Cargill is the company whose tainted beef was highlighted by the New York Times in October. Apparently that public shaming thing worked really well, because they've really cleaned up their act since then...

Just kidding!

For the second time this year, a Fresno beef company is recalling thousands of pounds of ground beef contaminated with a drug-resistant strain of salmonella.

Beef Packers Inc., owned by Cargill, announced the recall Friday. It covers 22,723 pounds of ground beef products that were sent to stores in Arizona and New Mexico.

The Arizona Department of Health Services has linked two illnesses to the ground beef, made at the Beef Packers plant on Sept. 23. The beef was "repackaged into consumer-size packages and sold under different retail brand names," according to a news release issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service.

Safeway announced that the recall affects ground beef sold at its stores in Arizona and one outlet in Gallup, N.M. A Safeway spokesman said the recalled product is no longer in stores and urged customers to check all ground beef in their freezers and discard any with "sell by" dates of Sept. 28 through Oct. 11. Recalled products include fresh ground beef, beef patties, meat balls and stuffed peppers.

In August, Beef Packers recalled almost 826,000 pounds of ground beef contaminated with salmonella Newport, the same strain that prompted the current recall. At least 39 people were sickened in the weeks before the summer recall, which included orders produced at the plant in June.

Hey no worries! When people get sick and die, others will stop buying from this company. It's the free market in action!

there is all this crap with the Fresno meat recalls, and not that long ago there was the Terra Bella pistachio recalls, etc. I wonder if our county governments would be able to help with this issue...

Did the spinach come from that area too?

UGH!

Buy local - eat local.

We quit red meat years ago but even veggies - Buy local.

Bella, and 90 miles from Fresno. So I'm not so sure buy local - eat local is all that doable for me... :S

Edit - Looks like the bad spinach came out of the Salinas Valley, which is further upstate. The bad ground beef and pistaschios come out of the San Joaquin Valley, but that still sucks...

new line of diet beef: same delicious flavor, with all the weight loss benefits of uncontrollable diarrhea. I though Weight Watchers would be all over that!

i'm going to try and eat local foods only now...the food industry is diiiirty. it was tough watching those cattle and hogs shoveled into killing machines soaked in their own shit. i believe those animals are sentient (have self-awareness, want to avoid pain and suffering, and feel love for others), i wish i could watch these food execs treated the same way. we have a right to know all the details surrounding our food products, but they've passed law after law to keep their operations shrouded in secrecy. they even made it illegal to criticize them in any way. i would pay to see them living in their own shit.

That Mick Piobr's picture

executed those responsible for allowing tainted foods to get to the market not long ago.

I'm against capital punishment.

Those responsible should be imprisoned for the rest of their lives.

There should be a plaque on the wall of their cell which reads:

"I'd be living the good life on an obscene salary If only I'd done my job!"

Our taxes should go to pay to support these leeches for the rest of their lives. No thanks, pal. They play games with people's lives, then up against the wall. Who the fuck needs them?

In my humble opinion, there should be a "three strikes" law for this kind of thing. Three times your product is recalled for being potentially lethal, and the government steps in and dissolves the company. It's fucking ridiculous to allow these companies to just keep being negligent and cavalier with people's lives.

If I lived in that area and had any of that meat, I'd be hauling it all back to the store for a Double Refund and some real nice coupons for future purchases.....if they'd like to keep me as a customer for any of their other products.

in the melamine cases would be satisfactory. Salmonella deaths as a result of not following health codes that are too expensive is murder for money. that's dp time.

If you eat shit that has been drug through shit, allowed to breed pathogens in the nice warm air, re freezed, dropped in the dirt, re contaminated with other pathogens, and then mixed up with all the other shit and dead carcass and delivered to you in a plastic box, you may want to get help. Mental help.
