Before Obama Met Salahi, George Met Jack

bush_abramoff_49c65.JPG

When it comes to social events at the White House, the only thing worse for a President than self-serving gate crashers is when the miscreant has an invitation. And so while conservatives gloat over the Secret Service failure that allowed climbers Michaele and Tareq Salahi to crash the state dinner for the Indian prime minister, it's worth remembering that when Republican uber lobbyist and convicted felon Jack Abramoff roamed the Bush White House, he was an honored guest.

For his part, President Obama has ordered a review into how the Virginia couple and would-be reality TV stars made their way into this week's function. For their part, even conservative bloggers fretted about the disturbing security lapse that allowed the Salahis to come "face to face with The One himself." But as another predictably suggested, it's all Obama's fault even when it isn't:

"It unfortunately also embarrasses the Secret Service, Obama, and pretty much the entire White House. It was Obama's first state dinner, and how will people remember it? They'll remember that two famewhore socialites snuck in and that his security allowed it to happen. This, for once, is not Obama's fault, but he's the one embarrassed by it inevitably. I wonder how long it will take him to blame this on President Bush, though."

Of course, you can't blame George W. Bush for letting the Salahis slither their way into a White House social function. But letting Jack Abramoff through the door is another matter altogether.

As you'll recall, in September 2008, Abramoff was sentenced to four years in prison for a lobbying scandal whose tentacles spread throughout Capital Hill and the Bush administration. And as the Washington Post recounted, Abramoff would have a lot of company in jail from among the ranks of his Republican colleagues:

More than a dozen people, including an Ohio congressman and a deputy secretary of the interior, have been convicted in the Abramoff lobbying scandal, and Justice Department officials said the investigation is continuing. Still under scrutiny are former House majority leader Tom DeLay (R-Tex.) and retiring Rep. John T. Doolittle (R-Calif.).

Which is why the Bush White House was desperate to erase any evidence of the association between Abramoff, the President and his highest level staffers. On January 26th, 2006, President Bush denied any relationship with Abramoff, a "Pioneer" who raised over $100,000 for his reelection campaign:

"You know, I, frankly, don't even remember having my picture taken with the guy. I don't know him."

As it turned out, of course, George W. Bush knew Jack Abramoff and had his picture taken with the guy several times.

After the administration and Secret Service stonewalled repeated requests to release the complete visitor logs detailing Abramoff's arrivals, the House Government Reform Committee in September 2006 issued a damning report on his unimpeded access to the Bush White House. The bipartisan, 93-page analysis issued by ranking Republican Tom Davis (R-VA) and Democrat Henry Waxman (D-CA) concluded current reporting requirements "failed to protect public officials from the ethical undertow generated by Abramoff's claims of access to executive branch deliberations, particularly at the White House."

That report documented what had been a revolving door between Abramoff's lobbying operation and the Bush White House. As the Washington Post reported:

Disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff and his colleagues billed their clients for more than 400 contacts with White House officials between 2001 and 2004, to a report released yesterday by the House Government Reform Committee...

The report, based on 14,000 e-mails and other documents, conveys many assertions by Abramoff and his team about their efforts to lobby White House officials on matters affecting their Indian tribal clients.

Abramoff's team offered officials tickets to 19 sporting events and concerts, the report states, but "in many instances the documents do not indicate whether the White House officials requested or attended the events." One who did accept tickets, the report said, was Susan Ralston, executive assistant to White House presidential adviser Karl Rove.

Among those Jack Abramoff was glad-handing was President George W. Bush.

bush_abramoff_rove_4f4a7.JPG

As Time explained in January 2006, the denials from Bush and press secretary Scott McClellan ("The President does not know him, nor does the President recall ever meeting him.") were simply laughable in the face of numerous photos (later scrubbed) from the presidential receptions Abramoff attended:

In one shot that TIME saw, Bush appears with Abramoff, several unidentified people and Raul Garza Sr., a Texan Abramoff represented who was then chairman of the Kickapoo Indians, which owned a casino in southern Texas. Garza, who is wearing jeans and a bolo tie in the picture, told TIME that Bush greeted him as "Jefe," or "chief" in Spanish. Another photo shows Bush shaking hands with Abramoff in front of a window and a blue drape. The shot bears Bush's signature, perhaps made by a machine. Three other photos are of Bush, Abramoff and, in each view, one of the lobbyist's sons (three of his five children are boys). A sixth picture shows several Abramoff children with Bush and House Speaker Dennis Hastert, who is now pushing to tighten lobbying laws after declining to do so last year when the scandal was in its early stages.

All Americans should be concerned for their President's safety when gate crashers can seemingly maneuver their way into a secure, invitation-only event at the White House. But the national embarrassment Americans feel about when Obama met Salahi should pale in comparison to when George met Jack.

It's past time to see if the SS was packed with Republican fanatics.

They certainly had no compunction about violating the rights of citizens legally wearing t-shirts that the repugs didn't like at Shrubs events and yet have strangely been completely ineffective protecting Obama from fully armed right wing lunatics with loaded long rifles well within sniper range at his events.

I think it is time to see what has been done quietly behind the scenes at the Secret Service during Shrubs reign, I would not put it past him to pack it with loyalists while firing those who weren't of his fanatical persuasions.

It’s interesting that the Secret Service was originally part of the Treasury Dept, in charge of stopping counterfeit currency. As of 2003, the department is part of the “Homeland Security” debacle.

I think the Secret Service did their jobs at the state dinner. The two gate-crashers were never a real threat and were screened. It’s just no one asked to see their invitation (or checked to see if they were on the list). It’s not like two Puerto Ricans stormed the place and shot people on their way to kill the president (that happened in 1950 under Truman).

This incident is more of a social faux pas than a security concern.

was there every day without proper credentials but of course he was a propaganda tool for Bush.

That's not the only kind of "tool" Gannon was. I would bet he was "tooling" around with a whole bunch of those closet republican's like Drier, Foley, Craig, Graham, Melman, etc......, etc.........,

Isn't it funny how the Blame Clinton for Everything crowd gets nettled whenever we point to the REAL source of America's current problems? Hey Wingers, Bush is blamed for many things that he did, because he DID do them, and we are still paying for them. The most corrupt justice department ever; deregulation of Wall Street and big business that has led to rampant criminal activity and the near meltdown of our economy... an illegal war that took our attention, resources, and manpower away from the folks that attacked us... In short, we blame Bush for so much, because he (and his administration) have so much to answer for.

ump902a's picture

While I stand second to none in my contempt for "W", I must say that Clinton does bear much of the blame for the Wall Street debacle. The deregulation bill he signed in 1999 set the stage for the financial bubble to follow.

After balloon boy, and now this "reality show" returds, are we gonna have a return of the game show scandals, and resume normal, relatively better, programming?

Jeff Gannon/Guckert?

You know, the male prostitute posing as a journalist inside the White House press corps?

One might be tempted to think the homophobes would be far more threatened by him?

easy: they won't

sure the loonie right fringes will try to make this into a larger story about the obama admin, but they are the ones still wondering if obama is from earth (or whatever the current rant is)

if anything, in my discussions, the average joe seems to blame the wanna-be-celebs, and expressed concerned about obama's safety.

Handypants's picture
Yep

"expressed concerned about obama's safety"

That seems to be most people. It is the only real concern anybody should have.

There's a pack of lone gunmen we always have to be concerned about.

a non-accusing accusation, i guess:

STEPHANOPOULOS: We have just about a minute left. And just quickly on this pretty crazy story at the Indian state dinner. A couple was able to crash the gates. And, George, at first, you know, you laugh at it, how can they possibly do this? You know these guys are going to go sell the story. But it's a pretty serious security breach.

WILL: At the end of the day, it's not funny. There is an old axiom that applies elsewhere but not in Washington, that when there's no penalty for failure, failure proliferates. This was a failure of security of major proportions. And let's see whose job is lost.

ROBERTS: I feel sorry for the Secret Service. Look, you know, you're in this situation, that at a White House gate. It's raining. People are pushing in. And they're all somebody fancy. And you're more likely to get in trouble if you hold them up and question them and have them be, you know, all uppity with you.

STEPHANOPOULOS: But that may be why that person -- the Secret Service should not have been unaccompanied at the gate by someone with the actual list.

KRUGMAN: (inaudible). And this president receives I believe a record number of death threats. Let's just say, this -- we don't know how seriously to take it, but you should not be taking any -- cutting any corners on protecting this president.

DOWD: To me, it's a bigger commentary on society. When basically people now seek fame for fame and celebrity sake, but they're not going to, like, invent a vaccine, they're not going to, like, run a mile in under four minutes. They want fame, have a Bravo television camera come, and the whole thing is now about gaining celebrity, not doing something substantive and getting celebrity after.

SENOR: I would say this is probably not the administration's fault. And I agree with you, also, that the Secret Service is probably going to get a bum rap here. But to the extent that there's a big discussion going on right now, people starting to question the competence of this administration, certainly on the heels of this China trip, that people are raising big questions about the competence, how this Afghan review strategy was run -- this is not the administration's fault, but ...

(CROSSTALK)

STEPHANOPOULOS: You guys can discuss this in the green room.

now THERE is a bastion of integrity *cough*

the right is trying to make this an anti-obama issue, but is having a hard time b/c the potential threat was obama's personal safety. it is almost funny, coming from the group that has bent over backwards warning of the grave dangers of the obama presidency, hearing them now try to criticize obama for a lapse in his own security.

talk about feigned concern: the rightwing would have LOVED for something to happen to the president

Gannon had sleep overs at the White House. I thought it was pretty well established that "Turd Blossom" was intimate with their "special" reporter. Such short memories.

Gee I can't imagine how he got that nickname.

Personally, I think it was a great social engineering hack, no harm done. I think the whole thing is funny as hell. Now the SS needs to button up whatever security hole they slipped through.

Bush got the Secret Service to pass his homosexual prostitute Jeff Gannon (Guckert) into the White House under his false name.

So much news goes by so fast nowadays that people only have time to comprehend the most current media blitz.
People aren't discussing the war anymore. Not in depth.
The health care issue has dropped off the radar.
Now it's about some stupid people who crashed the State Dinner for publicity. So they can sell their story for money.
We have now stepped back into the twilight zone.

What is your conceptual, continuity?

mudshark's picture

This is just another example of the double standard the GOPers are applying.
And the voting gopers see nothing wrong with it.

Goodnight, Frau Blücher

The Washington Post has lot's of details about the Salahis (Salamis, whatever). Turns out they owe money all over the place. They keep trying to use the parent's winery biz as a front. Winery has unplugged their phone. All their stuff, car, boat , house, isn't paid for. She tells people she's a supermodel, Redskins cheerleader (isn't either). He owes money for Polo matches that flopped.Owes caterers lots of money for failed events. Two bit Grifters. Doesn't seem like that reality show is going to be happening anytime soon. Tooo Funny.

I'd just like to add I think it's funny when people try to cut the Secret Service slack because they might be afraid of getting yelled at by some a-hole snobs or two bit grifters. I think the Secret Service needs to be a little more thick skinned, YA THINK?

DO NOT cloud the issue with the old 'their crook was bigger' argument. The Secret Service should NOT have let this happen, would NOT let it happen under the Dick and George show, and have pretty much made it known to a very angry minority that Obama can be got.

God, I'm pissed.
