Why does SNL understand the Republican Party better than the media?

Repugs are an easy group to understand, obnoxious, loud, racist, low intelligence, always appeal to their crowd with the crudest thoughts. It's why Reagan was a wet dream for them, thick empty head but smiles alot. Like my Governor, Tim Pawlenty.

SNL is waaaay past it's prime, and needs to be put out to pasture.

But that being said, comedians look for absuridity, and politics provides a plentiful menu.
I'm one of about twenty three who has watched SNL continuously since I became aware of it's existance in the seventies. I even watched it through the Piscopo years. Ouch!
Comedy ain't pretty sometimes, but I'm willing to sift through the black sand to find some color. Many talented folk have rotated through those hallowed doors and I've been pleased to follow their developement.

I see your Piscopo and raise you a Billy Crystol, a Harry Shearer, and if you still don't fold...an EDDIE MURPHY! (The GUMBY years!) Not funny. Chevy Chase doing Gerald Ford. NOT FUNNY! If it wasn't for the TV FUNHOUSE skits, the show would be about as funny as getting a vasectomy without anaesthetic. The funniest "live" thing to happen on that show in the last few years wasn't even intentional. I cracked a smile when Ashley Simpson got exposed for the talentless brat she is, and had to walk off the set, but that was about the only chuckle I've had in 20 years.
That being said...THEIR RATINGS GO THROUGH THE ROOF whenever they lampoon Republicans and the Media. You'd think they'd take the hint, and do it more often. Try and steal some of their audience back from Stewart and Colbert.
Beauty and humor are matters of taste.

I quit watching SNL while it was still funny. I get my chuckles and real news from Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert now.
When was it EVER funny? My latest theory is that it just SEEMED funny when we were young, and we were usually watching it when we were drunk. But as soon as our livers gave out, so did the ratings. :)

Maybe not the news media, but generally still a member of the Media.
Actually, there is no "media" left in the U.S.A. that I'm aware of. Maybe Bill Moyers, Charley Rose, FRONTLINE and NPR count as the worm-eaten ruins of a once legitimate media. But really, all that's left is infotainment. Fox News, CNN...they may as well be selling miracle car wax. NBC, ABC and CBS...as the more legitimate news outlets, are now at the level we used to expect from gossip news shows, like Entertainment Tonight, Extra, and Hard Copy. Beh... Seriously, we'd all be better off watching BBC World News, which is what I do whenever I have the chance.

TV producers have turned news and political discourse into professional wrestling style freak shows. How can they go back to truth, reality, and real issues now? That would take retooling and it's an unexplored venue. They lost the majority of American viewers long ago though. All they have left is the freak show demographic. Too bad it's a big demographic, also set in it's ways. Look how long Saturday afternoon Wrestling has been on TV.

unless you are actually Ann Coulter. This was a nice try, but I didn't get the gut-wrenching twist in the pit of my stomach as I listened to her. It's an art appreciation thing. The ART of being Ann Coulter can be duplicated ONLY by the master, Ann Coulter. All other efforts fall short of their mark because Ann coulter is a magnificent SATANIC SINGULARITY.
There is a caustic rancorous vindictiveness to her that is matched by none.

SNL doesn't always work for me, but I laughed hard at this one.

That was absolutely hilarious. They captured her essence to a T. I hope SNL stays on top of the GOP since we know the MSM will not. The 'news' departments are run by the 'media divisions' (since the 70s & helped along by Clinton's Telecommunications Act of 1996....
So...the media arm, decided...yep, there's a void we can fill, but we'll cleverly mask it through comedy...aha!
Which is why people that give a crap, watch The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, and Saturday Night Live....to get their news.

Actually, it was quite a poor rendition of the hideous Coulter. Similar to the awful portrayal of Keith Olbermann last year on SNL. You'd think with all the real ammunition at hand, they'd do a better job skewering these nutjobs. And yes, some of us even minded people see them both as nut jobs.
