hypothetical equation you wish Ysb. Historical facts prove that white policemen overwhelmingly use their authority to perpetrate hate crimes.
All white policemen?
Sounds kind of prejudiced to me.
I never said "All white policemen". Look, for a long time police departments all over the country were virtually all white...that can't be denied. Statistically speaking(especially adding racism with a changing black attitude towards bigotry in the 50's and 60's) there were more opportunities for racist white policemen to commit hate crimes. Just because your experiences with cops are very different than mine doesn't make me wrong.
But what I'm arguing is that there is also a police culture of non-legal action against citizens, regardless of race, or presumably the gender, of the officer.
While some of my relatives were closely affiliated with the legal system, others were frequently getting arrested, often for little more than non-cooperation while getting a speeding ticket. Being a drug taking airman made me wary of the Air Force police.
Glancing over my past comments on this thread there was no admission that there are white racists in the police forces.
Authoritarian careers attract authoritarian minded people, who might then abuse their authority.

I've often wondered about the continuing threat/flight risk part setting bail and of sentencing.
...all hasn't been equal...sorry to inform. The ruling majorities have always used its armies to control(and abuse)in particular, it's minority groups. You may want to believe that the history of racism pertaining to this matter has been an equal opportunity transgressor, I'm glad to know that it hasn't been.
I've always believed that, if you have to actually tell people that you aren't a racist, you probably are.
Every political attitude w/ adherents holds a kernel of truth. Otherwise, it wouldn't be followed. Indeed, those kernels usually are wrapped in layer upon layer of BS. The task of any critical thinking person is to wipe away the BS to understand the truth, why these people think this way. Writing them all off as haters does no good.
What I gather from the above post is the rejection of guilt. Which is a good thing. The sins of the past should not be forgotten, but we should not feel guilty over them. Guilt is a terrible scourge upon humanity, an emotion whose use is only to manipulate others. Another, and far more insidious fallout, is that people, desiring to be free of it, will turn their heads away from the object of that guilt. Thus we have people hating the homeless, the disenfranchised, the poor. Why? Because to accept them for what they are brings along the feelings of guilt. The perpetuation of racism is fueled in part by that denial of guilt. Instead of saying "It wasn't my fault," the response becomes "There is no fault." Thus the legion of pseudo-intellectual theories like The Bell Curve, which puts the blame back onto the 'other.'
The solution, here, is not to assign blame at all, in any circumstance. Take responsibility for your society, yes. We are all in this together, but don't take on guilt, and don't waste time assigning blame. Everyone wants to be free of guilt, but most often, the reaction is to blame others, instead of freeing yourself from the entire wheel of blame/guilt. To do that, you imagine the world you want, the society you'll work for, for to get hung up on the past is to indulge in the endless wheel of blame/guilt.
Make no mistake: Racism, bigotry, prejudice, is a problem every human society suffers from. It is very real, very insidious, and one of it's most destructive aspects is how it recreates itself into the consciousness of those it oppresses. It is not enough to discover it in the speech of your fellow men & then cry "Racist!!!" We also need to reach out to those who are the object of this racism, to demonstrate that the oppressor (in this case, 'whitey') is not the rule, but an aberration.
There was a piece in the New York Times this morning about a Black congregation in Springfield MA whose church building, 75% completed, was destroyed by arson in the wee hours of November 5th. On fire maybe four hours after Obama's victory was called by the networks.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/17/us/17land.h...
What a tragedy on this election night, to have persons yet unknown torch a black church.
I am the grandson of immigrants from Europe around the turn of the last century, so feel personally no responsibility for the enslavement of blacks. But as an American, I acutely feel guilt for the slow progress of full civil rights for AAs and others, though there has been great improvement in the past half century. I was hopeful with Obama's candidacy that maybe there was some justification for the idea that mainstream America is tending to be post-racist, and his election adds more. This awful event in Mass. makes me wonder whether I am simply naive, or simply optimistic. Read the NYT story, and send a few bucks to the reconstruction fund (no info yet on an address, unfortunately)

"But if a black man can become president, exactly what significant barrier is left?"
A gay president or an atheist president perhaps? Not to worry, there are still a few other American minorities Tom Adkins and his fellow reichwing conservatives can bully, demonize, step on, and try to hold back. There are still good times to be had for Mr. Adkins.
I would LOVE a non-believer president. But I know that's not going to happen in this country.
but, that's satire, right? I mean let the Irish eat their babies kind of satire, right?
Great FSM what is wrong with people?!?!?
perhaps if youd stressed obama was only half black instead of he was an african american , its my understanding obamas half white, or is that racisim? i cant tell anymore,
Which half did you vote for?
...stuff go Tyree...unless you are willing to take well warranted credit also when half white people do bad things too.
The real test will come when someone wins the office who wasn't raised by white grandparents.
Maybe you need to take a test.
I was including myself in the more generic test, because it is the test of public perceptions not the candidates.
You mean electing a gay Asian-American who was raised by their adoptive mixed (one white, one Australian Aborigine) grandparents won't count!?!
Wow. We DO have a long way to go...
Although you appear to be joking, it did bring to mind that the very institution of democratically voting, with the winner getting a majority of the electorate votes, presupposes the necessity of having a candidate the majority of people can identify with, putting all the various forms of minorities at a decided disadvantage, unless of course they use political arguments designed to attract a majority of voters.
I have to disagree with you. It is not necessary that the electorate be able to identify with, like, or event want any candidate. It comes down to two candidates, and the winner is the one more preferred, or least rejected, as the case may be, of the two. Simple and fair.
The "Founding Fathers" of course realized that this would never result in the winner being the one who was actually the most preferred, overall. But the alternatives are untenable for a fair society of the people.
For example, if there were 3 candidates, the first getting 15% of the total votes, the second getting 40% of the votes, and the third getting 45% of the votes, while the third candidate was preferred by a the greatest percentage of the electorate, you would have a society where the a 45% minority get to have their way over the 55% majority.
This is why we have a 2-party system instead of a Parliamentary system. You're never going to please everybody, but a simple majority deciding between 2 candidates seems to be the "least unfair", so to speak...
That's why I went into majority supported issues in my final argument. So someone who may not personally identify with a candidate, may personally identify themselves with their political stances and solutions.
Personal identification with a candidate is basically that hockey mom, man you want to have a beer with nonsense.
Frankly, I couldn't identify myself personally with Gore or Kerry, but it didn't prevent me from voting for them, because I identified with their policies. Whereas boosh's self-identification as a "Texan," did nothing to attract this Texan.

i have not been the one who proclaimed obama was just of one race , myself although my skin is white im part cherokee and from a race that was just as cruely mistreated by whites as were blacks, the difference being cherokees were killed rather then being made slaves of, my point is thier were blacks who were born to white women who were white in color , if obama had been born white wich race would you have claimed him as? and would you have fought as hard for his election if he had been in color white, im just courious not looking for a fight,
Some half white/black people consider themselves black because of the way they have been treated all their lives.
Many "half white" slaves worked in the cotton fields.
In Louisianna all one needed was 1/8th, and one would be considered black.
well im certainly glad to see you agree with me , i hear so many say obamas a black president so get over it , what a relief to see you dont see things that way yourself , still its not the same question i asked but i suppose its more then i expected! useing the described discription of the days im talking about blacks who could pass for white were called pinkys, i guess thier were few but it happened and i guess it still does, i was just wondering what the feeling on that was !its facts not a comment ment to be racist!
He writes to what, absolve himself? I can't tell. Regardless, there will never be a shortage of dicks from the "right", that's for certain. I sure hope ol' Jebus is ready; there are an awful lot of pathetic fucks to forgive.
The deal is that he only has to forgive those that come to him. Going to church on Sunday and claiming to be a Christian don't mean squat.
Have you fed the hungry?
Have you visited those in prison?
Have you comforted the sick?
Have you clothed the poor?
Do you even KNOW any lepers!?!
No, I think he'd be able to come in late and knock off early, that day.
Step 1: make up an arbitrary litmus test that has just been achieved.
Step 2: use that arbitrary benchmark to justify your claim.
Basically, they are using an exception to prove a rule. Which is a fallacy, no wonder so many conservatives fail at science.
Alas, another thing that I find astounding is the ability for a lot of people in this country (and most of the ones I know with this "disorder" tend to subscribe to conservative ideals) to make up their own reality by simply saying that something is.
What you described is in rhetoric called Petitio Principii, as well as a tautology.
how does the election of a black man forgive your family's racist and cruel history?
IT DOESN'T!!!!
You should still feel guilty because your family IS STILL GUILTY and will be forever.
Unless you've paid reparations to formerly owned slaves or AT LEAST APOLOGIZED you're not off the hook buddy.
How can I expect to be held accountable for the actions of people I never even KNEW, whose positions I may not even agree with, and from whom I myself have received no material benefit!?! And how far back do you want to go!?! 200 years!?! 500 years!?! More!?! Slavery was a common occurrence between African tribes too, you know. Don't they deserve to get in on it!?! And what of those whose ancestors did own slaves but no record remains of it?
No, when my father dies, I don't inherit his debts. At least, not any more.
Even if you were opposed to slavery back then, you didn't have much choice. What were you supposed to do? It was against the law to teach a slave to read and write. If you freed your slaves, many states had outlawed free blacks, so they'd have to leave the state and any family that might be owned by others in the area, so you are essentially turning them out into a hostile environment, with no tools with which to survive. And fat chance of getting anyone to work for you after that, at ANY price. That is IF you were still alive after your slave-owning neighbors found out what you'd done.
No, if you opposed slavery, you could help slaves escape to the north, but if you got caught the penalty was worse for you than for the actual slave trying to escape, OR you could try to own as many slave as you could, and treat them as well as possible, OR you could try to change the laws, and that is about it. But ownership of slaves is NOT, in and of itself, evidence of complicity in, or endorsement of slavery.
The government, on the other hand WAS complicit, and DID endorse it, but how do you legislate guilt to a government?
I can't help it if my ancestors owned slaves, any more than I can help it if my ancestors were slaves.
But regardless of whether your ancestors owned slaves or were slaves, the only way we make amends for the past is by the way we treat and deal with each other in the present.
think Bush was too liberal. I have 4 brothers (I'm female) two of us voted for Barack and of course the others for Mccain. We are all boomers. The funny thing is the three that vote republican are very poor and me and the brother that voted for Barack are always bailing them out financially. Do you need flash cards to figure it out? It's amazing they vote against their best interest, but as long as them terrorist don't get us, as they say and republicans are the antidote to that. I don't know what happened to them, maybe they were dropped on their heads. In fact, my mother is a republican and had to drop some of her medical coverage under Bush but doesn't get it. She couldn't afford it anymore. I'm sure it was Clinton's fault, you know the years she had more money.
Isn't it fascinating how a 53% vote for the Democrat in no way suggests that that Democrat has mandate to govern as he promised, since the margin is slim, and the country is center-right,
BUT . . . .
A 53% vote for an African American candidate heralds that America itself is no longer racist, and African American people have no more right to complain about the hideous treatment they receive at the hands of employers, police, neighbors, etc?
Disgusting! Somehow, I think this Adkins character wrote a similar article after the popular success of Hootie and the Blowfish.
well if were going to ask for repreations fow wrongs done in the past then i must insist that tennesee and the carolinas be returned to the choctaw and cherokee nations and compensation be made from all profits that were made off these lands , decendents of the cherokees who owned farms confiscated by the government be restored to thier decendents and compensations be made for the deaths that occoured by the deaths that happend to thoes who perrished on the trail of tears to oklahoma!
In the 1960s, American liberals began yanking that millstone while sticking a fork in the eye of black Americans, exacerbating the racial divide to extort a socialist solution to the country's problems.
Liberals have always stood up for the disadvantaged, women, child workers, blacks, gays, etc. That's good politics and humanitarian at the same time. Perverting that compassion and calling it "...sticking a fork in the eye of black Americans..." for "socialism" is another right wing delusion and lame attempt to rewrite history.
Racism will be over when the statement "all men are created equal" is believed wholeheartedly by all Americans.
Well there was some problems with social spending programs. There are more white poor than any other, but a smaller percentage of their group overall. The welfare system tended to entrap people. If one got a job, not only would they lose food support but would have to pay for gas, child-care, medicaid etc and end up losing more necessary money to take an underpaying job.
With special hiring quotas people across the political spectrum might wonder if someone only got a good job because of preferential quotas, or because they were good at what they did. Conversely, some wondered if qualified applicants were turned away, because the quota was already filled.
But that's not to say the programs were not needed, but needed to be tweaked. It goes back to fixing it, not disposing of it.
For racist assholes like this motherfucker, it never existed.
Corruption of blood?
Apparently, this guy hasn't spent any time in Tennessee.
From California to Maine, 'hundreds' of incidents reveal...

Nothing to see here...MOVE ALONG!
the cops had been TOLD racism was over, they could have just let shit go.
I guess that it take the news of these declarations takes awhile to trickle down to the hoi polloi -- it must be backed up behind all that cash we've been waiting for since the Reagan era.
And furthermore...WHERE is my flying car?
your flying car was delivered yesterday , check your garage!
Why am I ALWAYS the last to know?

The election of a black president triggered at least 200 hate-related incidents.
http://www.csmonitor.com/2008/1117/p03s01-usp...
And it's only been 2 weeks!
In the beginning, the overt assholes will pipe up with some stupid criminal acts, and be thrown in the hoosegow for decades. The scum on the top just needs to be skimmed off.
..right after we've learned that Obama has had more threats to his life than any other president-elect.
and in the face of various "Obama-related" attacks around the country--like the woman whose parish priest essentially kicked her out of church for having "Obama" signs on her car.
I remember Sandra Day O'Connor talking nonsense like that 20 years ago. They're still trying to convince--who? themselves? me? non-White people? WHO ARE THEY PLAYING TO??
Neoconservatives also will use Obama's victory to argue that Affirmative Action is not needed since a black man (biracial, actually) became an accomplished lawyer and U.S. Senator before winning the highest office in the land.
and living in both the old and young (who were taught by their parents to hate). These scum bags need to get with the program and get over it. The best thing we can do is to keep making this issue as public as possible and expose these cretins for who they really are.
It's people like us, who in the past, have done the right thing, which is how and why we are now able to have a black president. So we need to continue doing what is right. It wasn't easy then and it won't be easy now.
The test of how far we have come in this country is not in our own behavior regarding racial diversity, but in our behavior in the presence of racial intolerance and bigotry.
Racism is shameful and cowardly. We defeat it by exposing it to the light of day for all to see.
WRIGHT BROTHERS BUILD SUCCESSFUL AIRCRAFT
Conservatives Declare Gravity "Dead and Buried"
Than blacks voted for him.
I love how Adkins makes the point that a high percentage of Blacks voted for him, and that means THEY'RE racist. Sadly, the candidate the ENTIRE WORLD sees as the more qualified, intelligent, well-spoken, more presidential candidate would never would have won without that high of a black vote.
All you have to do is do a quick Google of Adkins to realise he's a shill who'll say anything to make a buck. He also claimed on the eve of the '07 new year that the real estate market would go up 10% and that there was nothing wrong with all-interest loans.
Mr. Adkins,
Your shameless article on "White Guilt" is one of the reasons hack conservatives like you have lost power and will hopefully never regain it. How you could even begin to claim that a millstone was hung around your neck in the 60's when segregation was legal, blacks were beaten by police and terrorized by their dogs for daring to speak up and "states rights" was a euphemism for state sanctioned racism is impressive in it's ugly historical revisionism. Only a person in denial of his own repressed guilt, anger and racism could in my opinion even begin to conceive of such a thing.
To state that our new president was "race-hustling banks, praying in a racist church for 20 years, and actively working with America-hating domestic terrorists" reveals your pathetic anger at realizing that a clear pluralistic majority have rejected your politics of fear and intimidation. Your claim of euphoria is so transparent that only the ignorant who blindly agree with your hate of all things fair, progressive and liberal will fail to see through it. To insist that liberals were "sticking a fork in the eye of black Americans, exacerbating the racial divide to extort a socialist solution to the country's problems" is something that only a wingnut paranoia could begat. It even looks like you failed to realize you repeated "So today, I'm feeling a little "uppity," if you will" twice because it clearly wasn't repeated as a literary device. And using terms like "uppity" and "shuffling"... please, are you so full of bile you can't even see that is just as racist as refusing to acknowledge that Obama is just as much white as he is black?
You are right about one thing though, even if you used it in the wrong context... "it's filthy".
"So ... Wham!!!"
That's the sound of you slamming your head against the wall of ignorance. Fortunately there is little brain matter left to clean up, toss in the toilet and flush away with the rest of the ejected human waste.
Talk about putting the cart before the horse. To assume that the "era of white guilt" is over, it would first be necessary to assure that the bigotry upon which the guilt is based is completely gone. Any cognitive person alive knows that is nowhere near today's reality. This man's millstone must be very heavy indeed for him to grasp at such illogical straws for some analgesic rationalization to relieve the pain of his guilt.
I'm no longer religious, but I do remember that I was taught absolution comes only after an honest contrition, and a resolution to not repeat the sin. Some of us might have come to that resolution, but to assume we are all now there is completely delusional.
Go to any "conservative" blog and post anything about Obama that is remotely positive and watch what happens. It's lot tossing a bleeding cow into the Amazon. The swarming anger and utter contempt for Obama is palpable. Most of these people consciously chose to believe all the slurs that came out of Palin's mouth during the campaign because the lies and distortions confirmed their own prejudices and misgivings about having a black man elected President of the United States. It doesn't matter how carefully and methodically you try to disassemble their accusations with well-reported facts, they hold onto their hatred with white knuckles. That kind of moral certainty only comes via bigotry. Now, of course, not all people who disagree with Obama's stated policies are racists. There are many legitimate conservatives who are simply concerned about his liberal track record and what he'll do after he's inaugurated. But those people also routinely concede pride in the fact that an African-American was elected president. Many admit that tears ran down their cheeks as they watched the event in Grant Park on election night. But the people on sites like redstate.com and NewsBusters.org do not fit into that category. And the internet is littered with these Obama hate-fests that masquerade a political blogs. And I'm sure that's just the surface of this country's ugly under-belly of racial prejudice, which is a fat as ever. We still have a long, long way to go.
