I usually could give a shit about professional sports, but this was hilarious. He totally checked that dude. That ref must've zoned out for a second and was reliving his glory days.
You can watch his feet and see him sliding along, and then he launches himself forward to hit the guy like a linebacker would. He could have taken steps sideways to avoid the ball carrier, but he went forward for the guy instead.
Referees are supposed to neutral. It's like when the 5 Republican appointed conservative activist judges on the Supreme Court tackled Al Gore for George Bush.
And boy are we as a nation paying for that play interference.
I believe both JFK and Nixon became armchair coaches of football teams during their term in office, and drove the real coaches crazy. Let's hope Obama doesn't do that with a sports team.
It happened during the LSU vs South Carolina game this past Saturday (10/18/08). The SEC released a statement saying that the referee was just trying to get out of the way. It's all over ESPN and CNNSI...
Out of the way of what? The imaginary freight train passing through the field? There was nothing to get out of the way of! SEC is just covering for their referee's idiocy. I dont think the ref was trying to throw the game or anything - Im sure it was just one of those mental farts - like when someone is walking towards you and you mean to veer one way to avoid collision but instead veer right into them for some unexplained reason - but he was definitely not getting out of the way of anything.
It can be dangerous for refs, especially in football, but some of them get into bad positions. Years back in a soccer match, I had to clear a soccer ball upfield and it wound up hitting a ref square in the ass. Kinda frustrating in the moment, but also kinda funny.
The ref planted his feet and put his shoulder into it just like players are taught to do. This ref isn't, by any chance, a moonlighting DOJ attorney is he?
SC scored a few plays later to go up on GT before half. but couldn't hold on for the win mostly because we had them +2 and wtf knows how many more buffalo wild wings plays there were !!
Actually, the SEc and the South Carolina coach have come out and said the ref did nothing wrong. He was in the ocrrect position and was a victim of circumstances. This particular camera angle makes it look worse than ti was.
Give me a break. I can't believe they expect us to buy that it was an accident. Basically they are saying, who you going to believe us, or your lying eyes? Well I'm going to believe my lying eyes, it was no accident. That ref needs to be fired.
Don't they teach this to everyone in football? Had the wonderful LSU player not finished the tackle on the gawdless Gamecock, the ref would have looked quite the fool.

There is no way in hell that was an accident! a ref trying to get out of the way does n ot step into an oncoming player and lower his shoulder.... I dont care what angle you veiw it from, he meant to do what he did....If you believe that was accidental,i have some ocean front property in arkansas to sell you...
In the SEC, anytime an underdog is looking competitive against a highly ranked team, the refs cheat their asses off.
It is in the financial interest of the conference to get teams to the high-payout bowl games, and they will rob the athletes to make sure it happens.
I hate chickenshits...
Everyone in authority, the BCS, the SEC, even the coaches, are all aligned together in denying what everyone saw. "Who you gonna believe, me or your lyin' eyes?"
Same thing w/ the media ignoring the virulent & rampant bigotry, hatred & ignorance that is being exposed by the imminence of Obama's victory. There are few in the MSM who are willing to admit that a large sector of Americans are dangerously ignorant, violent, and that these are the core group of the GOP.
The Dems' victory in two weeks is going to be the first stop in a dangerous conflict w/in America. These people must be taken into account, they live off of self-pity and feeling marginalized. It's not going to be easy for the real American patriots.
Get back to what's important -- either the saving of the United States or its utter destruction at the hands of lying, cheating, murdering Republicans.
I played fullback during my last year of High School football (it's too painful to say how long ago that was).
In the second half of a fairly tight game I was given the ball on a 32 dive; I plunged across the line, shook off the middle linebacker and got a couple of yards into the secondary and ... stopped suddenly because the 60-year-old Ref was right in front of me.
"GET OUT OF MY WAY!" I snarled through my mouthpiece, reaching up with my free hand and throwing the poor guy to the ground. I managed a step or two before the entire defensive secondary caught up with me and planted me about a foot into the field.
MAN, was I pissed. We were on their 35 yard line or thereabouts, and I had a shot at the end zone.
We won anyway. After the game the Ref came over to apologize. I laughed and told him I should have read his block better. So it was all good. Eventually.
Sports? WTF!
And first post!
Bite my shiny metal ass.

to throw the game?

That's what I thought, too. He forgot he was the referee. Very funny!

Not professional. Division I Southeastern Conference Football. LSU vs South Carolina.
I concur. You don't watch sports often.

I'd run another play in his direction and take his ass out

Some stuff you can't make up!
that would be great fun just to watch. :-)
That is what I call Bush Justice League officiating.

...when you have to play the referees, too. The 12th man, perhaps.
If you guys think that's real I have a small plumbing business located in Toledo OH for sale, just $250K!
It's real bucko.
I saw it elsewhere. It was too strange to believe at first.
I saw it live and said WTF?!? to myself. They then replayed it right after twice to confirm that everyone saw what they thought they saw.

He's a black Islamic muslim terrorist sympathizer who hates whitey.

No difference than the MSM throwing blocks for the republicans.
Yeah, this one is pretty crazy.

heck its plain to see this ref was just wanting to feel the guy up!
not that thiers anything wrong with that!
The ref planted his feet and put his shoulder into it just like players are taught to do. This ref isn't, by any chance, a moonlighting DOJ attorney is he?
Hasa Diga Eebowai
Why hasn't this ref been suspended by the SEC?
This wasn't an accident. He didn't try to avoid the player: he obviously moved right into his path.
If this is as deliberate as it looks, why does this guy still have his whistle?
He's a republican.

A problem with your theory...SC was playing LSU, not GT
we lost the SC LSU bet
and covered the GT Clemson bet I palin'ed that one sorry.
thanks for fixing my theory..............

Roughing the passer. 15 game suspension. Turn in your zebra stripes and hit the showers

You've got to wrap up the ball carrier.

Here's what's really funny. The ref that did that is about 60.
It's challenging enough being a Democrat in SC. We don't need to have to fight the refs all the time too...
You mean to tell me there are democrats at USC? How am I supposed to hate all of you indiscriminately now? :(
/go clemson
(yeah that looked like a brain-fart back to the glory days to me as well)
Maybe the refs a minuteman. He saw the QBs name was Garcia and out of habit he kept him from crossing the line of scrimmage.
