Surging Over the Cracks In Afghanistan
By Steve Hynd Friday Jan 02, 2009 4:00pmThe Surge in Iraq essentially became a plan to bribe militants with guns and barrowloads of cash to not attack US troops and that left the core corruption, graft and incompetencies of the Iraqi government untouched and thus left the seeds of future conflict while temporarily tamping down violence to a level which would still horrify anyone West of Beirut. The planned surge in Afghanistan is likely to do the same there.
Want to be a provincial police chief? It will cost you $100,000.
Want to drive a convoy of trucks loaded with fuel across the country? Be prepared to pay $6,000 per truck, so the police will not tip off the Taliban.
Need to settle a lawsuit over the ownership of your house? About $25,000, depending on the judge.
“It is very shameful, but probably I will pay the bribe,” Mohammed Naim, a young English teacher, said as he stood in front of the Secondary Courthouse in Kabul. His brother had been arrested a week before, and the police were demanding $4,000 for his release. “Everything is possible in this country now. Everything.”
Kept afloat by billions of dollars in American and other foreign aid, the government of Afghanistan is shot through with corruption and graft. From the lowliest traffic policeman to the family of President Hamid Karzai himself, the state built on the ruins of the Taliban government seven years ago now often seems to exist for little more than the enrichment of those who run it.
It's utterly unclear how 30,000 extra American soldiers in the South are intended to remedy this situation - and if corruption remains untouched then allied forces will have to remain there in perpetuity to ensure any level of cohesive governance at all. Thus the two greatest drivers of the Taliban's resurgent insurgency will remain intact and anything done in Helmland takes on the character of an extended game of whack-a-mole.
However, extending cycles of violence until the point where they dropped off the medias radar worked in Iraq and gave the US an excuse to head (mostly) for the exits. The same might be true in Afghanistan. Matt Yglesias writes:
What I do think it’s worth reflecting on is what a big deal it really turns out to have been that the Bush administration screwed up back in the winter of 2001-2002 and failed to capute Osama bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri, Mullah Omar, and the rest of the top al-Qaeda / Taliban leadership. Had we done that, I think we still would have been under a general moral and prudential obligation to try to assist the people of Afghanistan. But transforming Afghanistan into a prosperous, stable government with an effective central authority has always been a tall order. And if we’d achieved our core security objectives back six and a half years ago, then the stakes would be much lower if down the road foreign troops started to wear out their welcome for whatever reason. We could just leave.
Foreign troops have already worn out their welcome - even Karzai is looking for a timetable nowadays. But we're no closer to "a prosperous, stable government with an effective central authority" than we've ever been in Iraq - just as the Kurds or the federalist/seperatists of Basra - yet we're still leaving. It occurs to me that an Obama administration might look to re-engineer the exit from Iraq for Afghanistan. Paper over the cracks for long enough if they can, declare victory and visibly leave, while repurposing a large part of any occupation forces as "trainers". Then, of course, any later collapse isn't officially our fault for invading in the first place...

january 20th the dumbocrats officially become the next crimminals in the war on finishing the bush cheny goals in afganistan! obummer reporting abord as ordered sirs!
Obama will become just the next war-criminal in-Chief of the US empire.
I wonder how many tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, or dare-say, millions, will die on his watch, or on his command.
The Military Industrial Energy/Media Complex played Americans for fools.
if it's any consolation, and we are all in this sickening mess together.
Your spelling and grammar shows signs of an angry drunk. I love you man
If the American populace holds him to his words, he will have to end these stupid, pointless Bush-Wars!
A general sit-down strike would be a nice start, since the economy is all the rage now.
right. like that will happen with this dumbed-down population.
These are not Bush-wars.
These are empire-building wars of the Military Industrial Complex.
And the Democrats can be depended on to continue them in the same locations, or by expanding them elsewhere.
Truth B Told
Very well said. Afghanistan and Iraq have an excellent chance of becoming Vietnam redux. Your last sentence is verified by such noteworthy books such as:
Savage Mules by Dennis Perrin
The Democrats: A Critical History by Lance Selfa
The Liberal Defence of Murder by Richard Seymour
All of these books, as you correctly observe, point out how the Democrats are just as culpable of starting and maintaining acts of aggression around the world as their Republican counterparts.
Thanks for those sources you have cited, I will check them out.
So you can fuck your 5 young wives to death (even though you are a 70 year old warlord with E.D.)?
No problemo!!
We'll keep you supplied with the little blue pill and you just go have some fun with the girls and stay out of our way while we "promote democracy".
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/...
btw, those are usually underage girls who are "married" to these tribal elders.
What's happening is a combination of escalation, bribery, and suborning of corruption. Why disguise that reality by tacitly endorsing the cynical euphemism "surge"?
Why does it matter? Because the "surge" has been presented simply as an increase in the number of troops committed, not as the complex and morally questionable reality it truly is. The more we accept that term, the more we encourage Americans to think that the first response to international conflict should always be to send in more troops.
It matters!
"....state built on the ruins of the Taliban government seven years ago now often seems to exist for little more than the enrichment of those who run it."
Sounds like they have been quite the apt pupils, they have learned their lesson well. They are emulating the American form of (cough cough) Democracy perfectly.
has the afgan puppets of cheny installed pay tollroad booths yet in the kyber pass? could be very profitable !
cut the military budget in half we are fucked as a nation if we aren't already.
Beware the military industrial complex was good advice. Too bad nobody took it.
Now it is too powerful and runs everything. Anyone getting in their way is dead meat.
Are we ever going to learn? I'm tired of this shit.
Wanna win a "war" like this invasion? Shower them with food, necessities of life, medicines, updated hospital equipment etc. It would STILL be cheaper than throwing bombs and missiles at them in war machines that use a gallon of fuel per second. But again, NONE of the nations involved in this fake antiterror fiasco want to "win" anything. They want to rape, pillage, bomb, kill, maim, and then install puppet dictatorship number ____. Just like Iraq. The money wasted on these two fake wars could have eliminated or reduced world hunger almost overwhelmingly. Dem, Repub, same crap.
well said
the only thing we will accomplish by escalating the afghan war is another source of inspiration for extremist organizations to recruit on.
I have a cure for the Israeli conflict too. Cut entire military and non military funding to Israel. No giveaways, and no military assistance until they go to the peace table. Dial up Hamas. Send in a REAL peacekeeping force, equipped with food, water, and a construction industry ready to give these poor people a safe place to sleep. Israel bombs while there? Massive artillery aimed at wherever their leadership is at the time. Once both are at the peace table, lay it on the line. "We will help BOTH sides, but not until conditions are met." Then force concessions from both using the purse strings of the world.Enough is enough of this crap. No more military arms sales to any nation in the world. Make your own or do without.
Well said, CC, and I include Samson in that salute for his comment also.
"Those who refuse to learn from history are doomed to repeat it."
Yes, the Russians will get a hearty chuckle when the U.S. Body Bags start piling up at Arlington with the grieving widows and widowers. ("We've been there....we've done that...didn't work.")
I've heard that trying to fight the Afghani's is like walking into a cave full of scorpions. You'll probably get stung and you'll probably die. They're pissed, they're ready to fight, they have foreign help from "other countries" who hate our f'ing guts...oh...and we don't belong there!!!!
Yes, President Obama. Try to take over Afghanistan, "find Osama bin (CIA) Laden", stop the growing of poppies and bring American style democracy to the warlords! I'm sure they're just DYING for a fight with the U.S. (Oh, Memo to Barack...according to the now very dead Ms. Bhutto, Osama's been dead for several years now...)
I'm quite certain Medvedev and Putin will understand your pain. That is if you even HAVE a "conscience" to feel it. We shall see what kind of man and "Christian" you are, Mr. Obama.
I cannot help but wonder, even before Inauguration Day, especially considering Obama's silence regarding Israel's internationally illegal carnage against the people of Gaza...what will HIS legacy be???
Look at the expense of this poor man's stay:
So this guy, charged with NOTHING has been held for 7 years. Total cost? 14 million plus a 3.2 million dollar jail. 17....get that?...17 MILLION BUCKS and was NEVER charged!!
I mean, only our for-profit prison system could bilk the stupid taxpayers so efficiently...
http://news.sympatico.msn.cbc.ca/abc/Local/ON...
Yeah, and give someone an education and they call you a fucking commie. Go figure
You can "paper" over this shit all you want, and if you think these people hate us now, just wait.....
because bullshit politics is again dictating what should be a sensible military agenda.
the word 'surge' is the current media panacea. the pols and media should all be put on the front lines and face the taliban armed only with the fucking platitudes they use to describe this ridiculous carnage.
When were the Taliban the replacement "evil" of Al Qaeda? When did the world invade to kill them there terrist Taliban, that just a few months before 911 we were all giving financial aid to? Suddenly, they slipped out the back door and became evil. The military agenda that is stated in the media is all bogus. The only crime these people have ever commited was the crime of being born poor in the wrong part of the world. Give the people food, clothing, medicine and shelter, and there would be no "terrists" left to be jealous of our so called freedoms over here.
I'd be willing to wager every last nickel of Bill Gates bank account that any poster on here, or hell, any resident of either Canada or the US, would fight back the exact same way if a military invasion happened here. If we didn't have the weaponry, we would improvise, just like these people are. Bombs are creating terrorists, not killing them.
"charlie wilson's war"
puts your statement into proper perspective. we had a chance to do just what you said after we helpd the mujahadeen beat the russians. than we walked away when the people were screaming their love for us at the top of their lungs.
Solution: Give the Taliban complete control of Afghanistan in return for helping us to capture or kill bin Laden and his followers and our permanent exit from the country. At least the production of opium will be stopped (cutting off funds to BushCo), and the warlords will be killed or driven out by the Taliban. Polls show that the vast majority of Afghanis would prefer to be ruled by the Taliban than by the pigs that now dominate their nation.
An inducement to the Taliban would be the knowledge that if they refuse to accept the deal, we will pull out our troops and eradicate them and al Qaeda with neutron bombs even if that means completely destroying Afghanistan.
well fuck now how the hell we going to build that oil and gas pipeline with all that radiation ?
Truly it would be better for the people of the planet if we ENCOURAGED them to grow MORE poppies to produce MORE morphine for all our fellow human beings who are currently dying all over the world in dire pain from various forms of cancer, etc. because the countries (like India for example) cannot get enough morphine! Google it!
In 2009, with technology as it is, there is no reason for any human being to be dying with terminal cancer or to have any PAIN that is unrelieved because we're spatting with a bunch of Afghanistan warlords.
Can we please create that necessary leap in consciousness that is needed in order to stop unnecessary human suffering?
Abbybwood, R.N.
That's just great, isn't it. Our troops and the locals are suffering horrible, painful injuries (when they are lucky enough to avoid dying in the first place) with nothing but misery to look forward to. Heck of a job, dubya.
It's long past time to legalize pot too.
All the caves would be left intact with the neutron bombs!
oh sweet jesus@
Robert Gates was hinting at an 'extended stay' beyond 2011 for the canucks in Afghanistan. It sure looks like the madness will continue for a very long time.

I don't know if you read the papers, but here's a news flash:
Obama is NOT PRESIDENT YET... and can't do ANYTHING about Afghanistan till the oath is administered. We're still lookin' at the work of THE BUSHIES over there.
I voted for Obama because I think he's smarter than most of you are giving him credit for. THEN... do you think he's gonna have all the solutions there in his back pocket by the time he's done with his speech on Inauguration Day? For God's sake... MIRACLES TAKE TIME... give Obama a little time to work his majic.
I'm not being facetious. I believe it's already a MIRACLE that Obama hasn't been assassinated by some right-wing racist nut job. I also think it's a miracle that a lot of Christian conservatives voted for Obama because McCain just wasn't the right person for the job. There's a lot of miracles goin' down around here... and I'm not even a very spiritual guy! Makes you WONDER, doesn't it?
and im sure you havent read the papers hes allready said victorys his goal in afganistan and hes going to keep rotateing thoes troops from iraq into the meatgrinder there, are you telling me obamas lieing and has no intention of doing what hes said time and time again on cnn,?not to mention hes said he will go into packistan if he thinks its nesasary, is that part of your news flash?
noxin.
Wesley, but he has already said that he intends to send many more troops to Afghanistan. You are also correct when you say that miracles take time. If we ever do get out of there, it WILL be a MIRACLE.
We will find out soon enough but, in the meantime, please excuse us for feeling disillusioned by it all.
No foreign occupying force has ever prevailed in Afghanistan. We won't, either. Afghanistan has already been lost.
Afghanistan has never had a strong central government, not to mention an honest government. We can't establish one, either.
Is there anything we can do to dissuade Obama from escalating the war in Afghanistan?
It seems to be something he is gung ho to do.
I think it will bring disaster - to us and to him.
Nobody is talking about it.
Practically no one on the left is talking about it.
If he goes ahead with it, I hope we see the kind of street demonstrations that happened before the Iraq war.
I read that Bush has build barracks for 20,000 American soldiers in Afghanistan.
We need a break.
I'm not sure most people have a real "holistic" view of what's going on over there... the truth is so incredibly complicated. For an insight into the mentoring of the ANA, and the ridiculousness that is a modern military apparatus, read "Don't Clean the Table with a Floor Mop," by a Naval officer who spent a year mentoring the Afghan National Army.
